I've been there several times for oil changes, and every experience has been great. Last weekend, my car suddenly started making some very strange noises on the highway. Robert's was immediately my first choice. They diagnosed the problem, fixed it quickly, and the cost was very reasonable. Everyone there is professional, responsible, honest, and reliable. They do what they say they're going to do, communicate clearly, and make the whole experience easy. They even provided a courtesy ride, which I really appreciated. While I never did business with Robert's, I bought a Miata with 112k miles that was serviced by them. All I can say is what a mess. The CarFax shows possible mileage rollback on this vehicle because their techs added an extra 30k miles to the odometer at one of the visits. It jumped from 90k to 112k in 3 months, and then back down to 94k 3 months later when serviced elsewhere. The PO also got a clutch replacement with them at 109k and since then it had 5th gear grind which is why I was able to buy the car for a cheap price. I drained the transmission fluid and found metal chunks all over the drain plug magnet from the synchro getting worn down. I filled it with the proper GL-4 lubricant and the grind got much better. I can now shift into 5th most of the time without grinding. They probably used GL-5 lube which has much more additives and properties meant for differentials. I've dived deeper into the car and found a loose slave clutch hardline bolt as well as a loose bell housing to engine bolt. The Miata has 1 very long bell housing bolt that needs to go on the exhaust hanger side. They put this bolt on the opposite side (passenger side) near the starter and left it sticking out 1 inch so it was pinching the engine harness. If the owner reads this please get your staff to pay a little more attention to the details because they absolutely matter. read more

Big fan. One of those shops that is a bit hidden in PB, but their value is incredible. Researched a few places and called ahead about the air conditioning on our Jeep Grand Cherokee. Unlike Chrysler Jeep Dodge which was pretty vague in their report (took for a diagnosis because we were just out of the warranty period - and maybe they're bound by corporate somewhat) Robert's Auto made me feel at ease that I was in the right place. Christian and team were spot on in letting me know what could be the issue, kept me in the loop on diagnosis, and timeline. Explained everything in detail as to what sounds I was hearing, why, etc. Pro-tip: Have an issue with your vehicle, but not sure what it is? So I don't know yet but it seems like they fix this is the second time I've been here the first time the shop for a lot cheaper. Did a proper job that even the dealership who charged me 1700. Today I had an appointment and James was so honest he told me I could probably get by with not doing changing a belt right away, but that was his opinion he said as a woman trying to go to a mechanic shop where we feel we're just gonna be taking advantage of because we don't know anything and we are easy targets. Often people ask if there is a trustworthy mechanic in the Pacific Beach area and Robert's Auto is mentioned. I want to warn people that the Robert's Auto of the past is gone and using the new (2024) version could be dangerous. In August of this year the mechanic forgot to tighten two key nuts on the front axle of my son's car and it FELL OFF. If this had happened on the freeway, my son could have been killed. They owned it, but didn't do enough (in my opinion) to rectify the situation--or prevent it from happening again. read more

I've been using Robert's auto service for about a year and am overall happy with the service. I had a post-purchase used car inspection, serpentine belt repair and AC tune up. All were completed in a reasonable time, which I appreciate. The staff is kind. Only feedback is regarding the prices and coupons. When I presented my coupon for $50 off $250 I was told I couldn't use it because I was already being given a discounted price for the labor hours to stay competitive ($250 for my AC tune-up). If that's the price you're charging all customers, that seems like the "real" price rather than a special discounted price. They said they do the same for oil changes. I think they should be more upfront about this. If my bill is $250 at the end of the visit, I don't see why the type of service should matter. read more

This is an update on the head gasket fix. I would like to preface this on wanting to lead other people in the right direction. Please get your services done somewhere else. My head gasket "fix" was more then a few Benjamin's. But they at least refunded a few back. I was ghosted after a week when they claimed I was a valued customer and that they wanted me to be taken care of after having a bad experience. The service requested didn't make a change to the rattling in my engine that they caused. Albeit the exceptional customer service I received, the work itself was very poorly done. Recommended here by a friend. Twice they tried to charge more than what they said. They doubled the diagnostic fee from what they said. They also said that there would not be a diagnostic fee if I had the repair done with them, which I did, but they charged it anyways. My friend says that they always drop the diagnostic fee for him when they do the repair; regardless, we asked and were told that they do so but they didn't They did not call with an update when they said they would. I called and was told that the part did not come in that day and that it would be done the next day. About 2 hours later it was done. Obviously the car was being worked on at the time I was told the part had not come in and the person I was speaking with did not know that or did not bother to check --- confusion. While it was nice that it was done, that was not helpful since I had made plans for the rest of the day because of the earlier statement that the part had not come in with their day's delivery, so I could not get it until the next day anyways I don't plan to come back here. And I don't plan to ask this friend for car repair guidance again read more

I took my BMW here for Oil Change and I wish I went to BMW of Encinitas. The staff here were nice but I was quoted a different price over the phone which was lower because I have AAA. I informed of the actual price when arrived for my set appointment. I advised the guy that I was quoted a lower price and I gave the Year, Make and Model and advised having AAA. Once the job was completed he said they couldn't do the Transmission fluid because it's different for BMWs. After that I was a little annoyed and realized I should have went to BMW of Encinitas and I would have paid the same price and receive service to check my Transmission fluid. I should have been advised over the phone because I wouldn't have come here for service. Communication is key. Now I know to take my car to the Dealership for now on. read more

I'd been here once before with no problems, but my last visit was so disappointing. I made the appointment on line, but never received a confirmation, so I had to call to confirm. I was originally told the repair would be 2-3 days, it took 5. I got 1 phone call about the status the whole week, I had to call otherwise. I was put on hold 3 times with no warning. When I picked up the car, they had to "find" my keys. The dirty, paper floor mat was left in the car. It was a $1100 repair, and a month later, it's leaking the same way.  The only thing that seemed to go right was the shuttle service. I won't go back or recommend. read more

I have seen Robert's Auto Service (RAS) shop every time I drive on that part of Mission Bay Drive for Decades. I have never used them because I usually go the dealership from where I purchased my Range Rover. For the past few weeks (according to my wife, last few months) my brakes have been squealing louder than a happy pig in a mud pit. I decided to get a quote online whilst my wife was driving us to Rancho Mirage, Ca. I received a reply really fast from James (no, not myself). The quote seemed pretty reasonable for a complete brake job, so I set up an appointment, also done online. When I got back home, I called my Land Rover dealership on Miramar Rd and got a quote hours later. I almost fell off the chair I was setting in; it was more than double the $$ for the same work at RAS. Needless to say I kept my apt. with RAS and was not disappointed. I began following a referral from a friend and now Robert's are the only garage that services my car (outside of Smog Inspections and the occasional oil change). First time taking my car here. I went in for an oil change and cabin air filter change, and battery cables cleaned. I stayed while they worked on my car. The lobby had the best coffee! I love my car. Audi 15 SQ5. I love it so much I needed new rear brakes from all the driving. I went to Robert's after reaching out to multiple different locations. Was very evident that Christian at Robert's knew exactly what needed to be done from just the Yelp message communication. Others wanted to resurface the rotors which you cannot do on this car. When I got there I wanted them to also check to see if the front brakes needed changing as well. I found them very honest that the answer was NO! Just the rears needed to be changed. Price quoted/completed was the same and did it in just a few hours. Used OEM parts. Really impressed with the honesty, service, and quality of work.
