I have honestly never written a yelp review but it this experience was just so offensive and bizarre. I was taken downstairs to shop for a used bike with my boyfriend, I apologized for having the sales associate take down several bikes for me when he proceeded to say "it's okay, id rather be down here flirting with you". It made me and my boyfriend really uncomfortable. Then when we went upstairs to test ride, I thought I left my phone and wallet downstairs and went back to look for it. As I did this another employee literally yelled "MADDY GET BACK UP HERE RIGHT NOW" as he'd heard my boyfriend say my name. There aren't any signs posted not to go down there. And what was I gonna do? Run down there and steal a bike from the basement and walk it out the front door?? also saw the man who yelled at me be very gruff with a woman who had a tire pop after getting it fixed there only 20 days ago. Overall just a really miserable experience from a place I was excited to go. read more

What a wonderful experience!!!! I LOVE Roberts Cycle and I am grateful for and love Richard and all his wonderful team of people. The store is as funky as it could be but more service committed that any place I have ever been. I was stranded with a flat and Richard came with a van and picked me and my bike up and fixed it for a very nominal charge and didn''t want to take any additional money for saving a damsel in distress. They do wonderful work. They accomodate the neighborhood kids without charge. They want to help and they will help with a smile . They bend over backwards and upside down to help you with your problem. Even though I live downtown, my next bike purchase and service visit will be with Roberts Cycle. I brought my bike here after leaving it in storage for the winter. I was thinking of buying a new bike--mine was rideable, but a long ways from perfect. Then I got a free checkup. We decided to replace the seat post and handle bar post because the bike never really seemed to "fit" right. They showed me the tires were starting to rot, which could lead to a blowout on the road. Add one new chain. Now I have a fantastic ride, at half the cost of a new bicycle. Very pleased! read more

These guys are awesome. I don't know the fellows name but "the guy with the BIG MUSTACHE" was very helpful the first time i came in. I asked him all different types of questions, I'm just becoming a bike nerd, and he answered every single one. He suggested getting resin pedals because my old plastic ones broke and they were cheap and and have held up nicely. The next time the owner was admiring the french, craftsmanship on my old roadie. I think I'll come in again and purchase one of their helmets. (nicest ones I've seen) This place is affordable and hospitable. Better than those high-end places. read more

The owner informed me that I needed about $120 in repairs on my bike. I let him know that I am student and moneys tight. He told me that my rear brake was the only issue that needed to be fixed immediately and the others could wait so I could spread the payment out. I can't think of another place that would be so honest. Really friendly and great service. Looking forward to coming back for the rest of the repairs. read more

I went in to replace my bent handle bars, and the owner argued with me that they weren't bent. I can assure you they were quite bent in an accident with a car. He kindly agreed to sell me the replacement at a good price. I'm very competent when it comes to bikes and mechanics so I found his dismissive attitude a little disturbing. The new unbent bars did the trick, but I installed them myself just to be safe. read more

Very poor communication, sales, service engagement process. Not the sort of business you'd want to establish a relationship with in care of your bike. Thankfully they have 48 hour return policy (it's something but...) I was able to take advantage of after realizing I received a crappy bike. read more

Made a bad decision to try these guys out instead of going to my trusted bike shop in my old neighborhood that's now 8 miles away. My right shifter stopped working, basically rendering my bike a single speed, and figured the cable had either broken or come loose, possibly a part broke. Took it to Robert's and got a bad feeling right away. My 2009 Jamis road bike was apparently beyond their skill level. Got some story about how they only have one mechanic who works on my type of bike, a road bike. Any bike mechanic at any shop in the city should be able to work on the shifting cable of my type of bike. Took the bike in on Thursday, was told they'd look at it Saturday, called on Tuesday and they said they hadn't looked at it because the ONE mechanic who is apparently skilled enough would not be in until Thursday. I called Thursday and was quoted $260 for replacement parts. I asked them not to work on the bike, I was coming in to pick it up after work. When I picked it up the guy started telling me some ridiculous story about going to a bike repair seminar a few years back and somehow that's where the $260 quote came from. I have no idea what he was talking about, but I don't even think they looked at my bike to see what was wrong. Felt like I was being scammed. Ended up going to my regular shop (even though it's 8 miles from where I live now), dropped it off on Sunday, they called next day Monday to tell me my bike was ready, went in and they charged me $12 for the repair. Lesson learned. Should have gone somewhere I know does quality work and that has the best interests of me and my bike in mind. I think the majority of this place's customers must be people who really don't know any better about pricing and service, or just need flats fixed because they don't know how to do it themselves. I don't even want to think about what they would have done to my bike or how much it would have cost me. read more

Alright, get this: So, I wanted to get a flat fixed, but it was 10am, and they didn't open until 11. I locked my bike out front and went to work, thinking I'd have to come back later in the evening. Something came up and I couldn't get there today, so I call to find out when they're open. Same trouble, whenever they're open, I'm working. I explain the situation, and they guy says he can see my bike out front. So here's the cool part--they're going to fix the flat outside and let me pay for it on the weekend! I don't love their hours, but I sure do love their service! It's like having a great mechanic for your car; and these days, my bike is my car! read more

I chose to go to this store because it is very close to my place. My husband has been going to The Pony Shop in Evanston for his bicycle's regular tune-ups; however, I think now I am going to suggest that he should go to Robert's Cycle instead because I think it's cheaper to do his tune-ups here. Yes, it is a hole-in-the-wall and a little run-down looking, but who cares! I spent an hour and a half trying to figure out which bike I should get. I got plenty of help from the two men who were working there and I didn't feel rushed at all. I think it's important to support small businesses like this one and I will definitely go to this place for every thing that is bike related. I only hope that this place will stay open in the future. read more

I recently had a flat tire from "biking the drive" and hitting a rather large pothole. I took my bike to Roberts since they are right down the street from me. It was a warm day so they were very busy and asked if I could wait to get my bike back the next day. When I mentioned I had to go out of town and would like to take my bike with me, they quickly agreed and had me out the door in 20 minutes. The shop is very tiny and luckily I was able to use their one and only chair to wait for my bike. The staff was very knowledgeable and you could tell they loved what they do. I viewed other customers as I was waiting. They all received very detailed, expert answers to their problems and had a solution by the time they left the store. It was only $15 to replace my tube and get me back on the road. Also, they fixed my loose seat at no charge. I can't wait to come back when I need a tune up. read more

Very helpful. Had my bike in for a complete overhaul. They are very knowledgeable about everything having to do with a bicycle and let you know what your options are, instead of trying to price gouge you. I paid a little less than $200 for new handle bars, tape, break lines, tires, and inner tubes, plus labor and tax. read more

Great little neighborhood bike shop. I live near Uptown right now, which has a little better selection of accessories, but Roberts is a great place, and when I ended up buying my current bike a few months ago, I went there. Their selection of bikes is solid, but it's the people that you're there for. I've been back several times, and they're a helpful, talkative group of people, and attitude-wise, are basically just happy that you're biking, and happy to help you out with pretty much anything related. I've seen people of every age in there, getting their (or occasionally their kids') bikes fixed. The staff has consistently not tried to hard sell anything whatsoever, and the owner is around regularly, and just as down-to-earth and helpful as the rest of the staff. read more

Seriously, this was the best service I've received in the city in a long time. My girlfriend and I were there to buy a lock and a helmet - not a big-ticket purchase, but we wanted some information. The gentleman who helped us was unbelievably knowledgeable and incredibly patient, even going so far as to teach both of us how to identify a high-quality bike in a used bike sale. This is now my bike shop. Great people; very unpretentious; and eager to educate a non-gearhead like me. Have fixed stuff other bike shops have missed; and advised to wait before major repairs until after the winter was over. I ride year round, but don't take great care of my equipment, and I've always felt like these guys were in my corner. read more

They were completely friendly, professional, and helpful. I went in once a couple of months ago to get a couple of accessories for my bike which I figured I would take home and put on myself (lights for the front and back). Not only did they help me put them on, when the shim given in the packaging wasn't quite the right size they got me another one for no charge. Then today I had encountered a bad air pump at a gas station and stopped in to see if they could fill up my flat tires. They did it for free and could not have been more pleasant about it. the most pleasant and helpful bike fixing experience i've ever had. i went into roberts hoping someone could loosen the bolts on my back tires so i could fix a flat. i was worried i'd feel foolish or l that i didn't know enough about fixing bikes but that was not my experience at all. they taught me how to deal with the derailleur in a very non judgmental way and spent more time than i'd ever dreamed of helping me put my back tire back on. i'd definitely recommend a trip to roberts for any of your bike needs. read more
