It's really nice to shop without the barriers to entry for gunpla. Not sure what people are talking about w/high pricing. Yes, obviously, HLJ, Mandarake, Hobby Search/1999.co are cheaper...they're also Japanese, duh, and the dollar is super strong to the yen right now. Plus some people like to see things in person, 'y know? R4L's pricing is the same or a few bucks different than the other local shops, give or take - including Little Tokyo. I'd say 95% of the store is related to Gundam with all skills levels and price levels in mind. The other 5% is stuff from Mazinger, Evangelion, and a few others. You can get super expensive perfect grade models or lower priced ones with every skill level. There's also tools, stands, paint, etc. The owners of this store live for this stuff so they can answer any question you can throw at them no matter if it's beginner level or advanced. I personally know nothing about this stuff but my friend is wanting to get into the hobby and has been doing research about it. We went in today during lunch and he picked up his first model kit. This place certainly has the largest inventory of Gunpla around. Price is better than other retail stores but not lower than online. I guess you have to pay a little more for instant gratification. The reason for the 3-stars is the lack of service. Upon entering the store, I noticed a gentleman behind the desk. He took one look at me and immediately decided not to waste his time so he went back to performing "brain surgery" or something as important. I walked around and left a few minutes later. Heart Eyes everywhereeeeeeee~ I'm been building Gundam models for a little while now after years of just watching the series. My parents didn't support my hobby so I used to secretly purchase the kits online and at Anime Shops in malls nearby my house. I came here with my best friend and we both loved looking around and checking out everything. It's an incredibly convienent store with good prices and also prices that often beat internet prices too. The staff are also really friendly and helpful. I also really love how the store caters to both veterans and beginners -- regardless of age. A fun and great place to visit, great variety to choose from in imported kits and figures. The only thing that throws my scoring low is the fact that they purposely try and create the illusion of "big savings" by over pricing their goods by a lot, then telling that "after discount" it comes out to more so the actual going price. So let me start by saying that this place is pretty great. They've got most of what I would need and the price is reasonable. Of course it's still more than what I can find online but I can come in and get something the same day so I'm okay with paying a premium for instant gratification. What I'm not a fan of is poor customer service. I like being left alone when I shop. So aside from the "hi how are you doings" and "let me know if you need any help", I'm not a big fan of interactions. I just want to walk around and look at gundams. Not only does this one dude not leave shoppers alone, but he likes to ask annoying random questions. He also like to complain about how he's not being paid enough to do what he does. And makes odd comments. And say things like how you should put the boxes back a certain way cuz he's too lazy to go back and put it back the right way for you (even though that's what he's being paid to do). Oh, and did I mention he likes to loudly proclaimed that he's too lazy to do something and that he's not being paid enough? Yeah....that's a sure fire way to put me off shopping here if it wasn't for the fact that this place is right by where I live and sometimes I don't want to wait and order online. Pros: They have a lot of Gunpla models for reasonable prices. Everyone in town should check this place out. Personal note: 1/The only things that I didn't buy from them were the Tamiya Basic Tool Set, and the GSI Creos Gundam Marker Basic Set because I can get these on Amazon (bought directly from Japan) for a lot cheaper. The reason for this is understandable, too. If you can't wait for 2-4 weeks for these items, just get it here at Robot4less because these would cost as much as fast shipping option. 2/ If you first play this, try the High Grade 1/144 scale model first, since it's not too complicated. So the girlfriend and I had a planned nerdventure to drive to robots 4 less to pick up some gundam model kits to paint and customize ( we're just beginners, but we have fun doing it together.) when we got there we were greeted with friendly and knowledgeable staff who gave us advice on painting. They also gave us some sweet recommendations on which kits to try out ( the newer ones have better articulation and the instructions are a bit easier) They were enthusiastic when we expressed our ideas ( I just paint various color schemes but the gf is making a set of Hogwarts house themed zaku) We completed the three we bought over the past couple day and enjoyed our little projects. The store itself was really hard to find. It was on the quiet corner behind the main store in the West Fullerton Plaza. It is right next to a drive-thru ATM. When I went in, there were a ton of models, figures, and modeling supplies. I think since their website was having issue, the store itself was really messing and disheveled. One thing you will notice is that they have a lot of model kits, one of the biggest storefront stock I have seen for a very long time. Since they are also an online retailer, they can find stuff for you in the back as well. The only problem is there are no prices for any of the stuff. So, you have to check the website for prices. Unfortunately, the site was down when I was there. I had to ask the clerk for every price. This seems kind of annoying. The prices are good, especially for the heavily boxes. There are also a massive selection of LEGOs. There were a lot of paints, brushes, stands, and airbrush kits. This is a great place to go if you need a new project to work on. read more

Basically fans of Gunpla will come to this store and think they've died and gone to anime robot heaven. The folks who run the store are very friendly and eager to help you find whatever you need. Kits are arranged logically by different 'grades' so HG, MG, NG kits are all grouped together and then they try to lump kits within by show so it makes things easier to find. They also have a website where you can purchase everything they normally carry in the story instead of having to make the trek down to Fullerton and they are also an authorized seller on amazon.com reaching out to a much wider buyer base than just the local LA area. Seriously, this place blew me and my friend's minds the moment we stepped into the store, with walls lined with Gundam model boxes along with the array of tools to masterfully build them. This store has a decent collection of gundams that we're actually at competitive prices. Often times I walk into stores like this and buy nothing because they're charging 10% more than Amazon on everything, but not here (although a few items were overpriced, but that happens.) They also have a lot of supplies for building gundams. Things you won't find anywhere else, and are even difficult to find online. Such as gundam markers, or top coat/spray paint specifically for gundams and other models. The only downside to this store was that it's so quiet that it makes it a little bit awkward. Which isn't a huge deal, but it would be nice if some background music was playing or something. read more

R4L has a fantastic social media presence and their intern/lackey/warehouse guy Chris is fantastic at providing quick feedback and remembering who you are. Their prices are significantly higher than some of their competitors, but they regularly offer discounts which even out the cost (as long as you're patient). It goes back to the adage of higher cost equating to better customer service. It certainly rings true here. I might not buy some items on their list when I know I can get it cheaper from another distributor, but if the deal is right, and there's a sale on, I will go to R4L first because of their dedication to the customer. read more

Despite its modest appearance, R4L is THE Gunpla center in Southern California. Its shelves are restocked with dozens of boxes everyday, and for good reason: The online store is massively popular and shops across the country, infamous for its reliable shipping and reasonable pricing. What most fans don't know about, however, is the great service the in-store staff offers to visitors. As a whole, they all work together to provide helpful information and answers to all your questions, regarding anything from future Bandai releases to airbrushing techniques. The staff will even stay to help you after hours if your question isn't answered, a service that many hobby shops don't offer. The only gripe I could pick at is pretty unavoidable: prices. All products, even the hobby supplies, are imported from Japan. This means that they'll be a but more expensive than American brands, and Gundam models in Japan are already quite expensive! However, I assure anybody that R4L prices are cheaper than most stores in the country, shipping considered. Much better than going to somewhere like Tokyo Lifestyles, which marks their prices up horribly. Also, the sales are often are quite considerable, sometimes jumping up into the realm of 30% off most of the shop! If you live in Los Angeles or Orange County and are disappointed by the lack of Gunpla stores nearby, you can find this gem in the heart of Orange. Shipping to SoCal residents is quick, even if you pick standard, and, if you can manage the trip, pick ups are free. Overall, all of my experiences with R4L have been outstandingly positive. Where do you start? Robot4less is a go-to-MUST for anything gunpla!!!!!!! Pretty much any model variant you can think of, and some you didn't even know about. The depth of models here is like nothing I've ever seen. HG-RG and everything in between. The employees are great as well. Extremely knowledgeable and very friendly. They helped me get back into the world with total ease. The tips and techniques on painting and shading I received just talking to them up'd my game 10x. Personally I paint by hand which I feel is a dying breed but the employees knowledge and help was still beyond expectation. The variety of extras in this place is amazing as well. Every paint color you could be looking for plus some extra bonus ones as well. Markers, fine tips, exactos, sandpapers, and anything else you could need to get that professional model look. They also hold classes and build sessions on Sundays and randomly throughout the month. It's a great time and experience being able to network with other gunpla enthusiasts and trade info and stories. They sell collectibles, like gundams and tons of other neat things. I've been inside their infrastructure, and it's got that great collectibles store feel-- tons and tons of eye candy. To the untrained eye, they may seem like overpriced toys... actually, they could be, but they're great stuff and it's a fantastic hobby. Their employees are friendly and keep the store's atmosphere pretty healthy, despite their arguably obscure location and store name. That said, I've seen two particular employees working there regularly and, among the two of them, they seem to specialize in different things. One guy is actually a toy robot building expert, while the other seems to have the available knowledge on pretty much everything else-- which is about, let's say, a whole third of the store. When I said their staff was friendly, well, they are. From what I've seen, there aren't many of them, anyway. They're more than willing to engage in friendly conversation about whatever it is you'd like to geek out about-- whether it be about random seasonal anime or favorite characters. One guy has an affinity for Type-moon, if that's your thing. They even had a television set that was playing it. The other guy doesn't talk so much, but he inserts a snide comment every now and then. Overall, the atmosphere's actually pretty entertaining. If you're a geek for all things mech and action anime, this is your stop. I'm not the biggest fan of gundams and meticulous figurine labor, but the sheer quantity of eye candy available is phenomenal. Sections that I'd already been through seemed to contain something new just minutes after I left it. It's a hole in the wall so you'd never expect a place like this, but it's a great find. After all, the only real reason why I found this place was because I was a regular customer at the butcher right next to them. Oh yeah, and as far as price, it's basically what you'd expect. Not like they're gonna cut prices like crazy, but they tend to be reasonable-- comparable to what you'd see online, minus the shipping jargon.
