After 2 months of waiting for this sold out event we finally got a spot at the robot date night. Which cost $50. But when we went to the place you pick whatever robot you want to build and it's not included in the ticket. Robot prices cost $25-$65. The host was pretty nice and he provided us with a cutter and a screwdriver. Then he played a movie while we built the robot. In the middle of the movie he provided free beer and popcorn presented by a walking robot!! At the end of the night there Wes's a robot movie trivia which was fun. The experience was really fun but I think it is a bit expensive for the ticket not including the robot. read more

I was excited to do the Robot Date Night because it was something completely different than anything my boyfriend and I had ever done. I looked at reviews prior and the only negatives I saw were about the value. Other than that they all said their facilitator was awesome and made it fun so I figured we'd go for it. We chose our robot (you pay for this at the store on top of the $50 deposit). Our facilitator was basically absent for 90% of us building the robots. My boyfriend had to go knock on the back door to get him because us along with other couples had questions. He left in the middle of the event to go buy the "complimentary" popcorn. He just wasn't present and didn't make the environment fun or engaging for anyone. Overall, it was an ok experience but the facilitator and venue did not have add anything to our experience. My boyfriend and I booked a date here through HowAboutWe.com and while it was fun, I can't possibly justify the $55 cost! You get to build a robot w/ a few other couples -- each couple gets one robot -- while watching a robot-related movie. It's a cute idea but the robots cost $15-25 and you're watching an old movie in a brightly lit room where you have to bring your own drinks and food. What is the extra $30 for? Building the robot was fun (although, ours didn't work and ended up having to be repaired & re-repaired which ended up making it worthless b/c it was a bubble robot & all the bubble solution ended up getting spilled before we could even try it out) but we could have just as easily bought a robot kit from the store and then went home to build it, resulting in just as good of a time. Unless they invest in some spotlights for the tables where your building the robots, dim the rest of the lights so that you can actually see the movie, offer complimentary soft drinks, and throw down some real robot knowledge, I wouldn't come back. read more

Me and the bf did the workshop there.we had so much fun. Brought wine and had good times. We watched the movie Short Circuit while we were making our Tamiya Tiger. It was really fun. The cute little robots brought us our wine and popcorn. I really want one of those. One thing I really liked about them was that they were constantly checking up on us. They actually gave us time time to finish. That's a good really good point. I kinda had to sober up because you have to think (not much) to make the tiger. Still not sober as I'm writing this review. Lmao. I guess we didn't sober up enough and we didn't finish our Tiger. But hey, there's always when we get home. Keep up the good work guys. read more

I visited this past weekend for the robot date night, and had a blast. Juan was so help and was an amazing host. We ended up making the ostrich robot which was a little tricky, but in the end we're were able to get it working. We chose Wall-E as our movie, and enjoyed the robot who served us popcorn and beer. At the end there was a trivia, there were a few questions that we didn't know, but thanks to a few random guesses we won a prize. It was my friend's birthday and when I asked his wife what he would like as a gift she told me to "buy him something weird." So I popped into RobotCity Workshop. I had been in this store once before with Zak O. but totally forgot that it was there because (1) we had been drinking and (2) we had been drinking a lot. I remembered playing Rock 'Em Sock 'Em robots with him and debating weather or not his cat would be scared to death of a Roomba. I also remember marveling at the full sized R2D2, asking if it worked, and wondering what my life would be like if he followed me around everywhere. [Conclusion: It would be awesome.] This time around I was sober and on the hunt for "something weird." The clerk, who was incredibly nice, showed me some robot kits, some tiny creepy crawly robots, and some robots that were out of my price range. I finally settled on a robot magnet that crawls up and down your refrigerator. When my friend opened his gift he wanted to go home right away to try it out. Robot success! read more

I was in the neighborhood for a show at The Vic, and RobotCity Workship caught my eye. It was an outstanding little store. As a sci-fi geek, I couldn't resist the call of the robots. The place is well stocked in robots of all kinds, including famous movie and television robots from Lost in Space, Futurama, Wall-E, and others. They also have kits of robots for you to build yourself, and offer affordable classes to teach you how to make them step by step. For the more advanced hobbyist, they have individual parts such as motors and other necessary equipment for those who are capable of making robots of their own from scratch. I have trouble saying anything on the price as I don't know that there are any other robot stores in the area, but as a newbie, I thought everything looked pretty reasonable. There are tons of robots in store that they let you play with. I had particular fun with a little claw robot that runs on tank wheels with a camera that shoots its image over a nearby television screen. It was a lot of fun, and it looked like other occupants were enjoying themselves with a couple of eight inch high robots that were beating the crap out of each other. My favorite part about RobotCity Workshop was the awesome employees. They were all friendly and excited to help and teach about the robots in the store. Its nice to go into a store you know nothing about and be made feel like you're welcome there. When my nephew is of age, I am definitely bringing him in for a RobotCity birthday party. Everyone needs to have a day where you are served birthday cake by a robot. read more

I had grand plans to start building my robot army here. alas I am not mechanically inclined. My son and I started off with a beginner level robot. we signed up for the workshop so that my clumsy hands and my non-engineering brain could be under the mechanical tutelage of a pro - in this case Cecelia who had so much patience with me and my son. Not only did she have to help us both in putting together the first stage of our Terminator robot, she also had to man the store. Kudos to her! We had ALOT of fun and will be back to purchase some more kits. Robot Date Night is the BEST date night for nerds and non-nerds in Chicago. Lexi was an AMAZING host who made us feel right at home and helped with all questions when they came up. ADDITIONALLY got to watch Short Circuit and drink! Even though we blew through the 2 robots we made (husband is a gunpla hobbiest) it was a fantastic evening! I already texted another couple I know about how great it was!! Highly, HIGHLY recommended!!!! And don't worry if you fail the love test, its not the end of the world ;) ADDITIONALLY, it's only like a 2 minute walk from the Belmont Red Line stop and on the same block as a Walgreens & Liquor store. This place is great!! The guy whom owns and operates this place is really cool, and you've got to give him props for opening up such a place. There are loads of things from kit 'bots to take up a boring evening, to fun gifts, and on over to great parts bins to pick over for your own uses at home. I'm still amazed that there is a place in the city where I can pick up a neat toy for my nephew and some serious stuff for my own gear at the same time. DIY is back, America! And this is a place where you can learn it. Classes in soldering, and various other topics are in the works, and are to be very accessible. Got a Roomba collecting dust in the closet? You can learn how to make it into something else here- Just grab a book and ask the guy behind the counter. They'll help you make something great! Just have an itch to solder something? Pick up an inexpensive and interesting kit- this is the only place in the city that you can- I've searched! Stop by, have a look, and pick up a magazine, book, little kit, whatever- you might just be starting down a very interesting and new path. This store is more than a store- it's a place of learning and experimentation. A place where you can make your ideas real, invent, and learn how. It's also new and growing- it will be a wonderful place for the community, but it needs help- so stop by, there's a great tea place next door, and see what tickles your fancy- and if you don't see it, just ask! The owner is a really, really cool guy who is very open-minded towards new things and his customer base. In fact, I think I might just make a call and see if he has that oddball thinger I need for a project.. and I'm pretty sure he will. Beats making an online order any day! I can't thank you enuff, you were MY ONLY HOPE! Well, I stumbled across a recording while I was cleaning an R2 unit I recently purchased (I think it might've been stolen). I didn't know what it was talking about. My Uncle recommended that I take it to Anchorhead to have the memory erased. I ignored him, I tend to be a bit of a rebel. I get it from MY FATHER. I wanted to get this issue fixed fast, like the Kessel run in 12 parsecs fast. I was beginning to lose hope, but then I had a NEW HOPE. I could've gone across the street to Robot EMPIRE, STRIKES BACK around six months ago have really slowed service and they have an awful policy on RETURN. I'm really not sure why no one has written a review on the Robot Date Night. If there is a review, the search didn't find it. Anyway! I live in the neighborhood and happened to walk past RobotCity Workshop on my way home late one night. I mentioned to a friend that is obsessed with robots and she informed me that they put on a Robot Date Night. Needing an idea for a fourth date, I registered for the following Friday. My date and I were the only couple for that date night. Nick was there to lead the evening's activities and could not have done a better job. We decided to build two things, a bubble blowing robot for her and a hovercraft for myself, all while watching Short Circuit. We worked with a small circuit building kit typically used to teach kids about circuits, motors, and batteries and played with some small robots available in the store. A robot served us drinks and pop corn and there was even robot trivia. I'm terrible at trivia and my loss proved that this time would not be the exception. I can't recommend this enough. Nick put on a great program and we both had a thoroughly enjoyable evening! read more

Was a crazy little store! I was killing some time and I came upon the funnest window display with all these Robots and it was so fascinating I just had to go in and check out Bender and his little friends. It was so fun to see all the robots I have grown up with in my life both all and new, from tv shows to cartoons! I bought a little robot kit for my nephew's birthday, you put him together and you use a soda can for the body, how cool is that. That will keep him busy for awhile and help him learn something. I think anyone, and I mean girls and boys and grownups can find something there and they even do robot building birthday parties for 8-up kids. read more

Awesome small business! We had our daughter's 7th birthday there, and one of her guests declared that it was the best bday party she had attended all year. The robot- and circuit-building activities were stimulating, and the kids seemed to really get into it. The various robots to play with we're so much fun for young and old alike. What really slayed the kids was the robot that wheeled the birthday cake into the party! The staff were impeccably professional and great at engaging the kids. That day, Mike and Nick were the entertaining and attentive instructors, while Greg manned the store and was all-around helpful. The robots (Smart robot, in our case) were fun and easy to build. All the kids were excited to be able to take their robots home. I really appreciated that it was easy to set up our food, while they provided all the decorations, paper products, and goody bags. Was walking up Sheffield to Wrigley with the fam today and came across this great little shop. We had so much fun looking at everything and checking out everything we could reach that we were late for the baseball game. After the game w stopped back by again and decided to adopt a pair of nano hex bugs and got a little habitat for them...it wound up being $36 after tax and everything. That's only two dollars more than that amazonian on-line shopping place, and we got to play with them as soon as we got home....sweet. I really wanted to get one of the Robotic Arm Edge kits to play with since they looked cool, maybe next time. The other thing they are carrying right now is the remote control R2-D2 that was featured in Robot magazine last year... looks so awesome! My girlfriend and I went on the robot date that this place offers on HowAboutWe. We built a robot while Wall-E played and drank some wine (the date is BYOB). Then there was robot trivia and we dominated. We got to take home the robot we built and won an additional robot in the trivia. The robots we could build as part of the date package were pretty basic little toys (you can buy more complicated robots). I'll definitely be going back to buy robots as presents in the future. There is no doubt that if you find robots appealing, you will LOVE it here. Right as you come thru the door you find yourself in the imaginarium of Greg, the owner. Greg is as polite as can be and beyond helpful. If it's robot related - this store has it. This place even has a small shelf of popular robot themed DVD's. The real kick is how there are robots running all around the place. There's this bot following a track on the floor that should make even the coldest heart warm with delight. read more

The Robot Date Night was awesome! Wanted to surprise my partner with a birthday activity that was out of the ordinary and this was it. The staff was so helpful and friendly, the space is setup very well with lots of robots around along with dance lights and a large projector for the films, oh and a robot actually brought out snacks! I highly recommend for anyone looking for a new experience even if you are not a good builder, which I'm not and was a little nervous about it, but they made sure we walked out of there with a functioning robot. Bring some wine (there's a liquor store on the corner if you forget!) and a good attitude and you'll have a blast! I was going for a pizza and saw the building with the green ROBOTS sign - thats all I needed to see. I had only a short while to look around but this place rocks for the amateur robotics enthusiast, toy collector, geek, etc. Im planning another trip over to check out the kits but they do have a good selection and a nice variety of magazines, Make books, parts etc - they plan to add microcontrollers to their inventory. I picked up a Make book and a variable temperature soldering iron and went to get supper - but I'll be back! ;-) Im looking forward to meeting up with other robot builders/experimenters through this place and find some experimenters club similar to the Robot Group out of Austin read more

How can I resist giving a robot store a good rating? I love everything they sell. They have terrific projects for me to do with my twins. I have also purchased LED lights and other electronics here for projects with my twins (although electronics are a lot cheaper online). My biggest interaction with this store, however, was that they put on a party for my twins' 6th birthday. Thirty plus 6 year olds frustrated putting their robots together. The party was plagued with problems. Some of the problems were the store's fault such as understaffing and insufficient instruction by the staff (one of the staff members was sick), but the store was very responsive to the problems. I would recommend this store to others, just be proactive in avoiding problems. read more

Coolest store ever. Just around the bend of bustling Belmont and Sheffield lurks the future. From Bender in Futurama to Roomba and iRobot; they have all our friends and a DVD of Johnny Five coming alive. They even have the 1980s Tomy robots on display I grew up with. A super fun store for both young and young at heart! If you have even a slight interest robotics, trust me, treat yourself and stop in at this lovely little store. The staff are friendly, helpful and not precious about yourself or your children playing with the robots. They have many, many robots to look and toy with and they even do birthday parties! I purchased two robots for my boyfriend here for Christmas and they were so helpful. They only had one left (and were about $50 cheaper each than Amazon) but they sold me one of the displays after trying to find me another one from somewhere else to no avail. They gave me a great discount for buying two at once. This is a really fun place to check out even if you don't have a need for a robot. Such a cute little shop with cool toys and friendly staff. I just had my sons fifth birthday here and it was GREAT! The guys running the party (Tom and Domo) were patient and sweet to the little kids while teaching them about circuit boards and building robot bugs. The kids played with robots, built some and then ate cake delivered by an old school robot. It. was. awesome!!!!
