Well my robot kept threatening to take over the world, and it was scaring the kids. So we took it to Robocity workshop, the best robot repair shop this side of the Mississippi, and the fine gents of this establishment neutered our robot Stan, and now he's a sweetheart, an absolute teddy bear. Fantastic service. Would've given 5 stars if not for the robot build project which was more complicated than anticipated. The kids had a blast, but there were definitely some frustrating moments. We went with the smartbot as recommended by the staff. However, we should have gone with a different choice. This particular robot wasn't as easy as we had hoped. A few kids even shed tears out of frustration! Additionally, there were some defective ones so the staff used up the spares that they had brought. I appreciate the flexibility as we originally were planning an on-site party. But then the headcount forced us to go off-site. They were accommodating... for a price. They brought a lot of gear with them so I now I understand. The three that had shown up for hands-on help were great. They were patient and polite despite the demanding crowd. I'd definitely recommend this place to others who wish to do a robot party, but recommend a different robot for the build project to ensure a tear-free event. Also, an on-site party will help keep costs down so long as headcount stays around the 12-15 mark since their space is rather small. read more

We used it repeatedly with our grandchildren. Instructors are knowledgeable, helpful, patient. Their inventory of robots is large and good for all ages. Their workshops were enjoyable always. We take our kids for a workshop, where they put together a robot, then walk out with the assembled robot and another one not yet assembled, to test their skills at home. Works perfectly. read more

We had our 5-year old son's birthday party at Robot City Workshop. It was awesome! I can't say enough good things about the customer service and staff - Nick and Bill created a fun environment and were patient with seven rowdy boys. The kids loved building their bug robot and playing with the robots in the store. The setting is small, but perfect for an intimate party. We brought in pizza from Giordano's, snacks, drinks and a cake. Overall, the logistics were easy and everyone had fun. If you are looking for a unique kid's party this is the place. Everyone raved and will definitely return to purchase more robots. Highly recommend this hidden gem. read more

RobotCity Workshop is such a cool small business. I discovered it when I went looking for a cool gift for my boyfriend's 4 year old nephew, and wanted something that was more creative than a video game or a sports jersey. All the guys in the family are engineers, so a robot would be the perfect gift. The staff suggested the Wacky Wigglers robot from Gears Gears Gears, which goes together sort of like Legos but with big plastic gears. No wiring needed. On Christmas morning, that was one happy giggly 4 year old! I put it together this time, but he'll grow into it over time. Building toys are just awesome. This place is a neighborhood gem. It's also on my must-do list of recommendations for out-of-town visitors. Staff is really knowledgeable, and can point you toward the right robot for first-timers. They know whether it's about just putting parts together, or whether it requires basic wiring and soldering skills. There's a lot to choose among, so as the kids get older you can upgrade them to more complex robots. I learned that RobotCity Workshop offers kids' parties and is looking into opening a second location in the suburbs. read more

This store is SO AWESOME! Even for someone who had a fear of robots when they were little (yes, really), I was totally enamored by RobotCity Workshop. I found it on accident while wandering the neighborhood, waiting for a show at The Vic. They have every kind of robot you can think of - and even a couple you haven't. There are classes! kid's parties! workshops! They have all your favorite robots, from Bender to Wall-E and beyond. My favorite part of the store was the little robot who runs on a grey track all around the store. I was looking at a Bender robot when I felt something collide with my foot, only to look down to see I'd stepped in the path of this little guy. This store lets you be a kid again, and that is worth gold. The staff are super friendly and happy to answer all your robot related questions. We attended a RobotCity date night hosted by Lexie! She was amazing! Very funny and informative , she kept us and our friends engaged and also gave us enough alone time to work on building our robots to have some fun on our own. I would definitely recommend this place if you are looking for a unique outing and a hands on experience. A plus, is that it's located in a great neighborhood so you can grab food/drinks afterwards to keep the night going! read more

These folks know how to throw a party. I co-supervised a birthday celebration consisting of seven hyper 7-10 year olds at RobotCity Workshop and was very impressed by these guys' ability to keep the kids under decent control, especially in a store full of intriguing things to play with. The assemblage was very entertained and left happy, new robot in hand (the birthday boy got to pick a robot set that the group was then taught to put together).The best part is, they have an old school robot roll out to present the birthday cake. Visiting our 4.5 and 8.5 year old grandsons in Chicago and wanted to get something interesting and fun for each. Found this place through Yelp! and walked over today hoping the Robot Workshop was more than a LEGO outlet. I was not disappointed! Everything from robot pens to high end soldering stations were packed into the front third of the store in an organized clutter that was already fun to explore. Nick, the enthusiastic and very knowledgable store manager, quickly figured out what I was looking for and knew exactly what to show me. "Anything with a green dot is right for the older boy." There were working floor models for almost every kit. While we were looking around, four kids were taking a class in the middle third of the store and having a wonderful time with a very savvy and fun teacher. The store provides after school classes in over 30 Chicago schools along with summer camps and store classes up to real electronic design and construction courses. The back third of the store was clearly a serious workshop to prepare kits and materials to support their STEM outreach. I got great gifts for my boys, made a new friend, and left happy to know that there are still some stores that believe you can do well by doing good! read more
