I have been dying to find good Ramen places in Rochester after living in Chinatown, DC for the last several years. I was bummed to arrive and find that the place appeared to be closed. However, I followed the signage and rang the doorbell that read "ROC City Ramen" because I was bound and determined to try this place. Luckily, a gentleman answered the door and explained that on slow days they often close the dining area but are still available for take out. He was very kind and prepared my ideal order, despite it being marked as "sold out" on the website (it seemed their site was having technical difficulties that day). The food was prepared within a few minutes. This was definitely some of the best Tonkotsu Ramen I've had in Rochester. The Chashu had a perfect texture, but wasn't very flavorful. But I'll chalk it up to an off day. I will absolutely be going back. I hope next time I'll be able to sit inside, but the menu is big with many dishes I look forward to trying. read more

Got takeout from here, ordered two bowls of ramen, chicken gyoza and vegan curry. The takeout was not presented like most ramen places give you the broth to pour into the main bowl on the side, it came all together in one bowl. I found the broth to taste way too salty and off. The vegan curry was good till i realized there was meat in it. I called about it and they were super nice. Brooklyn Ramen has been on my list for a while, but it's one of those places I always pass by but never have a chance to visit. It's a little homey, has that hole in the wall feel and mildly cafeteria like. Parking is a little tricky because it's in the back; I imagine it can get hard to get in and out if they get busy. Got the spicy miso and the beef curry. Price is 12$ for the ramen and 8$ for curry if I'm not wrong and we added the miring egg to add to the ramen. Ordered at the counter with 2 chefs in the back, and self service for putting back your bowls and dishes. Ramen: broth is definitely flavorful here, but it leans toward too salty for me. I could not drink the broth because the salt was quite overpowering. That, or maybe the broth became very concentrated in the pot from time. Noodles were ok, not rubbery and tasted fresh. The miring drunken eggs paired nicely with the ramen. If you're someone who likes strong and salty flavors, then this ramen is great. It may be too overpowering for others. Japanese beef curry: good flavor. Not dull or overwatered down curry mix. It has potato and carrot over good sushi like rice. I think Brooklyn Ramen's food is pretty good. Their menu is small but quality over quantity. The portions aren't big, so you may get hungry in a couple of hours. I do wish that the presentation and aesthetics were a little better, because that can add to the dining experience. Bowls were hard plastic which made the dish rickety despite it's strong flavors. They are very good and most common ramen that most beginners would enjoy before try more complicated or spicy ramen. I would recommend for anyone to try for the first time, but I also want to let you know that parking lot is very limited. Park at right time before it gets busy. They are good for quick meals, but they are not designed for long sit and chat long time like other restaurants. I was slow to come here reading reviews of small portion sizes, and yeah it's not like a giant bowl of pho but it's good and it's not like a dixie cup o soup. The beef curry is like a home version of beef stew with curry in it, good gravy, gravy, gravy. Tender flavorful and so much gravy. I've eaten at both the Alexander location and at the Cornhill Landing location. The Cornhill Landing Restaurant has a larger menu including Sushi. A sign on the front of the restaurant directs you to park in the back, but once you're in the back, almost every spot is marked reserved for patrons of other businesses. Service is fast and friendly, and the bowls are nicely portioned and full of fresh veggies. (I'd love to see a switch to a non-plastic bowl for dine in!) It's a little pricey, which prevents me from stopping here as much as I'd like to. $25 for two bowls of soup without meat seems like a lot - this isn't actually Brooklyn, after all. Brooklyn Ramen was a great choice on this 2°F night. The inside has several tables and booths set up, plus bar stools at the counter. I ordered the Shoyu ramen and gyoza. It took a little while to place my order (with only two people in line in front of me), since the person taking orders was also helping putting the ramen together. Once I did order, though, it wasn't long before I got my food. It seems like they're still working out the kinks of their service model, but it didn't bother me too much since I know they opened up just a few months ago. The food was very good. The gyoza were freshly made and tasted great. The ramen portion looked small at first but was surprisingly filling. I thought the noodles were perfectly cooked (al dente). I've been to other places where the noodles got soggy pretty fast, but these stayed al dente. The broth was also fantastic. I'll be back to Brooklyn Ramen for sure. I want to try the Spicy Miso next. This is a self service type restaurant where you order your food from the counter and pick it up yourself. There's a pitcher of water and cups available for you to get if you are not ordering drinks. I ordered the spicy miso ramen and the broth had great deep flavors and umami. The noodles quality was also decent and has that firm ramen noodle texture as it should. The size of the bowl you're paying for is pretty on-par for what you'd expect at the price point of $10-12 for each option. Not too big, not too small. I got the Spicy Miso tonkotsu. Noodles and vegetables were spot on, but I wasn't as impressed with the broth and pork. There wasn't as much spice as I was expecting, the miso flavor overpowered any existing flavor of spice. My cuts of pork were pretty tough and were not easy to eat/cut into by any means. If I could give 3.5/5 stars I would. Brooklyn Ramen has been in my Yelp bookmarks basically since it opened. I'm a huge ramen fan, and I'm always looking out for a new ramen experience that will measure up to my fave ramen location (Sapporo Ramen in Cambridge, MA - their house ramen is SO good). All-in-all, I'd give my initial impression of Brooklyn Ramen 3.5 stars... BUT I'm going to boost it to 4 stars here on Yelp because 1) Okay, we can't give half stars, but also 2) the staff member who took my takeout order over the phone, Michael, was fantastic, service oriented, and very mindful of how to time my order. I ordered both the spicy miso tonkotsu with an egg (for me) and the regular miso tonkotsu without an egg (for a friend). I also ordered the pork gyoza for my friend and I to split. When placing the order over the phone, Michael asked me where I was in town... and when I gave my location, he estimated the timing it'd take me to drive over so that my order could be prepared according to that time. Awesome. Ultimately though, this method is probably especially necessary given that Brooklyn Ramen mixes all ramen ingredients in the plastic to go bowl... which is one of the things I actually might recommend reconsidering. Having tried takeout from a number of different ramen places in different cities, I've found that actually having the broth separated into a smaller to go container can be really beneficial and make transport a bit easier. Once you get home (or to wherever your next stop is), you can mix the broth into the bowl before eating. Nom nom nom... Anyway, I found parking on the street close to Brooklyn Ramen (parking for the restaurant is in the back of the building, though there's street parking available if you don't mind a wee little walk) and wandered just up the sidewalk to the restaurant. Upon entering, they confirmed the name of the order and everything was ready without issue. With a bit of a tip, the order came to just over $37 (two bowls of ramen and the order of gyoza), which seems comparable to other ramen restaurants I've ordered from. In terms of the ramen, I had the chance to try my friend's regular miso tonkotsu ramen (Creamy Pork Bone Broth, and Sea Salt Tare, Straight noodle, Pork, Scallion, Wood Ear Mushroom, Black Pepper) - as well as to enjoy my spicy miso tonkotsu (Creamy Pork Bone Broth & Miso Paste, Wavy Noodle, Pork, Scallion, Sweet Corn, Ichimi Spice, Seasame Oil). I'm not usually someone who orders spicy foods... but in this case? I'm really glad I did. The spicy miso tonkotsu was the winner when it came to taste (my friend and I both agreed on that) and the wavy noodle complemented things well. The straight noodle in the regular miso tonkotsu ramen just doesn't allow for any extra "oomph"... ah yes, admittedly, I am wavy noodle-bias. As for the ramen broth, it was good. Not the best I've ever had, but certainly far from the worst. I didn't experience that lick your lips-type reaction you can sometimes get... it tends to happen when you've had pork broth with that bit of collagen that creeps into the broth because it's been simmering with pork bone for hours and hours. TL;DR All in all, an enjoyable experience with Brooklyn Ramen. I would definitely recommend the spicy miso tonkotsu, as the flavor was much more enjoyable... and it's not overwhelming in terms of spice, just a good amount of flavor. Overall? I would just recommend a few minor tweaks (like the separation of the broth for to go orders). Would certainly visit again though. read more

Great winter comfort food! I've eaten here or from here several times, since back when they used to be called Brooklyn Ramen. The vegan food here has never disappointed me; the portions, toppings, flavors and textures have all been consistent. I normally get the vegan miso ramen here. I ask for it spicy and have no complaints about the spicy level. The broth is flavorful and substantial. There is a generous amount of toppings and they're a good combination; I love mushrooms and corn. The noodles are a good consistency and texture. The bowl of ramen is very filling and I've never left here hungry. I tried the vegan curry on my last visit. It had a great variety of vegetables in it! Mushrooms, potatoes, carrots, and more (idr whoops). The sauce is delicious! I loved that the curry felt like a hearty winter stew. The flavors and textured worked really well together. Since I've had some awful experiences with rice at restaurants recently, I'll mention that there was a good amount of rice and the rice itself was well-cooked, moist and soft. They had a wide selection of kombuchas when I was there. I tried one that was a peach lemonade flavor black tea. I loved it. The interior is clean, well-lit and welcoming. The artwork, view of the kitchen and indoor plants really help make it feel very homey. I only saw a single bathroom; It was clean, spacious and well-decorated. I personally have never had trouble finding parking in the back lot. The staff has always been very friendly. During the pandemic, I've only been getting delivery from Roc City Ramen and haven't been to the physical store. Surprisingly, their ramen is also very good as takeout. I don't know if they changed it yet, but the vegan curry is not vegan. The curry has milk in it for whatever reason. You order at the register. Once it's ready, they call your name and you go up to the counter and pick it up. There is plenty of table seating inside, and water with cups near the tables. I finally made it to Brooklyn Ramen and I was glad I did. The food was good, and made me feel better on a day when things were just not going well. The owner was there and he was so friendly and engaged with customers. He offered free sweets to try for a few of us one afternoon. I would come back just because he and his staff have created a welcoming place with good food. So I ordered the Spicy Miso which wasn't my favorite ramen I've had in my life, but it was good. I didn't think it was particularly spicy either, but again I don't want to complain about good food. The ingredients were clearly fresh and I appreciated the comfort. I also ordered gyoza (chicken) and these were THE BOMB. The best little dumplings I've had. And I've had some good ones even here in Rochester. They were perfectly shaped, the size was good. The flavor was full and salty. I would definitely order these again. I might just go and order a couple of them. The atmosphere is relaxed and sort of spartan, but it works. I like that you can see into the cooking area and watch what's going on. It feels like home in that way. Parking is the only negative. It's limited. When I pulled in there was no space, and I had to do a weird turn around and go park on a street. When I came walking back (from the street out back which has some limited parking around the curve) there were open spots. It's just hit or miss I guess when you have a popular spot like this. I love Brooklyn Ramen. The don't have an extensive menu, which I think is great, because they work on making the items they have available the best they can. My favorite is the spicy miso tonkotsu, I love the balance of the rich broth with the spicy flavors. I am also a big fan of their dumplings (now that they have figured out their process). I always ask for the egg, and I always had it well executed. I also love their vegan miso broth for when I don't feel like having the delicious pork (it happens!). I had the pleasure of trying Brooklyn Ramen, and overall it was a decent experience. The menu is simple and small, which I can respect. It lets a place master a few dishes that they can be very proud of. I have been to asian places that serve ramen, and it wasn't the star of the menu. I ordered the Tonkotsu Ramen, and it was pretty tasty. It says "spicy ramen", but it isn't that hot. If you want to add more spice to it, you can. The noodles were on the al dente side, which was good. Nobody likes mushy noodles. I think the star of the bowl I had was the meat. I think that it was probably the most flavorful and well spiced meat I have had in a ramen bowl ever. Normally they are cheap, fatty bland slabs at many places I have been to. $12 for a bowl is on the pricier side, but I would order this again. I get that BR is a quick, cafeteria style place. That is where a lot of restaurants are going these days. Cutting down on dishes to wash is understandable, but I think that for the dine in option, the plastic sort of cheapens it. I like getting my ramen or pho in an actual bowl with a spoon. Brooklyn Ramen isn't huge, but they could consider setting up more of a recycling style trash system (and do the same for sorting dishes and flatware) kind of like Core Life does. Brooklyn Ramen is tight on the parking, so watch the times in the surrounding area, and on Saturdays you can park at Canandaigua National after they close. read more

Finally got something that I think could be called "ramen" in Rochester. Parking was fine in the back. This restaurant is more like a fast food place. You order in the counter and later they call ur number and you get your food. So everything is in one-time use plastics - which I thought was not environment friendly. The ramen itself taste good but didn't have that much veggie except corn. I would expect it to at least have some green veggie in it (I ordered the pork with spicy miso). The pork was great, they roasted it first and the it was the right amount of salt. But the serving size was small. I'm so glad I finally made it here on a cold winter night! They close at 8 so get here early :) This is more like a get in and get out kind of restaurant. Go in, order and pay at the counter (the menu is on your left on the wall), if you're eating there then take a seat at the bar or one of the tables, once they're done getting your bowl together you walk up and get your food! The owner is really friendly and even though it's not a service type of place he still checks on you as he cleans up. I had the tonkatsu ramen and my bf had the shoyu ramen. The tonkatsu's broth was rich and the ramen was cooked well. The noodles were not soggy and had a nice chewiness to it. The pork slices on the top could be more tender and flavorful though. They were also thinner than I've had at other ramen places. My favorite was the shoyu ramen. The broth had a clean taste and it was just the right amount of saltiness. I love the bamboo in this bowl, they had a nice texture and cooked very well. I'd order this one again in a heartbeat. We came too late to try the gyoza and egg :( definitely have to hustle next time to get these!! I must warn you the portions are not big. I'm not a big person and would have needed a second bowl to feel any type of fullness (we went to get second dinner after our stop here haha). So wait time isn't long at all for the food. The atmosphere is sorta like a fast food restaurant where you order and choose where to sit, no server, and no menu at the table. But it's nice since its quick and you can make it to go. It is very casual and comfortable. As for the food, the ramen is amazing! The temp. of the soup is perfect so there is no fear in burning your tongue. The base of the broth definitely has that umami flavor and the pork and egg is cooked to perfection. You always got to go the egg. The dumplings are made to order so it is super fresh!
