Authentic and small Japanese restaurant in Rochester. Had the tekka, hamachi, and kappa roll. All were really fresh and yummy. Also has good miso soup, curries, and ramen. Wasn't a huge fan of the seaweed salad. For dessert they have ice cream and tempura ice cream. The tempura batter around the ice cream was ok. This is a little spot with a small menu, but everything is authentic, fresh and tasty. We came here about 40 minutes prior to closing on a Friday night and there were plenty of customers (but still a few open tables). We were told that it would take about 45 minutes for our food to come out if we ordered sushi, but we decided to stay anyways. There is one sushi chef for the entire place so wait times are long. We tried a chirashi bowl, several rolls (spicy salmon, alaska, salmon) as well as several pieces of sushi on the side (fish roe and fish egg); they were out of uni this day. Menu is small/limited, but the options seemed to be very authentic. I believe the chirashi bowl came with a miso soup and salad which were okay (we have had better). The chirashi bowl was excellent , everything was fresh, tasty and the sushi rice bed was flavorful and well seasoned. The rolls were also good; I especially enjoyed the Alaska roll. The spicy salmon roll only came with four pieces as an FYI. I did wish the plating for the individual rolls/sushi pieces was nicer as they seemed to fit everything onto one small plate but it was still tasty. We also noted that the wasabi here was good (we could feel the heat). Overall, a good recommendation we kept receiving from other people. Menu is simple, but true and authentic. Together with Shema, I think this is one of the best options in Rochester. read more

Omg, what a hidden gem in Rochester. Authentic Japanese resturant. The sushi chef and waitress/hostess are super efficient. The waitress/hostess was so fast and friendly. She waited on all the tables and handled takeout during a busy night and the service was impeccable. The fish here is super fresh and delicious. I ordered the chirashi bowl and ramen. Definitely an authentic Japanese restaurant with lots of raw fish options. They start you off with hot hand towels which was really nice. We ordered the fried ika to start which was a small portion of squid rings and a garlicky dipping sauce. The squid was a little on the chewy side but the dipping sauce it came with was sooo good. I couldn't pinpoint the flavors but I tasted garlic and it was so much better than your typical sriracha aioli. We also ordered the sushi and sashimi combo which comes with soup and salad. Very plentiful and lots of high quality pieces of fish too. It did come with some nigiri but be prepared for it to have little globs of wasabi under the meat. Have you ever watched Doraemon before? When I was a kid, I always wanted the Anywhere Door, so I can go anywhere in a second. When I stepped into Shiki, it feels like I'm in a family-owned Japanese restaurant in Japan. With a bit of beer, I'm I still in Rochester or Kobe, Japan where my mom's at? I can't tell! The food here is incredible! Extremely authentic and fresh! Their price is worth every penny, and for the same quality and taste, you will need to pay double or even triple in somewhere else. Great spot for Japanese food if you aren't looking for a hibachi place. They've got lots of sushi options, along with noodle soups like ramen and udon, and curry rice dishes. I got the tempura udon noodles which was pretty good and my friends all got curry dishes. They liked theirs but wished there was more meat and other add-ins mixed with the curry and rice. There is very limited (and tight) parking out back and I would highly recommend making a reservation as most of the tables were reserved when we showed up as the restaurant is only open from 5-9 pm. read more

I write this review knowing that everyone has different expectations for what they want most out of their sushi eating experience. I make an opinion on sushi usually on quality of rice, freshness of the fish/other ingredients, and authenticity. In each of these categories, Shiki comes out as the clear ROC winner. There is nothing wrong with wanting a more Americanized sushi vibe (we like what we like) but if so, Shiki is probably not the right fit for you. The rolls tend to be pretty bare bones and I pride them most on the nigiri. Perfect rice to fish ratio and perfectly colored, fresh fish - pretty much every time. Some of my personal favorite rolls are the dragon and spicy salmon, but you can't go wrong with anything on the menu that fits your taste. As a side note - the dressing on the starter salad is next level. I have both eaten in and ordered takeout and have never had much of a problem with service. The ambiance is not fancy and they tend to struggle with larger groups.I highly recommend making a stop here ASAP! read more

Oh Shiki... Aishiteru! This place is absolutely my favorite Sushi restaurant in Rochester. I was introduced to this place due to a heated debate as to which Sushi restaurant is the best in town. Needless to say, I lost the debate; but also won at the same time. I've been coming to the restaurant for years and will continue to introduce my friends. I am not a fan of fancy or flashy sushi. I am not swayed by a rock lobster roll covered in pineapple glaze and gold flakes (has anyone ever done that?). I like my sushi simple, straight to the point, and delicious. Shiki delivers that on all counts. The presentation of the food is excellent, and I never had a sushi that did not taste fresh, had under cooked rice, or be super cold like it was been stored in a freezer forever. It's also good to have sushi that is not 80% rice and 20% contents. My go-to rolls are usually the Spicy Salmon, Philadelphia, and Tekka. For appetizers I go for the Beef Negimaki to offset my seafood indulgence. I also recommend their curry dishes if you're not wholly committed to their rolls and sashimi, but I understand if it's hard to break away from them! The restaurant is very small, simple, and divey That's one thing I find lacking about about the place; the interior, rocky tables and chairs could use an update. This can be trifles, because I'm usually too busy enjoying my food while listening to some 80s Japanese music playing softly in the background. One major benefit to such a small restaurant is that the staff will never be lost or forget about you, and you'll always be within an earshot of a server if you need something right away. The service and food delivery has always been fast in my visits here. So I guess this is the part where I, like everyone else, boast at the fact its Japanese-owned. Cool to know, but it does not implicate the caliber of the restaurant; they did that on their own with the food and service like any other restaurant can. How many Mexican/Italian/Chinese restaurants have we visited with owners and operators of their respective nationality, and the food sucked? Nonetheless, the authenticity is a great coincidence, but come in with an open mind and dive into the cuisine. You won't regret it. read more

Have been going to Shiki for several years and they have been consistently good. Usually, I go for their Sushi and Sashimi Combination, but lately I have started testing various other dishes they offer. This time I tried Katsu Don, which is a pork cutlet over a bed of eggs and onions over rice. It was very tasty. Their Dragon Roll is good. We always ask for extra dressing with their salad because that dressing is just amazing. Of course, the meal will not be complete without Green Tea Ice Cream. Their service is generally good but somehow there seems to be a rapid turnover of waitresses. As the result, the new waitresses need time to train ... not really a big deal. Genuinely love this place. Shiki has to be my favorite sushi place in Rochester. The rolls, sushi, and sashimi pieces are always well prepared and full of flavor. Even if you are ordering "simple" rolls that you can get every where else, they do it oh, so right here. The boyfriend and I generally come here and grab a sushi boat (9 pieces of sushi and a tekki rolls) with some entrees or appetizers to complete the meal. I've never been disappointed. The rice is perfectly balanced with vinegar and salt, and anytime there's a nori-wrapped roll, the nori itself has plenty umami flavor to make each bite well rounded. I've tried udons and ramen here as well. The udon dishes are fantastic, and the ramen is great when you're looking to fill a craving. I had the shio ramen just last night and enjoyed it! Be warned that the spinach and pork aren't cooked in the broth so while they did have a chance to add extra flavor, they didn't. The egg is perfectly cooked to a creamy soft/medium boil, and the bamboo has a ton of flavor. My favorite of the toppings was definitely the bamboo! Shiki is a cute little hidden place. The sushi definitely tastes very fresh but it wasn't amazing. It's also on the more pricier side for how many pieces of sushi you get. The place is definitely good but for some reason it was just alright to me. I wish they had dinner bento boxes and some more sushi options. My friend and I were also put in a corner where it was hard to see the specials so I would have definitely ordered one of those if I had seen it or if the waitress had mentioned them. I ordered the yakisoba from the appetizer menu ($7.50). It was tasty but wasn't anything special. I also ordered the Alaska roll ($6.50). It was also good but seemed like a small portion. I probably ordered the wrong things but the place left me wanting a little more from them than they gave. The waitresses were very nice, the place just did not wow me at all unfortunately. read more

This is a small restaurant and you really need a reservation. So far all of their food has been delicious, I like the fried chicken the best. It's so juicy and perfect with the soy and lemon. The portion size is nice for an appetizer. The service is pretty slow when they're busy. I waited around an hour for my fried chicken, which was the only item that I was eating that time. The rest of my family (2 other people) got items before me at a moderate pace. I think it's worth the wait, but that one time was annoying. The other time I went it was a normal wait time. read more

I didnt quite like the takoyaki since i have had much better ones in nyc before and have higher standards for it. There were too much flour dough in the takoyaki. However the sushi pieces i ordered were very fresh. I had three pieces: squid, fluke, and yellowtail. They were all super good. I also had the ramen which i enjoyed very much. Today was a new day and I figured I would give Shiki another try. My wife and I had been there before but were unhappy with the service we received last time. I arrived there a little before 5:00 which was perfect because they open at 5:00. This time I knew what I wanted because I remembered what was on the menu. My wife and I both ordered the maki roll dinner. It was just enough food for the two of us. In addition to your maki rolls you also get soup and salad. The service was very good this time. There were two young women that waited on our table. They were a lot nicer then the two older women that were working there before. After I paid my bill I forgot my credit card. When I was in my car one of the young women came out and gave me my credit card. I was very thankful and grateful for them bringing it out to me. All in all I have to say it was a great experience. The food was good , the service was good and the bill wasn't that bad. For my wife and I the bill was only a little over $30.00. read more

My boyfriend and I celebrated our anniversary here because we loved our last experience (and our first date was sushi heehee). For apps we had the eggplant. The sauce on it was very flavorful and the dish was quite interesting. The texture of the eggplant was just right, not too mushy. It's really hot when it first gets to your table so be careful. We also got the pork ramen (tonkotsu ramen) to share. This is probably the best ramen I've had in Rochester. The texture of the noodles had just the right chewiness and it absorbed the broth flavor very well. The broth was fatty and seasoned very well. The best thing in the bowl was the bamboo. So yummies and full of flavor. The only thing I didn't like was the pork. It was dry and chewy. The other item we tried was the Alaska roll. I loved this! Lovely mom and pop restaurant. We ordered takeout and were not disappointed! The sushi was good, and so was the miso soup. The udon tempura had great flavor. One small thing: we ordered the udon tempura to go and the tempura was a little soggy because it was put in the udon and packed up. I would recommend keeping the shrimp tempura outside the udon for takeout orders. Would definitely come back, and I'm looking forward to a time when it's safe to eat there in person. The restaurant seemed like it had a very warm, cozy, and welcoming vibe. Hey ladies, remember that guy In high school you were really excited to make out with, but when you eventually did it was really disappointing and you were left with lotsa feelings of shame and regret? Well, I was that guy. Shiki is also that guy. Now, I don't dole out 1/2 stars like a lot of people here because, much like the theory of evolution and the notion that man could actually land on the moon (I mean, what!?), I think the idea of fractions is a preposterous concept that only exists to confuse the heck out of me. So Shiki gets 3.7 stars. Decimals baby! Love 'em. 2 legit 2 quit, as LL Cool J would say. I guess Shiki is better in many respects than the most popular, but ever so controversial sushi joint in Rochester; however, it wasn't the bloodbath I was expecting. Is the quality better than California Rollin'? Mostly. Is the interior more Japanese looking? Definitely. Is it more fun? Probably not (though my friend got food poisoning the last time I was at California Rollin, which definitely wasn't the funnest thing ever). Do I feel less like a douchebag going to Shiki? Depends on the day. I went to Shiki for a solo lunch the other day and when I arrived (around 11:45am), it was completely empty. Some people eventually showed up around noon, including some business jerks who ate their nigiri with forks. Are you friggen kidding me? Whatever. I ordered the sushi and sashimi combo, which was around $16 and came with miso soup and salad. The salad was sub-par, with shredded iceburg, carrot slivers, cucumbers, and a ginger dressing that I wasn't crazy about. It was kind of like the salad my mom makes when she's sick of trying. Minus the resentment. The miso soup was fine, but if you're a Japanese restaurant and you mess up your miso soup, I will punch you right in the kimono. For real. And then there was the fish. Look, I'm not a sushi snob by any means. I admit, I am a pho snob...and a banh mi snob, and a duck snob, and a denim snob, and a chicken wing snob, and I prefer my coffee French pressed...but when it comes to sushi, I'm pretty content with a salmon and avocado roll from Wegmans. My favorite place ever for sushi is Minado in Natick, MA, and there, Mexican guys place fish on pre-formed rice balls and call it "nigiri." Keeping that in mind, I wasn't blown away by the sushi here. Yes, the sashimi cuts were plenty thick and the rice was decent, but the nori on the my tuna roll was not sealed completely, leaving a visible seam on the bottom of the roll. Wuddup wit dat? The salmon was very good, as was the white tuna, or whatever the kids call it these days, but those two fish are always good at any respectable sushi joint. The tuna was just okay. It appeared fresh enough, but it was missing that savory, rich component (dare I say "unctuous quality") that I've had elsewhere. It was just kind of blah. And the other white fish (I'm guessing fluke) really did nothing for me. Sorry guys, I just wasn't feeling this lunch combo. Some might say my experience was a "fluke", and to that I'd respond by saying, "Nice pun man! Really. Good quality, super sweet-ass stuff. You should Yelp more often." The eel and shrimp were fine, but there's not much variation amongst those two items from restaurant to restaurant. The decor is pretty bare bones Japanese. Nice, calm atmosphere with Asian music, neutral colors, and sushi themed artwork. The service was attentive and polite; I was given a new napkin before I even realized I had dropped mine on the floor and my water glass was always full. At the same time I didn't feel like my waiter was creepin' like some annoying creeper, which was refreshing. I can't place my finger on it. I guess I just expected more from this place. Maybe Shiki is better for dinner, but for lunch it didn't blow my clothes off like I was hoping it would. read more
