This is a long review. Trust is not easily given when it comes to the safety of your children. I had read the reviews and spoke directly to Adam, the owner operator of Rock-About Climbing. Adam set my mind at ease with his years of experience and the training program of his instructors. One of the key elements is you know your child best. Do they listen and follow instructions, are the respectfully to themselves and to others? This will have a huge impact on the child's camp experience. I have twin boys who are good listeners and eager for challenges, yet are comfortable to say I'm not ready to take it to the next level without shame. My sons attended camp twice this year. They had amazing experience both times. They were full of stories to share with us at dinner. Adam and Chris (Lead guide instructor) are wonderful working with kids and teaching them skills and techniques for climbing. They have a strong emphasis on safety and listening to instructions. Be prepared to hear stories of push ups or jumping jacks if you step on a rope, walk underneath a climber or don't follow instructions. This IS NOT a drop your child off and pick up at the end of the day and whatever happens-happens camp. You know your child best so please make sure they're emotionally mature enough to listen, be respectful and want to learn. It's your child and our child safety and experience on the line. Our boys had a fantastic time despite a few challenging students. I give Chris so much respect and gratitude how he handled a challenging participant. On the last day they take the students to Enchanted Rock for their final climbs. One of my boys, whom I thought it would have been his twin brother who did this climb, made it to the TOP of the 70 foot rock face. His eyes literally sparkled as he told us about the view from the top and the lake he saw. He admitted he was scared at times, he would take a deep breath and tell himself, I've got this. My other son was fatigued from the heat and listened to his body. He made it 1/2 up the epic wall. He was not shamed by the instructor. He was congratulated on listening to what felt appropriate for him during that moment. The highlight of the day was the Snow Cones at EnchantedRock after a hot day of baking in the sun. I highly recommend this camp for their expertise, attention to safety and passion for teaching. Prepare your child with proper hydration. Most importantly be respectfully to other campers not to send your child if their not emotionally or mature enough to listen and be respectful. This is not a boot camp or drop off & pickup kinda camp. My sons are hooked and look forward to climbing with Chris and Adam again. They asked me if they could climb with them again next week?!?! read more

AWESOME EXPERIENCE A friend and I went rappelling with Rock-About at Enchanted Rock. Adam was very patient with us both being beginners! I was a little nervous at the start of the day, but Adam's experience and kindness quickly made it a fantastic excursion. He answered all of my questions and explained technique and gear. We hiked, rappelled, and short roped, and we had plenty of time to rest in the shade and take in the views. Lots of variety with the rappelling and each with great instruction. We had SO much fun. My family of four joined Rock About for a half-day top-rope climbing trip at Reimer's Ranch. Our guide, Moshe, was fantastic! In addition to being knowledgeable and safety-conscious, he was patient, encouraging and charismatic. Moshe showed us locations to climb that challenged our varying skill levels, from beginner to experienced indoor gym climber. He explained climbing technique so well that we were belaying each other independently. My family had a great time! read more

We were visiting from San Diego and looking for something to do that involved climbing and water, and this place caught the eye of my 21 yo son who is in to rock climbing. I was impressed that it has a 5 star rating and after the experience, I can see why. First, we were trying to book at the last minute on the same day and on the website it says to call to see if openings for same day. Adam picked up the phone right away though this was a last minute request, said he could accommodate us for the afternoon for a party of 5. He said he would have to send the text a little later though because he was on a climb changing bolts as he was talking with us. In other words, he picked up the phone and responded right away in the middle of a climb. Impressive! This climbing adventure is like no other I've seen before. You basically take a boat out of Pace Bend Park and go up to some shear rock cliffs that mostly go straight up from the water or overhand and you climb up the rocks. You can go as high or low as you want and if you feel you can't do it, or just accidentally start falling, you fall into the water. We met him at the boat ramp, and there was an ice chest to keep drinks cool. He understood that some of us had no experience with climbing, and others like my son had a lot more experience, but the entire time he slowly escalated the climbs in a way that everyone got to do what they felt comfortable doing while allowing those with more experience to attempt more challenging climbs. It was also obvious that Adam is an expert climber and was constantly monitoring the depth of the water area of the climb using sonar to look for any underwater boulders and to double check the depth before the climbs. He also knew every climb spot perfectly and where were the best holds and used a laser pointer to assist every climber during the climb giving suggestions along the way. Starting out with a simple walk out onto the shore and climb a short way to a 10 foot jump into the water, to a high vertical cliff the younger ones in our group (age 17-21) did, this was an unforgettable experience. My wife an I just enjoyed taking photos and watching the climbers and enjoying the view. I can't say enough great things about this experience, and highly recommend it to anyone, but particular to those who enjoy climbs and the experience of trying to climb without a rope knowing that you have the safety net of the cool water below you. Our kids spent the rest of that day reliving the moments, photos and videos from our incredible trip, and though this happened in the beginning of our trip it will likely be the most memorable experience they had of the entire vacation. read more

Rock-About Climbing Adventures and our guide, Russell, were excellent. I would use them again in a minute. I trusted them with my teen-age son (and myself) and they did not disappoint. We had very limited climbing experience--limited primarily to artificial walls we climbed on vacations, school retreats, rock scrambles on mountain hikes, and the like. As our first experience top-roping on granite, we could not have enjoyed it more. We learned a lot, pushed ourselves, met nice people, and created a wonderful memory. This is by far my son's favorite summer camp! He is 12 y/o and has been going for the past 3 years and wants to pursue rock climbing more seriously. The guides make this camp so much fun and no experience is needed. They do different climbs each day and offer a swim to cool off. I booked a guided trip to Reimer's Ranch as a bachelor party activity. We were a group of three experienced climbers and two no0b climbers and we all had an absolute blast. The Reimer's Ranch climbing area was vast with plenty of routes that Russel set for us. He catered the trip excellently to our group and prepped all of us very well to tackle fun and challenging routes. We went in early May and it was hot but with the combination of trees and surrounding walls, we were in the shade for at least half the day. Boat Climbing Tour - Deep Water Soloing - highly recommend to various ages and levels. My husband, I, and our 7 year old went. We have been climbing for a couple years but rarely get outdoors and my kiddo only wants to climb 50% of the time so I was unsure how this would go for 4 hours. But it was a really amazing experience that everyone loved and a complete highlight of our trip. Adam was a really great guide and his tips really helped especially for our kiddo. We had the greatest day with Russell. Part of the reason we picked Austin for a quick spring break trip was because of the rock climbing trips offered by Rock-About, so you can imagine our nerves when the weather forecast showed rain for the day we had scheduled for our climb. We got a call from Russell the night before suggesting that we push back our start time. The day of, it looked like it might not ever stop raining, but we decided to meet in the parking lot anyway...right as beautiful blue skies appeared. Whew!!! Oh my gosh...I am so glad Russell was flexible with our start time and willing to wait out the rain. My son and I had the BEST time rock climbing with him. We got all of the safety and technique reminders at the start and then Russell let my son climb until he couldn't anymore...about 3 hours of non-stop action! He even convinced me to give it a try and was so encouraging that I actually made it up a route. Amazing! If you are in Austin and thinking about hiring a rock climbing guide, either to try outdoor climbing for the first time or to improve your skills, you should absolutely hire this company. Great experience learning to Lead Climb! Highly recommend taking a course and having a knowledgeable guide like ours. Russel was passionate, entertaining, and deeply informative. I've learned to lead from friends and did a little mock leading before but nothing beats a professional. He really drives home the point of safety and correct procedures and techniques to ensure you're informed and well versed to do it yourself. They taught us how to keep ourselves and others safe while climbing as well as take us to different locations so we'd always be climbing something new. The instructors reminded us what we needed to do to stay safe when we forgot, and go help whenever we got stuck during climbing. My boyfriend and I were visiting Austin for the first time last March and among food trucks, music venues and bar hopping downtown we wanted something unique to round out our visit.....enter Rock-About. Neither of us had ever climbed before (save for a trip with girl-scouts at age 10) so we were a little anxious to start with an all day outdoor excursion. Luckily we had an amazing instructor 'Bird Dog' who took us through safety training, led us up Enchanted rock with his comedic relief and had an incredible day of climbing in the sun. We opted for 101 Basic Rock Climbing which was perfect - there are 5-6 different rocks to climb depending on where you end up on the dome, all with varying levels of difficulty from easy to moderate. I really like to push myself physically and ended up with the moderate climbs which were perfect for my first day and felt like I got the most out of it. I strongly recommend this to locals and visitors alike - it's an incredible experience (even if you're not the most outdoorsy/adventurous type) you will not be disappointed. read more

We experienced an INCREDIBLE rock climbing class on Saturday out at Enchanted Rock! We NEVER thought that we'd get to do such RAD climbing as beginners, but Rock-About's spot-on teaching and coaching took us to new heights - literally! We loved every bit of the class and the challenges it presented. We signed up for a climbing course with Russell and he did an excellent job of explaining everything both at an adult level (for me) and a child level (for my son). He set up four different climbs for us to get a good variety and that were all at our skill level. Our instructor was very patient and knew when to hold back to let us figure it out and when to step in to help. After 5 hours of climbing, we were happily exhausted. I wanted to leave a review for Adam and our guide Russel(Aka the big Lebowski?). Adam provided great communication ahead of our trip and worked with me to attempt to accommodate a last minute change in our booking. Although we ended up sticking with our original plan things couldn't have worked out any better. I've been a long time climber and requested a hybrid lead climbing guide and beginners trip due to the vast difference in experience between my friend and myself. Russel who has been climbing and guiding for over 20 years provided us with a masterfully laid out day involving basic instruction, observing us climbing and giving both of us expert guidance on lead climbing and belaying. I've had guides in Yosemite and this was one of the most productive and fun experiences I have had anywhere. We had a great day climbing with Bob at Barton Creek Greenbelt. We are two adults with a couple of months' experience indoor climbing, and Bob put up a bunch of top ropes so we could do multiple climbs at levels that ranged from confidence-boosting to, ahem, rather challenging. He let us work them on our own, but was ready with great suggestions when we were over-challenged. We felt totally safe and supported throughout. I have climbed with Adam and Rock About twice. The first time was back in January (2012) at Enchanted Rock through one of his groupon promotions. It was a great trip. The scenery was gorgeous, and while the weather was a little chilly in the morning, it warmed up nicely in the afternoon. There were about 7 of us there for the groupon, and a large group a boy scouts that Rock-About was also taking on for the day. They did a good job keeping us separated, so we didn't have to deal with the noise and everything else that goes along with a group of 20 obnoxious (sorry parents) kids. Adam and his guiding staff were extremely professional. For all of us there for the groupon it was our first time climbing outside, and we went through a comprehensive belay/safety instruction in the morning. There was plenty of time for actual climbing, too. The staff had set up top-ropes on several routes, and after the ~40 minute hike to the climbing area, we got to it. The routes were of appropriate difficulty for beginners, and the one wall we were on kept us occupied the whole day, and we each got in 4-5 routes. The guides were always on hand to supervise and give us help when we needed it. I had a fantastic time, and was immediately addicted to the solitude and focus involved in climbing outside. The second time I climbed with Adam was at Reimers Ranch two months later. My brother was in town visiting, and we had decided we wanted to get more serious about climbing, so we asked Adam to show us how to improve. This session was much more technically focused than the groupon one. The day was spent on slightly more difficult climbs, and Adam was great about giving us pointers and tips. He also taught us how to rappel. I'd definitely recommend Rock-About's guiding service to anyone looking to get into climbing, or just wanting to spend a great day outdoors doing something fun and exciting!. It was a big help to me and my brother and I; we progressed very fast, and have been climbing and leading outside independently for ~6 months now. read more

Last Sunday, my 16 year old son and I spent the day with Adam from Rock-About. We've both had minimal experience at indoor rock gyms and have enjoyed hiking in Central and West Texas and in Colorado. I wanted to take our outdoor adventures to another level and Rock-About was just what we need to get started. Adam is super personable and made learning the ropes (sorry for the pun) very enjoyable. The mix of instruction and demonstration had us moving up the cliffs along the Barton Creek Greenbelt in no time. We were stepping out of our comfort zone but safety was always a priority.
