I hadn't been to Rock Barrell for over 10+ years, but it was just as magical as I remember it! I had the grandkids for a sleepover and I decided that they should experience the magic! My 9 year old grandson wasn't too excited to go but once he stepped inside and saw a shark tooth, he was all over it! Even hubby was so impressed and glad he tagged along. My granddaughters found so many pretty things but I limited everyone to two items each. The girls each wanted a shell ring and a turtle jewelry pendant. HUGE selection of jewelry making supplies, including stone, jewels, metal findings, etc. and so many beautifully polished rocks and stone pieces and crystals. The prices seemed very reasonable. After we took the grandkids to the Perot museum last summer and they loved the huge rock displays, my oldest granddaughter wanted a rock tumbler for her birthday. We did fulfill that wish and even helped her tumble a couple of sets of rocks over the month long process. I brought our results with us to the store. I asked the young lady at the counter about what might have happened. The kind older man behind the counter walked by and asked so nicely if he might step in to help. He explained that rocks have different levels of hardness and we could probably get best results by tumbling all like rocks at a time. Makes perfect sense! I was just so impressed at how kind (to us and to each other) and helpful everyone was. I think it was a father (owner perhaps?) and daughter working together and the working relationship was beautiful to experience. I love a crystal journey and will spend hours in crystal shops, but triple that time if I'm headed to The Rock Barrell. There's truly so much to see and just when you think you've seen it all, you find a strangle talisman tucked away in a corner that you're weirdly obsessed with. It's amazing. Also, you get exactly what you pay for. I love being able to find some beautiful, large crystal and geode pieces for an excellent price. I don't know how they do it, honestly. I think 99% of my gifts come from here. The outside is quite unassuming for what's inside, but I think that makes it all the more magical. I enjoy shopping here for gems and minerals. This is is not a metaphysical store so do not expect to find candles, oils, and etc. Everything I have purchased was reasonably priced. I enjoy listening to my music and perusing for hours. They have tons of supplies and it can be overwhelming. They have beads, charms, jewelry making supplies, books, lapidary supplies, cabs, pendants, gems, and minerals. Amazing customer service. Everyone I have encountered has been super helpful and kind. I have overheard other customers become flustered for being approached and asked if all is well for a second time. Not once have I felt weird being asked that multiple times. I recommend looking at the tall glass cases for nicer specimens, harder to find minerals, and some nice pendants. read more

Yes you can find beads on Amazon, but I have NEVER been impressed with the selection, the images or the actual product delivered. You really need to see beads in person! I am a big fan of local beading stores and I found the staff at Rock Barrel to be excellent- they were helpful without interrupting my browsing. They were knowledgeable about the type of stones I was looking for and knew their inventory well. I hate to make gender assumptions but I just couldn't imagine the men working here sitting around making cute earrings, but I was wrong. They know their stuff. You can tell that the owners/buyers are the ones working the floor. I make trendier jewelry, so I wasn't able to find exactly what I was looking for (hence the 4 stars), but I did get some great findings at an excellent price. If you like fun, whimsical jewelry, this place is great. Many beads were star and heart shaped which is cool, but not my personal style. Took my daughter (who is REALLY into crystals) here for some supplies for her jewelry making. I was just along for the ride, but the moment we stepped inside I was enthralled- There is SO much to see in this shop! Even if you're not super into stones (raw, tumbled, beads, geodes; they have it all!) this is a really interesting place to visit. The staff are super helpful and knowledgeable; even as I waited in line to make my purchase one of the employees was showing me how certain stones glow under black lights (so neat!). Pricing is so reasonable too. Example- We bought 3 selenite crystals for less than what we paid for just 1 on Amazon. They also have a ton of jewelry making supplies and tools, soapstone carvings, fossils, beads, shells, even shark teeth! We'll definitely be returning here often. Literally wall to wall beads, with lapidary specimens displayed throughout the store. It looks like a museum when you walk in. Great book titles; these guys really know their stuff. I've been buying beads for a long time, their prices are on point. They also sell Lortone tumblers and specimens for tumbling, as well as other equipment. Pricing on these matched Amazon.com Other tools, sheet metal, unique findings; I found these really tiny (2mm) pearls I'd seen at Sundance catalog. They also had 24 guage ball head pins, perfect for tiny beads, which I've never seen before. The shop staff was very attentive, I noticed they were friendly with everyone. As soon as I walked in, I was overwhelmed with the variety of crystals, beads, and other Knick knacks that graced The Rock Barrell. It was a good overwhelming feeling since I recently moved to Texas and wasn't sure if there was going to be a "crystal" store. It wasn't what I was used to, but, I'll definitely go back again. I walked around and started to pick things up. I was provided with a tray. Within the tray, there were little bags and a pen. I had never seen where you can write on the bags, and it's really not my thing. I do wish that that they had little print outs of the crystal's meaning, everywhere I've been to has had that and this was the first store that didn't. I have a forever running list of items that I need, and when I come across something I don't know, I normally pull the piece of paper or google it. I am used to smaller stores, so, I was amazed by the various sizes of the crystals and the variety. I was also surprised on how inexpensive these were. Where I'm from, my total would have been over $100, I paid a little less than $50. I would have rated 5 stars if the store was a little more organized and if they provided the papers of what the meanings of the crystals were. Also, the stickers of what the crystal is and the price are affixed to the crystals, which, I'm not a fan of. Typically if you work with crystals or you're an avid collector, you know what it is and how to "ring it up". read more

They are friendly once you speak to them or need help, but not when I enter the store. I've shopped here multiple times. I didn't like that the staff isn't too familiar with the actual materials when I have questions. It would be nice if they were a more educated with the minerals sold at the location. Michael's and Joann's don't even come CLOSE. There is a reason this place has been around for nearly 40 years. Whether you are just starting out or are a seasoned pro at making jewelry, this place has it ALL...beads, semi-precious stones (with and without drilled holes), charms, chains, wire, string...seriously, the selection is massive. Any style of jewelry can be made with the things they have here. One cool thing is that they even have drawers of vintage odds and ends, for those with a quirky sensibility. You will also find geology books, jewelry-making manuals, and tons of beautiful rocks, minerals, and fossils in different sizes, all perfect for display anywhere. The staff is extremely helpful, and are always on hand to answer questions/offer input on your creative ideas. I like hopping up here. It's the largest rock shop in the DFW area, and their prices are reasonable...not cheap or good deals, but not overpriced either. They have a good selection of minerals especially, but also they have fossils, meteorites, and all the rock hound supplies that go with it all - such as stands, tumblers, tools, books, etc. What I like is they have minerals at most price ranges, from under $50 to the hundreds to even in the thousands for a few pieces. They also have a HUGE selection of jewelry-making supplies, beads, strands, and all that. I don't get into it at all, so I'm slightly annoyed so much of the floor space has been given over to that market, but I understand they have to supply what is demanded. read more
