PROS + beautiful, well-maintained golf course/grounds within view of the dining room + outdoor dining is also available + super friendly, efficient bartender (she's been there every single Wednesday I come in during 2023) + decent food... comes out hot and fresh! + moderately priced + many key places are within the vicinity (see my list below) + pro shop is next door + casual dress code is okay CONS I feel like the dining area could use a makeover. I had marked these GPS coordinates months ago, making a note that Rene Anthony's was notable the highest-rated restaurant on the long drive between Dallas and Tularosa, NM. But I began to doubt myself as glimpses through the thick fog revealed no civilization, nothing but empty fields. Was there really a restaurant out here open at 5:12 a.m. or did my typically methodical road trip research contain an error? And suddenly, there it was, an oasis of an eatery standing alone in an ordinary building on the south side of the highway surrounded by nothingness. I strolled into the small dining room filled with a dozen truckers waking up to a vivid discussion about the NFL. A city slicker seemingly out of place, I was welcomed with open arms and placed my dine-in order at the register. The only breakfast option was a lengthy list of breakfast burritos, a dish I don't normally enjoy. But this was different. Chef Anthony Sanchez is making magic here. Ordering the porky pig, a massive burrito absolutely stuffed with fresh chorizo, onions, and peppers, this is pure deliciousness in the middle of nowhere!

RATING BREAKDOWN Food: 4.5 | Service: 4 | Ambiance: 3 | Price: 3 PARKING There is ample parking out front even for trucks with trailers and big rigs. LOCATION/AMBIANCE The location is a bit outside of Hobbs, NM on the Carlsbad Highway. It's near the Arkansas Junction headed west towards Carlsbad. It's a small place with a few tables and booths. You order and pay at the register as soon as you walk in then wait to be served. You must ask for a key to the lone restroom which is accessible going back outside. It's better than nothing. It's not the cleanest & hot water at the sink never flowed for me. I wish they would take down the old signage already. It's been there for years. I remember seeing a post back on March 2023 that Renee Anthony was opening soon. It's time for new signage! Their music was a bit on the loud side when I first walked in. THE GRUB They offer a breakfast and lunch menu only. No dinner. Or supper as we call it in my family. The lunch menu is confusing because I heard the group in front of me order burgers. I never saw them on there. I opted for a cheeseburger because my friend had one a couple of weeks ago and she said it was amazing with jalapenos. Well, those got left off of my order. I should have had the hostess repeat my order back to me, but they were fairly busy & she seemed a bit flustered at times. A combo with a side of homemade fries and a sealed drink of your choice (I went with a strawberry/kiwi Shasta) costed $16.58. It came with chopped onions and tomatoes, lettuce, and pickles. Your choice of ketchup, mayo, and/or mustard comes on the side. Plastic was accepted. LITTLE YELPER'S CLUB I didn't see any kid's menu items nor is it a baby or toddler-friendly restaurant... no high chairs. No baby changing station available in the lone restroom either. SERVICE I told the friendly hostess on 1/26/2024 that I wanted something spicy with my cheeseburger if I could in fact order one. I suggested jalapenos, but I think she got distracted as I often witnessed while waiting for my takeout because they were nonexistent. The deprivation killed me! Lol. MY FAVORITE PART... The burger ended up being a 1/2 pounder. A lot more lunch than I anticipated (thankfully) at that price. Next time I'm down for something different, though! NOT SO FAVORITE PART... Asking for the key to the restroom (bleh), no hot water at the sink, and the price (steep!). TIPS + Call head for takeout or dine in. + They have an assortment of desserts in the fridge next to the beverage fridge.

I've been hearing about the place from my parents who eat here multiple times a week. They LOVE it…read more I came for dinner around 7:30 with my mom on a Tuesday and we were seated right away in the beautifully, yet minimally, decorated dining area. Service was extra friendly and super quick, and our food came out rather quick as well. The owner did a walk through to talk with all of the patrons and that was a nice touch. The plates are enormous with no shortage of food. I ordered the stacked red brisket enchiladas and, holy mother of God was there a generous portion of meat. I could barely eat half of just the enchiladas, as the stacked come with 2 eggs (THE BEST IF YOU REALLY WANT TO EXPERIENCE INCREDIBLE ENCHILADAS IS TO ADD A FRIED EGG). I had a bite of my mom's Chile Relleno and it was perfect! Crunchy, filled with ground meat and over a cheese sauce- mmmmmm. We of course had plenty left and asked for boxes and the server even brought containers to take the large portion of salsa home with fresh bags of chips to go. Super generous. I forgot to mention my mom insisted we order the Fried Mushrooms since I'm a huge mushroom fan and she said they love them leftover in the airfryer. They, too, were epic and we barely put a dent in them. Pretty much brought them all home;) For the amount of food we received, I feel like we got a steal of deal. They have daily food and drink specials that are amazing deals. I had a $4 margarita that was good (I added a sangria shot and it made it kindof sweet for my liking). I hope we come back while I'm here this visit and I know my parents will continue to be regulars here.

However, my wife and I very recently went to The Plaza for dinner on a Friday night and there was a so-called "mariachi" band playing. The sign said they'd be through playing by 9 p.m. but well after that time they were still "playing," if you can call it that. I don't know what was worse, the fact that this band was so deafening we could barely hear one another speak across the table or the fact that the band was absolutly horrendous and was not playing mariachi music but lame covers of Journey and Neil Diamond. How anybody got the idea that this band would improve the customer's experience is beyond me. It was so bad that we cancelled our food order, paid for our drinks and didn't stick around to drink them. We fled this establishment with our ears ringing and went to Cancun for a calm, civilized meal. I've been a regular customer of The Plaza but I don't think I'll be back.

I had the Picadillo and Eggs and this was great - well spiced ground beef with a side of eggs, this arrived with potatoes and tortillas. It was a nice protein-forward meal and a more unique breakfast option, which I appreciated. The space is no-frills and a bit rustic, but they offer good food at very reasonable prices.

HAIR IN OUR FOOD As a Yelp Elite Member, I take my reviews…read moreseriously and always aim to be fair. I don't like giving bad reviews, but this experience left me disgusted and disappointed. The food was good, and everyone in our group enjoyed their meals. We even packed up leftovers to take home. But just as we were finishing, my grandson's mother noticed a thick, coarse hair on his plate. Finding a hair in food is always stomach-turning, but discovering it after I had already eaten made it worse. It made me wonder: What else did I miss? I showed the hair to our server, who immediately removed the plate--and to be fair, I could tell the hair wasn't from her. The issue was how management handled it: a 10% discount and zero real concern. No apology from a manager, no real effort to make it right--just a small discount and moving on. That response left a bad taste in my mouth. Had it not been for the hair, I would have rated this place 4 stars. The restaurant was clean, the atmosphere was casual, and the food was enjoyable. But the way this was handled knocked my rating down to 2 stars. We were so put off that, even though our leftovers were packed and ready to go, we left them behind. I debated between 1 and 2 stars but settled on 2 because the food itself was good. That said, this experience made it impossible to recommend this place.

Spicy Beef Nachos Appetizer: Chips topped with queso, green onions, jalapeños, black olives, tomatoes, guacamole, and sour cream. My friend got this and I had a couple bites. Chips were not soggy and it was large enough to cover as his dinner. Green Chile Burger: Topped with monterey jack cheese and roasted chopped Chaves County-grown hot green chile. Served on a jalapeño bun with a side of our hot green chile sauce. Their signature burger and it tasted good. I don't need too much food but the amount of fries I got was too little even for me. Got two Johnny Walker Blacks with a splash of coke and they came well mixed and quickly. We did end up getting rained in and hilariously went back for a second dinner to wait out the rain. Black corn taquitos were OK, I would not get the fried shrimp basked again, the shrimp was too small and there was too much breading.

The hostess (whose name I forget) went out of her way to take special care of our huge group of 10 people who dropped in on her on a busy night. Our server Heather was a total rock star! She had never heard of Pink Floyd (heresy!) but treated us like royalty. All in all I would have to believe that Peppers treats every single customer like this - and highly recommend a stop.
