The food here is amazing! What a hidden gem! I had the French toast and bacon with an over easy egg. The egg was cooked perfectly! It was way too much food for me so I shared with my friend. He said the French toast was light and fluffy. He really enjoyed his burrito too! I liked the fact that it was family owned and run. One of the gals told us a little bit of the history of the restored building. It used to be part of an amusement park. Quick place to grab lunch or breakfast. I wish they didn't use throw away utensils and plates for eat, in meals. It is kind of hard to find if you don't know where it is. I have lots of options and my favorites include the brisket nachos, the BLT, the Philly cheesesteak, and the pulled pork sandwich. The fries are thin and crispy. The breakfast burritos are a little large for me I can't eat them all in one sitting. I'm not sure they did a whole lot to the interior of the building in way of decoration, but it gets the job done. Prices are reasonable. The staff is great. read more

I stopped here for lunch and just had their Cuban sandwich and an iced tea, with chips. The Cuban was quite good, though not authentic -- not a pressed sandwich, closer to a hoagie. Still, very good and filling for what it was, and I would order it again. Tea was fine, chips were a bit bland. I didn't have any trouble finding the place, Google took me straight to the parking lot, and I just needed to know that the entrance is on the lake side. Service was friendly, and the food came out quickly. I sat at a table in the rustic dining room, and it was not too busy at the time, calm and fairly quiet. I also grabbed a latte on my way out, which was okay. The lake side is a nice place for a stroll, and there is even a bridge which crosses the lake. Opened since 2019, PJ&B's seems to be a popular spot for locals to grab some breakfast, coffee, and a quick, no frills lunch. The Good: *Fairly large menu that has a little bit of something for everyone. Including lots of New Mexican, Mexican, and American cuisines. *Green Chile Pork was delicious and had great flavor, albeit a touch on the salty side. *BBQ Beef Brisket served on the nachos was actually quite fantastic, and better than some actual restaurants where Q is their raison d'être. Smokey, beefy, and a nice bark made this quite the pleasure to eat. The rest of the nachos were whatever, but I'll take that brisket any day of the week. *Service by Brandy was great. She was patient and very helpful when it came to ordering, as she knew the menu backward and forwards. *Take this with a grain of salt since we're from Cali, but the prices were quite inexpensive, at least by our standards. *Great location near the Pecos River, marina, and some parks The Meh: *They have a mind-bogglingly huge burrito selection. I mean, literally, an entire sheet dedicated to every possible burrito combination in the world. 0_o *As I mentioned earlier, most of the dishes were a bit on the salty side, but nothing inedibley so. The Ugly: *All dishes are served on throw-away dishes and silverware. I understand why they do it, but it's not the most environmentally conscious way to go about things. Great hidden gem. It can be difficult to find. Don't trust navigation. The parking is unusual and navigation tells you to turn into the golf course. But to get to the restaurant there is a 1 way opposite you. You have to drive past for a minute then turn into the next parking. Then drive through the lot to get close. But it's worth it. We ate lunch the first day. The next day we wanted breakfast before leaving but other places were closed. So we returned. Staff was great both days. The sitting is nicely spaced and cozy. read more

Came here on my way out of Carlsbad. Ordered the PJs eye opener to go. The burrito was huge, definitely kept me full all day. Had it with the green salsa. I like the variety of options they had in terms of burritos, although it took me a few minutes to choose between all the options. Have eaten here five or six times in a 2 week period since discovering them. This had become my burrito spot for American style breakfast burritos until two weeks ago. I placed my to go pick up order from the West Church location and the young homosexual sounding male was rude to me because I asked him something about one of their signature named Burritos, which they have like 40 of them so forgive me for asking what type of meats come in a specific burrito. He was rude to me at six in the morning and actually just hung up on me after I ordered. He just stated "is that all?" and when I said yes, he hung up. More rudeness, so anyway, I go pick up the burrito 20 minutes later. I watched them through the drive-through window as what appeared to maybe be his dad cooking. I had to wait even though there wasn't anybody in line and it didn't seem like they were too busy, but he was actually still making my burrito. I saw him roll it up and bag it for me. A lot people getting it to go you know we're not eating the burritos we buy until a little bit later or much later. I did not eat this burrito for about an hour, when I did finally eat it, The potatoes were still very uncooked, crunchy nastiness, and I will say normally, I liked this place because it was a pretty good ratio of everything inside the burrito. This particular burrito was a lot of raw potato, didn't seem like two eggs, which is probably pretty standard in a breakfast burrito of this size and I would say their burritos and just not much sausage or bacon or much of anything else and cheese so I was extremely disappointed. I ended up eating most of what I could that wasn't the raw potatoes as this was my only food I had brought with me to the field that day so to say less I have not been back. I will say the previous four or five times I've been to either the West Church location or the one by the river anytime any of the ladies are working it's always the food's always been top-notch, but I just couldn't afford to let that happen again, especially coupled with the rudeness and then the fact that the burrito is basically $13. Furthermore, what made me stop going for lunch to the location by the river? I had a burger at lunch one day and that made me not want to try their lunch anymore, that hamburger patty was just a Sysco patty. Reminds me of school lunch. I just don't understand why it's so hard anymore to find a good burger patty anywhere ridiculous especially for the price that everybody charges. read more

Seven of us went to PJ's & J's Rio Cafe this morning for breakfast. We had a variety of items for breakfast. We had pancakes, French toast, a couple of omelets and a variety of sides: breakfast potatoes and refried beans. The food was all good but nothing extraordinary. Their location is at a great spot near the Pecos River beach, water park, playground and river walk. Service was excellent. One negative aspect was that all of their meals and drinks (coffee, etc.) were served in styrofoam containers. read more

The price was way too much for the quality of food issued out here. I've had better food at IHOP and I don't eat there. My eggs, hash browns(10-14 cubed potatoes/less than a hand full), bacon (2slices) & sausage came out as eggs, bacon, potatoes and old refried beans instead of sausage. All for about $18... At least the pack of flies swarming around the restaurant will be pleased with the leftovers from today's order. read more

While on a visit to Carlsbad 4/08/24 we stopped by at PJ&B's for breakfast. I was pleasantly surprised by the low price for a good sized burrito and coffee latte. The waitresses are very friendly and the view of the river as well as birds in the trees nearby were entertaining. We will definitely be back! read more

PJ & Bs was a little hard to spot at 6am, lol. But, boy am I happy I found this place. This here, is one of Carlsbads hidden Gems. The menu has plenty to choose from. Great spot to meet friends for brunch as the scenery is hard to beat. This place is nice and clean with plenty of room inside to dine-in. I ordered the Big Red burrito which consists of Asado, Beans&Cheese. The asado is on point! Not to spicy and very tasteful! I'll be going again very soon to try other menu items.. Lattes are great. Pancakes are great. To go service is great which we used twice on our trip. Potatoes are hard, bland, and no seasonings. Bacon is flimsy and undercooked in our opinion. This was a really fun place to eat. Service was quick it was packed and we didn't have to wait long. I got the breakfast bowl, and an iced white mocha. The coffee was sweet, usually local places make it so bitter you could grow a chest hair, but they had it just right. You could also order a plain coffee, and they had tons of creamer options for people, they get as a society we are serious about the cream with our coffee. The breakfast bowl had so many yummy toppings, I will be going back for sure. The place also had such a fun vibe, and lots of cutesy signs. My husband decided he didn't want a campsite breakfast and searched for diners. This place showed up on his search and we're glad it did!!! While on vacation we wanted to try some of the well rated local spots. This cafe did not disappoint and definitely lived up to its ratings. The location is a little confusing to find if you're from out of town as it's a little building nestled between other buildings. Ordering is done at the counter and then it's self seating in one of the three adjoining rooms. My husband got a chorizo based breakfast burrito and I got a two egg omelette with chorizo. For only being two eggs, my omelet was massive! The flavors were amazing on both of our plates. The salsas are all very mild so if you like spicy don't expect too much of a bite but they taste great either way. We wish we lived local so we could go back because everything tasted so amazing that we want to try more from the menu! We would definitely return if we are ever in the area again! read more

We came here because of the Yelp reviews. The building where the restaurant is faces the river. So make sure you go all the way around the building to find it. A nice gentlemen showed me and opened the door to an order up to the counter with big signs of what they offer. It was a big list! I got a 3-egg omelette with chorizo, sausage and bell pepper. You could add more ingredients for more money if you want. My son got the Iron Man Burrito (bacon, beef, potatoes), and my husband got the BBQ lunch plate. We ate all our food up, my son should have ordered something with eggs in it as he really wanted it, but he ordered too fast at the counter without thinking. So I gave him some of my yummy omelette. The fries are excellent crispy shoestring fries. The BLT is an amazing sandwich stuffed with a shocking amount of bacon. The bacon cheeseburger was "awesome" - juicy and delicious. The turkey bacon green chili sandwich was "outstanding!" The tortilla chips were on the bland side - no salt, no lime to speak of - choose the fries instead. Well I thought I could start this with a cute catch phrase like, "Cute on the outside, but gross on the inside". However, the fact you had to use the outside restrooms that were also gross put an end to that idea. Let me start with, I'm confused as to how this place has more then 1, maybe 2 stars tops. It's out of the way, so no convenience there. Then when you do find it, the BBQ is sadly not worth the journey. I ordered brisket, my partner ordered pulled pork. The plus not dry, I can't say much else for the food. The BBQ either has way to much bottled smoke or greasy & flavorless, I'm not even sure how one pulls off keeping the fat & killing the flavor. Guess southern New Mexico is still not close enough to the Texas border to make good BBQ. There are beans, refried canned beans that have been sitting in the warmer way to long. The French Fries, my partner felt were the best part of the meal, maybe it's because they were so over cooked you could not eat them. They didn't forget the pickles & onions, thank goodness because to me the best part of the meal were the salty pickles that helped cleanse my palette after that meal. The whole place is in need of a decor remodel & a cleaning. The lake and park are cute, but everything in the area seams a little unmaintained. read more
