I live nearby, so I signed up for a membership. The process was seamless, and Ben was very helpful and professional throughout the process. The gym has a good amount of bouldering, mainly intermediate V4-6 and some top-roping with quite a few autobelay routes. There are yoga classes twice a week which is included in a membership though I have yet to try a class. Otherwise, it's a fairly standard climbing gym with interesting climbs, especially for beginner and intermediate climbers. They have a room full of bike racks as soon as you walk in which is nice, as someone who bikes to the gym. The facility is pretty large with a lounging area, training areas, plenty of storage space, and clean bathrooms. You do have to bring your own chalk (or rent gear which comes with chalk), and the chalk that is for sale in the store is not that great in my opinion and doesn't fully coat the fingers. read more

Came visiting Boston with my boyfriend and we went to rock spot to climb! The gym is decent in size with both top roping/auto belay and bouldering walls. The top roping routes are relatively short comparing to other gyms that I have been to. If you're into top roping more, I will probably not recommend this place. The gym also doesn't offer belaying devices so you will need to bring your own. The bouldering levels starts with B1-4 before the V grade, which is great for people that are climbing for the first time. They also have a back wall where you can top out and get to a slide. Perfect for little kids! Their bouldering walls are also higher than what I'm used to. What I didn't really like about the bouldering there was that many of the problems were overhang and the technique that was required for a lot of problems were very similar. There weren't that many holds variety and they were mainly jugs and I don't think I saw any crimps nor slopers. Lockers are also not free and if you don't want to pay, you will have to use the cubbies. They have other gym equipment like treadmill and elliptical but I think I only saw one of each. Overall, I think this gym is perfect for people that are coming here for fun or for people that want to practice overhang problems. For someone like myself, who has been climbing a lot for the last few months but am still somewhat new to climbing, I think I will prefer going to a gym that has more holds variety so that I can practice on different holds. read more

Definitely one of the larger indoor climbing gyms that I've been to in the greater Boston area! This Rock Spot location has a bit of something for everyone which is why it's one of my favorites (brownie points for easy parking). It's suitable for all skill levels - even true beginners. I love that they have a tier level below v0 which has made it so much easier to get introduced to climbing. They also have top roping at this location along with all sorts of classes and an event space! The only drawback of this place is that it does tend to get crowded in the evenings during peak times and also there's almost guaranteed for there to always be a few kids birthday parties over the weekends but generally it's contained to one area of the gym so it's not too distracting. read more

I got a Groupon for a day pass including gear for under $20. When I arrived, I wasn't actually sure which building it was because there wasn't great signage. The check-in process was a bit chaotic - it didn't seem like a great system was in place. There was a mandatory safety training for first-timers, so we also had to wait a bit for that. All things considered, once I actually started climbing, it was a great time. My favorite part about this place is the auto-belay walls. A lot of the people I came with weren't certified to belay, so this was a great option in addition to the bouldering. read more

Screw the infinity pool, this place has an infinity wall. It's technically called a treadwall, but it's basically a rock climbing machine that goes in loops and you can adjust the speed. A level 5 speed is the fastest. It's pretty tough to keep up. This place has a really helpful staff and a lot of activities to do. If there are too many people climbing, you can practice your balance on a slack line, run on a treadmill, lift weights, hang on a wall to train your grip, etc. For the noobs, they have this awesome slide you can go down when you successfully climb over the edge of the bouldering area. Sometimes there are discounts on certain days or even on Groupon. It's close to the Broadway T stop. It's a little out of the way for me, so I probably won't come too often. read more

My friend has been climbing at this gym since 2016, and after going, I completely understand why! The staff (Tim, Susan and a very cool worker with turquoise hair) were all so welcoming, prioritized our safety, and explained the basics so well. They've got liquid chalk that works amazingly and a wide variety of both bouldering and lead climbing. I appreciate how we're able to rent all the gear we need, and the absolute best part of the gym is the community! This rock spot is amazing! The staff are all friendly and they really take the time to know the members (I usually go on a guest day pass, but have had great conversations with the staff). The rock walls have varying levels of difficulty, from beginner to advanced. They even have free weights, fitness equippment, and an exerciae studio for yoga. There's street parking and additional parking down the corner from the location. If you're new to climbing or are working on V9s, this rock spot is the spot for you! read more

I've really fallen in love with this place! So kid-friendly, and so great if you're not into belaying other people, maybe because you had an accident as a kid and have burn scars on your hands from a rope and letting a rope slide on them "for fun" actually is torture. There are still walls to climb with the standard belay method (ouch) but many spots have an autobelay. Yay! My kids and I can climb side by side, which is so much fun. The bouldering space is fantastic with a section more for kids/beginners where you can scale the wall and use a slide to come down. Exhilarating! There are monkey bars and lots of slack lines, too. On the non-kid side, the hard core sexy forearmed guests can try challenging climbs and practice with all different types of grips or the rings. Plenty of locker space and benches to change, great gear rental options, including locks, and treadmills if you want to have a full gym experience. There are a few tables and chairs if you'd like a break or want to set you kid up nearby on the iPad so you can climb at peace for hours. Outside of the gym there are changing rooms, bathrooms, a family bathroom, more lockers, a store with occasionally great sales, two big tables and lots of snacks/ice cream/cold brew you can buy. You can do birthday parties and they offer yoga classes. There is a big space right when you come in to store your bike and two computers to make registration easier. Staff are unfailingly friendly and encouraging. They offer climbing classes and I've seen parents - geniuses! - put their kids in class and sit in the lobby at the table catching up. My only complaint is that the bathrooms/changing rooms are always dirty. Doesn't keep me from going back week after week! Check it out, it is a great place to take the whole family. read more

The staff here is great, the manager, not so much. He was very demanding and rude, telling us that we were not allowed to practice rope tying because we weren't "belayed trained" at this this gym. Just letting you know, we were not at all climbing or belaying one another, but practicing the belay knots, in which we were given permission to do by a staff member before we took to the test to be certified. Love the place, the slide, the variances of climbing routes, but their rudeness was not appreciated. My friend and I went here with high hopes and much excitement after hearing the reviews, but the whole experience was terrible. I love this place for bouldering. I'm not an expert climber by any means, but I love that they have (super fun) problems for every skill level. The location is easy to get to from the Broadway stop on the Red Line and the gym is never too crowded. The staff is great and and prices here are generally pretty reasonable, even with gear. My friend and I took a belay class here and within an hour felt really confident with the technique taught here. Our instructor, Ben, was really attentive and he also helped us with our climbing. My friend and I also did an outdoor climbing session with another staff member, which was really fun. We learned crack climbing - pretty different from climbing at the gym, but a great experience. If you're looking to top rope, I would probably suggest going to Metro Rock in Everett, but Rock Spot is great for bouldering. Happy climbing! read more

The good: Tons of bouldering. Wide open spaces. Cool slide after you top out. When I was here, there was a nice little top-roping class exhibit. The staff are SUPER friendly and energetic, I loved that! 5/5 The bad: There's almost no top-roping at all. In terms of wall-climbing space, this place has probably 1/3 to 1/2 of what Brooklyn Boulders Somerville or MetroRock have. The ratings are set pretty high. 2/5 I think this place would be great for climbers who focus on bouldering, like me. But definitely not for top-ropers. Great spot for a casual workout by yourself or with a group. After you sign in at the front desk they have lockers to put your stuff away, you can either rent a lock for $2 or bring your own, We went after work, around 7, and I believe that is rush hour because there werent many lockers available. Once you are inside you get your shoes and they give you a quick lesson on how to use the suspensions and then its just you, on your own bringing out your inter mountaineer. Alot of the walls, if not all, allow you to hook, climb and discend on your own. The other half of the gym requires no suspension and once you climb over the wall you theres a slide! Lots of great bouldering with lots of roofs! The walls are really tall but the pads are good. The setting is very good and pretty well filled in up to V8, quite sparse above that. It's really nice to get so many roofs problems at low grade, it's usually quite rare to get those! They also have a few top ropes and auto belays, but I haven't climbed on those. The gym is right next to the Broadway T stop on the red line, just a few stops away from downtown, which is very convenient as well. On a side note, they actually have a lot of gear for sale as well, with a good selection of shoes, harnesses, chalk bags, ropes, rope bags, and a few carabiners and slings as well. In summary, a great new bouldering gym just a few minutes away from downtown! Awesome! Can't wait to climb there some more! read more

I really want to give this gym 5 stars. The staff are incredibly nice and the hours are great. However, the routes leave something to be desired. First, the top rope walls are relatively short. On the lower grades, the walls are so short, I would be comfortable free soloing and I'm meticulous about safety. It's basically just a few feet higher than other bouldering walls. The lead climbing is also a little dicey. The walls really only have four clips that are very close together, and more importantly, close to the ground. I would not be comfortable taking a whip. Finally, the bouldering. The routes have a strange set up. There are exceedingly long reaches (which becomes a dyno) for a v1/v2. I would recommend setting up lower grade routes so new climber can learn instead of doing crazy moves. Focus more on technique than long, impossible (for new people) reaches. The reaches are really discouraging when you first start out. You can train your body to be stronger at crimps and slopers when you're starting out, but for me, dynoing isn't the easiest thing to learn in the first couple of months. read more

Wow this is definitely my favorite climbing gym I've been to while on vacation! This review is only for the bouldering area, as I've only been once and just to boulder. This gym is about a half mile from the Broadway redline stop in Boston. A day pass with shoes cost me 20$ (this includes a 2$ college student ID discount). They have a pretty good size bouldering area. Their top rope seemed minimal, however, if you are into that sort of thing. The staff is nice, the routes are fun, but what sets this gym apart are all the innovative ideas going on in the bouldering areas. First off they seem to take a lot of feedbacks on the grading of the routes. All routes have a place for you to mark "easier," "accurate," or "harder." They even have a whole section where the routes are somewhat ungraded. They simply have a range of three possible grades and ask you to vote on them. I had a lot of fun climbing these and debating with myself what the grade should be. They also have something called the "Traverse Challenge" where you start from at one end of the gym and climb sideways along the walls, all the way around to the other end of the gym. While I didn't call over a staff member for an official try, I attempted the challenge on my own out of curiosity. I did not even get close, but it was extremely fun (and difficult)! This definitely would be a gym I would love to come back to for the traverse challenge and voting on route grades. read more

This place was a blast. Very professional staff, changing area, clean bathrooms, sturdy equipment, and lockers to store your treasures. Make sure you are reasonably strong relative to your body weight or else you're going to be in a world of horror. Saw several people bummin on the mats. Pro Tip- once you conquer the beginners area watch out! In the other parts of the gym don't attempt to flip yourself over the top of the wall or else they will need a crane and a rescue team to get you outta there. read more

I came here maybe twice in a span of 3 years, mainly it's cuz my body is physically not designed to lift this body off the ground due to gravity and cuz I am heavy so that's not Rock Spot's fault, it's all me. Their staff is super nice and I had to go up 3 times cuz the shoes didn't quite fit me. The prices are reasonable and I came with a few friends to try it out, I mean why not right, I love being fit *eye twitch*. You go in for the first time and you register and fill out waivers, etc,. Then you're all set to get geared up. They provide you with shoes and a changing room. There are cubicles to put your bags in. I like the design of this place but sometimes I think it's straight up impossible (for me) to do some of the harder ones because this body just don't roll that way. There's different difficulties marked with numbers and letters. The way it works is that you can only use the rocks marked the same color to climb, they also switch up the patterns once a while, too, so there's always that sense of novelty. I like coming here, but only when I don't care about what other people think of my body and how they judge me cuz you know, anxiety. read more

My friend wanted to go Rock climbing for her birthday. I called a couple of places to get information and Ben was so nice we decided to have her birthday here. We set time for a Saturday 2 hours for 10 ladies, $25 a person, gear, two staff, and a party room and party paper-goods included. Ben called me twice before the event to make sure everything was all set and to see if we had any ?s. When we got there Saturday Ben greeted us at the desk. He had to girls staffed to teach us how to use a equipment, answer questions, and of course take pictures! It was a great time. Staff has great, facility was clean. While bouldering around 3 weeks ago, I fell from the top of the wall, fractured my ankle and required surgery for the same. Yes, I did sign an insurance waiver claiming that I cannot hold rockspot responsible for my injury, however, I felt that the gym could be more equipped to handle medical emergencies. When I fell, I was offered an ice pack, however, there did not seem to be any staff personnel trained in basic first aid or even have the provision of a first aid kit. So here are a few things just to keep in mind during medical emergencies. 1) Having a first kid around maybe? In cases of fractures, where the bone fragments can cut through the skin, antiseptics are required to prevent infections. 2) Staff personnel trained in basic first aid. 3) splinting materials. Immobilisation is required, be it for a sprain or a fracture. read more

This is probably one of the few bouldering spots in Boston I've been to that's really pedestrian-accessible for those who don't want to have to drive (there's MetroRock in Everett, and Brooklyn Boulders in Somerville), which is a major plus. The drawback, on the other hand, is that it's not nearly as big as MetroRock or Brooklyn Boulders. There just isn't the same huge space, but that's not to say you won't get a workout here. The majority of the space is dedicated to bouldering, with a handful of belaying walls with a combo of auto-belays and the belays that require a partner. You'll see women and men alike, swinging around like Spiderman on a Costco pack of 5-hour-energy, ultra-stealth, let me tell you. I had only been bouldering once, and have probably negative upper body strength, if that's possible, so was a bit intimidated at first, but finally made it up the bouldering wall to slide down the slide (yes, there's a slide that's a) your incentive and b) your reward for making it up that wall). I don't think I had mustered the guts to go up until I saw a 10 year old do it. Ok...it was a 6 year old, but who's counting. While the location and space is great, I can't say the same for the orientation I got. He basically made me go up 5 feet on the auto-belay, jump down, and called it a day. Which left me not knowing how to do much else aside from putting on and taking off the auto-belay. Flash forward 20 minutes later, and as I'm coming down, my foot gets caught on the partner-belay rope next to me, I'm swinging upside down, and slamming into the wall. WOOPS, I guess he had forgotten to tell me to ensure your path up isn't remotely to the left or right of the auto-belay above you. Maybe that should've been intuitive, but also a critical point in orientation for someone who's never belayed before, I'd think. So in my mind, a total fail in ensuring safety here. And I have the scar on my side and a pretty roughed up ankle to prove it. There are also a ton of birthdays and kids here on the weekend, so there were a few times when kids would be running around as I belayed down, and I was afraid I'd knock them over as I landed. I'm all for kids having a blast and getting an intro to climbing at any age, but I just found it pretty annoying that I had to try to avoid knocking over children at the same time as trying to get a workout in. Weekdays are probably a lot more peaceful, so just an FYI if you're planning a weekend climb. Overall, a good rock climbing gym, but not without a few drawbacks that will most likely having me heading to other gyms instead. read more

My brother brought me here for my first climbing experience while I was visiting him last week. The staff were friendly as they explained the waiver and walked me through a brief orientation. Since I hadn't been climbing before, I was grateful to be able to rent climbing shoes. My brother belayed me through a few top rope routes, I tried the auto belay once, and then we tried several bouldering routes. It definitely helped that my brother, who has several years of climbing experience, coached me a bit; I'm not quite sure what it would have been like if I had gone on my own or with other inexperienced individuals! Really fun gym for bouldering. Walls are featured and routes change faces and enter/exit caves mid way. This is a totally different from experience from gyms with flat walls (especially BKB with its high gloss walls). Route setting is creative and fun (so far - only been twice) and grading feels fine. read more

In general, I think this is a super fun place to climb. I'd give it 5 stars for bouldering and 3 for top-rope climbing if I could rate them separately. Compared to other climbing gyms, I find the routes here much more creative. They aren't just "muscle your way to the top" routes, although there are a handful of those. I find that I have to think a lot more about how I'm going to tackle something and I like that. The grading seems mostly accurate and consistent, which is more than I can say for some of the other places around Boston. (I shall not name names...) The staff is helpful and friendly, which, again, is more than I can say for some other places. It's small, which isn't so much of an issue for bouldering, but the top-rope climbing really suffers. They do have a handful of fun routes in spite of that, but not much in the way of really challenging climbs. If you can make a 5.10, you'll quickly run out of options. One thing I'd like to see changed is more top-rope routes and fewer auto-belay routes. Adding a couple of more challenging (5.11 and up) top-rope climbs would be nice, too. Other than that, I'm pretty happy there and the price is reasonable. read more

Fun to come with a group because you're always encouraging one another and getting a great work out. Pros: -Free parking in a lot down the street, but there's seemingly a good amount of non-metered street parking outside. -They have changing rooms, a unisex bathroom, and single sex bathrooms as well -Also has a water bubbler -Staff were very nice Cons: -In comparison to other gyms (like Central Rock Gym in Worcester) it seems like Rock Spot is smaller and has lower climbs -Very cool that they have a slide/playground vibe in the corner of the beginner bouldering wall. However, almost every other time someone goes down the slide there is a loud metal clanging sound. I kept thinking someone was hurt! Something to get used to if you like climbing in that area. -Gets pretty crowded in the auto belay and beginner bouldering areas, which isn't helped by/may be due to the fact that the auto belays are so close together (and interspersed with traditional belays?). Something to be aware of because when people come down they can be slanted--I saw a few minor collisions (and almost collided with someone). EDIT: I agree with Ellie that people should be told to be more aware of not veering off of the path of the auto belay before dropping as this seems to cause more unpredictable trajectories. I started off with the auto belays, which I'd never used before, and I began feeling safe-ish after a few climbs. Definitely more of a learning curve than traditional belaying IMO. ROOKIE TIP: I don't suggest switching from auto belay to bouldering--do the opposite instead. I made the mistake of getting used to the security of the auto belay and then being all the more terrified of falling when I was bouldering (free-climbing). read more

A great place to go for bouldering enthusiasts and those who want to explore indoor rock climbing. I greatly appreciated the different kinds of setting, although most of the bouldering difficulty scales with reachy moves. Regardless plenty of overhangs, technical, and dynamic problems to explore! The gym is a bit on the smaller side but I haven't had any issues with overcrowding. The only downside is that the top roping is limited so I recommend going for the bouldering. Let me be clear -- I am not any sort of intense or frequent rock climbing gym goer, I just went to this place once and it was my first time ever in a rock climbing gym, so I have literally no basis for comparison. This review is only for people like me -- people who knew nothing about rock climbing but then watched Free Solo and decided that they urgently needed to go to a rock climbing gym and pretend to be Alex Honnold for a day. For people like that, this place is perfect. The front desk people were nice, they give you a brief and helpful walkthrough of how to climb safely, and then they answer any questions you have. I was worried you'd have to take some elaborate beginner classes your first time there, but you don't. It was a Sunday afternoon and it was busy but not crowded or anything. Facility is great and the routes are well-set. I like the fact that there were auto-belays but perhaps there are too many? Definitely a great place if you come alone. That being said, the customer service was the worse I've ever encountered at a climbing gym (I will note that I only interacted with one staff and given the many positive reviews, I'm sure that the others are fine). I came with several friends who are new to climbing and it was our first time to Rock Spot. We were given an orientation that was decent but definitely had some holes. The staff member explained some of the safety rules about bouldering but failed to demonstrate how to fall properly. I was surprised to say the least since most gyms have visitors practice a bouldering fall with supervision before clearing them. Later, when it was time for my belay test, I was absolutely astounded by how rude and patronizing the staff member was. I felt like he was trying to show-off his knowledge by asking me vague and repeating questions about the belay pre-check. I would answer his questions and then he would literally shake his head and then repeat exactly what I just said. At one point he said condescendingly, "Where did you learn how to belay?" I'm a fairly experienced climber and have taken countless belay tests, so this was a real slap in the face. I'm also a woman of color trying to encourage my friend, who is also a woman, to climb. I guess you could call me a climber....so when I am away from home I like to get some climbing in; thus, this review is based off of one experience climbing here and not the membership/yoga/etc... That being said, I had a GREAT climb session here. You can access it pretty easily from the Red line. It is a mostly bouldering gym, with a HUGE variety of routes. I went around 2PM on a weekday, and it was pretty empty (there seemed to be a camp going on but they weren't on the wall). I had to rent shoes, and unfortunately their rental shoes are not good...(they are the same ones that my climbing gym back home has though). I like the organization of the space as well. They have a real cool challenge that you can participate in at any time, and it is to get from one side of the bouldering rocks all the way around the gym without letting your feet touch the ground. If I were a local, I would totally love working on something like this during my climbs. They also have an entire wall of ungraded routes where you can vote for the grading yourself. I thought this was pretty awesome! A day pass + shoes with college ID is $20 which is decent. They have some workout equipment, most notably a slack line trainer. Instead of an introduction video, a staff member walks you through the safety which I feel like is a good idea because those videos get really corny and annoying. read more

Novice climber here, so excuse my lack of proper lingo. I've been wanting to get to one of the Boston area climbing gyms for a while now, so when a Yelp Fit Club event at Rock Spot popped up, I rose to the challenge! As many other reviewers noted, this is more of a bouldering gym with a limited availability of top roping. Of the top ropes routes, they were mostly auto-belays. I learned in my first visit that I prefer top roping, but as a beginner I had no problem keeping busy even with the limited options. TBQH, I might not have even tried bouldering had there not been a slide to zip down upon completion. Totally a motivator! I don't trust myself very much - I trust the auto-belay a helluva lot more! - so the thought of climbing up a wall without a harness or ropes definitely scared me. But where there is a slide, I (apparently) will climb! And despite what it may look like, the slide is super fast and fun :) All in all this was a great experience! Easy to get to by public transportation; clean, spacious and well-lit; helpful, friendly staff; all the amenities you need in a gym. Two callused thumbs up! Also, it's on ClassPass so I'll definitely be back - yay! read more
