Rockefeller Center is located at the center of Midtown Manhattan in New York City. For a lot of Americans, it's best known as the home of NBC and the Today Show, 30 Rock (sitcom), Radio City Music Hall, the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree, and the Rink at Rockefeller Center (ice skating rink). The best thing I like about it is it's home to the Nintendo World Store which opened next door to the Today Show studios on May 14, 2005. Rockefeller Center is packed with tourists and deservedly so. There's a lot to see and do. Not only that, but it borders Fifth Avenue (high-end shopping street) and is within walking distance of Times Square and Central Park. If you count Rockefeller Plaza as a street, Rockefeller Center takes up six city blocks. The ground level and concourse level (below ground) are mostly open to the public. They consist primarily of retail shops and restaurants such as Brooks Brothers, Del Frisco's Grille, Anthropologie, Banana Republic, Papyrus, J.Crew, Tumi, Lego, Coach, Michael Kors, and Ann Taylor. Christie's art business and auction house is also located here. I love the Art Deco style of the whole complex. If you don't want to wait in line to go to the top of the Empire State Building, go to the Top of the Rock instead. A lot of people think the Empire State Building is overrated anyway. There's an observation deck on the top of Rockefeller Center (70 floors high) with three viewing platforms that give you an amazing 360-degree view of the Manhattan skyline, Hudson and East Rivers, and beyond. The entrance for Top of the Rock is on 50th Street between 5th and 6th Avenues. Top of the Rock tickets are $30 for adults, $28 for seniors, and $24 for children aged 6-12 years. The observation deck is open daily from 8am to midnight with the last elevator going up at 11pm. Studio 1A, where the Today Show is broadcast, is located on the corner of W 49th and Rockefeller Plaza. Show up early and get on TV. Broadcasts begin at 6am. Across 49th from Studio 1A is the NBC Experience store. Fans of the Today Show and other NBC shows like the Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, Late Night with Seth Meyers, and Saturday Night Live will get a hoot out of this place. Here you can get your NBC peacock plushies, photos with cardboard cutouts of Matt Lauer, Al Roker, Natalie Morales, and Savannah Guthrie, and purchase additional various merchandise (T-shirts, coffee mugs, miscellaneous gifts, etc.) related to NBC and its popular shows. As a Native New Yorker, the long bitter arctic cold months are longer than the Spring/Summer months. Rockefeller Center is an underground of shops, finds, including an outdoor ice skating rink, home to the famous Rockefeller Center annual decorated Christmas tree and lighted angels. It is similar to Montréal, Canada's underground of shops. Respective international countries flags welcome visitors and home to Top of the Rock. I rate Rockefeller Center four stars due to lack of ample lighting as it makes it very dark and cold. Totally a tourist trap, crowded, over rated, over priced, and extremely commerialized. read more

It was a a nice tour. Our tour guide, Jonathan? Was pretty knowledgeable. The tour was a nice walk around the studio, good cardio and I think the headset was perfect. I did a different type of tour in New Jersey and I could not hear the tour guide. At Rockefeller, they gave us headsets that are tuned in to the speakers channel and I could hear perfectly even if I straggled behind or lingered at a spot and stayed behind. The tour gave us immediate access to the observation deck without waiting in line. That was quite a view. A nice stop for our first NY trip. read more

For folks who have already been to the Statue of Liberty, the Top of the Rock should be a second destination. The view is spectacular, but you can't really beat the historical significance of a landmark such as the statue. On the positive side, I found the line here to be shorter than that of the statue. It's fairly straightforward. You go down to the lower floor to buy tickets. They offer a AAA discount so be sure to ask for that. With tickets in hand, go to the main floor to take the elevator. It's a split ride to the top so you'll be there before you know it. The winds can get crazy so make sure you keep things like hats secure. You have to take pictures too but the pane of glass all around. And I'm sure you all know about the obligatory picture-taking part of these things. You can buy your photo from the gift shop if you're interested. read more

I had to hunt around a bit for the statue of Atlas that shows up in the credits, but there it was and now it's here and on Facebook. Over one of the entrances to the building, "Wisdom and Knowledge Shall Be the Stability of Thy Times", which I now know is from the New Testament Book of Isaiah. Major and massive crowds all year long. Tourists, tourists, tourists. Oh, wait. That's me. I didn't do the Top of the Rock tour, only because it was an overcast day. Maybe next time! read more

The top of the rock gives you great views of the city, especially if you want Empire building in your picture. The top is not as crowded as the Empire building. But the viewing deck is not as tall. They will give you a specific time to get in, and won't allow you to get in the line before that time, so plan accordingly. There are two floors have a view deck, the top one is way less crowded, somehow most people spend the majority of the time at the low level. Overall, it's a wonderful place to look over the city. The wife always asked where the skating rink is that they show on TV at Christmas time so I decided to take her there. Surprise, during the summer it's an outdoor cafe. And even more surprise is that there is a whole city underground with shops and restaurants. We did not go to the top of theRock because we had already gone to the top of Empire State building so it seemed redundant. But the center itself is a great place to hang out in the shade and people watch. It's a stone's throw to NBC studio and they offer tours, but you have to plan in advance because they sell out weeks in advance, so we missed out. read more

Historical and beautiful, Rockefeller Center represents New York City at its best. It symbolizes culture, tradition, business, and history. While waking around the area, you see sculptures, artwork, and awesome shops. Across the street, one can visit the famous St. Patrick's cathedral. Take time to meditate on the beautiful architecture in the church. As a native New Yorker, I still can not get enough of this place especially during the Christmas season. People go skating in the ice skating rink. The Christmas tree brings people from all across the board together. Saks Fifth Ave across the street holds a beautiful light show accompanied by music. The ice rink. The flags. The statue of Prometheus. Seen them numerous times, but only recently experienced the observation deck. TICKETS: We didn't pre-purchase our tickets, but they were widely available since we chose an evening time slot in nippy November. We paid about $30 for adult tickets. Pricey but worth it. THE CONCOURSE: Who knew this thing even existed behind the ice rink. I didn't! It's full of shops, restaurants, small eateries, and tables that have a great view of the ice rink. 30 ROCK: After entering, you're able to pose for pictures-for-purchase. You sit on a beam with a backdrop of the NYC skyline as if you're an iron worker. So not my thing. My spouse forced me to pose against my will. I hate doing things like this because I knew we weren't going to purchase a cheesy, over-priced picture that'll sit in storage collecting dust anyway. TOP OF THE ROCK: After the picture travesty, it was a quick elevator ride up to the observation decks. Floor 67 has an enclosed room with tall and narrow viewing windows that is 2 floors high. Floor 69 is where the main observation deck is, complete with benches, binocular viewing machines, and protective glass panels. There are spaces in between the glass panels that are wide enough to give small cameras and phones a clear shot of the views without having to shoot through the reflective glass. Floor 70 is the highest you can go. It's a smaller area that is set back on all sides from main deck 69, and is totally unobstructed from glass panels, giving the best views possible. Needless to say, the views are AMAZING being that the building is in Midtown, with killer views of Central Park, the Empire State Building, and south all the way down to Tribeca. Time inside is unlimited. OVERALL: Crowded but a must-do. read more

In the movie Ghostbusters, the character Egon walked into a Central Park West gem of an apartment building and said, Art Deco, very nice. When I walk through Rockefeller Center, I say that about 100 times. This mid-century, mid-town gem is one eye opening treat after another. The thing about Art Deco that makes me smile is that utilitarian things like banisters and mail boxes, light fixtures and door jams serve two masters. They work as building features and, more important, they are beautiful. Enter 30Rock, the tallest building in the center of the center, and be prepared to be awed. Look up (the rule for anyone visiting The Big Apple) and you will see heroic WPA era paintings of people working, well, heroically. They appear throughout the first floor and are must-see TV (sorry...) Study the details. Look at shiny things. Look up. Look down (the brass framed terrazzo is beautiful) - be the hunter. Take pictures! There are shops on the lower level - prices reflected in the location. Of course there are clean restrooms, worth noting! They are off to the side of the skating rink... Look for the signs. There is a Starbucks nearby too (no surprise) as well as a fancy (read, expensive) restaurant. I have not tried it but other Yelpers gave. Search away... Along the main canyon, there are tony shops that sell Legos, chocolate, exotic toiletries, and pricy but stylish clothing. Pop in just to see how the other half lives or pull out the plastic if something special catches your eye. You know you're worth it! At the front desk of 30Rock, they have maps of the facility. I urge you to grab one so you don't miss a thing. Finally, the Top of the Rock is the observation platform on the top deck of the building. You get a fantastic view of the City from there but it's not a cheap ticket and the lines can be long. Rockefeller Center... Very nice! read more

We came here to visit the Top of the Rock and there was a long line to buy tickets. It was before sunset so perfect timing on our part. One adult ticket was $32 as of 2/20/16 and the time frame of the ticket was when we were able to go to the Top of the Rock. You couldn't go before the time on the ticket but not a big deal. We waited near the Starbucks that was inside of the Rockefeller Center for about five or ten minutes before we walked to the elevators for the Top of the Rock. The elevator up to the 67th floor had a clear top so you could see inside of the elevator shaft. If it wasn't a clear top then it sure looked cool while going up. It was pretty crowded at the top which was expected especially when the sun was setting. They had a gift store up there as well. Outside of the Rockefeller Center was an ice rink which was only there during the winter time. It looked great at night with all the flags twirling in the wind. Of all my trips to Manhattan it wasn't until last holiday season 2015, that I actually went to see the herald Christmas Tree at Rockefeller Center. It was beautiful indeed. And being the week before Christmas my friends and I were able to marvel at it and the skating rink leisurely and comfortably. I returned a week later on Christmas Eve with my family and the crowd was overwhelming! I persevered for my mom because it was her first time. She was blown away making the fight through the crowd totally worth it. She said she'd never forget it. This is one of those NYC iconic institutions that you must experience at least once in your lifetime especially to see the skating rink which in the movies looks enormous but in reality is stunningly small. read more

Another tourist location just like Times Square, you can go to the top of the rock like Empire State, and there are plenty of high-end stores here due to Fifth Avenue and just stores around the open sub-level that holds a restaurant in the summer and an ice rink in the winter. You can reserve the entire rink if you want. Parking along the street is a pain, so come by foot to the area. One part I love - the Christmas tree going up and being lit up every year. Massive, absolutely massive trees oftentimes. There's a forest of shops in the mall underground, too, not always a lot of people down there. NBC also has a studio here, I think. read more

While on vacation took yet another trip to Rockefeller..never gets old. Not as grand as during the Christmas Season, but the ice rink (it being March already!) was still in full swing and it was fun to watch the skaters on the ice. We managed to kill 40 mins watching a very talented girl skate and do some advanced moves, and a poor man that couldnt even manage to stay on two feet. She better give him some lessons. Great place to really get the vibe of NyC and do one of my favourite pastimes - people watch! You can go up the Top of the Rock ($32 for adults) to get an amazing view of the city. Way better than the Empire State building. There can be long lines but you will be told approximate wait times to go up. It's also a pretty efficient system and they don't allow hoards of people up at the same time - this way you can actually see the views - you're not up there waiting in a crowd. Obviously people want to go up for sunset or the night view so expect busier times than normal. Or you can just chill ground level and sit outside and enjoy a bite to eat in front of the golden statue in the summer or enjoy ice skating and hot chocolate in the winter. I've done both and each time it's been fun - crowded but fun. In the summer there is plenty of seating - tons of shaded tables/chairs to grab a drink/bite to eat. read more

This is such a fun area of New York. It is beautiful. The sights here are definitely not something to be missed. Great to visit any time of the year. There is much shopping around the area, as well as restaurants! It is always nice to get a coffee and just sit around and hang out. Good area for people watching! Bustling! We came here around 7:00p on a cold January evening and the place was absolutely bustling with ice skaters, tourists, couples strolling, children and presence of NYPD police. I finally saw what I was only able to see on television, the world-famous ice rink in the heart of Rockefeller Center. Loved the flags from all over the world blowing in the wind, the gold color architecture in the rink... all the lights and the atmosphere around! Looked like everyone was having fun! We walked around the corner and saw where the Radio City Music Hall was located, wished we had time to attend a performance. I would've loved to wander, explore and take a walk on the underground complex of retailers and stores and window shop or take a quick bite at many fine dining options but it would have to be another time and another review. Iconic place in New York City, located just a stones throw away from Radio City music hall. You can rent skates and ice-skate at the beautiful rink. Or, just people watch. It's touristy but it's a must see when visiting NYC. Right around the corner is the Top of the Rock, which I feel has a better birds eye view of the City over The Empire State Building. If you're a fan of Elf or the Office then you have to visit to see the plaza where they have the ice rink and Christmas tree. In the summer the plaza has vendors and seating. But still impressive to see the flags. Tickets to the Top of the Rock offer views from the 70th floor. Regular tickets are $38 but we paid for the $85 VIP tickets because (1) we went on Saturday and it was crowded (2) you can go anytime not a specific time (3) you go to the front of the line going up and (4) you go to the front of the line going down. These can be important on a busy Saturday if you're trying to cram things into your schedule. read more

Come here during Christmas time!! It's beautiful! I've been coming here every year for the past 7 years. My friends and I all live/lived in different parts of the country but during Christmas season- we made it a tradition to meet up and come here to see the tree. Christmas is my favorite holiday and everything here just looks so magical. They have an ice rink so people can skate but personally I've never skated here due to the line. It looks really fun but I don't have the patience to wait in line in the cold. Also saks has beautiful light shows every year. The first one i saw was the one with the snowflakes in tune with carol of the bells. The one I saw most recent was soooo beautiful. It was a castle lighting up and changing colors in sync to a music. After seeing Rockefeller Center on TV for years, I felt like a kid in a candy shop seeing it in real life. As soon as you get there, you can feel the magnetic energy buzzing around you. Such a beautiful, historic part of New York that you must see. We were wandering around NY when we stopped here and it was more then we could have imagined. The entire area is so picturesque. Tall buildings surrounding this square with so much to offer! It seems like a little oasis in the middle of the hustle and bustle. I haven't been during winter but I can only imagine how great it would be to come here and enjoy the skating rink. I wish I had more to say but words don't do it justice. read more

Rockefeller Center is a super awesome place to visit! I didn't realize how big it is, but it actually consists of 19 buildings that cover 22 acres (yes, I looked that up). My cousin and I had a great time just walking around and checking everything out. There is beautiful public art and greenery all throughout, so it's a great spot to walk. The gardens are really gorgeous. There's plenty of shopping and dining, but we spent our visit walking around and visiting the Top of the Rock observation deck to take in the awesome views of the city. I definitely recommend going to the top! If you're visiting New York, you've got to check out Rockefeller Center! read more

Alright, its a touristy thing to do. So what? Its NYC - a touristy place to visit! That being said, you pay to get up to the Top, walk around and take in some solid views, probably take way to many pictures, then head down. Take it in then cross it off your bucket list. I will give it credit for better views than the Empire State Building and have to admit the Christmas Tree looks pretty impressive on TV. Rockefeller was absolutely beautiful during the holiday season. During the day and during the night, there are plenty of photo-worthy decorations on display. While of course the huge Christmas tree lit up at night is the main attraction, I found the giant Christmas balls and Christmas lights displays to be two of my favorite parts. Stop by and watch the Saks' Christmas lights show but be warned, the crowd is as thick as molasses in winter and many people seem completely void of any knowledge regarding how to move effectively in a crowded space. People headed every direction on both sides of the same side walk made it unnecessarily slow. There was a large police presence and I never felt unsafe, but I would recommend keeping phones and wallets in your front pockets or zipped up in a coat. There are plenty of local eateries around and an ice skating rink. Unless you have plenty of time on your hand, I would recommend skating at one of the numerous other rinks around the city and just take in the sights at Rockefeller. It's a picturesque view from the entrance of Channel Gardens. My review was based on my experience during the holiday season, but with the food joints, beautiful architecture, and it being the home to the filming of SNL, there's always something to see at Rockefeller Center. read more

We always brave the maddening tourist crowds and the biting cold just to enjoy the sight of the tree for at least a few minutes. The ultimate place for people watching! Rockefeller Center is definitely one of the "must do/ must see" places if ever visiting NYC. On a very brief and recent visit, I realized that the tree wasn't as big or as fancy as I always imagined it to be. But then again it was daytime. Went here for the Christmas tree and it was so cool to see and the Sax Fifth building is around there too with the light show. The crowds were insane and I know they get even crazier the closer it gets to the holidays so I suggest trying to go on weekdays to see if it's less crowded but it is obviously a New York must do in the winter. read more

I was here for the annual visit to see the huge Christmas Tree that they set up each and every year and since this was a Sunday night visit, the crowds while of considerable volume, were not as insane as they might be found on a Friday or Saturday evening or a day closer to Christmas Day. The setup was a little tricky since they were only letting people enter on Fifth Avenue and since Sak's was doing some sort of video display on their facade it was piling up as tourists and the like needed to stop and record this on their mobile phones. After some slow shuffling you made your way into the lengthy outdoor corridor that brings you right to the ice skating rink and the always beautiful Christmas Tree. Suddenly the waiting and chaos didn't matter for me as it was time to take photos. I get a larger appreciation for NYC when I see this tree and the multitudes that it brings into its area and I even made sure that I snapped some photos for the people that asked me if I wouldn't mind helping them secure that special moment. Perhaps this is not a true Yelp based on this being for the holiday attraction but if you are a resident of the city make sure you get here at least for a hot minute to take a photo and if you are visiting us from anywhere you know that your Facebook and Instagram feed is not going to be the same without this visual added to the mix.
