Date night at Rockin J'd Piano Bar was nice but with a twist. The hubs and I expected lively and interactive piano bar vibes. It was not because the piano bar was performing sub-optimally but because they were not there at all. Apparently, the lead band member was sick and therefore, the band did not perform this evening. While it was disappointing, when life gives you lemon make lemonade. The hubs and I decided to stay and catch up on each other's week. It was great to have that dedicated time and in a quiet environment. The mixologist was great and Texas friendly. This was my first time visiting this venue. Service at the bar was great. I had an apple martini which was okay, and then Deep Eddy Peach vodka and soda which was much better. The piano player was fun and took requests. All of the customers I spoke to were very friendly, and there seems to be a group of regulars. It was a fun evening, and I will be back. read more

There isn't much like late night drinks with family and friends. However why stop at just suds and buds? Add in some live music and watch the night liven up like a kid on Christmas! I had the opportunity to hit Rocking J Piano Bar and what a night it was! Rocking J is easy to find off the 183 and parking is plentiful, unlike the horrendous parking adventure downtown. The joint is located in a corner unit off Whitestone Blvd and extremely inviting. Music starts a little later at night and if you want a table you need to reserve one. I arrived at 7pm for the 8pm show and there were a few patrons upon arrival. The joint is clean without that beer-stained floor smell and the bartenders are cool and fast slinging suds. Prices aren't bad and all the people that I met were extremely cool, many different ethnicities were hanging out, while the age group was 30+ so it's not the college crowd. The attire ranged from men in tshirts, flip flops, I saw some "typical cowboy hats" and women in shorts and dresses, up to business casual. It's basically a "come as you are" mentality in a very relaxed atmosphere. Please note while they don't serve food, they do allow outside grub, just bring some for everyone, Also the bathrooms are decent not spectacular however you won't need to run down the street. The non-reserved tables are limited and as the show time creeps closer, they start to fill up but there was standing room. The crowd that was there was a pretty lively crew and seemed like pretty decent people. In the corner is a piano and on my night a drum kit. I can't remember the pianist / singer's name but he was really good while the drummer acted as backup, basically enhancing the songs with a steady beat. The guy could flat out sing and I swear I couldn't stump him with my diverse requests. Among the songs were The Cure - Love Song, Alice in Chains - The Rooster, Jimmy Buffet - Margaritaville, Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here. Perhaps the jingle from Sesame Street would have stumped him, but I didn't consider it at the time. Overall, the place feels safe with "good folk" who all just want to have a good time. I should have taken a pic while there but I did enjoy my second visit here. The musicians had the place rockin! I like that it's not a huge place so it's a little more intimate. It was one of those late nights in the suburbs and the pickings were slim. Basically, the majority of places were closed at midnight at the lastest and Rockin' J was like the only option available and because of that I wasn't expecting much. For place that advertised itself as a piano bar, there was no piano playing. When we got to the bar and asked about it the bartender mentioned that the musicians had taken off already-it was a slow night so that made sense but was still a little disappointing. However, our bartender was friendly and to be honest we weren't really there to listen to music, just for drinks. Their whiskey selection had a lot of local distilleries and I decided to get a Balcones neat. By the time I had finished it was last call-but definitely worth another visit. read more

I was looking for a good hangout place that stays open until late. I really liked the place. The music was quite good but I felt it was little loud. The drinks were good and not pricy. So I like this place back in the day but recently if you don't pay 20-30 bucks a song they won't play your song and you still are paying them... to not play the song. One time we were the first people to put a request in and it kept getting skipped because someone else kept tipping more than us. So they get your money and never play your song. Somehow we ended up at this place after a concert and it didn't disappoint. You know how those evenings go. You just let the night take you where it wants to take you. Everyone was friendly and having a good time. The bartenders were great and so was the music! People were singing along having a good ole time! Vibes were so good. Went on a birthday weekend trip and we're trying to find bars near us. Definelty an older crowd but we were in the 21-23 age range and still had so much fun. I have to say this place is great - found a few old friends, and the staff (Lindsey/Jenna) were perfect. They look familiar but I was eaten by Jaws so I forget where. All joking aside, give it a go - nice place, great service, and supporting your local businesses never goes out of style. read more

Great happy hour til 7 with $2.50 Domestics. The piano is rocking on Thursday Friday And Saturday nights. Good idea to make a reservation for those nights. Make sure you arrive before the piano starts because they can only hold the reservation until then. Plenty of people wanting to get in and they don't want empty seats. It's a great bar and a great time. Really good for a date night or a girls night. And guys there are typically more women here than men so you might want to swing by as well. read more

I was invited to a birthday celebration at Rockin J's last night and was beyond impressed with the entertainment, service and atmosphere at this new bar. Everyone from the bar staff, the bouncer, and even the great guys that cleans up the mess when a glass got broken, were amazingly attentive and amiable. The owner was so accommodating and friendly, you could tell that he truly cared about the patrons. I cannot begin to tell you how talented the guys performing last night were, starting with the pre show. This guy had the voice of Chris Stapleton.
