Friendly people, suggested a better route due to low water levels. However, don't rent the black rubber inner tubes with bottoms- they will burn you if the weather is hot & sunny no matter how many times you splash water on it. I have first degree burns on my inner arms. They also have large nozzles on them. This is referring to the Liberty Street location. They have newer tubes with no bottoms but none with mesh bottoms. Absolute madness. There's no parking anywhere in this place. If you come at noon, that's it you are done. We were driving around looking for parking. Once you get over the parking you will pay 2 dollars for the floating. Idk how much is the rental as I got a 12 dollar float so please research on the rental. You are allowed to bring your own buzz and music so make sure to be prepared . You can also smoke while floating. So if you can get over the parking issues you should be fine. All I say is be prepared and bring all the gear you can for fun. Also come in early so you don't have parking issues, if you do, look for some back streets that have no parking regulation ... they are a bit far bit a great choice in case you can't find. I love this place-I go here whenever I go tubing, but today they really helped out. I was going tubing with a friend who had never been, and I asked about string (normally they have it), for linking our tubes together. Here, I should mention that we are both Deaf so we use our hands to talk :D They said they had it down the ramp. I asked at the ramp, and they said they had it at the bus. I asked at the bus when we arrived, and she said they aren't allowed to have any. I was like !!! because how were we supposed to keep a third tube AND us together? So we moved our stuff and gave up the third tube, and she said she would refund us because of the misunderstandings. The driver also returned our cooler to the store and kept it safe for us. To start off we paid a $10 parking fee, which is completely fine I understand it is a heavily visited area. However once we got to the river area to see how it looked a employee told us to leave because it was a "private property" and we had to go elsewhere. I said how come there are so many people??? She said "idk." I think that was unprofessional and disrespectful in her part. I tried to rent tubes for me and my family to be able to float the river after this incident happened from this same company and they said if we knew how to swim of course we were honest and said no. Let me explain why I wouldn't recommend this place. Girls upfront are definitely a joy, friendly and professional. Their bus driver Jack, however, is a nightmare. He got there 53 minutes late, looking hungover from the night before, and playing very filthy music super loud, even though there were about 8 little kids on the bus. This was our first time floating the Comal river and I am so glad we decided to use Rockin 'R' because the experience was AMAZING! There was no parking available on site but their website directed us to a parking lot a few miles away and the bus shuttled us back to the outfitter. Once there we rented our tubes and hopped on another bus that took us several blocks to the river. We floated on a Saturday and there were people EVERYWHERE but it was great! We have an annual river trip usually first weekend in June. This is my 4th year to go and I look forward to it every year! Here are some fail proof tips to go by to ensure an awesome tubing experience. 1. Rent a tube (I suggest buy one at an area Academy or Wal-Mart for the same cost as renting one). That way you have it for furture use & it is a nicer tube. 2. Buy a case of beer and a 16-quart Igloo cooler. 3. Get a tube for the cooler (or get one of those sweet inflatable kind) and some rope or bungees to tie up tubes and coolers. 4. Do not bring anything on the river that you care about losing. 5. Bring a drybag or waterproof box (found in the camping isle at Wal-Mart). 6. Sunscreen...enough said. 7. No glass or styrofoam is allowed on the river. Neither are those little jello shot cups. 8. First off, I tap out, you win Comal river. Our group got owned. I brought 2 credit cards, an ID, and my sandals. The Comal now owns my sandals. My friends on the other hand lost, credit cards, IDs, cash, money clip, shirts, and shoes. Granted I blame them for their own stupidity. But I must warn you the river is mostly calm, but there are drops that are FAST, and when I mean fast the current literally will pull you and flip you over if you aren't careful. Just bring the bare essentials with you. As far as the river itself, it was a blast! It was a little lower than normal but still high enough to float and have some drinks. The water was cool but not freezing cold. There are lots of cops along the sides to make sure people don't have the wrong stuff. This can be a huge hassle if you don't know the laws. But if you do this is a plus since they are keeping a lot of the litter out of the river. My only complaint are the scuba divers. Yes I said it right, scuba divers in 2 feet of water? You guys are NO scuba Steve. Complete @ssholes swimming around with scissors, cutting the rope holding your tubes together and looking for lost treasure. I wanted to hit these guys so bad! This is a fantastic tubing river and you get to bring your own beer along with being able to rent an ice chest with its own tube. There are usually lots of people out on the river and everybody is having a great time. They have a LOT of law enforcement both in boats and out on the banks of the river so if you get out of the water and try to go onto the land to urinate or anything else they will arrest you ASAP so just stay in the water! They also have ever changing rules about what you can and can't have and what they will give you littering tickets for so make sure to check for the most recent info. If you just kick back and relax this is one of the most enjoyable things around. The most recent rule change has made this drop from a 5 Star experience to a three star in that they have banned aluminum cans and large ice chests so that now the only way you can transport beer is in some sort of reusable cooler or other container. Apparently you CAN still bring a keg which is great considering their ideas on "reusable" containers and small ice chests don't give me enough beer for the journey. Have been tubing with Rockin R twice and enjoyed both times. Make sure you find a coupon online to use during a weekday or Sunday for 10% off your rental ($15 with a bottom, $12 without). Park for free across the street at the parking lot or in the grass and walk over to rent/pay/sign forms. The front desk will hold car keys for you so you don't have to worry about bringing them on the river. Don't bring disposable things (cans, bottles) onto the river; sport drink bottles only. You can bring a cooler (bring some fried chicken to munch on while you tube...it seems crazy but it's amazingly good while floating down a river!) and keep it with you in your tube if you get a bottomed one or float it along in another tube alongside you. Once you're all ready, head over to the storage area next to the office, present your ticket stub, and have your tubes loaded into their shuttle (an old school bus). A driver will drive you down to the river where you can hop in. They also give you a piece of twine to tie your flipflops to your tube for the ride. I'd suggest getting into the river closer to the chute so you don't have to spend a long time floating/paddling all the way there in the hot sun. The float on the Comal took about 1.5 hrs and it was going average speed (it had rained the day before a little bit so the level was fine - this was June 2013). Exit once you see the painted mural for Rockin R and there will be employees waiting for you with the shuttle again. Super convenient and not crowded at all on the bus back! read more

This place was just okay. The quality of the equipment was poor. We rented tubes with bottom protectors, which was recommended if you have a cooler. We were given an old school black inner tube with a piece of plastic sort of attached to the bottom (mine was missing an attachment, which acted to slow me down on the river). The tubes were uncomfortable when you are floating for a couple of hours. The staff were not pleased that I didn't have car keys to hand over as collateral (my phone acts as a key for my car). They explained that they needed something in exchange so I wouldn't walk off with their equipment. Really, are people stealing these tubes? My car is needed as collateral? They have my CC info on file, shouldn't that be enough? When we got dropped off at the starting point, I asked the driver where the pickup would be. He was like, "didn't the front desk give you any directions?". No, they didn't. I would probably try a different company with newer equipment. read more

I have to take off one star and I'll tell you why. It started off as a five star because of the gentleman who was working with a teen where the loading area is. We had packed a lunch and asked if we could sit at the picnic table to eat. Without asking he promptly set up an umbrella for us so that we would be under a shade. But he set the mood right at the beginning of the day by greeting us with a warm welcome when we arrived and even helped us park in front of the garage. In the earlier part of the day the teens driving the van were courteous and set up the stool outside of the van door to hop on and took the tubes from us and loaded it into the trailer but around mid afternoon, I don't know if it was because he was tired but at pickup, he didn't set up the stool and we had to load the tubes onto the trailer ourselves. He didn't communicate with us one bit. It was obvious that he didn't want to be there. I'm unsure if it was the same teen who was driving in the earlier part of the day. Had so much fun coming to the river! We decided coming to Rockin' R, because it was recommended by a friend. The facility it self has plenty of bathrooms, and showers, which is a major plus. It also has a gift shop with all the last minute necessities one tends to forget to bring. The parking is 10 dollars, but 5 are returned with your purchase of a tube. The river unfortunately was very low when we went, so I suggest getting tubes with bottoms instead of the bottomless ones. Swim shoes are definitely a must, because of all the slippery rocks! There were no rapids, but we still had a good time floating the river. I don't suggest bringing your phone, I personally had water damage in mine and since have had to get it replaced, sighhh. So with that said, I don't suggest you bringing anything you wouldn't mind losing! We opted for the 6 hour ride, which has less restrictions than the 3 hour ride. You're able to bring your own food, beer (in cans), and beverages. The 3 hour ride allows, no alcohol, no food that is not in containers. Definitely do the 6 hour float if you have the chance. UPDATE: This 2010 review was originally made for the Comal River in New Braunfels, TX. I have not used Comal River Tubing (I'm a local and I don't tube) however for some reason the name (Comal River) of my original review has changed to this business. Onto the review... I'm a 50 year old 3 year local to New Braunfels and native Texan and immediately fell in love with the Comal River and its gorgeous crystal clear, CLEAN, emerald water. I love it so much that I volunteer to pick up a large portion of the empty beer cans at the bottom of the Comal up to the last public exit just using goggles, snorkel and swim fins. Started doing this in the summer of 2009 picking up close to 200 pounds so far. I give the cans to an 87 year old WWII vet who recycles them for pennies per lb to help with living expenses for both he and his wife facing health issues. You won't believe how many valuables I've picked up from the bottom so keep that in mind when tubing. I currently have about 30 cheap sunglasses. I don't know what to do with them. I make an attempt to return drivers licenses. I've come across about 4 so far and have mailed them back to their owners. Some of us river rats aren't all that bad. Warning about the two chutes. The first one has a very strong current once exiting onto the river. The angle it shoots you out can potentially throw you against the concrete wall on the opposite side of the river if you happen to fall out of your tube. Don't fight the current if this happens. Roll with it and keep your feet forward if you do happen to head toward the side wall which is rare. I haven't yet seen anyone get injured or drowned, but then I only spend about 3 hours a day on weekdays cleaning up the river. There is a second shallow spill over dam just down from the first chute but before the second. This one can be trouble when going over with your tube because of its back current where you might get stuck. If you get out of the tube to swim out of this know that the center section of the dam has a small deep hole right up against the wall of the dam. I've stuck my foot going over it snorkeling during last year's drought when the river was low and I couldn't find bottom. Even a San Marcos Scuba association web blog stated some scuba divers have been caught up and struggled to get out of this. The second chute is pretty shallow with large limestone rocks at the opening jutting up from the bottom with about two feet clearance from underneath the surface of the water. The rapids are created by shallow water over a flat limestone floor about 15 feet downstream then continues on to deeper water with the same rocky bottom with about 5 feet clearance. The current creates a wide whirlpool like back current formation spanning the entire width of the river forming on the right of the chute rapids causing quite a few tubes to go in circles or stay in one place in the center of this gently flowing whirlpool. You have to cycle around to get back into the original chute current to get you going forward. I think this is the coolest river I've ever seen. No alligators or any creature with large teeth exist. I've checked. There's turtles the size of a man's head, some pretty good size blue gray catfish and black bass, and quite a few crayfish that hide in empty beer cans and river grass at the bottom. The deepest portions are around 15 feet usually around turns and bends in the river. When snorkeling the Comal it's like one big bluegreen aquarium, just beautiful! Tubing the Comal in New Braunfels is a blast! Here's the scene and a basic 'how to': Hundreds of people of all ages and backgrounds in tubes, pulling coolers of can beer, tubing about 1mph down a 3mile river. Some tubes have music. Some tubes have dogs. Some tubes are connected to many others. Some tube solo. All tubes have cheap, low-key, Texana fun. Living in fundy Texas as long as I have (20+) years, it still amazes me the level of tolerance New Bruanfels and NBPD have for the river shenanigans. There are really only a few rules which will get you in trouble: No glass. No huge cooler. No foam, bongs, or jello shots cups (litter). No jumping off bridges. No getting out of the river and pooping in someone's yards. Other than that, knock yourself out. Rent a tube (I suggest you buy one at an area Academy or Walmart for the same cost as renting one). Buy a case of beer and a 16quart Igloo cooler. Get a tube for the cooler (or get one of those sweet inflatable kind) and some rope or bungees to tie up tubes and coolers. Buy a $5 bus pass back to your car and lather up with SPF 5million. That's about as complicated as it gets. Jump in, tube fast or slow, stop on the banks if you want, or not. You could easily tube the river twice in one day, three times if you really tried. I recommend an AM trip, grab lunch, and do it again when the sun starts to set. Optional things would be a water-proof 'dry bag' or dry box for smokes and keys. Water-proof iPod speakers. Inflatable coolers. Snorkle because there are fish and pretty rocks. Shoes of any kind (I've seen 'river shoes', running shoes, cowboy boots) because some rocks are sharp and the pavement when you get out is Surface of the Sun hot. An oar (one is enough) to move you toward the chutes and out of the low-hanging trees. Note: Please please please pay attention to the signs that point you toward the tube chutes and for the Love of God hold onto your valuables when you go down. There are river rats (low life humans that should drown like rats) that snorkle the bottom of the chutes and pick up tons of cameras, keys, sunglasses, etc. My advice is to take nothing into the water that would cause you a second thought if you got out without it. And piss upstream from them so they get a snorkle full. The Comal is both adult- and kid-friendly. If you find yourself too near a rowdy group, move away. There are NBPD that patrol the water looking mostly for glass. read more

What Rockin R has that other tube rentals don't is their own exit dock. Perhaps that's why their rental prices are higher. Everyone else has to exit the river at the same dock a little further down, which gets crowded and crazy. On the other hand, if you want a tube with a bottom, Rockin R has basic black tubes without handles, which get really hot and burning in the sun, and are difficult to handle or carry. read more

This is first river that I've gone tubing so not sure how great other places are. But Comal was terrific and I would do it again (as long as the river current is good). I rented from Texas Tubes (see my other review) which was a breeze. Now keep in mind that we went on a Monday. I've seen news on Comal being shut down on Saturday due to overcrowding. I'm so happy that I took a day off to enjoy the river b/c I'm sure I would've felt differently if I had to endure all that river traffic. Here's what went well from what I planned: - Went on a Monday - Took a cooler with drinks - Packed some food (someone suggested individual packs which was the right way to go) - Brought disposable, waterproof camera - Took no valuables What I'll do differently next time, especially since the draught is creating a slower river tubing: - Bring more drinks than you think you'll need. Trust me on this. - Bring more food than you think you'll need, especially beef jerky. - Make sure to put sunblock on your legs, especially your shin. Remember, when you're sitting in the tube, your shin faces out to the sun. While this was a great experience, the slow river current made this longer than I would've preferred. I packed for 2-3 hour trip, but it ended up taking over 4 hours. By 4th hour, I just wanted to get out of the river because I was getting bored and was out of food, and dangerously close to running out of water & beer. But this is definitely a cool thing to show off to everyone about living in central Texas in the summer. read more

We floated here on the fourth of July and were expecting it to be packed, the crowd was only just slightly larger than what you would expect on a normal summer weekend. We thought maybe they were slower because of the new regulations on disposable containers? So here's the rule, you can drink on the comal, but it must be in non-disposable container (nalgene bottle, thermos, etc) and I think you can only have 3-4 containers per person (not sure about this part). The three chutes make this float trip a little more adventurous than your typical trip. We brought our own tubes, and it looked like at least half of the other people did too. The spot where you initially put in at is a nice wide swimming hole, with lots of room to play in the water in addition to just floating. Just inside the gates of the park (no entry fee) you can set up and picnic or set up those shade tents and hang out all day. I would say if you're a family looking to spend a day on the river, this is probably better than the San Gabriel because of the swimming areas and the picnic and playground areas. We will definitely be going back! read more

It's easy to get mad at the New Braunfels law banning disposable containers (e.g. cans & bottles) on the Comal River, but it's hard to argue with the results: the river has never looked better! The new rules (http://tubeinnewbraunfels.com/rules/) mean that you have to do a little more planning than you might have done before, but it's still a great day out. And alcohol is *not* banned, despite popular rumors to the contrary. Tubing down the Comal River is just plain fun. If possible, go during the week rather than on the weekend. And go early no matter what day you go. Sure, it can get crowded, especially just before the first chute. But don't get upset. Just lean back and chill out. Go with the flow. read more

Came to NB for a 2 week vacation with the kids. The Comal is clean, the park is beautiful and well-kept. We tubed, swam at the city swimming hole, enjoyed the Wet Willie and the rope swing, ate Sno Cones and caught enough fish for a fish fry. On our last float, We stopped at the chute and our 10yr old slipped on a slippery sidewalk and injured her wrist. The employees at the City Tube Chute were friendly and helpful. The Park Ranger drove my husband to our truck so we could take daughter for an X-ray. We have added NB to our list of yearly musts for summer fun! I witnessed the manager, Luke, pop off and be rude to an older woman who was trying to rent tubes. At first, I thought maybe the lady was in the wrong, until I saw him yell at his employees all in front of us and a line other customers. He appears to be pompous and on a power trip-- cue the eye rolls and snide remarks to just about everyone in our listening distance. Terrible customer service. I get it- it's hot and crazy on weekends at the River and can only imagine the people the employees deal with. But this guy was out of line and down right degrading. I've gone tubing with Rockin R many times throughout the years and I've never had any problems with them! I just went this past weekend and was excited to see that they got new tubes! If you want a tube with a bottom, you get one of the older black tubes but if you get one without a bottom, they're blue and they each have 2 handles and a cup holder. Awesome!! Seriously, I love that cup holder. The blue tube also doesn't get so crazy hot like the black tubes. I believe it's $12 for a normal tube, $15 for a tube with a bottom, and we rented a tube with a cooler for $15. Be prepared: there are strict rules for tubing down the Comal: no styrofoam, no glass, no coolers over 16 quarts. Note that the rule regarding the cooler size is actually per person but who wants to have to deal with multiple coolers? We actually brought a cooler that was too big, but we were giving these netted bags, so we just threw our extra beers/drinks in a bag until we could replace finished drinks in the cooler. And yes, there are cops that are parked on the side of the river that are making sure people follow the rules (we got a warning last year for our cooler!). The process is simple. Get your tube, hop on the bus, and they'll drive you down to the start point (it's not that far-- it's walkable if you'd rather not wait when it's buy). They pick you up at the end point and you hop back on the bus. You can either do another round or you can call it a day! The ride is roughly 2 hours. My friends and I usually go for 2 rounds. For the Comal River, I haven't actually tried any of the other tubing companies but I've liked this one so I haven't bothered switching! read more
