We had my son's rehearsal dinner here on Friday night and Jason (the owner) closed down the shoppe for us to have a private party. Everyone at the dinner Loved what they ordered. On a recent visit to Canyon, my mother suggested eating at this establishment, located in a town square. We were greeted by our waitress (the sweetest lady ever), who showed us to our booth and provided us with our menu. Mom ordered the corned beef reuben with 1000 island dressing, which was delicious (I made sure to taste it.. for scientific purposes)! I ordered the Dominic Jalapeno Jack burger (with bacon, naturally), and was delivered an amazing, molten and yes, spicy beef creation! No fries, but my mom had apple sauce, and I asked for some yummy cheetos! The restaurant is filled with toys and even has a lunch pail wall, plus Funko Pop toys at the entrance. Unfortunately, I was too full to try one of their ice cream desserts, but I plan to remedy that next time I visit! read more

I brought my family here for my son's 5th birthday. The restaurant is cute, but the food and service were both so-so. The worst part in our experience was how slow (like, REALLY slow) everything was. Lynette and I were on our way to Lubbock, Texas when I noticed a sign for a Museum at West Texas A&M at Canyon.  It's an awesome Museum but by the time we came out we were hungry.  Driving to the downtown square we discovered a little time machine of a restaurant, Rocking Zebra Soda Shoppe.  This place is AWESOME.  It took me back to my childhood when my buddies and I would go to the Walgreens or Woolworth Soda fountains in downtown Elmhurst, Illinois.  This place has all the same sort of burgers, sandwiches, phosphates, milk shakes and malts.  You can add flavors to your fountain drinks. Plus the ice cream sundaes and banana splits. And everything is just as good as you remember.  The service is friendly,  like you've know the waitress for years.  Plus the atmosphere (and the music on the jukebox) takes you back like it's the 50s or early sixties.  They also sell alot of the old fashioned candy and craft sodas. What a wonderful spot for a quick lunch or to satisfy that sweet tooth! The staff are fantastic and the 50's/60's vibe in the front with the 80's in the back is SO FUN!!!! They have a diner feel with soda bar and booth as well as diner tables. Records hang from the ceiling, cola memorabilia and decor deck the walls and "Sh Boom" from The Chords tells you how "life would be a dream, sweetheart"! I understand staffing issues and being short handed, but waiting over an hour for burgers and sandwiches is excessive. One excuse was the order ticket was accidentally thrown in the trash, then we were told they had to break down hamburger meat and that was the reason for the delay. Which was it? The staff was really aloof and unapologetic about this long delay and then charged gratuity ahead of time when our tickets were brought to the table. I would've been willing to let it all slide with some semblance of an apology for poor service, but it never came. read more

Pricey. Quite so, but the burgers and the milkshakes really are quite good. They have an avocado burger I crave all the time. Their fries aren't frozen then fried mush like a couple other places in Canyon, or at least suuurrrre don't taste like it. I like their selection of vintage (probably not the right word) candies for sale. It adds to the feel of the place, and who doesn't love a candy bar. I hear they do really cute samplers for ice cream, and I mean to try one out eventually. I like that it's a local place and it being on the square makes it convenient and adds to the credibility in a way. My wife found this place online...what an all around disappointing experience. From very slow service (taking our order, delivering our food and keeping our drinks refilled...and it wasn't busy) to fouled up orders (both mine and my son's sandwiches were made incorrectly), underwhelming food, overpriced tiny-portioned ice cream and they charged an 18% gratuity for my family of 6 and I almost missed it and tipped on top of that! This is a nice specialty diner with a 50's-style nostalgic tribute to the pioneers in music. If you don't have an appreciation for vintage and/or antique items from days of yore, don't come here. The servers checked on us frequently, and the food was good. The menu offerings were reasonably priced, with most items being soups, sandwiches, and burgers. I had the Texan corned beef sandwich and potato salad. It was more than enough. The drink was a cherry limeade. Try out the Rockin' Zebra, and give it a chance. It isn't a typical and nondescript fast-food place. It is a place meant to take your time and have an actual conversation with someone. By the way, vintage and antique items are for sale in the back, part of the Purple Zebra Boutique, and also a Beauty Salon, located a little further back within the building. This is a fun place to check out. This is a good stop while checking out the little shops on the square. We enjoy their soft drinks and the kids love to see the candy. It is like an old time soda shop. I cannot recommend the food. We have tried sandwiches here but I have not found one that I would eat again.
