    Sliced Pork Barbecue Sandwich
    Kyle S.

Rocklands has become my local go-to spot for barbecue. The flavors, servings and prices are all right in that sweet spot where it's an easy choice and you know you're going to leave happy after a great meal. As soon as you get to the parking the delicious barbecue smell is sure to win you over. My favorite thing to get here is the sliced pork barbecue sandwich, which is a good entry point if you want to give this place a shot. Their sides are no slouch either: you really can't go wrong with either the potato salad or macaroni salad (or both). Actually, now that I'm writing all this, I'm starting to get the feeling I'll be making another trip back soon. Am I hungry? You bet. Thanks Rocklands!

After many times ordering delivery over the years, I finally ate here. This has the look and feel of a classic long time BBQ restaurant inside and has a patio for outdoor dining. You order at the counter and the bring your food to your table, you get your own drinks. It's a fairly short walk from the Virginia Square metro or there's a parking lot on site. Food was awesome as always, my sandwich was a large portion of well smoked chopped pork on a tasty bun. Be sure and try a little of their house BBQ sauce on it. The collards and BBQ beans were also excellent. A little bit of the fried okra was overcooked but overall it was fresh and hot. Large portions and I barely finished my meal even though I was starving after walking the Mt. Vernon trail. The half sweet half unsweet tea was just what you want at a BBQ place and I was impressed. Rocklands has been around quite a while for a reason. I enjoyed my meal and will order delivery again in the future and also come back to eat here again.

Came to Rocklands for Father's Day. It's my husbands favorite. He had the combo of pulled chicken and baby back ribs, as did my son. My daughter had the marinated wings and I had pulled chicken. We had sides of fries (sad there were no onion rings), mac & cheese and corn pudding. All was very good. Place was clean and had plenty of searing. We for there early for dinner and we had good timing bc by the time we left it was packed. Food came out quickly. I was told the pulled chicken wouldn't have extra bbq sauce and it did and we were told the wings would have bbq sauce and it didn't. Only complaint, otherwise very good.

This location is good, but not quite as good as the Alexandria location. The people are still very friendly, the food is still pretty good (the corn pudding is so good, like the soft inside of a hush puppy, and the mashed potatoes are amazing.) I went with the chopped pork sandwich, which is actually what I generally would call pulled pork. It was good. I always like the assortment of additions you can put on everything: the spicy pickles and pickled onions are both really good on a sandwich. The fries were well done. It feels like a bbq place with the pig decor, so the ambiance is exactly what I expect. There is a large table placed really awkwardly right as you walk in and right next to the registers which conveniently holds the wet wipes and utensils, but unfortunately makes it kinda crowded and cluttered up near the registers, so my nephew did bump his head on it while dodging people. I just like the big openness of the other location better. Still good food though.

Recommended, but pricey. Skip the sides. Came in for Friday lunch, got my order in, got my plate near the window in under 5min. Went with ordering the thick cut brisket sandwich with (ketchup) beans & cukes in mint, which was quick & easy at the walk up counter with minimum wait. The brisket was good, especially with the mustard sauce. The sweet bbq sauce & other sauces were pretty flavorless to me. The cuke salad was good, but it used dried mint that hadn't had time to rehydrate. The beans were basically a cooked canned bean thrown into ketchup (so would pass on those.) Seating was good, ample, and noise levels were reasonable. Overall, $20 w/tip. Decent but not amazing. Would go again. B+

A good amount of food! We got the family feast and added half ribs of pork. It comes with some buns and jalapeno cornbread which was delicious! The baked beans were so good and helped cut through the meats. The chicken was a bit dry and not my favorite. But the ribs were delicious. It gets super busy during the day so make sure to beat the lunch rush! There's also a separate parking space for diners.

Very happy with our meals tonight. Walking in, BBQ smell permeates in the best possible way. Tried the 3 meats (with 2 sides). Beef was my favorite. Nice variety of bbq sauces on tables. Very spicy spicy pickles. Pickled onions were decent. Potato salad was good, mashed potatoes and baked beans were excellent. Tasty unsweetened mint iced tea, very refreshing with this food. Service was incredibly fast! Will be back!

There was ample free parking in the parking lot. Once we entered, we were pleasantly greeted! Loved that part. We took time to review the menu and ordered a Hazy draft, which came with a free pork taco. Literally the best thing NOT on the menu lol, but they so sell them every Tuesday for $2.75. I'd be back specifically for these! Plenty of meat and delicious taste! As an entree we ordered the chicken and ribs and the grilled hot Italian sausage hoagie with fried okra, old fashioned mashed potatoes, and red beans and rice. The sausage fantastic was as expected and enjoyed, the sides were nothing to rave about. I had the meat entree and was BEYOND DISAPPOINTED when you think of bbq, you think of ribs and that's essentially all I wanted. I'll definitely note that I ordered my ribs with no sauce, because I'm from Texas and that's how we (I) eat them, but I wasn't expected them to come dry and rubbery, didn't even touch the chicken. The fried okra was fresh and hot, but either the grease needed changing or they were over cooked. Upon leaving, I asked about the tacos because I enjoyed them and gave my two cents about the ribs and was met with the response "we usually tell people to have them with the sauce". Ok ‍ After my experience I started looking around at the other plates coming out and the two fish plates I saw were definitely overcooked (burnt, no exaggeration), but I did see one grilled chicken plate cooked to perfection. It may be a long while before I come back, but if I do, I hope it's a Tuesday bc the tacos were

Founded in Washington, D.C., it's fun to see Rocklands in Arlington too. (They also have a location in Alexandria.) After a morning with friends at Oak Grove Park, we stopped in for lunch on a Saturday in May around 12:30 p.m. There was a short line, but it moved quickly. Here's our experience. 1) Food: There's a large menu on a big poster when you walk in that can be a little overwhelming, but the menu above the register is more accessible. I ordered their version of a pulled pork sandwich (they call is "chopped pork") and turned it into a platter so I could get coleslaw and baked beans. My daughter enjoyed the mac and cheese side. Throughout the space are stations and bottles with their house BBQ sauce, sweet and smokey sauce, vinegar-based BBQ sauce, and mustard BBQ sauce. The sweet and smokey is thick and paired well with the sandwich. The coleslaw didn't look good, but it was surprisingly tasty. 2) Drinks: They have all sorts of drinks, including fountain drinks. We asked for cups for water and there's a vat of lemon slices to go in the water by the fountain drink area. They also sell beer, etc. ' 3) Space: There's an outdoor patio and plenty of seating inside with small to large tables. The tables have BBQ sauce containers on them. There's a parking lot and inside are two restrooms kept clean.

First, I have to admit I tried Rocklands Barbeque yearssss ago BUT wasn't a fan. Now fast forward to a month ago, I was at a gathering and was stuffing my face! Turns out they had catered from Rocklands Barbeque. I had literally been thinking about stopping by ever since....needed some more of those greens and Mac & cheese! Will be returning again soon! Prices are very reasonable!

Cute place! Great for groups as there is an upstairs dining area. I came here New Year's Day with a group I went hiking with. I had never been here before so excited to try out a new place. I ordered the pulled chicken sandwich, greens, mac & cheese, corn pudding, and an old fashion. The food was okay. It wasn't great barbecue, but after a 4 mile hike and not having ate all day, it worked. The chicken was good, not a huge fan of the sauce that came on it. The mac and cheese left much to be desired. The greens were actually really good and the corn pudding was a different taste than what Im used to but not bad. The best part of my meal was the old fashion. They didn't have Maker's so I got Bulleit. I believe the gentleman's name behind the bar was Luis and he was super friendly and helpful. I feel like my drink was made with love, at least it tasted like it.

Texas cut brisket and beef ribs. It's a must.

I liked the modern industrial interior (exposed ceilings, cement floor), complete with bespoke woodpiles. Super cheerful service. Amazing how many things you can smoke. Now, drinks and food. Nothing liked a smoking whiskey cocktail, people sitting next to you will stare in envy (as well they should). First off, I do think everyone should try Japanese BBQ at least once just to experience the difference for themselves. We got the Premium AYCE option. It's advertised around $45, but after tax, drinks, and everything else, it definitely ends up being more expensive than that. We also ordered the lychee sake, which was really good and probably one of my favorite parts of the meal. One thing I really liked was the atmosphere. The restaurant has a nice, intimate feel because a lot of the tables and booths are separated, so it feels more private than your typical BBQ spot. The lighting also adds to the vibe and makes it feel cozy without being too dark. We don't eat pork, so we mostly focused on the beef options. Personally, when I'm doing all-you-can-eat, I don't really want to fill up on chicken or seafood. My biggest takeaway is that while there are a ton of different marinades and menu options, a lot of the beef cuts ended up tasting pretty similar to me. The differences felt more like thickness or texture rather than completely different flavors. Maybe I'm not cultured enough in Japanese BBQ to appreciate all the nuances, but that's honestly how it came across to me. At the end of the day, I think I still prefer Korean BBQ. For me, the overall experience isn't different enough to justify paying significantly more. I'd probably rather save $20 and go get KBBQ instead. One thing worth mentioning is that both of us felt pretty sick afterward. mostly nauseous and overly full. To be clear, I don't think there was anything wrong with the food. We probably just overdid it, which is easy to do at an AYCE spot. The standout part of the experience was definitely the service. The staff were incredibly friendly, attentive, and welcoming throughout the meal. Honestly, the customer service is the main reason I'd consider coming back. Also, sorry for the lack of photos. I was way too hungry and focused on eating to remember to take any. Overall: good experience, great service, tasty drinks, nice ambiance, but I personally still prefer KBBQ.

They have a variety of sauces you can choose from, ranging in spice. The cashiers are very nice and personable. The vibe of the restaurant is exactly what you'd expect from a BBQ spot. They play classic rock from the 70s-90s and have checkered print on the walls. Really good atmosphere. 10/10 recommend. Sloppy Mama's is 1000% going to be a staple for my family.

Decent bbq spot - friendly cashiers but definitely a bit of a wait just for some bbq. Place was…read morereally busy midday Saturday but can't blame them. Clean restrooms and tons of indoor seating. Loved their sauce bar- Alabama, Kansas City, Carolina style to make all the different bbq lovers happy. I agree with the sentiment of wishing they had combo plates as one sausage was like 6 bucks which is wild. Foodwise - tried the coleslaw, mac and cheese, jalapeno cheddar sausage, and the pulled pork. Best thing hands down was the mac and cheese - creamy but with great flavor and a great cheese ratio. Coleslaw was so so- good but some wilted pieces and was a bit thrown by the pickle pieces (though I love pickles). Jalapeno cheddar sausage was good but in my opinion, a bit overpriced for just one sausage. Lastly - the pulled pork. While not bad quality meat, the aftertaste was a bit off putting and I think the chips they may use in their smoker are just not my vibe. With the sauces, you didn't notice it as much but just on generic taste, not my favorite pulled pork in the area. Cornbread and butter were great - no complaints there. Overall solid spot- I'd come back for sausage, maybe try the brisket, but will definitely get some mac and cheese again.

We said heck yeahhhh, so the decision was made AMBIANCE: Big space, pretty empty as we were one of the last people to eat before they closed! They were very accommodating-- letting us know their kitchen closed at 10:30 PM and the restaurant closed at 11 PM. When we arrived, it was 945, so we weren't looking to play around. We knew what we were gonna get. Onward we went SERVICE: My girl Arieles (PRETTY sure that's what her name was) was our server! She was so sweet and got us our stuff promptly. We knew we were coming in late so we weren't gonna waste time, but she was joyful to serve us regardless and I appreciate that. So many times people are FED UP, and it shows, to be at the end of their shift (and I get it), so it was nice to have someone of good demeanor to host us! FOOD: We ordered brisket, spicy pork belly, spicy chicken, and spicy bulgogi. First time trying the spicy Bulgogi for fear that it was gonna be TOO spicy and it was not at all! To reference -- I thought the kimchi was a bit spicier than the bulgogi! So try it, flavor is amazing! Can't wait to come again. I hadn't gone to KBBQ in a long while!

There's a ton of options to choose from and you can make every visit a great one. You'll cook your food to your liking and there are delicious dipping sauces to complement what you cook. I think my favorite is the sesame oil and salt (you'll have to ask for it). I love the pork belly dishes, but everything is very good.
