The flavors, servings and prices are all right in that sweet spot where it's an easy choice and you know you're going to leave happy after a great meal. As soon as you get to the parking the delicious barbecue smell is sure to win you over. My favorite thing to get here is the sliced pork barbecue sandwich, which is a good entry point if you want to give this place a shot. After many times ordering delivery over the years, I finally ate here. This has the look and feel of a classic long time BBQ restaurant inside and has a patio for outdoor dining. You order at the counter and the bring your food to your table, you get your own drinks. It's a fairly short walk from the Virginia Square metro or there's a parking lot on site. Food was awesome as always, my sandwich was a large portion of well smoked chopped pork on a tasty bun. Be sure and try a little of their house BBQ sauce on it. The collards and BBQ beans were also excellent. A little bit of the fried okra was overcooked but overall it was fresh and hot. Large portions and I barely finished my meal even though I was starving after walking the Mt. Vernon trail. The half sweet half unsweet tea was just what you want at a BBQ place and I was impressed. Came to Rocklands for Father's Day. It's my husbands favorite. He had the combo of pulled chicken and baby back ribs, as did my son. My daughter had the marinated wings and I had pulled chicken. We had sides of fries (sad there were no onion rings), mac & cheese and corn pudding. All was very good. Place was clean and had plenty of searing. We for there early for dinner and we had good timing bc by the time we left it was packed. Food came out quickly. This location is good, but not quite as good as the Alexandria location. The people are still very friendly, the food is still pretty good (the corn pudding is so good, like the soft inside of a hush puppy, and the mashed potatoes are amazing.) I went with the chopped pork sandwich, which is actually what I generally would call pulled pork. It was good. I always like the assortment of additions you can put on everything: the spicy pickles and pickled onions are both really good on a sandwich. The fries were well done. It feels like a bbq place with the pig decor, so the ambiance is exactly what I expect. There is a large table placed really awkwardly right as you walk in and right next to the registers which conveniently holds the wet wipes and utensils, but unfortunately makes it kinda crowded and cluttered up near the registers, so my nephew did bump his head on it while dodging people. Went with ordering the thick cut brisket sandwich with (ketchup) beans & cukes in mint, which was quick & easy at the walk up counter with minimum wait. The brisket was good, especially with the mustard sauce. The sweet bbq sauce & other sauces were pretty flavorless to me. The cuke salad was good, but it used dried mint that hadn't had time to rehydrate. The beans were basically a cooked canned bean thrown into ketchup (so would pass on those.) Food: DELICIOUS! My friend and I shared the pulled pork sandwich and fries and seriously ...the pulled pork sammy was the best by far in the NOVA area. Fries smashed too. Service: Cashier was attentive and friendly. We asked a gentlemen who was delivering food for some cutlery and extra plates and he returned with the items and a great smile :) Ambiance: I mean, if you don't feel like your wearing the smell of smoke for the rest of the day when you exit a bbq joint, is it really barbeque??? So we had Rocklands cater our Civic Association's annual Veteran's Day dinner to raise money for Wounded Warriors and Fisher House. Every single moment dealing with them was beyond exceptional! Catering staff quickly followed up and made recommendations per number of people we were expecting. Everything we needed was included. We even had a bit left over that some folks were able to take home. Delivery was on the minute on time, the person delivering was incredibly helpful and set everything up for us. Totally was fun to deal with and had massive Southern Hospitality! When 'boss' said we didn't need some equipment, it was promptly refunded on the bill. We had bids out to other BBQ places, but they were totally not as professional or immediately responded. We will definetly be using them again and highly recommend for catering! read more

We took time to review the menu and ordered a Hazy draft, which came with a free pork taco. Literally the best thing NOT on the menu lol, but they so sell them every Tuesday for $2.75. As an entree we ordered the chicken and ribs and the grilled hot Italian sausage hoagie with fried okra, old fashioned mashed potatoes, and red beans and rice. The sausage fantastic was as expected and enjoyed, the sides were nothing to rave about. I had the meat entree and was BEYOND DISAPPOINTED when you think of bbq, you think of ribs and that's essentially all I wanted. I'll definitely note that I ordered my ribs with no sauce, because I'm from Texas and that's how we (I) eat them, but I wasn't expected them to come dry and rubbery, didn't even touch the chicken. The fried okra was fresh and hot, but either the grease needed changing or they were over cooked. Upon leaving, I asked about the tacos because I enjoyed them and gave my two cents about the ribs and was met with the response "we usually tell people to have them with the sauce". Ok ‍ After my experience I started looking around at the other plates coming out and the two fish plates I saw were definitely overcooked (burnt, no exaggeration), but I did see one grilled chicken plate cooked to perfection. Founded in Washington, D.C., it's fun to see Rocklands in Arlington too. (They also have a location in Alexandria.) After a morning with friends at Oak Grove Park, we stopped in for lunch on a Saturday in May around 12:30 p.m. There was a short line, but it moved quickly. Here's our experience. 1) Food: There's a large menu on a big poster when you walk in that can be a little overwhelming, but the menu above the register is more accessible. I ordered their version of a pulled pork sandwich (they call is "chopped pork") and turned it into a platter so I could get coleslaw and baked beans. My daughter enjoyed the mac and cheese side. Throughout the space are stations and bottles with their house BBQ sauce, sweet and smokey sauce, vinegar-based BBQ sauce, and mustard BBQ sauce. The sweet and smokey is thick and paired well with the sandwich. The coleslaw didn't look good, but it was surprisingly tasty. 2) Drinks: They have all sorts of drinks, including fountain drinks. We asked for cups for water and there's a vat of lemon slices to go in the water by the fountain drink area. They also sell beer, etc. ' 3) Space: There's an outdoor patio and plenty of seating inside with small to large tables. The tables have BBQ sauce containers on them. Cute place! Great for groups as there is an upstairs dining area. I came here New Year's Day with a group I went hiking with. I had never been here before so excited to try out a new place. I ordered the pulled chicken sandwich, greens, mac & cheese, corn pudding, and an old fashion. The food was okay. It wasn't great barbecue, but after a 4 mile hike and not having ate all day, it worked. The chicken was good, not a huge fan of the sauce that came on it. The mac and cheese left much to be desired. The greens were actually really good and the corn pudding was a different taste than what Im used to but not bad. The best part of my meal was the old fashion. They didn't have Maker's so I got Bulleit. I believe the gentleman's name behind the bar was Luis and he was super friendly and helpful. I'm sorry if it seems harsh but I've given them three separate chances and I just can't do it. First time I tried them was 3 years ago and I walked with my food about 15 minutes so it was cold and dry and assumed it was my fault. Went back a few weeks ago and ordered a sampler that had pulled pork, thin style brisket, and chicken. Ate at the restaurant that time and everything was still cold and dry. Also was not a fan of them pouring bbq sauce on all the meats because good bbq should not need sauce on it. This time, I picked up some of the Texas style thick cut brisket, mashed potatoes, and baked beans to go. I tried to get one sausage link but they don't allow that for some reason, you need to buy a pound of them or get a sandwich with no bun (but it's close to $8). Even the thick cut brisket was still pretty dry and had very little seasoning on it. The mashed potatoes reminded me of instant mashed potatoes, and the bbq baked beans were way too sweet. They also had something stringy in them, not sure if that was supposed to be meat? Their spicy mustard bbq sauce is delicious however. Unfortunately this place is not for me. read more

I'm sorry really wanted to love this place because it smelled incredible and the inside was so on theme as well. Coming from Miami - the BBQ bar is set pretty high on taste / portions/ and creative spins to some standard classic like ribs or brisket. This was just lacking on all fronts. Starting with some positives the service counter was very helpful we settled on a platter that had ribs / chicken / brisket. We paired it with the cornbread dressing / mashed potatoes/ baked beans / and Mexican street corn. Food came out promptly nice and hot and looked so good. To my personal disappointment absolutely all three protein items were smothered in bbq sauce - I look fwd to taking a juicy bite of a nicely marbled brisket and don't want to hide that flavor under sauces. ALSO This brisket was so thinly SHAVED - it took away from that idea of sitting with a fatty bite of brisket. Not a fan of this cut - felt like deli meat for a sandwich. I had to ask for my chicken to be recooked since it was bloody/raw inside by the joint (not to be confused by the smoke ring pinkish look poultry can take when smoked) and asked to plz also get more brisket non sauced and same for the new chicken - to which they were extremely nice and accommodating. I proceeded to add salt to EVERYTHING because it lacked flavor -which leads to Another positive they put flakey salt on every table (just be sure to take the salt shakers top off because there's no way to get the flakes to come out of the shakers little holes made for regular table salt) Unfortunately the brisket became even more difficult to eat now flavorless AND dry from how thin it was sliced. The recooked non sauced chicken was now very tasty with the salt and the ribs as well super tender and fairly sized. The platter itself was just airing on the side of personal not very shareable. If you come starving like we were one platter alone wouldn't do. I believe ours was called the Belly Buster. I don't feel it was abundant at all. Finally moving on to the sides, the only stand out was the MASH! Wow I could order a giant tub of this alone - so so good but tiny portions! My 3yr old ate the entire mashed potato side by herself! The cornbread pudding was almost on a saltier side reminded me of a Mexican TAMAL masa.. not the sweet corn flavor profile I was yearning for. The street corn had no personality - just bland kernels and extremely cold like it was just taken out of a giant tub from the fridge. Finally the baked beans were so tomato-y and sharp that with the bbq smothered meats - it was hard to get a balanced bite... Overall I'm sure lots of people will find it yummy specially if you come for just the ribs we are just spoiled with years of award winning BBQ in Miami it's hard not to compare and feel underwhelmed. read more

We all enjoyed some awesome beef brisket sandwiches here yesterday. I personally enjoy all types of barbeque whether it's the beef brisket or the pulled pork. Yesterday was a beef brisket type of day, mainly because everyone else in my family wanted it also. Thankfully they were open earlier for lunch, and I think they did that for the holiday. They normally open later in the afternoon sometimes past lunch time. The service was brisk in spite of all of the customers who were waiting to order. Best BBQ...I can't even name my favorites to be honest but posting my most recent meal of baby back ribs, their amazing greens, coleslaw, and cornbread with jalapeño (it's not spicy). The chicken and the chopped pork were both very good! Both very flavorful and tender.
