Hi-Fi Tex-Mex BBQ delivered on pretty much every front. The tacos, brisket, and guac were all excellent, and the cocktails were just as strong, our bartender was genuinely great, friendly and full of solid recommendations. They've also got a massive beer selection on tap if that's more your thing. The terrace out back is a nice touch, open-air but shaded by pergolas, and parking was easy thanks to the residential street. Only complaint is the bugs, they were aggressive out there, probably drawn in by the frozen drinks and sweeter dishes. Didn't ruin the experience, but worth knowing going in. Will be back. read more

What a disgrace to call themselves Tex Mex. It's more like I don't know how to cook so I throw stuff together. No one in Texas puts New Mexico aneheim chiles in their barbecue. It's more Californian. The cilantro rice has dried spices and no cilantro when cilantro is so inexpensive. Rename your restaurant so people know what to expect. The waiter automatically refilled our sodas not notifying us that you were charged per soda. It was not on the menu either. read more

Ordered two platters (and a couple of other items) for delivery. Order #231f4c02). They arrived without the sides. I called the delivery service, which reported that redelivery is unavailable. They provided a refund that was less than the amount of the sides. Out of curiosity, I went back to HiFi's website, where I was able to create an order for the missing sides, meaning they could absolutely have redelivered our sides. A restaurant that does Tex Mex and BBQ but does neither well. I'd give it a 2.5 but I'll be nice and round up. My girlfriend and I ordered take out from here for dinner this past Friday. I got the smoked wings, brisket with plantains and Mac n cheese. The wings were good. A bit dry but that happens on a smoker but the flavor was on point. The brisket was tasty but there was a tiny amount of it for $20. It also wasn't trimmed correctly. I could tell the meat Cinder BBQ in DC gives you twice the amount for the same price. The Mac n Cheese was completely flavorless. It takes the award for most flavorless Mac n Cheese I've ever tasted. Plantains were good. My girlfriend got the brisket burrito which was good but had a lot of fatty bits of brisket. We wouldn't go back for another try without some glowing recommendations that the food has gotten better. read more

Really solid neighborhood taco and bbq place! We came on a very cold and rainy night and they sat us inside at evening star and still served the hi fi menu. Really enjoyed the brisket platter and a sampling of their different tacos. Will be back to try them again when we it is warm enough to sit outside! read more

Unless you know you are looking for this place it's kind of hard to find. We were craving grilled meats close to home, Yelped options and this place came out so we decided to give it a try. The entrance is not the most popular so arrived at the address given but ended up entering through the dumpsters (back) not a great sight. Anyhow, I looked lost as there was no sign or direction and when I approached the servers they looked, yet did not welcome me to the place, I had to ask if I was in the right place. Fast forward, asked to be seated for dinner in that outside patio but was told a thunderstorm would come through and it was best I sit upstairs. Followed the attendant inside to go upstairs and I asked if the same bbq food would be served inside to which he stated it was a different restaurant. We requested to sit back outside as we wanted bbq/grilled meats. Sat and ordered beers outside. Once again we were told that soon a thunderstorm would be coming through and it was best to be inside. It seemed like the servers weren't looking for business and I told him exactly that, for which he replied that he would be able to take my order and bring it upstairs. We then went back inside/upstairs to what I will call from now on the "dark room". A few minutes later our food came through. Very delicious and moist meats. I ordered the 3 meats platter- brisket, pulled pork, ribs. The only down side, the brisket was extremely salty to the point that the only way to eat them was inside the tortilla with the white sauce provided. The rib meat fell off the bone and the pork was very tasty. The jalapeño Mac and cheese was dry and cold. Very disappointing. The portion was great though, lots of meat for the price. The environment in the dark room was not all that. Place gave me speakeasy vibes but the server there was too distracted so we had to wave him down a few times to get his attention. All in all, seems like a nice place upstairs for drinks late at night on a date. Other than that, not sure that downstairs/outside area is the place to be (for me). read more

Came here for dinner with my boyfriend and dog last Saturday night. I've had the food from HiFi a few times at the Lounge space but was excited to sit outside! It's much larger than you realize with many seats and they also have a few bar seats as well. It was busy but they had a table or cabana option. We chose cabana but next time I would take a table. It was a little awkward to eat with the low table. I'd take a cabana in the future for drinks and some snacks, but not dinner. Our waitress came out quickly and we got some drinks and chose the quesadilla (had before and love it) and decided on the smoked turkey platter. It was good but I don't think I'd get the turkey again just because the other meats are so good. The side options are tasty. We also got the loaded tots - yum! However the rest of the time we were ignored by our server so I removed a star. We were going to get more drinks but our server had disappeared. I eventually had to go find her and ask for our check. Really good BBQ in Del Ray, basically right behind the evening star front porch. I wish I took pictures before we dug in but alas. We got the 3 meat platter, brisket, chicken, and turkey with beans and plantains as sides and it was delicious. They have a good selection of beer and wine from being associated with evening star and planet wine I believe. Very chill vibe and nice ambiance especially if you get cabana seating. Service was excellent, the waiter brought out a bowl of water for my friend's dog without us asking. We went on Halloween and it was cute seeing the staff give candy to trick or treaters. read more

As anyone who has read my reviews knows, I only put a review on yelp when I'm positively overwhelmed or truly disappointed. This time I was truly disappointed. My daughter ran in the Marine Corps Marathon this morning, and afterwards we opted to eat at Hi Fi in Alexandria. My party consisted of myself, my spouse, both of my daughters, and my future son-in-law. After waiting an hour to be seated, (no big deal) I think I knew pretty much from my first look at the menu that there was a potential for disappointment. I noticed that several of the meal options included fries, but was a little surprised to see that fries were not offered as a side for the meals that did not include them, but did include " sides". When it was my turn to order, our server informed me that the reason for this was that the meals that included fries as part of the meal were made in "a different restaurant" (I'm assuming the one that is located right next-door). I'm not really sure why the restaurant next-door couldn't make me a side of fries, but apparently this was not something that Hi Fi does. You can apparently only have fries if "the restaurant next-door" makes your entire entrees. The first four orders were brought out a little sporadically (meaning a noticeable difference in time between them), but my daughter who ran in the marathon was never served. After waiting 10 minutes or so I asked our server where her food was and he said he didn't know and he ran back into the kitchen. He came out perhaps five minutes later and let us know her food would be ready in five minutes. After another 10 minutes, I asked again where her food was and he again ran back into the kitchen before coming back out and saying it would be right out. He also offered by way of an explanation that her meal had been served to somebody else. About the time the other four of us finished eating, they finally brought my daughter's meal out. We all were a little surprised to see that she had two slices of brisket when her sister who also ordered the brisket platter only received one. We initially thought perhaps this was the kitchen's way of making up for serving her food late. I had ordered the two meat platter and one of my meats was brisket (the other was ribs) and I also only received one piece of brisket. As they were cut extremely thin I just assumed that was the way that Hi Fi serves their brisket (one slice per order), but was a little shocked a few moments ago when I checked the food pictures on Yelp for this restaurant and noticed that every other plate pictured on this website shows two pieces of brisket. As for the quality of food, my single slice of brisket had visible finishing salt sprinkled all over it and while tender, it was a little too salty for my taste. The two ribs that came with my platter were very dry and almost without meat. At this point in my review, I'm a little disappointed in myself for not taking pictures of my food as evidence of everything I'm describing and I apologize for not doing so. My two sides came in tiny little serving bowls that looked like they were more appropriately sized to be included in a child's kitchen set. Although they were cute, the portions were extremely small. On top of that, as we were only offered knives and forks, I found the forks not really suited for scooping either my mac & cheese or rice out of these little bowls. No complaints about the mac & cheese, but I'm pretty sure that the rice was not actually cooked rice meaning that it started out as dried rice but that it was instead parboiled (think Uncle Ben's) as it was flavorful, but the rice was pretty hard versus soft the way freshly cooked rice comes out. If I am incorrect about the way the rice was cooked. I apologize for mis-describing it. After the total screw up with my daughter's order, I expected one of two things to potentially occur (if not both). I fully expected a manager to come out and apologize for my daughter being served after the other four of us had already finished our meals, but that did not occur. I also wondered if some sort of compensation might have been offered or provided to us, but that did not occur either. Overall, not impressed at all with the food or service at this particular Hi Fi and don't plan on returning. read more

My friend loves this place so decided to go give it a try. It is tucked away kind of a open backyard area, so not the biggest. Since it is outside that does leave you open to the bugs flying around which was not the best. I decided to go with the two meat platter. The ribs were good and the brisket was amazing. The sides were nothing special. They had good drink options too; the bourbon slush was not bad. The queso was good but the chips that came along with them were not great. This place was a little confusing to find bc it's in the back of a diner that goes by a different name. We thought we were in the wrong place, so we walked in to ask where Hi/Fi was and the server let us know that it was operating in the back and upstairs that evening. We started with frozen rum cocktails that were on special for only $5- a steal. As for food, I ordered the "pig wings": smoked ribs finished in the fryer and glazed with gochujang. These were AMAZINGGGGGG. My husband ordered a brisket platter, and the brisket was delicious and moist. One of the sides offered is pozole which he got and it was very tasty. Will be back! read more

The BBQ brisket eaten with tortillas, the mix of pickled items, and the variety of bbq sauces and salsas wowed me today. I enjoyed it much more than Valentina's Tex-Mex BBQ in Austin - and I'm from Austin. I can't believe this gem is in my neighborhood. In frickin' Alexandria. The portions of meat on the platters is pretty substantial. I can eat a lot, but couldn't even eat half of a 3-meat platter. The sides of red pozole and chile verde (on the tart tomatillo side) were also filled with shredded beef/pork. Also really liked the smoked wings with pickled chiles and onions, and the queso with green chile was reminiscent of home. Everything was nicely seasoned and perfectly smoky, when a common pitfall these days at BBQ joints is overly smoking and/or overly salting the meats. Anyway, no longer need to make the drive to 2Fifty when I can just walk to Hi/Fi! read more

have tried the top 10 BBQ places in the DMV and hands down the best smoked Brisket, Pulled Pork and Carnitas has the best flavors and is not dry. We buy by the pound and make Nachos, tacos, and Sandwiches. The Cilantro Rice and the Beans ( I don't even like beans) have such amazing flavor. The staff is so friendly and accommodating they will let you try a sample of anything to before you order. I recommend anyone give it a try. Aside: excellent choice for the Gluten Free population. I loved this place. We were bopping around the Del Ray Vintage Flea and stumbled upon Hi Fi for lunch. We were planning on sitting out front at the Front Porch, but my friend noticed seating in the back, and there it was. A little outdoor oasis, calling to us. The vibe is chill and so cute. It's all outdoor and they have little private cabanas with couches around the perimeter with the main dining area with tables in the center of the space. They have an old VW bus behind the bar and a cute little play area for kids (not behind the bar). I loved the overhead trellis with plants and tiny disco balls, shading the entire space. Dogs are welcome, which mine really appreciated. Service was a little slow, but still great. I think the kitchen was just really busy. It was one of the first nice days we've had this year and everyone was out. Everyone who worked there was really friendly and on top of things. The food was great. My friend had the chilaquiles and loved them, and I got the smash burger. It was really good. I especially liked the homemade pickles on the burger. I will definitely go back. In fact, I'm already planning on taking my sister's family when they visit next month. My little nephew will love the play area and everyone else will love the food and chill atmosphere. Great restaurant. I loved it really. The outdoor portion is really great. The chef and owner greeted me at my table, great people! I think the owners name was Michael or something. He was so nice. I would go back anytime. Also their drinks are great, tons of tap beers, great cocktails too. Good for date night, brunch with the kids, casual lunch, literally any occasion. Ugh. Ordered a margarita. I think it came premixed. It was 30 minutes from closing at 8:30 and the bartender was totally not into serving anymore. The margarita was mostly water. I told her it was water and I'd prefer a wine (something she didn't have to mix). She had me wait while she made several more watered-down drinks. Setting is cool. I ONLY recommended if you are drinking something they can't water down. read more
