A bit late on my review, but absolutely had a great experience working with Brendan. Made an appointment online, he was very responsive and we worked out a time and date for him to fit our small project in. We had pre-purchased special anchors and screws to install a couple of wall beds on our apt, but our parts ended up not working... =[. Brendan showed up right on time, had all the tools needed to do the job and clean up, and extra heavy duty anchors and screws ! Brendan worked quickly, efficiently, did a great job and cleaned up so it looked like he was never there. except the giant wall beds expertly installed. I couldn't be more pleased with the work Brendan did converting my decrepit back-of-the-garage space into a beautiful, functional laundry/pantry/workroom. He built, replaced, and insulated walls; added doors and a window; mounted floor-to-ceiling pantry cabinets; and handled all the trim and molding. Nothing was out of scope, and whenever an issue arose, we discussed it and moved forward as a creative team. He and his assistant also tackled a handful of small household jobs that had been nagging me--replacing the floor of the kitchen sink, adjusting the door to accommodate pull-out bins, and reviving a sagging garden gate I'd been quoted $3,000 to replace. As others have noted, Brendan is communicative, helpful, and upbeat. He is highly skilled and completed everything on budget. That's practically unheard of in a remodeling project. Oh, and for women homeowners: it's refreshing to work with a contractor who treats you with friendly respect and collaboration. If you have a project in mind, reach out! Brendan redid our 1980's era bath. When you're in the house while remodeling it's good to have someone you are comfortable with and I found Brendan easy to work with. He is also an excellent fabricator: the fit of the tub surround and the floor, despite the tub nook's lack of square the floor's many nooks and projections, were excellently done. He also recreated the front of the vanity, cutting new doors and drawerfronts. His paint prep and execution were excellent as well. Brendan can be relied on to make decision for you that are appropriate - he picked the paint sheen, replaced electrical outlets that were outdated etc. Or you can tell him exactly what you want where it matters to you. He rebuilt our deck, redid a bathroom, turned our dungeon of a workroom into a lovely place to store things, not to mention a myriad of other projects of varying sizes, (and one day - the kitchen)! We recently got to work with Brendan again, this is our second time, and just like the first time he was absolutely amazing. His work is outstanding, and he's an excellent communicator and teacher. He's always willing to show us what he's doing or teach us something even if it's unrelated to the job at hand. This time he was doing the stairs, but on a lark we asked some insulation questions and the next day he brought over a bunch of insulation kit, showed us how to use it, installed it, and because he knows we're very price conscious, he offered and then instructed us on exactly how to clean up and close up the walls so he could get back to the real project. We've learned a lot from him and visitors pretty much always comment about how cool his projects are. He thinks about things differently and is willing to break the mold to make a solution that really works for you. In our first project we asked him to build in a cat litter area with an outside vent and a super quiet bathroom fan; I can't imagine many contractors that would do such a weird thing, but it has been a life changer and he never batted an eye. He just joined in on the brainstorming and made the idea even cooler by making it two story and adding a little spiral staircase! This is our second time with him, so I can say with certainty that we will be calling on him again for our next projects. read more

We were overcharged significantly. When asked about an itemized accounting, I learned that his charges included the frequent breaks he took during the day (which we were charged for), and when I inquired about this further, he said he charged us for the time he was researching and learning how to do parts of the project. When I told him I didn't think we should pay for his training or the "how to's" as I was paying for his expertise and that he should be doing his training on his time, he ignored me and never reimbursed us for the significant overcharges, I will never hire him again. read more

Having had a very positive experience with Brendan and Rockstar Remodel on a previous project, we opted to utilize his services on a much bigger one; remodeling a bathroom. Unfortunately, that turned out to be a mistake. While we have to give credit to Brendan for being professional, punctual, and a good communicator, he is unfortunately also inexperienced. What we are left with is a bathroom that is has a tile job with uneven grout, tiles at different depths, and different grout colors. To his credit, he did repair the floor and some of the wall tiles for free, but many issues were not addressed. We have had 3 people come out to help us repair the work, all in the $2,000 range. All agreed that he should have brought in a tile person to do the work, since he wasn't able to do it up to the standard we should have been able to expect. If you opt to use Brendan, ensure that he is upfront about his experience level on your specific project. Otherwise, you will be disappointed. read more

Where to start? We removed the carpet off our entry way stairs and found plywood underneath. I got a quote from Brendan and wanted to go with him, but got impatient as he was booked out for about a month. We thought about doing them ourselves but I ended up getting a quote from another contractor that had availability within the week. MISTAKE! This contractor installed the oak treads with a 2.5 to 3 inch overhang. Found out that it didn't meet code and it was even unsafe! They squeaked when we walked on them and we were told to walk on the back of the tread. Ridiculous. Anyway, Brendan saved the day. Instead of putting a band aid on the situation by just installing wood underneath (that wouldn't be structurally sound) he carefully removed the oak treads and cut them to fit. He also cut and fit trim and oak risers. I had created some art work on veneer wood that I had thought about using for an artsy look and talked with Brendan about the fact that we wanted to also have oak for resale value if we well the place. He worked with me and we both decided to do the stairs in all red oak but use "carpet tape" to tape the art risers up afterward. That way I could take them down and repaint them or just enjoy the red oak at any time. He also went above and beyond and helped me cut and fit the riser veneers (because with the trim they no longer fit). He also replaced a garbage disposal and window spring that wasn't working. We've already booked him for other stuff around the house. Please, please do not make my mistake of going with someone else if he's booked out. He's worth the wait. We love him and we love our stairs. I will post pictures once I stain the stairs and put up the artsy risers ;) I would highly recommend Brendan! Oh and the total fee was LESS than the estimate! He was thoughtful, thorough, creative, professional and patient. Many projects required working across trades and Brendan did all the work himself. He listened closely to all the things my wife and I wanted and then created specifications for us to make sure it was clear. He provided accurate budgets and stuck to them. He improvised exactly where we would have wanted him to and always to good effect. Brendan was extremely reliable and the work has been without any problem. Brendan is the Best!!!! I hired him to do several projects in my condo last year. Prior to hiring him, I did get other estimates. He got me an estimate within 24 hours (instead of 2-3 weeks), was significantly less than the others (who overpriced and tried to take advantage of the fact that I'm clueless about renovations), and stayed on time and budget with his estimate. I first had him start with custom cabinetry adjustments in my kitchen to accommodate new appliances and putting new recessed lights and decorative lights in my kitchen, dining area, and bathroom. I again had him come back to do a complete master bathroom remodel, paint and place new fixtures in a guest bathroom, and remove cracked tiles on my balcony. I believe I must have sent him emails almost daily for the month prior to each job to run purchases by him, and he always took the time to respond quickly and provide me with more information and education. He had a positive, can-do attitude with my requests and never lost patience with me changing my mind. He also came up with his own creative ideas to reuse cabinetry, thus saving me money. I loved the fact that he is a licensed electrician and could do everything except plumbing. Because he works alone, the job probably took longer than hiring a crew of people, but then again, I preferred one person being careful with my home to a large crew of careless workers. He is honest and trustworthy, and I could leave him to work in my home every day without worry. He is also incredibly open to feedback and suggestions. The first job was done completely on time. The second job took longer, but only because the plumbers made huge mistakes which Brendan took extra time (over the New Year holiday) to help fix without cost, and because I ended up adding work to his original estimate. If you are looking for a hard-working, nice, respectful, creative, professional, and easy-to-work with contractor who is honest, he's your guy. I first met Brendan when he was working on a project for me through DeKorte Electric. When I found out he did other work, I hired him for several other projects. They ranged from cleaning off my roof and putting some demossing agent on the roof to installing crown moulding in my living room and dining room. One of the best things about Brendan is that he's very responsive - when I have a request, I hear back from him quickly and scheduling is generally within a reasonable time frame. He's also responsive if I have a question about the work or some tweaking needs to be done. The crown moulding project was one I'm particularly happy with. His attention to detail and the finished product were great. I've seen crown moulding projects done by other contractors that weren't nearly the quality of what Brendan did for me. Brendan just finished a project for us, and we couldn't be more satisfied. We just moved into a new home, and wanted to add a closet before the movers came to avoid the hassle of cleaning up construction dust off the furniture. We also wanted to complete a couple of other small projects. We called a few contractors for estimates - Rockstar came promptly, and provided an extremely detailed estimate. Other contractors either didn't show up to provide an estimate, or seemed to just pull a number out of a hat. When it came time to do the work, Brendan was able to complete the messy part of the project before the movers came by working evenings and weekends, and came later to finish up the remaining work. He was extremely transparent about what the work would entail, what the costs might be, and how he charges (time and materials, rather than by the project). Brendan recently installed a ceiling fan, light fixture and dimmer switch for us. These weren't simple diy jobs. The ceiling fan required installation of a junction box in the ceiling and rewiring the switch for it. The light fixture involve tearing out an existing recessed light and sealing the 8" x 8" hole before installing a junction box. The dimmer was on a 2 way gang switch. All of this required more expertise than I have, and Brendan has it. He's licensed and a journeyman electrician. He's smart, he's quick and he's clean, and his hourly rate is very reasonable. He came in substantially below his preliminary estimate. His work is first rate, and he's also very personable. You'll enjoy having him around. Brendan is on time & polite. His rates went up w/o notice, however, he did honor his previous rate. I budgeted $300 for a project, his estimate came in under that - however, the final bill was about $126 more then the estimate. He had to come back twice to fix / finish the project (unexpected). My only suggestion to Brendan would be to use a level on future projects instead of trying to "eye it out". read more
