Hot Rod Mozzarella Stick with spicy garlic Parmesan sauce
    Jeff M.

First... these are the same giant mozzarella sticks from Alphonso's The Original in West Allis (same owner). This is a collaboration he did with a friend who runs the Mac-n-cheese portion of the business. I can only speak to the Lightning Rod experience - I ordered the Hot Rod (spicy mozz stick) and it had a noticeable difference for being spicier than the original. It's a lot of cheese... while I 'can' finish it in one sitting, I'm not sure it 'should' be done in one. Haha. My friend took half of hers home. The decor of their vendor space is filled with nostalgia, plenty to look at while you wait for your order. If you haven't had a footlong mozzarella stick yet, then you should try this... at least onc

You haven't lived until you have one of their giant mozzarella sticks the Lighting Rod. It's a full pound of mozzarella.** These are the original Alphonso's sticks but at the 3rd Street Public Market. They are huge and I can't imagine finishing one alone. Makk Daddy five cheese macaroni and cheese is good but the BBQ Pork Makk is amazing. Place your order and the counter and they text you when your order is ready so you can grab your seat and any other goodies you might need from around the market. If cheese is your first love this is the place for you. And a great place to take an out of town guest for something they aren't likely to see anywhere else.

    What I ate and OMG!!!

This was the very 1st time I ever ate from there and OMG!!!! It was so incredible there Mak and Cheese is beyond anything I ever ate in my entire life. It was incredible, it's even good cold. I had some leftover and ate it the next morning. I think the most amazing thing is me showing a photo of what I ate and everyone who sees it wishes they could eat there. I live out of town and will be coming back

The bartop was jam-packed, as was the indoor seating, so we opted for an outdoor table. We were politely greeted by our server Kate, who was friendly and professional. Her wine service skills were impeccable while uncorking a bottle of Rose'. I had the Friday Fish Fry Perch and the GF had seared Ahi Blackened Tuna app. The Perch was great, and the Ahi was good also although we expected it to be more on the rare side. We enjoyed our outdoor dining event as the Midwest Summer weather was perfect!

Consistently busy over the years and for good reason. I've been here a few times and I've never been disappointed with the service or the food. It's a dark, cozy little restaurant bar but with so much character and history. Service is friendly and efficient. I love that the food I've ordered here has always exceeded my expectations with the seasonings and quality of ingredients used. Reasonably priced too! If you don't have a reservation, you may end up waiting for a table in the back area at a high top but it's a great opportunity to enjoy one of their great drinks in the meantime!

I don't drink so I can't speak to cocktails but they are a big draw as well. It had been awhile since I had stopped in, for some reason. I wanted some pancakes so I got the Crafthouse Stack with berries. They came with bourbon honey butter and maple syrup. I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the berries. Raspberries in particular can be hit and miss. These were all perfectly sweet and ripe. I had some solid coffee also. The location is a little inconspicuous but inside there are high ceilings and modern but welcoming decor. Don't miss it.

There's a good chance I'll be back in Milwaukee next year for Summerfest, and I'm looking forward to giving this place another shot. The food looked fantastic, and, honestly, the cocktails and beers we had were already worthy of a few stars. I'm hoping my next visit lives up to how good everything looked.
