This was a great store and deli, they had a large selection of deli items, meats, beer/wine, and some standard grocery store stuff. We got a couple of chicken breasts here that were HUGE and so good! The place is a bit expensive, but it's in a great location. The staff here was really friendly and I never had to wait in line to pay. read more

Yes refresh fruiting vegetables are pricey but organic choices are usually higher in price. This is the best place for sandwiches in Makawao. You can pick up one of their pre-made sandwiches or have one custom made, either way, it won't take long. Service is usually quick. Sandwiches are made with fresh, quality ingredients and are ample enough for the heartiest appetites. There are plenty of vegetarian options too. Along with sandwiches, you can get baked goods, coffee, smoothies or pick up a piece of fruit as a side. Prices are typical for upcountry and the quality of the ingredients! The perfect place to grab a picnic dinner! We got ahi poke and a vegan raw veggie wrap that was divine. My husband also tried a coconut milk carbonated beverage he's still raving about. We got a lilikoi bread pudding that was so-so. The assortment of (pricey) food and the creativity of recipes would keep me coming back if I lived nearby. I was really excited when the new caucasoids took over the rodeo general store as i looked forward to a little mini bristol farm or whole food type establishment that sold meat unlike the other organic vegan brother across from casanova (small tumeric smelling rotted kine vegetable hippy hangout*) so i went in with lots of anticipation and expectations. at first was great, new items, high end stuff i like with some gourmet things great selection of gourmet island and pacific rim. deli things were ok a little high priced but ok, but when i pay 12.99 for my favorite spinache and cranberry salad and it taste like algae on the bottom then i know there are not caring how long they keep their salads. then new management came in and started repurposing items like pound cake from costco for 6.99 for three loaves and they sold each slice for $5 such a blatant rip off of their customer base, then mozzarella balls in olive oil again from costco repackaged like truly horrid rip off, like taking a $6.99 container of cheese and placed in a smaller container with 6 balls for 5.99, really? wow, such a nasty blatant rip off, i dont mind paying 80% higher prices at whole foods but at least they dont sell rotten food. and food that has stayed in the case too long or in the heat lamp and then not tossing them out. stale croissants, donuts. sorry but the new management since 2015 sucks and doesnt seem to care about customer service. sorry but when i saw the young hispanic good lookin manager snicker and laught after i purchased his jacked priced mozarella balls i stopped shopping there. i used to love the mexican lady that worked there she made tamales i forgot her name but when that management took over and sell morning star patties for 3.99 when you can buy the whole box for 5.99 i realized they were really no customer oriented. i appreciate that there is a mini wish i was mana prices excellence and whole food variety kine store upcountry cuz we got nothing up here really, but why be so corrupt. USED TO BE GREAT. This review is mostly about the "new" service at the deli counter. Before this previously excellent place got sold (recently), there were happy, busy, and ATTENTIVE people behind the service counter. I am /(was) a regular customer for years and used to buy their very well made, delicious poke, almost daily - and it's not cheap! The recipe seems to have changed (who puts cucumbers in spicy tuna - unless trying to increase the weight without using too much fresh fish? - really a bad move). I like the "plain or "shoyu" flavor, mostly fish and as it should be - I add my own spicy sauce. Ok, so I went in there about 30 minutes ago - 1:45 pm on Friday, Oct.11th - and walked up to the service counter with a smile on my face. There was one person behind the deli case spraying oil on baking sheets with parchment paper and no one else within 20 feet, no other customers, or workers. After the spray on the parchment sheets came layered tortillas! This person was less than 6 feet away and within 35 degrees of facing me - I was impossible to miss, I'm tall. There was a bell on the counter. I usually refrain from ringing a bell when someone can plainly see me, I think it's rude not to wait a moment and let connection happen, impatience is ugly. This person ignored me, completely. I waited for almost 2 whole minutes, not one glance, one "just a moment please", or "hello, I'll be right with you" - total disdain - and it was obvious, this person either doesn't like his job or....people...(?). It was definitely not personal and really rude. I stopped smiling and turned, walked away and left. Not a peep from deli guy. I'll go somewhere else and buy my food and snacks from now on. read more

I can not get their Ahi poke bowl out of my head! The ahi was delicious! I also had them add some ocean salad to it with the white rice. They also make fresh gourmet sandwiches with alfalfa sprouts which are really good for $8.99 plus $1 to add cheese. I will keep going to this store! read more

As strange as this sounds, my partner and I faced some sort of "ism"as we checked out. Strange. Now that I am home, I will complete this above cryptic review. Place looked decent we went to the deli counter ordered our sandwich, walked around got some chips, sodas and went to checkout. I was standing behind my partner (very closely, life couples do at times) who is of Pacific Island decent - I'm a white mutt. I saw the the Hydroflask display walked over to look. I heard the transaction being completed, I turned around and the person with long blondish Stevie Nicks looking hair behind the counter saw me pick up the bag and screamed "Are YOU with HIM!?!?!" as if a mixed race gay couple in the Makawao area was the most implausible thing ever. She THEN grabbed the bag out of my hands. Where was I going to go -- run with our sandwiches to Hana? She was rude, nasty and should never be working with the general public. BTW owners, I have family that has lived a stones throw from your place of business for over two decades and one of my family members owns a healing business mere steps from your door. They are all aware of what took place. You and your staff need to learn what love, compassion and kindness is -- or please just sell out and move. read more

What would we do with out Rodeo General in Makawao..thank you! We order sandwiches regularly for Pi'iholo Ranch lunch horseback rides. The sandwiches and salads are always freshly made and our guests love them. The deli staff are always willing to accommodate gluten free, vegetarian and vegen needs of our guests. This year we purchased the Thanksgiving Dinner, all inclusive, from them and it was a real hit with our family. From the Turkey, to Gravy to the green beans, it was all perfectly prepared. Best place to start a day trip to Hana! We visited the Cowboy town of Makawao early yesterday morning for picnic supplies and a donut on a stick (across the street, different review). The sammiches in the deli display immediately grabbed my attention. $9 for a large, freshly made sammiche that was way way better than a Subway or Togo copy and the fresh breads and meats, I had to try all four types. Luckily there were four of us but we still had them cut in half. Now the Italian, Roast Beef and Turkey club are great, but the winner hands down (hands full?) was the Chicken Pesto. Complimented our picnic with three of the salads, a kale and cabbage, a rice, and a bean....mouth-watering thinking about them again. Good beer selection and very friendly people! We may need another visit before our trip ends. read more

Everybody who works seems to be polite, friendly and cheerful. Grocery prices are high, even for Maui, but there is an awesome deli counter serving excellent, healthful and tasty food. A great cup of coffee at a decent price, too. Makawao wouldn't be Makawao without the Rodeo store. read more

I'm over it. I live in Makawao, have forever and I just can't deal with the rude people who work here. Otherwise, you'll find what you need. But you won't find aloha from 90% of the employees. The other 10% are super nice. But it's just gotten to the point where I will drive the extra distance to get groceries because the employees are just a-holes. Example (if you need examples): went in today said hello to the cashier. No response, just a dirty look. Got some groceries, went to the counter to pay and the cashier ignored me and another cashier came up and waited on the guy who just showed up to the second counter (after me). Finally, first cashier (dread-lock guy) waited on me and didn't say thanks, or any other thing, just looked around the room as he handed me a receipt. I wanted to throw it at him. I don't understand this kind of behavior, but I'm done with it. Go to Pukalani Superette if you need fast groceries. They are always nice, no attitude. Hopefully the Rodeo General will find a new owner who actually cares about running a business and representing the sweet town of Makawao with Aloha. read more
