Rodeo is a solid Mexican restaurant in Houghton. The burritos are great (I ordered for pick-up twice in one weekend I liked it so much). Very friendly when you call to place an order and their online ordering works well too. Quick turn around from order to pickup which rocks too. The only reason I gave them 4 stars is because I would have loved to see the contents of my burrito mixed up a little more so I got a little bit of everything in each bite but overall was still great! P.S. the bathroom has some fun quirks in the form of stickers . Check it out if you're so inclined. read more

first time here and i just had the blandest taco bowl of my life...chicken was extremely dry and had absolutely no seasoning whatsoever, and they have very limited on topping options...they don't even have tomatoes. will not be returning. read more

As a couple of alumni back in town for the weekend, we were honestly hoping the Ambassador or Library would be open but no luck. Turned out definitely OK because yelp steered me here and lunch was quite good! I can't pass up nachos so did mine up with pork, mild salsa and guacamole. Could've used twice the amount of salsa but it was very good, tangy and fresh and between that and the guacamole I was quite happy with the decision. One of the kiddos got tacos; tasty but way over-cheesed! Burrito was "fine" per the hubs (I don't think he's in a talkative mood)! Clever use of a small space with dining in options - just don't bring a large group! Plenty of vegetarian choices. Drink options are out of a cooler but there's a large Gatorade cooler available for tap water too! Great addition to one of my favorite towns. read more

Ok so this place was good with fresh organic and certified ingredients, appeared clean and staff was cool and polite! Cost was average for the times and near Michigan tech college. As per the times this is only doing carry out at this point! Plenty of parking but it is a bit tricky to find for your 1st trip there so pay attention and drive properly. read more

This was one of the very few restaurants open on Independence Day, July 4th. It is a takeout place, with no license - who can eat Mexican food without Mexican beer? But, there is a local food market within 100 yards that was open too. So the beer problem was solved. We took our food back to our AirBNB to eat. I really enjoyed it. Perhaps my gratitude over having some food bled over into my perception of the food quality? In retrospect, it was certainly a blessing to find it and overall, a great experience. I would eat there again if back in Houghton, MI. read more

For being pretty far from Mexico, this place hits the spot. It is VERY clean and has very fresh ingredients. I wouldn't say it is authentic by any means but for the U.P. it's a great alternative to a chipotle. They are also very quick! Ok rating them 4 stars because of the cleanliness and fresh ingredients. "Turn at the Flagstar," is how you get to it. It's a bit hidden over by Jim's grocery store, but it's worth the hunt. Their burritos are legendary amongst our group and their tacos are also amazing. The price is really good and you get a good volume. Be sure to leave room for the key lime pie (I don't understand how it's offered with Mexican food, but it completes the meal). read more

We stopped here on a recent trip to visit family in the area. It's just a small strip mall place, but I was quite impressed. I had the Braised Pork Burrito with Veggies and Guacamole (extra charge). It was very good. Tons of tender flavorful meat with Rice, Beans and the extras mentioned before. The others in our party had the Chicken Burrito and Tacos and were also happy with their food. The space is really tight, especially for a wheelchair user, but the food was good enough for us to keep coming back. read more

I have a slight addiction with this place, because their food is so good and easy to pick up whenever (except Sunday and Monday, when they're closed). Not many places in houghton have spicy food, which is a must for me, so I go here at least a few times a month. I always get their pork burrito, freshly made chips and salsa, and a side of rice and beans. Their burritos are huge so it's at least two meals for me, which is well worth it for their low prices. I should probably branch out and try other things on their menu, but I love my order so much that I never get sick of it. I've heard from friends that their posole and burrito bowls are amazing as well. The staff is very friendly and quick, I've never had a bad experience ordering from here. It says on google that they have a dine-in option, but they only have a couple tables outside to sit at so I wouldn't count on it. Other than that, this place is perfect! Keep up the work. read more

Mediocre burritos that are over priced. The last time I got takeout they forgot my daughters quesadilla and she was devastated. I called them back and they took down my info and said that we could get a free one the next time I come in since I did not want to drive the 30 minutes round trip that night to fix there mistake. I tried a burrito today and went with the Barbacoa beef (shredded beef). While the burrito was large you have to pay separately for the things that make a burrito great. Example: $$ for Guacamole $$ for sautéed vegetables and even extra $ for sour cream. A basic beef burrito was over $12.00. I don't mind paying more for a good meal but that was not the case here. The meat was not shredded and it was extremely tough. It could have used a few more hours simmering to break down the meat and make it more palatable. Dry. I can't count how many times we've gone there- it's our go to. Everything is delicious- I alternate between the beef tacos, nachos, burrito bowl. I prefer the mild salsa for the flavor, my husband gets the XXX hot stuff and raves about it. My favorite restaurant in Houghton, and the best quality Mexican food I've had. Their ingredients are always fresh and quality, such as their white chunk cheddar cheese, brown rice, quality meats, avocados, etc. The owner was very knowledgable about specific dietary considerations, such gluten related sensitivities. The menu is very simple, but makes up for it with its supreme quality. My favorite dish is the grilled chicken burrito with added guacamole, extra veggies, Greek yogurt, and their hot salsa. Best takeout Mexican food for hundreds of miles --- Rodeo is good food cooked by good people. You want to support a local business like this as much as possible. Sure the prices are higher than other options, but fresh food is worth a few extra bucks. I recommend the salad. You will not find a better served salad in le Keweenaw. And then order the cake because holy wah! Pistachio cheesecake sandwiched between rich chocolate cake with velvety chocolate ganache... The slice is big enough to split. The only drawback to this place is the sparse seating. They utilize what space they do have but for some Rodeo might be best enjoyed at home, or a picnic at Lake Superior. read more

I would suggest one thing. Marinade the chicken Latino style so it makes it more tender and less dry. I wish they would go for a higher volume of customers with a lower price instead of this business plan. In SF's Mission District where commercial rent is high, I pay $6 for an excellent burrito; -burrito lacks ingredients, like onions and cilantro, that you'd expect. At least the amount of salsa you'd expect to give it the veggie content you'd expect from Mexican fare; -biggest negative, when I asked for a cup of water I was told 'no,' that I had to buy a bottle of water. Hands down the best Mexican food in the area. Our first visit was a happy one. I ordered the veggie burrito and my son got the beef tacos (corn), both to go. Both of us enjoyed our meals. The ingredients were fresh. However, I think next time I would order the burrito bowl instead of the burritos. The tortillas were less than stellar, grocery store ones. You know the tough, chewy kind? Maybe try flipping it on a skillet? We ordered their hot salsa, which while tasty was yooper-hot and nowhere near the hot of real Mexican salsa. Very good! My husband and I are both from California and consider ourselves Mexican food connoisseurs. (IE: We are picky about our Mexican food). But this place is the best around. They make the tacos almost like real Mexico tacos, we were shocked! We went in the first week it was open, I sure hope they keep up with the original way they made the food. I eat here every time I'm in the area, sometimes twice a day. Sure it's pricey, but if inexpensive food is all you want, go to Taco Bell. You get what you pay for. Fresh, clean tasting ingredients that you can discern in each bite. A salsa bar would be cool, but I usually eat on the go and grab chips and salsa from the grocery store, then I can grab a beer or a coke (Rodeo does sell beverages, not alcoholic though) to round out my meal. Then I eat in my car, isolated and insulated from the rest of humanity, free to think my own thoughts, unencumbered by the somewhat lane strip mall feel of Rodeo. I always get the Pork. This is on my "must visit" list when I'm in Houghton (aka my new Ambassador). The menu is simple, but they have all their bases covered. I order a veggie burrito or bowl, and the veggies, salsa, and guacamole (all freshly prepared) make it incredible. As a vegan--a picky one, at that--I very much appreciate that they can tell me exactly what goes into their food, and that they are willing to accommodate my special requests. I will say that I have never been disappointed with their food. However, I was in there a couple weeks ago and was harassed by one of the cooks. I do have a medical condition and was not wearing a mask, but the food was already placed on a table and pre paid, plus plexy glass all around and more than 6 feet apart. The guy at the front was very nice and told me where my food was and didn't say a thing. This cook was extremely rude, was yelling at me and said she doesn't care if I have a medical condition and told me to leave. She refused to give me her name. I emailed Rodeo and they never cared to email me back to resolve the situation. I am not one to complain, let alone contact the company, as I work in the restaurant business. BUT, This was, by far, the worst service I have ever received probably in my whole life. As I told close friends about it, they had the EXACT same situation happen. Needless to say, I can count on two hands how many people will not be back because of the way we were treated by the same employee. It's a shame, we went there often. But we will take our business elsewhere, where the business actually cares to resolve situations like this and where we will not be harassed by a cook. I contacted them so they could sold the issue and not lose customers, but they clearly don't care. From the outside you would never know the delicious Mexican food found here! The inside is very cute and bright, a nice contrast from the cold and dark tundra around it. My dad a friend and I came to the rodeo after a friend recommended it and we will definitely be back when we're in Houghton. My dad and I had the pork while my friend had the chicken we all though our meals were delicious!! The tacos were so delicious and had just the right amount of meat, cheese and cabbage. We also got the guacamole which came with plenty chips. The mild salsa was amazing for me who doesn't enjoy really hot food, although my dad who likes spicier food said he would probably get the hot salsa the next time. As a person from down south who usually eats Qdoba or Chipotle I was pleasantly surprised when I found and ate at this place. I had a beef burrito w/ quac and sour cream, and it was absolutely delicious. Better than Qdoba or Chipotle. However, I had to play extra for guac and sour cream. Disappointing. I walk in thinking this place will be your authentic Mexican restaurant.....but Tis not! And that's OK! The have a simple limited menu: choose between beef, chicken, and pork. Select if you want a burrito, bowl, or tacos. The offer different levels of heat with your salsa, awesome. I tried one of each, taco stylee. They were all delicious, but in order of favorite: pork, beef, chicken, respectively. They come with a nice white shred cheese and cabbage, squirt of lime, and then the salsa of your choice. We are big fans of Chipotle back home, and while not the same, The Rodeo also uses fresh ingredients that don't upset my stomach.
