Rods Alaskan Guide Service was amazing! I hardly write reviews but I was very impressed! The family owned business was so warm and welcoming, including their dog Trout who is trained to close the door when guest leave it open. They provide clean coats, gloves, bibs, boots and gaiters! The helmets are UV sanitized between guest and are heated. We went snow mobility in -33 degrees going at speeds up to 40mph and I felt warm and comfortable. Rodney Junior was out tour guide. He was so sweet and took stops to make sure we were warm and he took pictures of us. I also went ice fishing. His brother Cody was our guide. They have wood cabins in the lake with a fire furnace to keep us warm. They serve hot chocolate and cooked the fish we caught with an Amish butter the family had shipped from New York. Cody also grilled us reindeer sausages and provided condiments. There is an outhouse to use with toilet paper and hand sanitizer is provided in the cabin. We went to Rods for dog sledding with Laura and she was the BEST! Her team was just the smartest and strongest bunch of good girls and good boys. She loves them and they work so hard for her. It was -22° that day but all the cold weather gear kept us nice and toasty. We learned so much about the dogs and how they are trained. She made the outing so enjoyable, time just flew by and the frigid temps didn't seem to matter at all. The following day we went back to Rod's for snowmobiling with Josh. He was so patient with those of us who had never driven one (our entire group). We are all senior citizens (70s) and it was easy to do. This was an 11° day and the heated helmets and all the gear they provided were just perfect. All the staff is knowledgeable and efficient. A the privilege to enjoy an aurora viewing with the sled dogs. If you get a chance and it is available...book it. Regardless of seeing the aurora, the experience of mushing with the dog's was incredible. We had Dina as our guide, and while it was her last guiding adventure (she is moving onto the coast for a change of scenery), she made the experience memorable. She took the time to talk about her team and really felt comfortable that we were going to be taken care of. She strapped us in and off we went. We took a break about 30-40 mins during the ride. The aurora just started coming out behind us. We then arrived at the fishing cabin. We unloaded and warmed up in the hut. The reindeer sausage was nice touch. We got a chance to see the aurora and stayed for about an hour or so. We then headed back and she let the dogs run. A great experience to see what they really do. Even if it is overcast or you miss the aurora, the experience of running with the dogs was truly incredible. It is a bummer that you won't be able to request Dina anymore; however, this place was a class act and I have a feeling that Rod will ensure that her legacy lives on. read more

My sister and I did the "ultimate combo" and spread out our activities over a few days while in Alaska...Every time we finished one activity, we'd think it was the best...only to then be somehow topped by the next. Great snowmobiling! However, unfortunately supporting their snowmobiling also supports the inhuman conditions for the dog sledding. The dogs are very skinny, treated unkindly, and do not look like winter sled dogs. It is unacceptable and would not recommend supporting ANY portion of this business until dog conditioning are improved to the utmost level. read more

We started our day with the 2 hour snow machine tour. Our guide Victoria was the greatest. We then did the 1 hour dog sled tour. Our dog musher Emma was wonderful. We finished out our day with the 5 hour Aurora lights and ice fishing adventure with Tim as our tour guide. He was the greatest host. We talked for hours and learned so much. Ryan did a great job of orienting our group to snowmobiles and led us on a fun jaunt through the forest. I picked it up a little faster than others, so he let me bring up the rear. That way, I could slow down and then speed up -- have a little more fun out of it, you know? I had a bit too much fun and pitched the machine over in a snowbank. Ryan checks the group every few minutes, so he noticed I wasn't there, came back, and taught me how to tamp out the skis and right the machine. We caught back up to the group, to whom he gave some extra time to make up for my delay. The gear at Rod's is excellent. The jacket was worth $1,000. The boots are air-bladdered arctic Army sniper issue. The helmet is heated, as are the snowmobile handlebars and even throttle toggle. If you want to have fun and not worry about anything, Rod and Ryan are the way to go. ***EDITED TO ADD*** I enjoyed the experience at Rod's so much that I came back a couple days later for a dogsled tour. My guide was Jimmy, and the first bit of the tour was just him talking my ear off about his dogs. (The guides each have their own sled team that they bring to Rod's, and that come home with them.) Jimmy LOVES these dogs. When we stopped after a little bit for him to take pictures of me with the team, the first thing Jimmy did was take a portrait of each dog, solo. Any concern anyone has ever had that the dogs aren't happy or aren't treated well...it's so far from reality that I would prescribe you hop in Jimmy's sled and actually experience it. You get to learn about Jimmy's dogs, Alaskan huskies in general, and dogsledding and its history. After the narrated part, when it's just the sound of paws and sled, you get to appreciate the stark, brutal beauty of the place. The dogs really do love what they're doing. They're obsessed with it. They're completely chill until they pick up that a run is about to start. Then they start yelping and jumping and pulling. They WANT to go. It's as if they're saying please can we go JESUS PLEASE CAN WE GO ALREADY PLEASE COME ON. Jimmy also shared that the company treats its employees well. It was just a deeply positive experience, all around. Booked an Ultimate Combo for my husband and I. 100% would do it all over again!!! While you can book all 3 activities in one day, we decided to take a more relaxed pace and split up ice fishing on a Tuesday and snow mobile & dog sledding on a Friday. Ice fishing with Trevor was a nice relaxing activity to do on our first day in town. There were a few of us who had never been fishing (myself included) so Trevor took extra time to educate us on the proper way to use a fishing pole, bait, and about the fish in the lake. The heated cabins are definitely a plus, but it was a nice enough day to try fishing outside on the lake where my husband and I spent most of our time. Trevor was a great host! He shared stories, cheered for us when we caught fish, and prepared delicious reindeer sausage and the fish that we caught that day. Snow mobile and dog sledding are in the same location (but separate from ice fishing). Before any activities even started, we were super impressed by the efficiency of Rod's whole operation from check-in to preparing you with the proper gear. We had our own boots and snow pants, but still opted to use their gear especially since we'd be out for a total of 3 hours. The bathrooms are super clean too (to me, one of the highest levels of customer service). Our 2-hour snow mobile tour was led by Victoria. She started out with safety and then sent us out on some practice laps (lucky for me who was nervous at first, but quickly got the hang of things). Our actual tour went through the woods, past the Alaskan pipeline, and onto the lake where Tori let us loose! It was exhilarating!!!! I also appreciated that we stopped along the trail where we could get some photos and take in the scenery instead of just whizzing by. I also have to mention that Tori's dog Trout hangs out in the Welcome Center, among a couple others. Shout out to Trout for shutting the door! If I had to choose, dog sledding was my favorite activity. We were lucky enough to get paired with Matt Hall, a competitive musher who just finished the Iditarod a few weeks prior. For someone who lives off grid most of the year, Matt is extremely personable and we learned so much about racing, the preparation that goes into it, and the doggos. It's apparent how passionate he is about his dogs and making sure that they are happy and well-cared for. Our 1-hour ride was split up where we each got to sit in the sled, then each of us got to ride the runners in the back with Matt. My favorite part was interacting with the doggos at the rest points. Glad we booked with them! We booked 2 excursions with them - snowmobiling at 10AM (which we showed up late for but they politely still took us after we called and said we would be running late), and then 2PM for ice fishing on Chena Lakes Recreation Center Boat Launch. We are from Los Angeles and don't know anything about the cold but wanted to have a good time while we were here. Annie was super polite and knowledgeable- she even told us the perfect weather conditions for seeing the Northern Lights from our hot tub at our Airbnb in Fairbanks. Our snowmobiling guide, (forgive me I think his name is Ryan) was knowledgable, nice and even took photos and videos of us. He stopped and showed us where the River had frozen over and how badgers eat the tree trunks. Book the snowmobiling, it was fun! They give you coats, gloves, helmets and boots - so you don't have to worry about the right gear. Then for ice fishing, Clarence was our guide - SUPER fun stories he had, he gave us hot cocoa, reindeer sausage and even let me try some samples of another sausage/meat. He had a lot of knowledge about ice fishing, kept things fun and there was never a dull moment. I have to admit I was worried I would be bored for 4 hours fishing through an icey hole in the ground but you're inside a hut thats VERY warm. If you want to drink, BYOB for my drinking folks and DO NOT TOUCH THEIR VINTAGE FIRE STOVE. :) A great time. What an awesome adventure and well worth the money. This was both my husband and myselfs first time in Alaska and riding a snow mobile. I was scared to ride alone so I doubled up with my husband. After getting fitted with warm gear, which included a heated helmet and training on how to ride; we were set off on our guided tour. It was so exciting! We rode over a frozen river and got a chance to see the open Alaskan terrain, they even stopped to let everyone get pics. The guide even assisted us with making sure everyone got a pic of themselves on their snow mobiles. It was also nice that it was a small group, which allowed for us to have a better experience. The pricing was not over the top and when I'm back in Fairbanks area, we'll be back for another ride. The only down side was, we didn't get to see any wildlife. However, it was the middle of winter and not the fault of the staff. Getting to see some wildlife is all the reason to come back for another ride. read more

We first started inside the cabin, Ro also opened up fish holes outside so we could go outside which had higher chances of catching a fish near the shore. Real nice to have the option to be in or out. She prepared reindeer hotdogs for us and we also got to eat the fish we caught. I was in a group of 4 and 3 of us caught one, but there were many others who didn't catch one. Of course it is understandable that a catch is not guaranteed and my friend who didn't catch one still enjoyed their time!! Highly recommend and you're lucky if you get Ro she's amazing! read more

We just finished our ice fishing trip with Ro. We had an awesome time! I was with my two friends and my 15 yr old son. Between the 4 of us, we caught 18 fish. Wow! The highlight of my trip to Alaska was the ice fishing and snowmobile tour with Rod. The first day, we did the 6 hour ice fishing trip. Rod texted/called us beforehand to confirm and send us specific driving directions. We were able to get fishing licenses directly from them at the start of the tour. Chuck was our guide for the day and took great care of us. The group of 4 of us caught almost 30 fish! We each got to eat our first catch of the day, freshly grilled by Chuck. Chuck even let us try our hand at drilling the fishing holes! While we were enjoying our time fishing on the lake, Rod was scouting the snowmobile trails to ensure that they were safe (clear of debris and had enough snow) for us to ride the next day. Despite that, he made a point to pop in a couple times to check in on the fishing. The following day we met Rod at his snowmobile cabin where he was gracious enough to lend us extra gear to ensure we would stay warm throughout our tour. His explanation of safety and operation of the snowmobiles was both thorough and easy to understand. After a couple minutes of test runs to ensure we felt comfortable, he led us on an hour adventure. Rod made sure to check on us regularly throughout the tour and paced the speed based on our comfort. He even made a point to stop whenever he spotted local wildlife (several moose in our case)! His entire tour was very personal and made us feel at home in the snow despite it being our first time on a snowmobile. Overall, it seems like Rod runs a tight operation and pays a lot of attention to the comfort and expectations of his clients tailoring each trip for a true Alaskan outdoor experience! read more

*Booked packages the week of Jan 16, 2019* We originally booked the aurora ice fishing package but had such a great experience with them that we booked a snowmobile tour for later that week. These guys are a true gem in the area. They are a quality company and we can't thank them enough for the amazing experience. We travel a lot and have come across some questionable tour companies in the past, so rest assured these guys are the right people to go with. Aurora ice fishing: We caught a bunch of king salmon and had John as our fishing guide. John was incredibly friendly and knowledgeable. He also had some great insight into Alaska for us(this was our first visit to Alaska). The norther lights can be hit or miss depending on weather, but the remote location lends itself perfectly for a chance to see them. We snacked on Reindeer sausage and John prepped and cooked the freshly caught salmon once we had enough for everyone. The fishing cabin is also easy to get to from Fairbanks and they provided detailed instructions via email beforehand on how to get there. Very much appreciated and great communication right off the bat. Side note, we didn't lose cell service driving to the fishing cabins so we just used google maps on our phones, but if you'd rather use their directions you should print them ahead of time. Snowmobile tour: We met Rodney(Rod's son) at their main cabin which is a few minutes from the lake and fishing cabins. We went mid week and ended up having a 1 hour private tour since no one else booked that time slot. Rodney was exceptional. He took us through the woods and surrounding area as well as the frozen lake. If you have time or want to do some snowmobiling, do with them. The machines were in great shape and we had a blast going full throttle across large patches of frozen lakes and straightaways. These guys know what they are doing and they run a great guiding business. Coming from NYC, we love great customer service and Rods Alaskan Guide Service is definitely top on our list if/when we visit Alaska's again. read more
