Mark's complete rewiring of our 1929 house has been an ongoing problem. First he had to come back and fix a lot of his own work as we discovered problems with the wiring (switches that didn't work, dead outlets, etc.). When the next batch of malfunctioning switches and lights became obvious, my husband was so frustrated with trying to deal with Mark that we paid another electrician to hook things up correctly. Now we're on round three of fixing his bad and nonexistent work! Mark had added a switch that he said would be all ready to go when we found a fixture we wanted to add to a room. This weekend we were ready to hang the new light, and we found that the wires hanging out of the ceiling and the wires in the switch box were NOT CONNECTED TO EACH OTHER. Mark, I see that your website says satisfaction guaranteed. Would you like to compensate us for the billable hours we've paid to other people to fix and complete your work? Sorry this is completely negative, but this has been a ridiculous situation. Mark is a personable guy and that made us think everything was going fine. It would have been nice to see you apologize and seem to CARE that you had to come back and fix stupid mistakes (not attaching wires securely enough to turn on the light, for one!). Easy to work with and knows his trade, however, failed to install timer switch as discussed, drilled holes for conduit much larger than needed, installed outdoor outlets under water hose and job exceeded quote. Tried to contact Mark for the last two weeks to finish the job correctly and install additional light fixtures with no response. Thought I had found an electrician I could use on a regular basis. Made an appointment on a Thursday to try to locate a short in our wiring. He said he would see me Monday at 4pm and asked me to text my name, location and time to confirm. He acknowledged my text with time and place to meet. Monday, 4pm our scheduled appointment came and went with a total no show. Wow. I expect this kind of thing in Santa Cruz county, but based on the reviews here I thought Roemke would be an exception. And after driving the 90 minutes from SF! I had 1940 knob and tube, needed entire house rewired; sparks from outlets, flickering lights. Asked 1500 FB friends for referral. Called 4, no return call from 3, Earle's, from Oakland, was only one who responded. Said he would be here before noon; never showed, never called. Flustered and ready to go up in flames. THEN...I got Roemke's number. Was expecting more flakiness, probably another no show since they were in Santa Cruz, and coming to Richmond annex would be quite a haul. Glory be! Received call that crew would be here in 90 minutes. I'll be damned if they didn't show up exactly on time! Totally professional, friendly...5 guys snapped into action, working like a synchronized drill team. I was in awe. They continued diligently until the whole house was rewired, 11 hrs. later. I was expecting a few days and a tremendous mess. SURPRISE, SURPRISE, SURPRISE!!! No mess...in fact, a few areas were cleaner than before! They must have thought I was kooky as I couldn't stop spouting out effusive praise and appreciation...I do believe I heard a choir of angels singing "hallelujah" also :oD In this day of ambivalence, incompetence, poor quality and bad attitudes, my faith has been restored. Mark and crew are the exception--a model of how a business should be run. To summarize: I paid Mark $8,000 to do a job, the city inspectors found that his work was not to code, and he disrespectfully refused to fix his work. Looking back, the issue with Roemke Electric is that they don't take pride in their work. They didn't respect me, and didn't respect my house. They tried to get the job done with minimal inconvenience to Roemke and didn't care that I would be living with their work for years to come. I originally found Mark on Yelp and called him because of the 5 star Yelp reviews. I didn't consider that many of those jobs weren't inspected by an expert to ensure they were done in accordance to standard electrical practices and building codes. I asked Mark to bring my electrical up to code as part of a larger permitted remodel. This included replacing my panel, rewiring the kitchen, installing a dozen new lights, etc. Questionable Billing: We agreed on a fixed price. When it took his crew longer than he expected to complete the work, he converted the bill to hourly (without running it by me) to collect a higher payment for the same scope of work. The bill details included: - Rework on the range circuit that was improperly installed multiple times. - Phone support at the full rate for an inspection after he refused to have someone there to walk the inspection. Josh talked to me while at another job. Double billing? - Shopping for ladders. I overheard Ben complaining to Josh how long he had to wait for a HD employee to get something off of a high shelf. Apparently, I was expected to pay for him to stand around. Shortcuts: One example is when Josh explained to me how he was purposely using nebulous labels in the panel to prevent the inspector from finding issues. Each of the 3 inspectors I spoke with told me I should be using a licensed electrician, thinking I hadn't done so based on what they saw (one didn't believe me and provided a website to lookup Mark's license). For example, Roemke put arc fault breakers on GFCI circuits, but neglected to put them on the circuits where they're required. The panel had to be completely rewired for "phasing and multiwire" issues that both the inspectors and the new electrician I hired spotted within minutes of taking off the panel cover. Terrible communication: Both with me and among themselves. When I called, I had no idea if it would be answered or whether I'd get a call back at all. Roemke punched 3" diameter holes in the ceiling because Ben marked up the ceiling to position canned lights without bothering to use a stud finder and didn't clean up the markings after they realized those spots wouldn't work. Another guy came in later, saw the marks, and started cutting. They unnecessarily marked up my ceilings in two rooms. When I asked why they didn't just lightly use pencils that I could erase, I was told that they expected me to repaint the ceilings afterwards. Seriously? I was way too nice and paid more than the originally agreed upon price in order to reach what Mark claimed to be his break-even point. I paid prior to final inspection and Mark assured me that he would personally come out if needed. When final inspection was done, it was a mess. They found issues with everything they touched not meeting code (including the range plug that had been reinstalled twice). He charged me for running a bunch of new kitchen lines, yet the inspector found the two kitchen receptacle lines were the original (non-dedicated) lines. The kitchen lights were on the old circuit. What did they actually run? While I do have more circuits in my panel, three of them didn't control anything. I reached out to Mark and offered him the opportunity to complete all the items on the inspection plus the additional items that were outside the original scope of work to offset the loss of having to come out to fix his work. He agreed, and I emailed him the inspection notices. He then ignored me for a week. He finally texted me, "You can find someone else," knowing full well that he was in breach of our contract by not completing work to code and that it's extremely difficult to find an electrician that will complete someone else's botched job. I spent an hour over the phone with a city inspector trying to understand all the issues, and half a day calling electricians trying to find one that would be willing to take on this job. I had to pay another electrician for two and a half days of work to clean up the mess Mark left me with. I spent half a day cleaning up the damage/markings made to my ceilings. I spent another day doing drywall work because his crew used a sawzall on drywall, destroying the cutout piece and making a huge jagged cutout. They should've used a drywall knife and left the cutout for me to slip back into place after they were done - that would've saved me 10 hours of work. I went out of my way to be courteous at every misstep, and am wishing I hadn't trusted Yelp to find Mark in the first place. Thank you Mark for a great life lesson! read more

This is my second review for Roemke Electric. Although our experience this time is a bit different from the first, Still 5 star worthy in the end. We called in to get a quote for some work we wanted to be done on our home. Mark set up a time to come look at the job. He came out and got us a quote right away. We had gotten this quote before the holidays, so we waited to after the first of the year to schedule the job. We set up the day and time and Mark said he would send one of his employees to do the job. Unfortunately here is where things went a little sideways. On the date and time of the appointment, no one showed up. We figured with traffic and all they might be running a bit late, so we waited. Still no one, so we sent a text to see what was going on. No reply. We waited a bit and text once again with no reply. Next, we tried calling and the call went straight to a full voice mailbox. We then sent another text asking if we needed to reschedule. Finally, we received a reply saying "sorry, I think maybe he forgot". I understand that things happen, and we had such great service from them in the past, so we asked about rescheduling again. We got no reply for the rest of the night. In the morning we sent a text asking if we should just get with another vendor and we got a text back that said "ok" at this point I was not very happy. Later that afternoon I was considering posting a negative review here on Yelp, but instead, I decided to first call and try to speak with the owner Mark. We talked and he explained that he was doing a job, when we had been texting him and calling him, that was in an area with no reception. When he did get all of our text he tried to reply but they wouldn't go through. He was very apologetic for his employee who had gotten lost ( it is hard to find our house) and for not getting the text. He said he wanted to make it right and that he would come out right now and do the job himself and at significantly discounted price. Mark was at my house within 30 minutes to do the job. He and the guy he brought with him were super professional, super personable and hammered out the job quite quickly. He needed on a part to finish the job so he returned the next day and finished the work. Let us just say the final bill was shocking low/nonexistent. The customer service by Mark and action we took to make this right is just unheard of these days. I wholeheartedly recommend them to anyone who needs work done. There is not enough I can say to show how satisfied with the outcome, but I can say I will always remember what Mark did to take care of his customer. 5stars A+++++++ read more

I hired Roemke Electric to rewire my entire house in Santa Cruz, They came highly recommended by a friend of a friend. They where fantastic! They had great suggestions I would not have thought of. They did it on time and on budget, now that is rare these days. When you meet Mark the owner you will see what I mean. I am having them change my pool house and granny quarters over to solar. We lost power in several of our outlets this week, and so I came to Yelp to research local electricians. Roemke Electric sounded very good and when I called they quickly set up an appointment that was convenient for me. The owner, Mark, arrived a few minutes early (wow, what a surprise in Santa Cruz!) and turned out to be an excellent troubleshooter. He discovered that there were two GFIs conflicting with each other. Since he resolved this issue so quickly, I mentioned another area where three outlets hadn't been operable for some time. (Awhile back a different electrician had been unsuccessful in resolving the issue.) We didn't really use those particular outlets.. but were concerned that there may be a safety hazard. Well, to make a long story short, Mark resolved that issue... and then repaired an outdoor outlet, too! Mark was punctual, professional, very knowledgeable, and willingly explained things to me in terms I could understand... definitely a real find in this area! This is the guy is want in your corner, honest, genuine, and experienced. I would never let anyone else work on my homes electrical system. When I purchased my home Mark came out with his crew and installed all my sensor lights through my property, lights inside my garage, electrical outlets to my outside sump pump, completed the electrical to my studio, amongst the many times I had him switch out outlets and dimmers. Mark (the owner) and Shane came out to my house to install some new outlets and a new circuit. They were very nice, and did the job quickly and professionally. Here's the best part though: I got several quotes from other local electricians before going with Roemke. Mark did the work for (no kidding) less than *half* the cost of the other guys. One quote came in at around $350. Roemke did the work for $167. I'm not sure how that's even possible, but I'm not complaining. Called Roemke Electric based on all his good reviews on here. I was not disappointed! Because we have a very high power bill at my house, we wanted someone to come and figure out what was going on. I called and he scheduled for that friday, which was not only the following day, but a holiday! I was happily surprised he was willing to work that day. Mark was on time, friendly, and quick. He knew all the electric breaker boxes by name and model and knew the reliability histories of the different brands (a fun/useful thing to know about!). He deemed our boxes in good repair, but he found a couple things that were on that shouldn't be, and that was why we called him! He also gave great information. Well, I waited 4 months thinking that I would get over the bad feelings that I had about the situation that occurred right before thanksgiving...but it didn't pass...so hopefully this review will help save someone else some grief. Our relationship with mark and roemke electric started earlier, in april 2012, when they came out and did some "rough in"work for a kitchen remodel. The guys did a good job and I had been quoted a price of $1200-1300 for the work performed at this time and then we would pay for the finish work when that time came. I had to leave for work a couple of hours before they were finished and my wife would pay them that day when they finished. When I returned home I found that my wife had been charged over $1800 for the work performed. The reason??? They had charged her $75/hr x 3 workers (mark, his journeyman, and a fairly new apprentice...who cleaned up for the other 2 all day) I talked with mark about it and told him that I had no problem paying him that rate, but that I would NEVER had agreed to pay an apprentice and a laborer that wage...with the original quote it was certainly never mentioned...except that I had told him I could't believe they would be able to do the work for $75/hr (meaning all of them together)...I was NEVER, at that time, corrected about the price. We came to an agreement that mark would owe us a credit that would be put toward the finish work, when that time would come. We finished the remodel in early November and hoped to get the finish electric completed before the holidays. Called mark and discussed what was left to be done. I was told SPECIFICALLY (made sure that I asked this time, since I knew there would likely be unexplained grey area) that I would receive the agreed upon credit, would NOT be charged a markup on the needed supplies and would be charged the contractor rate $65/hr instead of the regular rate. One worker would come out and the job "shouldn't take that long" and that everything would be finished prior to end of day. When job was done, I would receive an estimate on the next job. No show with no call the first day...finally got ahold of mark at 5:00pm and was told that he had a major problem at another job and that was the reason no one had come that day...they would come first thing 9:00am the next day. Worker showed at 10:25a (started charging from 10:00a per the bill) stopped at 4:00 and then spoke with me for about 45 min about the next job. Charged me for 7hrs...uh...FREE estimate....uh...5hr 30 min actual work...then the big surprise...mark had charged me 2hrs for "picking up the parts needed at a the store" then they tried to charge me $30-40/fixture that they installed ( not marked up though...nonsense) When I showed him the SAME EXACT PARTS that I had purchased at the EXACT SAME STORE for $15-20/fixture. We replaced the overpriced parts and put the credit toward the bill. I also let him know that with no experience, I had managed to pick up the parts in less than 30 min. for what it took mark (an expert) 2 hrs to pick up and charged me for. I went ahead and payed him for the 7 hrs even though it should have been 5 1/2...I also payed the 2 hours for marks time. Saved some money on the parts that were not "marked up" by replacing them and said good riddance. In "7" hrs...the worker managed to get 8 switches, and 8 under cabinet fixtures put in...the problem....there were still another 4 switches/outlets not completed and a vent cover (installed the first time out) that remained unfinished. I tried to get over it, fool me once, etc.,etc., but at a rate of 1 switch every 30 min. I couldn't rationalize (or pay for) anymore of these guys time. I (handy, but untrained me) managed to put in the other 4 switches in about 1 1/2hrs...I was later told that 15 min per switch is around the time it should take for someone who is in that profession....but that the under cab lighting shouldn't have taken anywhere near as long as it took him....whatever. Still have the rest of the house to remodel...probably at least $8-10k in electrical work alone...could've been their job...but I just can't stand being thought a fool. Hey mark....did you really think none of your customers could add...or tell time...or expect the job to get done on time and on budget...no markups on your supplies?? Maybe this will be the review that helps keep someone else from making the same mistake I did. For anyone contemplating using roemke electric, ask him for his references, and don't hire him until he gives you one for a guy who remodeled his own kitchen in Sunnyvale...you'll know me when you talk to me. I expect 2 things to come from this review.... #1 - you will never be in contact with me...he'll never give me as a reference...even though I WAS one of his customers.....and #2 - if you don't get me as a reference, that should speak volumes about the kind of person you are about to do business with Good luck with your projects!!! read more

Very disappointing. After all the rave reviews on Yelp, I was willing to wait for them to return my calls, emails and texts. WEEK ONE: When I reached Mark on a Monday he said he was at lunch, but that I should text all my contact info and he'd get back to me. By Wednesday of week one, I'd had no communication, despite sending 3 text messages, and could not leave a message for him because his voicemail box was full, and sent an email. He said they were slammed with a job, and it would be next Monday at the earliest when they could get to me. WEEK TWO: Here it is Thursday, and I have had no communication despite an email yesterday and another sent today. How hard is it to send a text that says you are too busy and I should find another electrician? I've wasted almost 2 full weeks. read more

Terrible communication. At first, however, I was very impressed with Mark. He answered the phone, showed up to look at a small lighting job and was very personable and professional. He seemed enthusiastic to do the job, and emailed me a very competitive bid the next day. Then, after a couple emails, 2 voicemails, and a final text message, I get no response. Very strange, because he really seemed like a stand up guy to me and I wanted to hire him. Granted, he was in Hawaii (I think) for a couple weeks. No problem. I've known Mark and the Roemke Electric team for several years now. We first met when they were contracted by a previous landlord from whom I rented a home. This landlord said "they're very good and I have never been disappointed." When I moved to a new house, it was a damn wreck. The electrical looked as though it had not been upgraded or repaired since the late 70s or whatever. None of the plugs even had grounds. Mark (the owner) and I spoke for a while about what I wanted to achieve and he came by to look around the house, take notes and give a quote. He took as many as he could and then got back to me the next day with one. I called around and asked several other local companies in Silicon Valley if they could do the same work for a comparable or lower price. After I spoke to two other companies, they said I was getting a remarkable price on the services and electrical products offered in the quote/proposal. I called Roemke Electric back, accepted their offer and they began work the following week. Now, whenever we have family or friends over, they always say "your house is freakin' awesome" or "it is soooo nice." Roemke electric basically transformed and re-wired the whole home to current and modern standards. It was even complete with brand new main and sub fuse panels. Moreover, they really did a good job hanging my TV, adding outdoor electrical outlets/lighting and hooking up the place w/the newest LED recessed ceiling lighting. We needed to have a ceiling fan installed in the living room and a ceiling liht installed in our new baby room. So we checked out YELP and Craigslist and found Roemke. I called and spoke directly to Mark who was easy to talk to and gave me an accurate quote. Scheduled to have them come out that week. Shane and Grant showed up not only on time but a few minutes early. They crawled up into our attic and ran all the wires. They were able to complete all the work in a timely manner with no problems. They even used a heavy duty support bar for the fan. It's been a few weeks and everything works great. I was really impressed by their honesty. When we realized our dream home could have gone up in flames from our seriously messed up electrical box and due to the fact that we also realized none of our sockets were grounded, I panicked. Mark, and Grant came the next day, replaced our box and then the next week came over the hill daily to our home in Willow Glen to rewire our entire home. Despite the huge mess of sheet rock and insulation, they cleaned up at the end of every day. I trusted them completely in my home and they were very friendly and gave me lots of options. I called Roemke when I lost power in some outlets. I had called another electrician in town the previous day, and he never returned my call. So I went to Yelp to get some help. Mark takes his own calls, and when I phoned he was finishing up another job and said he'd come over after that. Wow. He diagnosed the problem and fixed it very quickly. It was a GFI conflict set off by a space heater. He even went thru the tangle of wires on my dusty entertainment center to get everything working again. Having done such a great job on setting up her breakers and outlets months ago, she called on Mark again last week to put in a fixture. Both times, Mark and his staff provided my sister with outstanding work at a reasonable price; and more importantly, he made the effort to fit my sister's jobs in with the short notice he had. I also got the impression (with just one phone conversation) that Mark is the "real deal" who truly cares about his customers. I plan on calling on Roemke next time I need a reasonably priced, quality minded and trustworthy electrician...just hope he isn't too busy to do work on this side of the hill :) read more

He came the same day we called, tested the alarms, confirmed they were indeed not functioning properly, took them to the supplier to get replacements, and installed the new alarms. I spoke with Mark who made sure to get enough information from me regarding our breaker box, etc so that he wouldn't have to return to the shop mid-visit, thus saving me both time and money. After a house remodel twelve years ago my pool light never had worked again. I had been given various bids of up to $2700 to fix the problem. Did a search, this electrician was highly rated on Yelp. Called and owner answered phone himself (two days after Christmas). Made an appointment for same day. Arrived promptly and got right to work. That's already astonishing in Santa Cruz! He analyzed problem and had it fixed in probably less than a half hour. I was expecting to pay a lot of money but he astonished me by only charging $80 for job and advice. Just had a major failure in our incoming electrical panel last Thursday night that required immediate repair (due to corrosion for 30 years of use) before we could use any major appliance. We had an initial electrician agree to come the next morning by 9am. Well he was a no show, so we searched the Yelp listed electricians. We got an immediate reply from Mark at Romeke and an initial estimate for the box replacement right over the phone. He arrived within a half hour to assess the situation and confirmed his quote. Four hour later his team had the job done and we were up watching a 3D movie to celebrate that night. Thank you Mark and team! I had a very good experience using this company. I have an alarm system that came installed with a newly purchased house. The alarm started beeping at random times and I was unable to disarm and power down the system. It was to say the least, very annoying. I talked to the alarm company for over an hour and was unable to get it resolved. As a last resort did a Yelp review and called Roemke Electric to come over and physically disconnect the alarm. Mark was at my house within 10 mins of my call and had the thing unplugged and disarmed within minutes. I was impressed with the response time, professionalism, plus the cost was completely reasonable. I know this was a small job but I'd recommend Roemke to others. read more
