This is a delayed review for work finished in February 2021. Now that I'm looking for an electrician to replace a sub panel, I'm realizing how valuable honest reviews are. The theme here is going be The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly. The good: the guy who evaluated the job was professional and friendly, and then the guy leading the two-man actual work fairly reeked of competence. They did a fantastic, clean-looking job (though they did leave screws and various detritus laying around the area, as almost everyone seems to do these days. No one cleans up conscientiously any more). I'm 100% satisfied with the quality of the new, up-to-date main panel. The bad. I had this work done when I was off on vacation in Baja. As I always do, and have done for a dozen years, I drained my portable electric-run hot tub before leaving. This time, however, I though, "why not use this handy switch on my brand new panel instead of unplugging it?" BIG MISTAKE. While I was on vacation, one of the electricians came over to photograph the panel for the inspectors, and clearly he turned on all the switches, and left them on -- completely frying my hot tub pump for about 2K in damages. I discovered this when I got home. "What -- is that thing on? WTH!!!" The ugly. Though at first apologetic, the company became a bit confrontation and doubted my story. Yeah, sorry -- I've drained and deactivated that tub 20 times and never left it on. The dude turned it on while I was gone via the panel switch, and ruined it. Eventually they agreed to pay for a refurbished pump for about 1.2K, which seemed fair enough. HOWEVER, lo and behold, on inspection they found some oddities in the lower well pump switch that just HAPPENED to amount to the cost of the pump. Strange coincidence! They made the mistake of sending a contractor to do this extra work, and the guys eyes popped out when I told him what I was paying for the job. I don't want to get him in trouble, but he told me the work was probably worth more like 2-300. "Could've been better" is a perfect description of this overall experience. I have a top quality main panel. But I vastly overpaid for it, lacked my lovely hot tub for a month, and dealt with a bunch of unpleasant communications to try and get just compensation (which, as I note, got absorbed into the high fees). read more

We were so very pleased and totally impressed with the above and beyond service and excellent quality of work at John Hope Electric. We had an issue one evening where our power gradually shorted out throughout the house. We called John Hope Electric and other businesses on an urgent basis early the next morning. Unfortunately, it was a holiday and people were very busy working with skeleton crews and could not help. But the receptionist at JHE was extremely kind and understanding of the urgency and potential danger of our situation and said she would do what she could to try to get one of their workers to squeeze in the job. Within a half hour, she called back and said she had found a worker to come right away. We were so totally relieved she had gone the extra mile to help! Their (friendly) electrician arrived quickly and soon ascertained that we had a melted circuit breaker. The circuit breaker was an older type (at the end of its lifespan, he said), but he had the less common part on hand and quickly replaced it, restoring power to the house. We were so hugely relieved and grateful! We also asked him to check some other wiring, which he kindly did, and made some quick but essential changes. After all this completely fantastic service, the price was also super reasonable. We would definitely give them more than five stars if possible and I wholeheartedly recommend them here and to friends in person! What a fantastic business! read more

I'm not a regular review poster, but giving credit where it is due. As a former property manager, I have worked with many electrical (and other) contractors. Recently, our house began having multiple electrical issues, so I started calling local electricians. I hit a few voicemails, with only one call back, and only after a few days had passed. I was able to speak to a human at one outfit, but they could not get me scheduled for weeks. When I called John Hope Electric, they answered immediately, and had me on their schedule for the next day. I had four separate issues and was expecting this to be ~$1500. On the scheduled day, Robert (Hope electrician) called me hours before my appointment and said he had finished a job earlier than expected, and could either come right now, or at my scheduled time. Recently, from a referral, I contacted John Hope Electric to hang a chandelier in my studio salon in Aptos. Long story short I had previously contacted FIVE other electricians who either did not respond, did not show up, gave me quotes but never returned calls, or cancelled after work was scheduled. I was so frustrated!! Then I called John Hope... Best decision ever! John showed up on time at my studio to assess and provide a quote. He was professional and knowledgable, he gave me realistic expectations, explained possibilities, provided a quote when he said he would (that was incredibly reasonable might I add) and I was able to easily schedule work. Come the day of when work was to happen, his technician (Cree) showed up eager and ready to do the work. Cree was awesome! He was very professional and did a great job. He finished promptly and kept the salon very neat and tidy. Billing was a breeze also! Everything was as quoted, and the receptionist was so easy to work with. Online billing was a plus! Umm... $5000 to install two 220V power outlets??? 2-3 hours of work, about 150 feet of wire and two circuit breakers? Thanks, but no thanks. Took me just a little over an hour to get both installed myself. P.S. my review is solely based on the price quoted. I can't provide any work quality review. But for this much money??? Are the wires they install made out of gold??? P.P.S. Total time spent: about 20 minutes doing research online, about an hour at Home Depot. About 1.5 hours installing everything. P.P.P.S. Total amount of money spent: about $150. In response to John H. the owner: like I said, it took a total of about $150 for materials and a few hours of work for me to do the same job you quote $5000 to do, with all the permits and certifications (yes, I am certified to work with electrical equipment). All the outdoor certified conduits, the properly gauged wires, the double-pole circuit breakers - that all costs pennies. The work itself doesn't require any PhDs or even a masters degree (heck, not even a bachelors one!) I'm sure there are people who are happy to part with their money to get a nail hammered into a wall to hang a picture. I'm not one of them. If I'm quoted exorbitant amount of money for a job that requires very little skill or education - I'll do my research and do the job myself, thank you very much. 3 hour job at $5000 - that's over $1500 per hour. Even lawyers rarely charge that much. And, by the way, the price quoted is nearly double of what the next highest quote I got from local electricians. The most acceptable quote I got was about $500 per circuit. Still too high, in my opinion, but $1000 for two circuits definitely beats the $5000. read more

The entire team at Hope electric is fantastic and highly professional. We purchased and had installed a Generac 22KW generator from them. The installation was complex since we had another smaller gasoline generator that we wanted to keep in the circuit and be able to run. Additionally there was some outside wiring that needed to be upgraded, AND we wanted to get this all permitted. Building permits in Santa Cruz are not easy. They did a fantastic job of the installation, the set up and dealing with the county. They overcame numerous problems for us, got the work done in a timely manner with no price surprises....I can not recommend them highly enough. These guys were not our first call, but I'm really glad we found them. We were interested in getting a getting a hot tub, but needed to have electrical run to our backyard and we knew it would not be an easy job. We initially got an estimate from another company. It was SO HIGH that at first we decided to give-up on the idea. Then, in talking with a hot tub dealer, we got a recommendation to John Hope Electric for a second opinion. I'm VERY glad we decided to give it a shot. They quickly responded to my inquiry and soon came out to review our property. They gave us a couple of different options, BOTH less than the original estimate, but still more than we were likely to spend. However, they ALSO were very observant and discovered an abandoned conduit that the previous owners had covered-up which turned out to be EXACTLY what we needed to run the new line. This literally saved us THOUSANDS and made the job affordable to do. Once we approved the estimate they scheduled the job, showed-up on time, and completed it right on schedule budget. John Hope Electric did a good job with a good price on my home outdoor lighting. So I called them again to do install a new fixture and re-do some plugs and also look at some track lighting for my rental. They quoted the work on a T&M basis and I noted how long they worked. While they did good work, the billing department sent me a bill which reflected a much longer, obviously approximate time ("2 guys for a half day") which after asking questions, they started handwaving "this included travel time, and set-up time". After I called them out that no one charges for any of that, and I told them I was there and the times did not line up. They did settle with me on the right charges but I did not appreciate having to police their hours, have to call them on this, and argue with the company about the bill. We have the Winchester Mystery House of electrical wiring (crazy town!). We've had other electricians in to address specific problems we experienced (all did acceptable work), and have received advice from them to obtain another line from PG&E, install a larger box, rewire the converted barn on our property - some big ticket items. Our electric bill seems wildly high already, and we'd like to move toward solar. We decided to have all of our electrical wiring inspected to have a consolidated list of the issues to be addressed in order to prioritize work that's needed.
