I booked a blow-out with Roger Markel after looking at maps and seeing it was very close to Penn Station. I looked at their Facebook page, reviews and website and decided to book with them and then jump on my train. First of all, I needed an early appointment, so when I arrived I was greeted by Markel, one of the partners. The salon was easy to find and very quaint and chic, up one easy flight of stairs. I'm so glad I booked with them because the whole experience was great and my hair was wonderful for the day ahead, and will be for following days. His shampoo at the basin was wonderful and I decided to get a conditioning treatment as well, because I've been highlighting my hair for 30 years straight and I get concerned these days even by a blow dryer. During the pandemic, like many of us, I took advantage of the lowered rent opportunities and moved into a new neighborhood. At the edge of Hudson Yards, there was a barber nearly out my front door, but haircut left me in search for a real salon. I stumble upon Roger Markel Salon. Easy to access, a block down from Penn Station on 7th Ave. I buzzed the door in hopes my head of hair would not walk out looking looking like one of the Three Stooges. Walking in to a nice clean professional atmosphere, Aba was assigned to scissor cut my hair. He listened, head my concerns and direction, and Walked out with a perfect new cut. Proud and not shy to appear on the red carpet or out with friends. Since that day, for now coming up on two years, Roger Markel is my only choice in the world to have my hair/look taken into the hands of another. The three men who own and run the salon, Roger, Markel and Aba - are each lovely and kind hearted souls. He and his staff all wore masks and had sanitizer available for when people came in. Markel is The Best (as my original review for him at the 8th ave location said many years ago) -- my hair is super thick and wavy, but he always manages to cut it in a way that is manageable and grows out beautifully! I did not appreciate Roger's habit of touching and squeezing me - including groping my breast under cover of "brushing the hair off the apron front". Nice drink offer to sip while they work, managed to fit me in same day. Staff did not wear masks/at all or properly, hope they were vaccinated! Loved my haircut about halfway through, but they kept going.... now it's only ok. As styled in the chair, it totally was not my personality, and a little vintage David Bowie. I've had my hair cut and colored a LOT in my lifetime, and I've always been willing to spend top dollar to get it right. This salon is not cheap but is in the midrange price, with top dollar results. The highlights/gloss Markel did for me are as good as any I've ever had - beautiful, natural, shiny and soft. The cut was perfect.
