Hair cuts are generally very good, but color is hit or miss. Unfortunately it was a big miss for us. The color was brassy, un-natural looking and the scalp was dyed and very obvious. A very artifical look. Looked like the color came from a cheap box dye. The colorist lacked control and expertize. Wish this was a better experience. read more

Been going to Dlala salon ever since finding Lyudmila through a google search for really good pixie cuts. I didn't even end up getting a pixie cut (I was pregnant/hormonal/not good timing for pixie upkeep- thanks for the sage advice Lyudmila) but I DID find a regular stylist for the first time since my old stylist left me for South Carolina during the pandemic. Every cut I've had from Lyudmila has been exactly what I've hoped for: suits my face and my hair well, grows out beautifully, stays as minimal maintenance as I am. I had hopes that this salon would work for me and went for my second cut a week ago. I've been trying to grow my hair out for the past two years and asked for it to be shaped without taking off a lot of length. The stylist proceeded to cut more than discussed and has taken off more than a year of my hair grow effort. The cut itself is equally disappointing; uneven, not blended on the back side and looks more like a stylist right out of cosmetology school. I showed a reference photo of a haircut that I had a few years back and not sure what happened in the translation from what I asked for to what she decided to do but I am so unhappy that I won't be going back. read more

First time here yesterday, and was referred by a friend to ask for Misora. I was hesitant since I hadn't dyed my hair in about 5 years maybe more. Misora was extremely knowledgeable, explained what would be the best process and what colors would work best for my hair while still giving me what I wanted (a balayage and a cut) and made me feel less nervous about such a big change, for me. she was professional, friendly, and walked me through every step of the process, explaining what she was doing and why it was important. She gave me tips on how to maintain my hair to keep it from fading. Finally when it came for my cut she was quick and I got EXACTLY what I wanted. I am so sorry for the low lighting which doesn't do it justice, but I got my hair cut by Shohei (Shawn), who did a great job. I think like many women with long hair, I am very protective of mine. It was 8 months since my last haircut, so I knew I really needed to take off some inches--I just told Shohei to do what he thought was best and try to keep it long. He was really careful and did not take off more than necessary. I have thick, frizzy hair, and I usually just wash it and go. The cut falls great and looks nice even without the blowout. Also, as others have mentioned, the staff here is really nice in general, plus there's tea and a nice head massage when they wash your hair. And the price is probably the best in NYC (I paid about $70 before tip which makes sense for the length/thickness of my hair). Thank you SO much to Shohei for being respectful of the length I requested and following the reference photos that I brought in, and thank you to Dlala for offering affordable haircuts in this very expensive city. I really love coming to Misora for my hair. I have thick, wavy/curly hair. If not handled properly, it'll become frizzy and untameable. I appreciate the fact that Misora advises based on what is good for me/my hair rather than thinking about the bottom line. She makes me look good every time, whether it be hair color or styling. After my stylist at Cutler Salon left NYC for LA...1 year ago, I finally...finally was emotionally ready for a new stylist to cut my hair. For posting pictures and with such great reviews - I knew that I was making the right choice. On a bright sunny Tuesday morning I met Junya! A talented artist who worked his magic in my hair by first dry cutting my hair and being so meticulous all the while listening to all my concerns regarding the texture and styling of my hair. He then washed my hair with an amazing scalp massage and then blow dried and styled my hair, double, triple checking his work....all for a total of $73!! One of my biggest issues as always been keeping the length of my hair while updating my layers, to most stylist that translates taking off a lot of length - but that was NOT the case with Junya! He preserved the length of my hair while updating my look and giving me styling tips and tricks along the way. As I was sitting there admiring my updated cut, I looked around and saw the work of other stylists as well and everyone just looked phenomenal! I saw Mariko Osanai for haircuts and color faithfully for more than two years, and even though her current schedule (weekends only) doesn't mesh with mine, I have nothing but good things to say about her--and about Dlala on the whole. The first time I went to Mariko it was to get a drastic haircut the involved partial head-shaving. I'm pretty fearless when it comes to hair, but I knew I needed to see someone who understood the look I was going for, and knew what to do with my fine, soft hair in order to give it the texture it needed to carry off the cut. Mariko was recommended to me by a friend of a friend, and I am forever grateful. Mariko has given me lots of different looks, and has always nailed exactly what I was going for. Same goes for color--whether it's a simple dark brown or high-contrast ombre, she always hits the mark. She is careful and precise, but doesn't hold back when drama is needed. I had my hair cut by Yuki or Yuri. I feel bad for forgetting her name (...and losing her card...oops) because she was amazing! = I have super thick, sleek straight, long, long Vietnamese hair. I seldom ask for anything drastic or crazy. I prefer long layers that frame my face. Nothing too difficult or special... or so I thought. When I first met Yuki/Yuri i anxiously emphasized that I was not comfortable with losing my length because often hairdressers confuse 2 inches for 5 inches and go chop happy. I told her I just wanted nice layers that frame my face so my hair wouldn't look so boring and mop-like. She was so sweet and gave me feedback and suggestions but never pushed me towards anything I didn't want. She listened to me and delivered. YukiYuri is a genius because she managed to literally cut SO little, that I couldn't even tell she snipped my dead ends off. She also somehow made my hair feel lighter without sacrificing my hair's lush thickness. She framed the layers around my face in such a flattering way that it made my face look instantly slimmer. Basically she has magical hands. My hair has never looked better! I never thought my usual layered cut could look so good. $60 + tip was totally worth it. read more

I went to Dlala with an appointment (yes, make one!!) with Coco today, and was looking to get a wave/curl perm. She took the time to sit down with me and talk to me about the hairstyle I wanted. I was disappointed to find out the difference between regular and digital perms -- for all of those who don't know, for future reference, regular perms will only do the very loose, beachy waves, while digital perms will help you get very pronounced, distinct, bouncy waves. Turns out, the hairstyles I've all chosen are only achievable by digital perms (disappointment)! Coco took the time to explain everything to me, and was very nice about it. I booked about 3 hrs with her, and she suggested I skip the reg. perm if I wanted those digital perm-only waves. She was patient and listened, and was also very good at explaining things to me to make sure I understood every detail. I feel bad that I seemed to have wasted her time, but she said it was no problem, she would ring up the next guy immediately and everything would be good :) service is always refreshing. While I'm disappointed I wasn't able to get my hair done, I can tell the people here are definitely professionals! My cousin came here to get a haircut from Junya today, and she is very pleased with the cut. I love going to Dlala. The experience there has always always always been pleasant and relaxing. The staff is incredibly friendly and accommodating. I've even been there just to get my hair shampoo'ed after a long day of work. It's a small therapeutic haven at the tip of Tompkins Square Park. Getting a haircut is sadly a little less ideal for me. Though I have tried a few times, I was never blown away by the cuts I received there. My hair would look all right after they set it but after washing at home the next day the cuts look too unruly. Kumi is legit! I just had a four hour session with her cutting my hair and coloring my hair from black to ash grey/brown. She was meticulous from beginning to end and was constantly making sure my scalp was okay from all the bleach. More than anything she took her time to run through in detail which color would be best for me before we got started. It didn't seem like 4 hours at all. She was very personable and informative. Worst hair color experience I've ever had. I asked Toshi for a dark brown color and he completely fried my hair with bleach and it is now so orange. My hair is completely destroyed. On top of that, I found Toshi very condescending and pushy. I am so upset about my hair. On top of that, he charged me so much. I told him that my hair color does not match the photo with the hair color I wanted and he completely denied it even though there was such a big difference. After he said he was done and I left, I noticed there was still a plastic on the back of my neck. He forgot to clean it up. So unprofessional. read more

After reading all the enthusiastic reviews, I went into Dlala with high expectations. I worried that they were perhaps too high, but Mariko did not disappoint (nor did the fantastic Japanese grocery store she recommended). She gave me the haircut I've been trying to get at various salons in various countries for nearly a year. It's always been almost perfect and Mariko gave it the extra nudge it needed. The stylists on either side of me seemed to be doing a great job with their customers as well.
