For all the decades I've lived in NYC, it took me til yesterday to visit for a haircut. My former stylist retired so was looking around. A friend recommended this place but I was skeptical because I didn't think Astor Hair stylists were familiar with long hair. But wow was I mistaken! I met Regina, a beautiful kind and super experienced and unbelievably talented stylist. She asked me how short I wanted to go, what my objectives were (endure the summer heat) and maintain the line my former stylist had going on. Here's the result. Can I say I love it- yes! But my personal journey has been to maintain the full thickness of my hair, which is unrealistic when I compare with my goals to reduce the impact of heat on my neck and head. It will take some time to get used to managing a much smaller amount of hair. But my friends love it, my spouse loves it, and most importantly I have been able to replicate the same style on my own. 3X less expensive than my former stylist with better results. That's also something i love. Obviously, the vibe in this iconic place is fantastic. Gave me CBGB and late 70-early 80's nostalgia for my beloved NY. I only wish I'd have known they could cut long hair as well as Regina can. read more

I can't say enough bad things about this place. I've come here pretty often this last decade or so and it's been terrible every time. This last time, some older man didn't seem to listen to a word of what I asked for (asked for a trim and he basically shaved off the sides completely and barely touched the top, it looks ridiculous) left me with the worst haircut I've ever had, forced me into a shampoo rinse I never asked for then put a bunch of smelly aftershave on me without asking. I have given this place so many chances over the years but I'm never coming back again after this. read more

Usually my haircuts take 20/30 minutes. This took five at most. My kid asked me for a haircut and I knew it was going to be a tall order. Fluffy hair for a kid with stick straight hair? Hmmmm. Jose took on the challenge - he offered my kid a perm (I said no) and then he gave him a super great haircut. I was happy. My kid said nothing. When we got outside I could tell something wasn't right. "Does he know what a fade is, mom?" I asked my kid to clarify "do you want your actual scalp to show" (yes) and then we both pushed our comfort levels and marched back in to ask the poor guy to fix it to the shy kid's expectations, this time stated in words. He put his apron back on like a good sport and went back in for a second pass. A real smile appeared and my kid now checks his hair in the mirror every 30 seconds. Every window. Recommend guys get their hair cut at Astor Place, even if you're just in the city visiting. The people at this place know their stuff! Coming here since the late '90s when they also had a part of the store at street level. While it's now all underground and my regular guy having retired a couple years ago, I continue to go back. Understand Astor Place prices have creeped up to keep things going when many started to cut their own hair during the pandemic, however it remains a classic keeping absolutely fair prices. I have been going to IRMA at Astor Place hair for over 10 years for a good reason: she does great work. What she does now for me beside a great cut is coloring in 3 colors. She turns most of my hair brown, then she does blond highlights with aluminum foil, finally she adds a little of bright pink for a fun final touch that everyone loves. I travel a lot and must at times go to another stylist but I have never found one that matches her skills. read more

Wanted a trim instead I Got 6 months of hair growth chopped off . Unfortunately, barbers can't follow a simple request and just follow the trendy and their own rules to a default . This is for the rudest hair stylist that I've ever met. First time that I was literally pushed back and forth in a rotate chair while he's standing still; Used the shaver in a way opposite to gentleness and without any patience. Was told "you are good to go" without bothering to ask if you need wash / blow and replied bluntly "you didn't ask". When asking about the restroom, was told "pay first and then use the restroom". I believe this is a renowned barber shop in east village and this experience doesn't represent other stylists working there. However I felt I had to leave this because of the extremely frustrating experience I had today. read more
