Living less than 10 minutes away, I can't believe how many decades it has taken to "discover" this delicious gem that has quickly become a family favorite with my in laws. The service always impeccable, the intimate and dark wood paneled bar area just so cozy - can't wait to come when a light snow is falling through the huge windows ... The food was pretty spectacular in May but our most recent visit it was clear that it got even better! The white cosmo is my fave and of course that bread & butter service (our Eastern Euro roots make this a very important part of the meal haha) MIL and I have split the Caesar salad to start - always perfection. Lobster bisque, arancini special and especially that sumptuous mushroom vol a vent just melted in your mouth. We spent three nights at this historic New England inn which was renovated in 1998. The inn is lovely with beautiful landscaping, patio, and covered decks. We thoroughly enjoyed the food as well. TL;DR - Visited on Mother's Day with $110 fixed price menu. Food came out missing various ingredients that were advertised on the menu. Received mediocre service. After 20+ years in the area, we decided to give The Roger Sherman Inn a try for our Mother's Day celebration. For $110 per person, we were expecting good food and good service. Surprisingly, we received neither. Food: - Appetizers: It was off to a rocky start when neither of the beet salads we ordered came with goat cheese as advertised. The chilled corn chowder came with only one small shredded piece of crab meat. -Entree: We had high hopes for a turnaround in our experience. Unfortunately, our hopes were quickly dashed when the surf and turf landed on our table. Menu listing outlines a seared filet mignon and jumbo shrimp. Whatever landed on our table was very clearly not a fillet mignon, and had much gristle throughout. Jumbo shrimp was also quite overcooked. Fish dishes advertised to come with caviar arrived without caviar (big surprise). -Dessert: lemon tart and white chocolate truffles. Nothing note worthy, not very good, not very bad. -Service: When we brought these issues to the attention of a manager, he brought out a raw cut of filet mignon to our table. Though he was trying to show that they were smaller cuts, it was still clear that the steak we received was different. One meal was comped. Beyond that, exceedingly mediocre service. 8/15 dishes we had were flawed in some way. Nothing wowed us about the food or experience. Safe to say we will likely never be back. Came for dinner and had a pleasant experience but I wouldn't make a trip back just for this place. I had the "French 75" cocktail which was good but nothing spectacular. The lobster bisque was also good but a little too creamy in my opinion and the deviled eggs tasty but it seems a little crazy to pay $15 for 4 halves of an egg. I ordered the veal entree and I would definitely recommend it. It was perfectly cooked and delicious. The service was good and the ambiance was nice but the environment of the customers was a little strange. Nothing the restaurant can do but felt very 'posh.' My brother ordered the creme brûlée which was alright but not my favorite. Overall I liked the food and the staff were very nice. I think that the inn is a second-class citizen at this operation renovated 30 years earlier, it looks dated and tired. we stayed in the "cottage" building and it smelled very of a very-old carpet when we entered. In a word, fantastic. Had a party here for moms 75th. There were fifteen of us and we coordinated all the details with Sue the manager. She walked us through all the choices and W's a pleasure to deal with as were all the staff. Started with cocktails and hors d'oevres on the lawn. Full open bar and the apps were amazing. Meatballs and bacon wrapped scallops, fish tacos and pickled vegetables, tomatoes tarts all were delicious. Staff came round and round. Dinner was steak or salmon and everyone raves about the food. Very high quality. Waitstaff was plentiful and gave us all the attention we needed. They also do desert. I'd recommend the carrot cake with vanilla buttercream frosting. Very nice. I debated whether or not to write this...I don't want to hurt small businesses, but feel it's my responsibility to warn people. We stayed here recently over the Christmas holiday. I have been coming to this hotel since the early 1990s, the new ownership here is going to run this place into the ground. We stayed the night at the hotel. You can see below the stains on the pillow, which means they don't wash the linens properly even during a pandemic, and the wall looks more like a crack house than a room you would be charged $450/night for...shameful. They cut corners, the service at the restaurant is terrible, and while the purpose of a business is to make a profit, you don't want cheapskate, skinflint people trying to squeeze you for every dollar. $700 for dinner, $175 before that at the bar, only to be ignored by the staff, then for checks "over a certain amount" they just add a 20% gratuity. I have heard that for parties of 6/8 and over, but never for a specific dollar amount, which they didn't specify on the menu. We were a party of 4, we were ignored the entire evening, it was extremely frustrating not to have a waiter designated for our table. The owners are rude, they cultivate a caustic atmosphere that is neither relaxing or fun. The once charming atmosphere here is completely ruined and it is very clear their goal is simply to take as much money from the people in this area while putting in the minimal amount of effort. When it changes hands to new owners, the kind who know you need to wash sheets and fix cracks in the walls, I will come back. Until then, I would suggest staying away. read more

WARNING: STAY AWAY My mom, finance and I had a lunch reservation at the Inn on Saturday May 29. We intended to try the food and check out the facility before planning our wedding reception. We were running a few minutes late, so we called to let the Inn know. Shockingly, when we called, the owner told us that the Inn was closed for a private party and they forgot to call to let me know. Are you kidding me? Why in the world would anyone plan an important event at this fraudulent place and risk that they could just "forget" about it. Stayed here while visiting a friend in New Canaan. Great location if New Canaan is your destination. Rooms are nice. We had one single room and the two bedroom suite. For what they charge ($300 per bed room) I expected nicer bathrooms but no big deal. If you want to drink the bottled water they leave out- it's $6.00 per bottle. Yes, they have a sign up but I didn't have my glasses on so I missed it, and it never occurred to me that an inn that charges $300/ night would nickel dime you on water bottles. Also- the breakfast is nothing to write home about. Coffee, , tea, Activia, some breads and apples. Would I stay there again- maybe if I lower my expectations for a $300 room. read more

We had my mother's memorial service and reception in the garden room today and it was beautiful. The garden room has floor to ceiling windows along two of the 4 walls. So much natural light. The weather was nice so we could open the doors to use the deck/porch. Then, from there were steps to the lawn with a few Adirondack chairs, a table, and they even had and set up for us a beanbag toss game on the lawn for the kids. The food was delicious. The service was prompt, thorough and unobtrusive. We used their microphone system, and several easels for posters. Furthermore there was a party behind a shared wall, and we heard nothing. It was so very nice. I highly recommend this venue. Ill post a video of the space before it was set up for us. Christmas Day dinner.... We came for Christmas Day a few years back and it was incredibly elegant and delicious. This year we came back again and, although we enjoyed our evening very much, it wasn't as good as the first time. The dining room felt a little under decorated and the fireplace only had candles in it that weren't even lit. The staff was fabulous and very attentive. The food was good except it was COLD and the beef wellington overcooked. It was disappointing because it was obvious that it would have been perfectly delicious if the temps were right. Lovely Historic Inn, Beautifully Renovated...and Fabulous Food for a Rehearsal Dinner! I just spent the most wonderful weekend at the Roger Sherman Inn, while I was in town for my friends' wedding. From the moment I arrived, I felt at home. The staff are all warm, friendly, and very accommodating. My room was in on the 2nd floor of the Carriage House... and Nick at the front desk explained how I could park my car in front of that building. He asked if I needed assistance with my luggage, and I replied no. But yet, as soon as I parked and got out of my car, there was Nick - waiting for me - to carry my luggage upstairs! Room #15 was lovely... in tones of sage green and white. The bed was very comfortable, and the shower was HOT with great water pressure! (Not something I would have expected in an historic Inn.) That evening, my friends hosted their Rehearsal Dinner in the Main Dining Room - which is lovely, where we also were given access to a back deck to enjoy our cocktails. My compliments to the Chef! The food was outstanding!!! I had a fabulous salmon entree, but then was equally envious of others at the table who had ordered steak. It arrived to the table perfectly cooked to medium rare, and all said it was delicious as well. Both nights that I was there, I also ended the night with drinks in the Tavern / Bar. The bartender is charming and easy on the eyes, and a great conversationalist. I also unknowingly started up a conversation with the co-owner, Nes Jaffre. She is lovely, and I truly enjoyed speaking with her. I found out later that she also was in charge of all the renovations / interior design of the Inn... and she's done an amazing job... right down to the beautiful Ladies' Room, just off the main lobby. Hats off, too, to GM Jean-Pierre, who was charming and kind to us all. As was the waiter Emanuelle. We just got back from a stay at the Inn for my 30th birthday weekend. We were visiting all the way from Los Angeles! The minute we arrived we were so happy to be there. Lovely jazz music was playing in the restaurant. We loved our room (#17 in the carriage house). We are really picky when it comes to beds and the beds were so comfy. Water pressure was great and never ran out of hot water. Every single meal we had by the chef, Christophe, was INSANELY amazing. You really cannot go wrong. Me and boyfriend stayed here for the weekend on Saturday and Sunday (two nights.) We booked a standard room, but because there was availability they upgrade us to a carriage room, superior, really lovely, with a private porch! The room was recently renovated, with great taste and decor. Our staying was happy; really nice staff, with an included delicious breakfast 8-10 am with fresh fruits, mini warm bakery options, yogurt, juices, great coffee and lots of tea options. I would highly suggested to whatever visitor want to make a weekend out of visiting The Glass House and neighborhood artsy destinations. P.s. A couple of our friends, who stayed just one night, were placed in a standard room, in the main building. Found the Roger Sherman Inn because I had to. For approximately "ever", Southwestern Fairfield County had a cluster of really old-school, upscale restaurants, operating out of well-kept but ancient inns, that all followed a similar formula: Continental-influenced American cuisine, attentive yet unobtrusive service from a professional, liveried wait staff, a reliable if not overly exciting menu, pleasing but not quite opulent decor, with lots of wood, a big fireplace, and a relaxing, quiet ambiance. The Red Barn, The Three Bears, The Silvermine Tavern, and The Cobbs Mill Inn were some examples. If you grew up around here, your parents and/or grandparents may have enjoyed these places. I know mine did. They were "special occasion" places, for birthdays, anniversaries, Mother's Day, and so on. Unfortunately, they all closed their doors, one by one. When the Red Barn went out last year, I lost my last "special occasion" dining spot and had to go in search of a new one. I wanted to try Stonehenge, and I'd still like to, but I had some time constraints and I needed a place that started serving before 6:00, so I wound up at the Roger Sherman Inn a couple of nights ago. When we walked in at 5:00, the place seemed deserted. The only staff member I could find was behind what looked like the "front desk" of the Inn. He didn't greet us so I greeted him and told him that we were two for dinner. He looked pointedly at the clock and repeated, "Dinner?" in a disbelieving tone. Before I could ask if there was some problem (their hours were 12:00-9:00), another employee came from around the corner and cheerfully asked if we preferred to sit outside or inside. The inside is elegantly decorated and clean, but the weather was perfect so we sat on the deck, which was beautifully maintained, covered, and complete with fans in case there isn't enough of a breeze. We found a pleasing view with a manicured front lawn, plenty of mature landscaping, and modest traffic on Oenoke Ridge in front of the Inn. At that point I would have been fine just sipping cocktails and unwinding, but we were there for dinner, so we ordered up homemade gnocchi ($26), a Black Angus burger ($16), two strawberry daquiris ($12 each), onion soup ($9) and tomato bisque ($12). Before our meal, we were brought one tiny dinner roll each, which were warmed but stale. The onion soup was flavorful, with nicely roasted onions but very little cheese. The tomato bisque was a disappointment; bisque is supposed to contain cream and wine or cognac, and there was no taste of either. And if your menu boasts that your tomato bisque is served with "Grilled Cheese Crouton", there should be some food item resembling two slices of bread, cooked on a grill with a slice of cheese between them, because that's what "grilled cheese" means. Two comically-tiny pieces of bread with half a teaspoon of cheese on each as a garnish does not a grilled cheese make, doubly so if you're charging $12 for it. The gnocchi with mushrooms, pancetta, baby spinach, and parmesan in what seemed like a garlic butter sauce, was excellent. The burger, ordered medium and "pink inside" was beautifully presented, with carmelized onions, bacon, cheddar, an impressive bakery-style roll and great truffle fries, but it was gray all the way through and dry as a bone. The daquiris were not frozen or blended, which was a surprise. I guess I'll ask next time. The house water was perfect though; clear, cold and zero off-flavors. Service was very good; polite and discreet, with no squatting-next-to-the-table nonsense or referring to us as "you two", as in, "Are you two ready to order?", which always sets my teeth on edge. Kinda pricey, especially for what you get. The venue itself is nice enough that we'll be back, but we'll have a better idea of what to skip next time. read more

I got food poisoning and was made to feel like I was totally out of my mind to suggest it was from their food. I thought long and hard about whether I should write this review. And it saddens me to say what I am about to say. My partner and I had dinner at Roger Sherman Inn for Valentine's Day. We came in good spirits and were seated promptly. It was a price fix menu so we gave our order for the app, entree and dessert all at once. I started with the blue crab over bib lettuce and a margarita. The crab came and it was just ok. It tasted somewhat strange but not enough for me to not eat it. I just figured it was just odd flavors. The service slowed down from there so we kept asking for bread to hold us over. But at the same time, I was feeling tired and not so great. I also wasn't really drinking my cocktail (not like me!). I was fighting the feeling trying not to ruin our date night. I'm not a big Valentine's Day fan but my partner is so I didn't want to ruin it for him. But this pain started to get worse and worse. The entree finally came but I was not able to eat it. This is so unlike me. I had to go to the bathroom a few times but wasn't able to settle my stomach. It just kept feeling more and more painful. I came back from the bathroom and told my partner to ask for the check and I would stay in the bathroom and rest on the couch in there. We left shortly after and as soon as we got home I raced to the bathroom and puked everything I ate. Which was only the crab. I was up that whole night laying on the bathroom floor and puking every so often. It was terrible. The next day I was out of it and had to rest the whole day. I had to miss a very important evening because I was still too weak from the previous night. I thought about what happened and what it could have been. My gut instinct was it had to be the crab. I only ate very little earlier that day and everything I had was with other people who had the same thing. The chances of it being from anything else seemed extremely low to me. So I decided I would call the restaurant and tell them what happened. I wanted to inform them about the crab and also see if they were willing to reimburse me for my terrible experience. I felt like that's just what you do as a restaurant if a customer claims an experience like that. Especially a so called high end restaurant. This is where my extreme disappointment arose. I called and got someone who wasn't able to help me but told me that someone would call me back later that day. That's fine. But no call came. I called again when I figured the kitchen would be open but this time they were too busy and again said they would call me back. I waited a few days this time. No call back. I finally called well after the weekend and spoke with someone. This time I had a different tone and the woman on the line said that someone would absolutely be calling me back. Later that day I did get a call back. It was someone who ran the kitchen. I told him what happened and to my surprise he went on to tell me that they sold so many crab appetizers and everyone loved it and there was no other incident like mine. Also, the staff ate it and they were all raving about it. He made me feel as if I was an idiot and couldn't possibly have gotten sick from their food. When I got the sense he was going to end the call I then suggested that they should comp our meal. Not his suggestion (which I would have absolutely expected from a restaurant of this caliber). No, he was going to let me go without any offer to compensate. Wow. So when I made this suggestion he said he would have to talk to someone else and then get back to me. When I expressed concern that it took them so long to get back to me before and it was only because I was proactive in calling, he reassured me that no, they would absolutely get back to me. Well, guess what? They didn't. For a restaurant that charges $85 for a price fix menu for food that is (I'm sorry but) mediocre at best, I would really try and make sure you listen to your customers better and maybe try not to make them feel like total idiots. And you know what? Let's say you don't believe me or you think it can't be possible that I got sick from your food? Ok fine. But then eat the cost. That's part of doing business. Because sure, is there a chance that maybe I got food poisoning from something else? Sure! Even though I strongly believe it was that damn crab. But there was no reason for me to chase you to call me and then to treat me as if I was out of my mind for bringing this to your attention. read more

We recently attended an engagement party held at the Roger Sherman Inn. My daughter certainly kept the staff entertained with her wild bantering. RGI offers a free coat check which is nice since I was struggling with a car seat, diaper bag, a one year old, and gifts. The food was really good and the yellow mustard sauce for the salmon was amazing. It brought out so much flavor in the salmon. The lunch was buffet style, but ran out quickly. There were moments when the guests were standing for 10+ minutes waiting for more food to come out. This was very disappointing. However, I would come back to try a seated meal. read more
