For a simple neighborhood sushi cafe it hits the mark. The atmosphere is relaxing (even with rush hour happening on Foothill just outside) and I think that has to do with the gentle kindness of the elderly couple in charge. For the slightly lower than average prices charged compared to other similar places, the food is good. I had 2 glasses of an easy to enjoy Sauvignon blanc with my soup and was very satisfied. I took extra sushi and seaweed salad home for lunch tomorrow and the tab was just over $40. I'll happily go back. read more

You walk in and there's a cute little bar towards the back, not too much room for seating but luckily I came early. Between 2 of us we ordered dragon roll, hamachi dinner, chicken teriyaki dinner, and chicken karaage to start. Everything was so delicious. Really sweet couple running this small restaurant. I asked to sit by the sushi bar where we were served an assortment of nigiri before our combo entrees. The nigiri has a little bit rice heavy, but not the worst - since the rice is actually really good (and those who know me, I take sushi rice seriously). Sukiyaki & karaage combo for the price is insanely good. I wish there were some more ingredients like shiitake mushrooms, but I totally understand why it doesn't include it at the price. The karaage is also very juicy and crisp - I ate it with just a little bit of lemon and soy sauce. Very filling, great prices, and really nice owners. read more

The best Ojiichan and Obaachan shop I've found in the bay. Don't come here expecting high end sushi and attentive service. Are the nigiris pretty? No, but for the cost the flavor of their neta and shari are great. The chef isn't a professional sushi chef and he knows that. Why else would the sushi be so cheap here. But you can tell he puts a lot of care and effort into making them. Notice all these baka Gaijins complaining about the looks of their food and the service being slow. Please don't come as the owners aren't trying to make big bucks with their business and they already have more than enough customers they can handle. After my experience here, I vow to always stop to check out these small spots at least once. I've passed by this restaurant for years but today... was different. This place feels like home. As soon as you walk in you're met with smiling faces and the atmosphere is so cozy. There isn't a lot of room so the setting feels very intimate. Perfect for a date or a small party. The restaurant is ran by the owners themselves and they are the sweetest couple. The wife is the waitress and the husband is the sushi chef. The incredible duo. I ordered the rainbow roll and the Hamachi mango roll, hand crafted by the charismatic and funny husband of a sushi chef. The quality was made from love and the prices are great. Good for budgeting but they don't skimp the quality. Go here if you're looking for nice quiet dinner, a solo lunch, a cozy and intimate setting for a date, or a small group of friends looking for quality sushi. Say hello to the owners too! Had dinner at this establishment Friday night with some friends. The place was packed, but didn't have to wait for a table. My friends said they liked the place and would come back. I am not sure that I would. Pros: 1. Food wasn't bad. Karaage was on point and my favorite was the beef teriyaki from the Wakamatsu Special. 2. Friendly staff. Cons: 1. No draft beer as I was craving for it. We got bottles of Sapporo instead. 2. Tuna sashimi that came with the Wakamatsu Special was disappointing. Not sure if this was a fluke, but suspicious about their sashimi quality. 3. Service was a bit slow. Since they were busy, it was difficult to get the servers' attention. 4. Rolls were a little small. We ordered dragon rolls and lion king rolls twice... since we were still hungry after finished them the first time. read more

Can't believe I've never been here despite being closeby! The elderly couple who runs this place are so so nice! The food is deeelish and the value for their lunch is amazing. Where else can you get a quality bento lunch for $11? Service was quick as we were the 2nd group who came in. They did turn others away because they only had seating for 3 groups (1 group took up 2 tables) and a few bar seats. Food: I loved everything, especially the tempura! It's light and just perfectly coated. The dipping sauce was delish as well. The CA roll was delish, although it's not made with real crab as suggested by others' reviews, but we didn't mind. The miso soup was deeelish, and they put little tempura crunchies in there so that was pretty unexpected and awesome. We enjoyed the karaage but the pieces were really large. The beef teriyaki was pretty good, and it looks like they use beef short ribs, although I preferred the other items more. Parking: plenty of spaces in their parking lot and street parking. read more

Came to Wakamatsu for dinner on a Friday evening. It was really 3.5 stars, but went with 4 because of the servers. The restaurant is REALLY small so not a lot of tables, only 2-3 tables that could seat 4 people. It's also really hot inside the restaurant if it's hot outside! We really liked and appreciated the service and that's it's a mom n pop local place in Hayward. The sukiyaki was pretty good as was the salmon. The seafood nabe was also good. The sashimi was not as good - it wasn't plated well like what generally find in Japanese restaurants and was also at room temperature. The Saporo was cold! The dinner prices are pretty low. I've lived in this area for like 8ish years and drove by this place all the time on my way home. I never went because it's in one of the most inconvenient places on foothill where you quickly have to merge like 4 lanes over to make 3 right turns just to get into their parking lot. Worth it though. We got their karaage bento and the wakamatsu special for dinner and it was all amazing. Karaage was probably the best I've had. Super tender and fatty and melts in your mouth. Got gyoza that tasted funny. Was waiting (more than 30 min) for sushi rolls. Saw a cockroach. Told them we had to leave but would pay for any food that had already been wasted. The server informed me that I needed to pay for the whole order, even though they hadn't started prepping it. I responded with, "You haven't prepared the food, and I have not eaten it. I'm offering to pay for anything you would've wasted. We need to leave." I didn't want to rudely announce in front of their other guests that we were leaving because there was a nasty cockroach in the dining area. She told the cook (presumably her husband) to tell me something. He tried to get us to stay and eat the food. "We need to leave. We are leaving. I'm offering to pay." He explained that this was a waste of their ingredients and asked if he could prep the rest of the food and put it in a to go container. I said, "No, I'm okay." He spat back, "Good!" Our party of 4 walked in on a Saturday a bit less than an hour after the restaurant opened (5:50PM) and the waitress told us we can wait half an hour for a table so we waited at the entrance. 5 minutes later, a party of 2 came in and waited in line behind us. After some time, the elderly female owner came and asked us if we had a reservation. We said we didn't but that the waitress already said we could wait for a table. She proceeded to tell us to leave since the kitchen is full which didn't make sense because 2 tables paid and were about to leave. I said to her that the waitress told us we could wait 30 minutes, she then yelled at the waitress "Why did you tell them 30 minutes?". The waitress said "I told the party of 2" which is untrue because when we walked in it was just our party of 4 waiting and she told us we could wait. The owner kept saying the kitchen is full and skipped us to talk to the other party of 2 who didn't have a reservation either but said they can seat them. We asked if we could split our party since she kept saying they had space for 2, and she just kept shooing us away saying "No", "No", "No" multiple times. Absolutely unacceptable from a restaurant owner and unprofessional, would not recommend this place at all. Not sure if it's racism, because our party was 3 asians and 1 caucasian, but this place does not deserve any more business. It's a small restaurant with only 4 to 5 tables. The interior feels old but very clean and cute. The server is a cute Japanese grandma and the chef is a cute Japanese grandpa. Food presentation is humble, it makes you wonder is this gonna be good at first, but after you take a bite, you know it's good quality. Don't get the rainbow roll. It was very small, and had nothing inside the roll... it was rice wrapped around nori? No avocado, no crab, not even cucumber. Not sure how that counts as a roll. I pointed it out to the waitress, who confirmed that that was not an error. However, looking at other Yelp reviews, I see photos that show the roll with avocado in it. ...? Bizarre. Just having a blob of nori in my rice each bite was just a weird texture. The fish was also pretty scraggly, though the intact pieces tasted fresh. To sum it up... don't get the rainbow roll. Out of the many sushi restaurants in the East Bay (and Bay Area) that I've frequented, this is one of my favorites as it is family run, reminds me of the ojiisan/obassan places in Japan, and offers decent and fresh fish at affordable prices. The atmosphere is unpretentious and humble with service offered at a slower pace so leave any sense of urgency at the door. They tend to get busy with sushi take out orders around the same time Fridays and Saturdays (6pm-ish?) so try to get there before or after if you're wanting sushi on those days and can't wait. We came here on a busy Saturday night. I'll def have to come back when they aren't so busy- not sure when that would be, though, as the place is tiny- holds 30 people max. I'm guessing this place has been here forever. Everything is super dated inside- along with the prices. Everything is pretty cheap compared to other sushi places in the area. One man show for sushi behind the counter and I imagine one in the back cooking. The food took a while, but understandably so. The miso soup was served hot- and I love that! I hate when places serve it up like warm . We ordered a few rolls and the special bento box. It was good, as expected. My rolls weren't rolled too tightly cuz they started to fall apart- but still tasted good. I'd def try it out on a weekday or something-give it another shot. I hope it impresses me a little more. Always drove by here, but have never been able to try it until today. Walking in, you immediately felt the homeliness of the place. You can feel some history in the building, which has a worn yet intimate feel. A few of the tables were taken so we asked if we could sit at the counter, which the owner (who I now know is named Joey) kindly greeted us. A friendly young waitress offered quick service on our beer and tea. I ordered the California roll/white tuna combo with sukiyaki while my wife ordered the chirashi with some grilled scallops. Although the food wasn't fancy or showy, we watched Joey take great care and attention cutting each slice of fish. The food itself was delicious, fresh and very affordable! There is a lot of quick banter between the wife and husband duo, along with the waitress which added interesting conversation and made me feel right at home.
