I ate here recently when I met up with a friend for lunch. Shoutout to the friend for the suggestion, because Roman Bistro is a bit out of my way as a South Hills girl; I'm not sure I ever would have made it out here without the invite. I took a peak at the menu online before the lunch date and gosh darn it, I knew immediately that I would have a hard time choosing what to order. Pasta, meatballs, sandwiches...it all looked really good! Since I knew I had dinner plans the same day, I opted to stick with the Greens and Beans and the bruschetta two appetizers made for a great meal. The vegetables and spinach were braised in garlic butter, which was the perfect addition to the dish; and I had no complaints about the bruschetta. It's bread and tomatoes and a sprinkling of cheese - short of burning the bread, it's bound to be the perfect comfort food! Other than waiting a bit longer than expected for our table's bottle of water to be refilled and returned, my friend and I had absolutely no complaints and had a great lunch. A quick note: based on their website, it appears they also have gluten free options and even a Sunday brunch and buffet. (Granted, it's the 2020s so who knows if the buffet is operating these days?) I haven't taken a look at the other reviews, but if there's praise for the gluten free options, then I think it's safe to say this restaurant offers a tasty experience all around. I'll definitely have this eatery in mind the next time I'm passing through. And If I were in the area and dined here again, I'd definitely want to order the ravioli and maybe some meatballs - given the delicious appetizers, I have a good feeling about the rest of the menu! read more

Working dinner brought me here. Our waitress was amazingly friendly. We were in a back table for 3-4 hours on an empty weeknight. Ordered a variety of apps for the table which were all solid but nothing overly memorable. The main course, however, was one of my favorite combos I tried on an Italian menu ever...hot sausage stuffed pepper ravioli in a red pepper vodka sauce. I added salmon as well. That's one of those items where you go back again to try something new but get sucked in and order the same thing twice. I'll definitely be back. read more

Another lovely spot for dinner- First time here & I'll certainly return. Started at the bar with a Whisky Sour/ made perfectly. Dinner included the following - all of which were excellent...meat lovers flatbread minus ham; chicken dip; pecan & pear salad with shrimp? Rueben with sweet potato fries; Italian wedding soup. We dined with a large group the night of the Kentucky Derby. The restaurant and bar were very busy. Our waitress kept up with everyone's appetizers, drinks and dinners, which is no all feat. My wife and my pasta dinners were very good. The lemon cello topped off the evening. Competent service, good food, and wonderful hospitality are a winning combination. I do enjoy going to this place. They have the best salads ever and the presentation from the chef is always amazing. It was a Saturday afternoon. I was surprised cause it was very slow. I guess it's the Fourth of July weekend. I get it. The service was impeccable. I got a crabcake that was mostly crab. That was awesome. I love how they present their water cause it comes out in a bottle. I also asked for a cucumbers and my server cut them up cute he was very attentive and very on point great service. I asked the ad state cause you have choices and I was told that they were out of steak That surprised me for a restaurant to be out of steak, but I get it sometimes things could be hard I noticed, though that the managers walked around a lot then they asked about your service, which was nice. The food is always very good here At our last visit, our server had a large table of guests in The other room that was taking most of her attention. It took 45 min to get our food with I only got a refill of coffee once. After waiting the 45 min for the food to arrive. Our server asked if we needed anything else which was a little funny because she had not given us utensils yet. I think because of her pre occupation with the other table she completely forgot the basics with us. As I said already, the food was very good, once we got it , the service could have been better. The only problem with this restaurant is that they can't handle walk ins without hassling you for not making a reservation. If you do walk in without a reservation, be prepared to get the third degree from the hostess. We have learned to always get a reservation! This restaurant has a great atmosphere, always clean and the decor is trendy. We eat here once or twice a month. read more

Roman Bistro is a gem in the eastern suburbs. We just celebrated our 53rd Anniversary with them taking advantage of their weekend Valentines Specials (our actual anniversary is on Valentines Day). The meal was excellent and our server Koen was a very pleasant fellow & quite attentive. The attention to detail and specials, wishes from Rose Roman and manager Ashley were much appreciated. Steadily getting worse food quality! It pains me to write this as I am a fan.I was a regular at Roman Bistro when I lived in Forest Hills for 20 yrs. Roman Bistro was a favorite especially the Prime Rib special. However the quality of the 3 dishes I just bought were horrific and this was a downward trend I have been seeing for the last year. Is there new ownership? Is there a new chef or lack of one? . Mind you whenever I visit one of my rental properties in FH, I order lunch or dinner before heading back, Perhaps because I added a $5 tip this time to the take out vs the $15 to my $120 takeout order perhaps? - App: calamari : served in a dessert sized container instead of the normal size dish : Literally 10 salty rings with green/red sautéed peppers in a LOT of oil. The oil pooled in the bottom of the bowl was not tasty and had an off flavor. (Needs changing?). The breading was soggy not crispy. No octopi or squid tentacles for authentic texture. All for. $15.00 ? Not worth it at all and is a totally different experience when I get it sitting down at the bar waiting for my order to-go order to be made. - Lemon Chicken Asparagus: where do I begin as how horrid this was and a missed opportunity. The oil was so pervasive made this inedible. I had to use a paper towel to remove most of the oil (not butter) from the under cooked rubbery angel hair and 1 pcs of chopped asparagus. The chicken was so well done I gave a piece to my dog and she had to sit down and actually chew it like she was going after a rawhide bone... yes I'm serious. ($27.00!!!) - Prime Rib Special with 2 sides: 1 baked potato and broccoli: ordered medium rare: Meat: burnt charcoal crust I had to scrape off, and so much salt and seasoning (without the au jus) I had to literally Wash the meat to make it palatable. baked potatoe: literally 1 whitenpotatirnwith the skin on, boiled without any fixings or dressings. I mean take a regular white skinned potatoes stick it in the microwave and put it in your plate. Broccoli: can we say fork tender? Being charitable. Mind you I wait for this special and time my visits to Forest Hills as best I can just so I can order this... $47.00. Jesus. Osso Bucco: mind you my standard is from my visit to Siena Italy eating this at a local Resturant overlooking the Piazza del Campo, so I get it is unusually high. But this? Oily cheese sauce with 2 halves of yellow sauce and a flavorless lamb shank whose only positive was it was for tender? The shank was cut wrong so I couldn't even enjoy the marrow... a staple standard part of any Osso Bucco made! (27.00!!!) I couldn't I was excited to give it to my son and told him this should be good because it's an italian dish! I told him this isn't even close and will have to try somewhere else to experience what it really should taste like. Ok normally I'm a huge fan, and tell people it's one of the only options for high quality food and atmosphere in Forest Hills but I fear they have jumped the shark or something in the kitchen. What happened?! please fix this! Now I provide caveats and qualifiers to the recommendation or tell them to go to Regents Square. Service: ok I have to say my experience with the new manager was not overly pleasant either. I happen to be dressed in my work boots as I was cleaning out my storage garage for my teams managing my properties and when I walked in she visually dressed me up and down as if I was a vagrant homeless person coming into the Resturant. (That's why I get take out and don't sit down!) Either way it was not the normal welcoming experience from the front of the house I usually get. Perhaps it was Sunday and the good people were off? I don't know. What I do know is this is the 3rd time I bought from them recently that the food quality was steadily worsening and a waste of my time and money. To say it was over priced is not even the worst of it. First Drew's quality is gone and now Roman Bistro? I'll just save my money and pick something up from one of the new restaurants in Regents Square which will be more delicious and surprisingly less expensive. Mr. Roman - please fix this and revitalize your food quality! What is going on?! It pains me to feel compelled to write this about a favorite place of mine. I will check in again, but likely only try the "special" prime rib... Sadly, li'm now seriously looking for another alternative when I drive to that side of the city. read more

Great experience for a party of 6 showing up around 7p on a Saturday Night. They were pretty quick to find a spot to accommodate us and luckily it wasn't outside on the patio on a chilly December night. After being seated, the waitress Megan promptly took and filled our drink orders. She was on top of refills throughout the evening as we were all particularly thirsty from a day of running around town. They have a pretty extensive menu from Italian favorites (lasagna, manicotti, bolognese, veal, and chicken) to burgers and sandwiches. They also have a kids menu for the smaller appetites. Stuffed Banana Peppers - These were spicy which is awesome. Some places are afraid to do spice and I'm glad these had some heat! The filling was plentiful and the melted cheese on top was quality stuff. Gnocchi and Sausage - Since the girl ordering wasn't a fan of sausage, they were able to substitute meatballs instead. She loved it. The meatballs were loosely packed and clearly homemade. The gnocchi was dense like I remember growing up, so it filled you up fast! The vodka sauce went well with it. Kids Mac N Cheese - It was a nice sized portion that didn't get finished. When a kid doesn't finish something, it's either too much or it wasn't that good. I didn't ask him. Chicken Anthony - This had lots of chicken and was packed with flavor from all of the ingredients (goat cheese, sun dried tomatoes, basil, lemon). I didn't think the wife would finish it but it was gone (not in 60 seconds). Blackened Prime Rib Sandwich - I didn't try this one, but it looked amazing. It was at the far end of the table so I didn't get a good picture. It looked like an amazing steak sandwich though. Turkey Devonshire - Two people at the table ordered this (if you're paying attention, that's 1/3). This was the reason I wanted to come. The size was a bit underwhelming so I was glad I got an appetizer, but it was absolutely delicious. The sandwich is a Pittsburgh thing and few restaurants are doing it. The turkey was moist and had some crispiness from being under the broiler. The bacon was crisp and the bread was thick. The cheesy sauce ladled on top soaked through and gave the dish the burst of gooey flavor that held it all together. The fresh tomatoes on top cut through the dense sauce. I was happy as I hadn't had one of these in many many years and probably didn't appreciate it very much way back then. This is a foodie dish for sure. The prices are pretty reasonable for the quality of the food. They have a decent sized parking lot right next door, and the staff was amazing with their service and making sure we enjoyed everything. read more

This was our first time visiting the Roman Bistro. We stumbled upon this pub style Italian restaurant by chance. And it did not disappoint! After a warm welcome and a lovely window table we were greeted by the sweetest server named Raya. Not only was she super knowledgeable about the menu, but she also was super accommodating. I started off with the pear and pecan salad. A perfect crisp combination topped with a delicious vinaigrette. My husband ordered the seafood platter. Wow, it was huge and super delicious. I ordered the most tender chicken marsala and decided to pair it with grilled veggies. I could smell the marsala wine the second she put my dish down. It was creamy, sweet, and very savory. I was overly surprised at how much I enjoyed this impromptu dinner. And to top it off our server brought us over curtsy lemon cello shots after we finished our meals. I have noticed that this restaurant is quite popular, as the parking lot is always busy whenever I pass by. After hearing so much about it, my husband and I decided to dine in recently. Unfortunately, we were disappointed with our experience. We both ordered the lasagna with a side salad. Regrettably, the lasagna did not meet our expectations. The meat had a gravy-like sauce, and there was very little cheese and sauce overall. We found it less enjoyable compared to other frozen options we've tried. Let me start off by saying that I cannot deny the food is good. I have eaten here a few times and have not been disappointed in the food. That being said, the service and way they treat their customers is bad enough for me never to return. Especially after our group visit today. A friend of mine recently had her leg amputated and because she was finally healed and able to get out, she chose to have her celebratory lunch with friends at Roman Bistro, because her prosthetic arrives in a few days. There were 12 of us and she made the reservation a week in advance. When the first girl arrived they said they didn't have it, but the place was pretty empty so they threw something weird together (the tables didn't fit together at all, and the middle small one didn't have a tablecloth). By the time we were all seated, none of us had napkins or silverware, but the server wasn't even paying attention to us, she was just cleaning up some other table. The server was a female with short hair, large gauge ear plugs a semi-colon tattoo on her arm and a horrible attitude. She never gave us her name. We had to ask for more bread twice because she didn't bring enough for everyone at the table. The second time, she said, "Ok so in addition to MORE BREAD and cheese, anything else?" and a girl on the other end of the table said, "Yes, more bread please," because she didn't hear her...and the server rudely remarked, "like I said...IN ADDITION TO MORE BREAD AND CHEESE." It was just unnecessary and rude. The food took over an hour to come out and it was so staggered that the first bunch of people's food was cold by the time everyone had their food (yes everyone was well mannered enough to wait til everyone had their food to eat). A few of us had pasta, and the bread we requested didn't even come out until after we were done eating. And then when we got the bill, they charged us for the extra bread! When we pointed out to the server that we were charged for extra bread she said , yeah that's how it is, and I told her they should really let people know if that is the case because we didn't even get it until we were done eating, and usually places that serve bread don't charge for another basket, so people wouldn't know. She said, "Yeah well, we are instructed to NOT let you know." So another lady at our table called the manager over (a woman with chin length brown hair) and we explained the situation to her and thought she would just apologize in the least...but to our horror, she said, "Correct, they don't need to tell people because it says so in the menu." MInd you...the menu is like 8 pages long...the pages that say "lunch or dinner" aren't actually served at lunch, it's a limited menu, but they don't tell you that when they hand you the menu. Honestly, the manager could have been empathetic and understanding and told us she would talk to the server about her attitude, but instead, she basically was on the same page that they ruthlessly deceive the customers and don't care. She definitely didn't have the demeanor a of a proper restaurant manager. We had asked for separate checks and they wouldn't let us do it, and tagged on 20% gratuity for the terrible service. I run a very successful restaurant in the city and had heard horror stories such as these about the Bistro, but went back a couple times because the food was decent....however...this type of blatant disregard for customer service is something I won't tolerate. There are plenty of good Italian restaurants in Pittsburgh. We will not be returning here. As a side note, when I told one of my employees what had happened, she said her and her friend got kicked out of the restaurant because her brother had a service dog. He is deaf and has seizures, and they wouldn't let them stay because of his service dog. I don't even think that's legal to be honest. That's straight up discrimination. read more

A group from my church had a celebration luncheon there in October. There were 15 of us. The room where we were placed was a little tight, but it worked out. The food and service were great. We came here for restaurant week! It was priced at $40.xx for a 3 course meal. I started with the ceviche and it was good but I think there was only one large shrimp in it. There was calamari as well. Next I got the Chilean sea bass with angel hair pasta! The sea bass was cool perfectly and it came way a lot of pasta! The pasta was a butter pasta with capers. The scone was for dessert. It was ok. The have a bar area right when you walk in and a nice patio up front for our door seating, the hostess was nice and waiter was friendly but he did forget to bring my friends hummus appetizer. Also they had bread and olive oil for the table which I really enjoyed. I will have to try this place again and try a real Italian dish next time! read more
