I don't get the lower reviews. For Italian food this place is really authentic... especially the pies. I'm southern Italian and it's just like the pizza we have had in Bari. Thinner crust, well cooked and the whole pie is delicious. If you like those Chicago style pizzas go to Chicago. The salad which was really amazingly fresh, tasty and unique was a peach and burratta salad with arugula, cherry tomatoes with those teeny bits of walnuts. Pretty incredible. On Monday apparently they discount their incredible pies. The ambiance is warm, inviting. Service was a ten. Great spot in Oakmont! This was a first time for my friends and I and we will absolutely be back . The food was delicious and presented very well for the most part. (Pictured), we ordered the meatballs, large house salad , broccoli , Neapolitan pizza, Caesar fries , zeppole, tiramisu cheesecake , and chocolate ricotta cake. Caesar fries were AMAZING . I'm one to add fries to my Caesar salads so this dish was perfect. Pizza to die for . Broccoli cooked and presented perfectly . Meatballs served with an smooth tasty sauce . House salad was just OK. Nothing special for $13. Zeppole didn't have a ton of taste to it . Tiramisu cheesecake and chocolate cake delicious ! Our service wasn't that great to be honest . We had to ask for a lot of items a few times .. sharing plates, silverware , and boxes . As a server /bartendar, I know these things should be given automatically . To be honest , the booth we were sat in by the kitchen / restroom entrance was odd. Very hot beside that pizza station and very busy considering the placement of the table being next to the kitchen. I went with five old high school friends for one of our monthly luncheons.The service was attentive and quick. The huge pizza oven fire illuminated the back of the restaurant and gave a cozy warmth on a cold winter day. The portions were huge and the food was very good! I grew up in the Oakmont area and had actually never been to Michael A's until recently. And I'm glad I finally went. We sat at the bar on a busy weekend night but even with a full bar and being by themselves, the bartender was super attentive. They had a nice selection of specialty cocktails. They also had maybe some of the best appetizers I've had in a long time. The Italian Bread Dumplings were insanely good and like nothing I've ever had. And the Crispy Caesar Fries were loaded with flavor. All of the fries had dressing on them and were loaded with cheese. For my main coarse, I had Chicken Parmesan. It was a gigantic helping. So I read a lot of reviews before heading to Michael A's; it's clear they had a very loyal customer base (for decades) and a lot of people don't feel like it lives up to the way it "used to be" ... I get it. Change is hard. I went in with uncertain expectations but high hopes (had heard great things from co-workers)! Our evening started so well: - Service was spot-on (Cassie was great ... really attentive and polite) - Cocktails were good (Italian Mule and Espresso Martini) - Salads were SPECTACULAR and so so big (my husband and I took half of each of ours home ... Michael A's Wedge and Grilled Peach and Burrata Caprese) The bar was set high and we were excited for our entrees ... unfortunately that's where things started to fall short: - Chicken Romano: chicken was good (definitely needed to use the lemon wedge that I usually ignore as a garnish!) but the pasta really fell short (a bit overcooked and very under seasoned). I really needed to add a lot of salt and pepper and it was still underwhelming - Chicken Parmesan: my husband was really disappointed; overcooked pasta and just all-around bland. Was served with the chicken UNDER the bland pasta, so made it hard to find a redeeming quality. He also added a lot of salt and pepper, and he never does that. - Dessert (was nice that it was comped because of tough feedback we gave on the entrees ... Cassie took the feedback with grace and concern): tiramisu cheesecake (not much flavor - only ate a couple of bites) and Zeppole (overcooked outside and undercooked inside ... raspberry sauce looked delicious but tasted unbalanced) All things considered we did enjoy our time here and will actually be back ... we'll just order more strategically (stick to salads and skip dessert). Really hope they can figure out their pastas/sauces though ... hard for an Italian restaurant to make it without solid pasta dishes! Finally got out to the new and updated Michael A's! Food was as good as it was before, switched up a little but nothing negative. Alfredo was amazing, my fiancé loved the chicken! Cacio e pepe was DELICIOUS I can't wait to eat this again. House salad was just as good as the usual, as you can see the bread offerings are also to die for. We finished with the tiramisu cheesacake which oh my god.... Was so good. The inside is so cute it definitely was busy but rightfully so! I can't wait to come back and try more! read more

First, I want to say that our service was outstanding. The restaurant wasn't packed so it was nice. We ordered the meatball appetizer and it was delicious! The bread with butter and dipping oil was also very good. My boyfriend ordered the wedding soup and I order the house salad. The soup was underwhelming but my salad was reminiscent of the Michael A's of old. He ordered the gnocchi with meat sauce for dinner and I ordered the chicken romano. This is where it all went wrong. The orecchiette that accompanied my chicken romano was flavorless and the chicken romano itself tasted like scrambled eggs. Doused it in lemon, Parmesan cheese and salt & pepper and just couldn't get over it. The meat sauce on the gnocchi was terrible as well. It was truly a waste of time and money unfortunately. 5 people very disappointed in their dinners. The 6 ravioli were very small!! The veal marsala carbonara had good flavor but the veal pieces were few & very thin!! The broccolini was burnt and shriveled! The chicken Alfredo had way too much garlic in it and the chicken was not freshly cooked, it was dry as could be!!. We made a reservation for a Thursday night at 5:30. They said we didn't have a reservation and the two young women just stalled. I asked, "Do we need a reservation?" The place was clearly not hopping. They seemed reluctant to say no? We were seated and food and service were adequate. I love wedding soup and got some to go instead of eating it there. Disappointed is not the word. It was meatballs in chicken stock with 3 pieces of kale. It was totally tasteless. My review is mixed. We're local so I'm sure we'll be back, but I hope for a different experience next time. read more

Oakmont,Pa The lasagna is wonderful. There is enough for 3 people. It's filled with meat and cheese and homemade pasta. It's truly excellent. We were there at 2:15 the only diners until another table came in about 30 minutes later. Server was nice but not really attentive My sister went to the bar for another glass of wine because the server wasn't there. He was very nice but...... I had wanted the Cacio de Pepe but it was no longer on the menu. The server said it had been replaced with the Pomodoro. I didn't know whether to order the Alfredo or the Pomodoro. I ended up with the Pomodoro which was unimpressive. The pasta was excellent but nothing to recommend it. The Tiramisu is Excellent! The inside is a very nice atmosphere. read more

Was excited to try Michael A's again after the renovations. One positive is that it looks great from the outside and inside, they did a great job sprucing the place up. Unfortunately it was all downhill from there. Made a reservation on a Monday night with Open Table. We only were given the option of upstairs dining (though many open tables were available on the first floor). The entrance is a huge bottleneck, even just standing there for 60 seconds we were were in the way of so many people in every direction. The long staircase was a little bit of a challenge for my parents. The dining area upstairs is crowded and very loud. Our waitress did not seem to have much knowledge of the limited menu. Service was honestly pretty awful, our waitress seemed to be covering most of the upstairs and was avoiding eye contact with us as she walked by. Everything took forever to come out as well. I will never order a Dirty Gibson again (that one is probably my fault though) and the oil that came with the bread had a really odd overseasoned taste. The chicken parm was just an enormous piece of lightly breaded chicken with very bland red sauce. It was also not hot. It's certainly on the pricy side here. We paid with cash and needed change but our waitress was nowhere to be found and after about 10 minutes we just ended up leaving her a very good tip that was definitely not deserved. I love supporting Oakmont business and I understand that they are still working on things here but I do not plan on going back anytime soon. read more

Absolutely awful meal... Vinny the bartender makes awesome drinks. The waitstaff excellent . My meal was god awful.The shrimp polenta was pricey at $34. It was not edible. Took three bites. Ate the shrimp and pushed the rest to the other side of the plate. was told no refund should have sent it back at two bites. Others got Veal Marsla: overcooked. Veal parm : overcooked and dry no sauce . Chicken parm: overcooked no side sauce. We were so disappointed as Marty Griffin touts them daily on his radio show. Will never return..... Plus the cost of drinks and the meal terrible public policy. Not owning up to it shame on them and you. What a shame . I will never return and I will never recommend.... read more

Dinner was delicious, the meatballs are spiced nicely. The veal was tender and preapred and presented beautifully. We sat near the pizza oven, so had the pleasure of talking to Ray and learning more about pizza, as I also make from scratch. Service was great, efficient and friendly. The noise level was low so easy to have a comfortable conversation across the table and with Ray. Restaurant has been remodeled and very well done! Would highly recommend place, and if you are lucky enough to sit near pizza oven, well worth conversing with Ray. In addition, Oakmont's brick lined street is charming. read more

This was our first time at Michael A's Restaurant in Oakmont, PA, since it was opened under new management. Everything was ala carte on the "large plate" menu. The "small plate" menu was really a new name for appetizers. One of our people ordered fried zucchini. Because there was a good deal left, our waiter asked if he could box it for her to take home. She said great to boxing the leftover zucchini. Three of us ordered eggplant parmigiana. It wasn't hot at all. It was tough because of the thickness and skin of the eggplant, bitter and pretty seedy too. Another ordered Michael A's Classic Spaghetti, which was just that, a plate of spaghetti. She got a bowl of wedding soup with it and the cost of spaghetti and soup was $24. Pretty pricey for spaghetti and soup. Five pieces of bread with roasted garlic and olive oil dipping sauce, and 2 pats of butter was for the table. The other guest ordered a pepperoni pizza. She said it was just alright, but wouldn't order it again. So the gal with the leftover zucchini asked for her box as we were going to leave and the waiter was very apologetic, but said that he couldn't find it and that it must've been thrown away! There was no offer to make her even 1/2 an order to take home! That zucchini was $15. A simple apology just doesn't seem like a fair trade-off! I would've given it much less than 1*, but that option wasn't available. I can absolutely say that that was a "one and done" visit to Michael A's in Oakmont! read more

Couldn't wait to try the new Michael A's during the grand opening week. Beautiful renovation but totally different menu and disappointing. It's a glorified pizza parlor and bar with tapas portions of food at expensive prices. My husband enjoyed the Montepuciano wine but the Long Island iced tea was served in a Collins glass and not very good at all; was missing sours or juice, it was clear like iced tea with poor flavor. Everything was ala cart and very small portions. Did not have choices like the old Michael A's only the 4 pasta dishes and dinner for 2 was pricey. It's loud and noisy and a bit crowded if you sit near the bar. The best part of the evening was our waitress Sarah who explained how the menu worked and told us that people ordered and shared it the truth is if you share you go home hungry. Michael A's is a classic old school, neighborhood Italian restaurant. Great food at a fair price. This was our third visit and it has been solid each time. Service always very attentive. This visit we started with sausage stuffed peppers. Three medium sized peppers, good for two people. The peppers were definitely hot. Our entrees this time were sautéed scallops and veal braciole. The scallops were sautéed with peppers and onions, perfectly done. Braciole was thin veal strips stuffed with a mix of ground beef and ground veal, topped with tomato sauce. Entrees are served with soup, salad and one side. All in all another excellent meal. read more

Our family dues not order red sauce out because we think ours is the best and we know what we like in our sauce! Well, I had polenta last night with a marinara sauce that was definitely as good as ours! It was delicious. I did not have a chance to tell the chef so I hope he sees this! Our table loved their greens and beans, the eggplant and the pasta dishes and salads. Three of the six of us are Italian and we love the food here. Have been here before and it is always consistently delicious. Tyler was our excellent server and is always on top of his A game. The bartenders were outstanding too. Went to Michael A's for the first time since it reopened after being closed for years to renovate. We Ate downstairs which has been beautifully opened up and decorated. It was very drafty on a cold night especially every time the door opened. The menu has been retooled and much smaller. Once known for excellent food which came with soup and salad and a side has changed to ala carte. This essential has more than doubled their prices! With so many decent Italian restaurants In the area I fear they have priced themselves out of the market. We tried the Veal Marsala and Veal Romano ($19)which were both very good and each added a small salad ($8). These meals were around $20 previously so now $27 without a side. Instead of dining here 1-2 times a month I think I may go 1-2 times a year. Yes they needed to increase the prices but this is absurd! It went from eating a great meal at your Nonni's to just another fancy overpriced place with great atmosphere and decent food. read more

Who doesn't love a map of Italy as your place mat? I can't say enough about the little gem called Michael A's. It is spot on every time that we have been there. It is not a fancy-pants italian place trying to sell you on some new wave dinners. It is simple, original Italian fare. Every week my mom would make home made red sauce, so I have some high standards. This is one of the only red sauces that I will order out. It is sweet, but not overly so and you have a choice or meat or marinara. There are may things that I enjoy about Michael A's but here are some highlights: 1. Sometimes Michael himself welcomes you (if he isn't in the front, he is making the food.) 2. Each meal comes with a salad AND (Not OR, AND) soup (if you are ordering pasta. Entrees come with a side and a soup or salad) 3. The pasta is always cooked to perfection. A little al dente, but never soggy. 4. The prices can't be beat. My go-to spaghetti and meatball is $11. Remember that comes with soup and a salad and bread is waiting for you at the table. Entrees range from $10-25, and you leave full every time or fill up on soup and salad and have a meal to take home. Step outside the city for a fun date night in Old Italia. Love this place and get take out from there often. You really get a lot for your money and their staff is friendly as well. I have also gotten caroling from there and they really gave me a great deal for so much food! I mostly order the fish, trout and lemon sole and they are delicious, their pasta is also pretty decent, the sauce is a marina (lighter tomato) and great flavor. I am picky with my sauces and they definitely meet the list! Will keep ordering from them in the future as well. It's a hidden gem in Oakmont! read more
