Came here with my girlfriend and my daughter. My daughter and I had never been here and my girlfriend said it had been years since she had been here. We were seated in the dining room. First impression was that the color scheme, decorations, and menu all seemed to be dated and uninspired. The staff were polite and attentive. I ordered the salad and Salmon Oscar. The salad was good and the blue cheese dressing I chose was house-made. It was good. My girlfriend got the wedge salad which I think was a bit expensive since it was a $6 up charge for a wedge of iceberg lettuce from the standard salad that came with the entrees. My Salmon Oscar with asparagus was very good. I enjoyed every bite of the salmon and crab. My daughter's chicken parm came with a ton of linguini. My girlfriend got the signature crab cakes which she said were mostly crab and not filler. So while I thought the menu was dated when reading it the food was well executed. read more

Hadn't been here for two years but we were across the street buying a new recliner at Lazy Boy so we headed over for lunch. First the good news. My wedding soup and my husband's French onion soup were delicious. The wedding soup was loaded with meatballs and chicken. My husband has a thing for French onion soup and tries it every chance he gets. He said this may have been the best ever. We split a Reuben sandwich and upgraded to onion rings. The waitress brought us each a half portion so we didn't have to divide it ourselves, which was nice. There was plenty of meat on the sandwich, making it acceptable, not great but good enough. Onion rings were very good. Dessert sounded tempting, a cherry crème brûlée. It was okay, kind of like cherry jello with a sugar crust on top. A bit disappointing to say the least. Our waitress was on top of filling the water glasses and was very nice. Now for the bad news and why I'm only giving 3 stars. I went to the ladies room before eating and there was no hot water to wash my hands. I asked my husband if the men's room had hot water and he said no. We both let it run but it never got hot, not even warm. Then I noticed (after drinking several glasses of water unfortunately) that there was a crack in my water glass. I mentioned it to my husband and he said, "you should see the chips in the glass tabletop over her on my side". I get it that wear and tear happens, but these things should be caught before serving guests. And as far as the hot water...how do servers and kitchen workers properly clean their hands after using the toilet without hot water? So the food is fairly solid and reasonably priced. But be on the lookout for chipped glassware and table tops. And use your own hand sanitizer if you have it! read more

In the area to attend a convention and we wanted to eat somewhere that was local not a chain restaurant. We found this hidden gem online and the menu sounded delicious! We arrived after 8pm and had to wait for the hostess to come back to her station. (The waitstaff had to go hunt her down once they saw we were just standing there.) No reservation, but they had plenty of tables available (shocking to us since it's a Friday night.) Our waitress, Jennifer, was so very friendly and professional. She kept my husband's drink filled throughout our stay. They have sparkling spring water available, so I ordered that. My Crab & Shrimp on gluten-free spaghetti with white wine sauce was so delicious I was literally sad when it was all gone. My husband loved his chicken parmigiana and topped his meal off with a slice of lemon cake for dessert. Light and delicious. Excellent choices on the menu! So happy to see a gluten free pasta option. Second time to the Wooden Nickel. I do love the atmosphere of the restaurant and it's nice and quiet where you can have a nice conversation with your date or large party. The food was excellent! My wife and I went there for a double date and even our friends loved the place and food. I got the calamari as an appetizer and the truffle NY Strip steak for my entree. My wife ordered the Pasta Blanca and she loved it as well. 5 stars for the food! However, my rating is only a 4 because of the service. Our waitress was practically nonexistent, during our time there from sitting down, receiving the appetizers, eating our entrees and waiting for our check, she only filled our water glasses once. At the end she came back to our table three times asking about what needed to be split. We did inform her which meal and drink went with which couple but in the end the service wasn't great. We'll definitely go back for the food, it we hope the service will be better next time around. read more

Our family ornament exchange was held here for our second year. Although they are short staffed, our celebration was not diminished. Our server, Sandy, was exceptional and the food was delicious. Don't really recommend for takeout. I recently ordered the goat cheese app, club sandwich, and chicken salad sandwich for my friend and I, to-go, during lunch. We shared everything. Club sandwich was by far the best item. I ordered fries with it that I didn't get. The goat cheese app was horrible. The toast points were rock hard and stale. The goat cheese was disgusting, it tasted old, and it ended up getting thrown away. I waited in the bar area for 15 minutes for my order, after the time it was supposed to be ready. My food was sitting in the kitchen (could see it from the windows in the kitchen doors), and the bartender was no where to be found. The restaurant was empty in the middle of the day. I'm also pretty sure that there was an automatic gratuity added to the takeout order. I wanted to like this place because my best friend lives just down the road, and there aren't many other more upscale restaurants nearby, other than coast and main. I enjoyed lunch here several years but never cared to come back as it's hidden in Monroeville and to be honest, I tend to forget about it. My friend heard they remodeled and revamped their menu so we decided to bring the hubbies and have a nice dinner night out . The atmosphere is wonderful , very elegant and was well decorated . The menu has fantastic food selections and we were all very well pleased with our food decisions, despite very minor issues. The ahi appetizer presentation was very odd as it was served with creamy coleslaw. Didn't mix well with the sliced tuna (to be honest it was actually very off putting), but again not a big deal since the tuna was delicious anyhow. We also ordered the salmon Oscar which didn't have a ton of taste to it . The stuffed shrimp and filet were outstanding ! Our server was nice and attentive for the most part. She didn't seem to smile much or want to engage in any kind of conversation , but hey you never know when someone's having a bad day! Salad was fresh, onion soup was good, but the main meal was disappointing. Crab and shrimp angel pasta was extremely oily and too salty, just not edible. After reviewing the menu offerings that night for the entrees after the seminar all looked appetizing & anticipated eating a delectable dish featuring pasta primavera cooked in olive oil. Every dining room here is quaint & simple adorned with fancy decor each offering reasonable space accommodating parties of different sizes for any event meeting or occasion. There Hospitality is nothing impressive as wait staff was unattentitve to patrons for 20 minutes offering drink services before or during the presentation failing to also serve water which I requested before starting the video presentations. When I motioned to a server they ignored me along with a couple of other guests in attendance wanting drink service. Concerning my expectations of service set high & instead recieved standards equivalent to a Mcdonalds dining experience minus staff cell phone use. Giving the benefit of the doubt a server looked as she was having an off night while the other one had the enthusiasm of a Mcdonald's cashier who had no desire being there. Despite they were solely assigned to serve a small group of 40 people in attendance I saw no excuse for sub-par service as it was a slow weeknight with few patrons sitting at the bar & main dining areas. The overall dining experience wasn't complete without recieving dry pasta primavera lacking flavor & substance which was a shame failing to compliment its tender noodles. What caught my attention was plating & would rank it 7.5. My hopes are they will improve & offer a superb dish worthy of amazement. Wooden Nickel has potential for improvement returning to former glory it presented itself in the past. When improvements happen in food & service there will be a better chance I will recommend friends to book their wedding seminar or other event. I hosted a holiday party at the Wooden Nickel for 45 employees. The planning process was all done online, and was super easy. There was a minimum spend, which we were confident we would meet, and is not unusual for events of this type. On the day of the event, a huge snow storm hit. We started getting cancellations from our guests a few hours before the party. We knew that our contract didn't allow same-day cancellations (completely understandable), so we showed up and figured we'd take extra meals to a shelter if it came down to it. Well, we didn't have to do that. Without even asking, they told us that they would only make the meals for the guests that came, and only charged us for those that actually attended. The staff was wonderful, the room was beautifully decorated for the holidays, the food was great and everyone had a wonderful time. Oh, and they accommodated my guests with dietary restrictions (it's shocking how many restaurants don't do that). I would definitely recommend the Wooden Nickel for parties. read more

Waiting outside the front for others to arrive was extremely disgusting. It smelled worse than a dirty ashtray. There were cigarette butts everywhere on the ground including stuck into cracks in the outside walls. For Easter Brunch, the food was too much like dinner. There were ten of us and it took forever to get the food out. When my husband went to the men's room he was told we were taking too long, but we ordered as soon as asked and left immediately after paying. There is also a free dessert coupon upon Yelp checkin which they honored for our 2nd dessert. Service was excellent. Lived in the east side of Pittsburgh for 23 years, but never been to the Nickel as locals call it. My wife I went with a friend a few nights ago and I don't know why, but I thought it was going to be an outdated and past it's prime location. However, we were pleasantly surprised. While somewhat classic, it was also nicely decorated and a white table cloth style establishment. I had steak, wife had a chicken dish, and our friend has seafood pasta. We all enjoyed our food. It was pretty full that night so we were seated at a bar area table. The only downside of the evening was that I overheard the conversation between the bartender and another individual (who turned out to be our waitress) about whether or not so she was going to take our table. She seemed less than thrilled and you could tell based upon her attitude. However, that was the only downside. We had a nice experience overall and will go back! read more

This was our first visit. My husband took me to dinner for my birthday. From start to finish the meal was wonderful. We started with the goat cheese appetizer, which I think was my favorite of the evening. We also had the stuffed shrimp appetizer with vanilla butter. My husband had the special, Almond crusted salmon with vegetable risotto. I could see the look on his face after every bite, he was loving it. I had the veal cutlets with mushrooms and wine sauce over mashed potatoes. I think the potatoes could've used a little seasoning, they were a little bland for my liking but I did love the sauce over top of them. Im looking forward to a revisit to try something different. Came here on a Sunday night to celebrate my uncle's 70th birthday. There were 20 of us altogether including five children. We had 5 things to choose from on the menu. I ordered the strip steak with mashed potatoes. The steak was cooked perfectly (medium rare) and the mashed potatoes with chives were delicious. The steak was a little tough but still good. My sister had the angel hair pasta with shrimp and that was mediocre. Our waitress was very bossy but she got our orders right so I can't complain. The fried zucchini appetizer was pretty good but I got the salmon Oscar and neither the salmon or the crab tasted like much. The asparagus were cooked well though. Husband had the pasta Diablo and he said it was good but not great. The service was very slow and our server not incredibly pleasant. This review is not about the service. But about the management or let me say lack thereof. Kim, our bartender is phenomenal. A fantastic mixologist and a sweetheart of a person. On this particular day, I was waiting for my best friend & had hung my keys, which also had my wallet with it on yhe hook under the bar. When she arrived, we moved to the other side of the bar but I forgot to grab my keys period when we were ready to leave. I realized I didn't have them and went around to the other side of the bar, but they were gone. Panicked immediately alerted Kim and the hostess who let the GM, who is also the head chef aware of the situation. Whoever took them would have my key fob, my address from my license and all my cards. GM said they had cameras and he would review them at the end of the evening. I called the police and gave my statement. I also told him about the cameras and asked if we could review them now which is what happened. In the meantime Several of the regular patrons told me about an kitchen employee,who was presently working,that had been accused of stealing in 3 occasions. I don't know what the police saw on the tape But after reviewing, they took this employee to a small coat room and they came out with my keys. She told the GM that she heard someone lost keys but didn't know it was keys and a wallet. She "found" them but put them on a shelf because the g m's office was locked. I call BS. She never said a word even though everyone in the bar was talking about it and looking for my keys. She is still working there and management is well aware of the situation.
