I had an appointment with Stephanie through Salon Apprentice. Stephanie had responded right away about colour services and I was able to get in just a few days after I connected with her. Stephanie was attentive and wanted to make sure I was okay with her suggestions for my single process colour. She was also very thorough and took her time, even checking the wisps of hair in the back at my neckline, and made sure those strays were covered too. I felt very well looked after over the course of the three hours. Stephanie brought me something to drink, gave me sleeves for my glasses so they wouldn't get dye on them, and brought cushions while washing my hair so I would be more comfortable. My blow out and colour look great! I would definitely go back to the salon. read more

I had an appointment with Stephanie for Proaddiction, hair color, and blowout. She was professional and conscientious. I am very happy with the results (it's only been a day). The process was long, but hopefully worth it. The salon was clean, bright, and comfortable. They served tea and water, possibly other drinks as well, but no food nor snacks. This salon is on the 5th floor, accessible by elevator. The elevator serves 2 bldgs- make sure you get out on the right side. I've been getting Magic Sleek for years. It used to be a permanent straightener for me. I don't know if it's the new formula or technicians, but I've been very unhappy with the results. If you see my before photo - I had Magic Sleek in April. After consulting with Stephanie on the straightening techniques offered at this salon, we decided Proaddiction made the most sense for me. read more

Leona is incredible! I've been going to her for two years now and followed her when she made the move to Roman K. The very first time I went to her she completely fixed a bad haircut/color from another salon and I've never turned back. Olga has been doing my nails for a little over a year and my nails have never looked better! I usually do a gel manicure, a spa pedicure and have more recently have consistently been doing designs as well. She takes her time to make sure everything looks amazing but she's at the same time extremely efficient. She has lots of options and ideas for designs - I'm currently obsessed with the design we've been doing in different colors in the attached photo. I got keratin (lasio) with Lindsay a few weeks ago. While I was there she recommended this treatment for my blonde hair and told me my highlights were pretty. After I washed my hair for the first time it was immediately frizzy and curly. I noticed no difference from before the treatment and perhaps was more frizzy in the front from the mild breakage during the heating process. When I reached out to the team to see what could be done they said this happened because I had "over processed hair". I begged them to try to fix this because refund was off the table and I paid 400 dollars for this "keratin treatment" that did absolutely nothing to my hair. They agreed but warned it could further damaged my hair so decided not to return after consulting with my hair colorists at a different salon. Do NOT get keratin here. read more

You can get a basic, mediocre pedicure on every other block in New York City, but I searched all over for a proper European-type pedicure, the kind that enhances the health and beauty of your feet and nails. I finally found it at Roman K Salon. Olga is amazing; she has transformed the health of the skin on my feet. Her work is completely sanitary and meticulous; she is extremely knowledgeable and will advise you how to enhance the health of your fingernails and toenails. All my life, I've had weak fingernails, prone to split and bend. I've tried a host of nail hardeners to no avail. Scott's my go to for haircuts! I've been going to him for years. I followed him from his last location because no other stylist could compare. His cuts are always the best- so much body and movement...think Victoria's Secret model. He really pays attention to the texture of your hair to give you a cut that it is low maintenance. His blowouts are also amazing and I always get compliments whenever he does my hair. If you're looking for a new stylist, don't hesitate to visit him-he's such a kind and sweet person and really cares about his clients- I can't wait for my next appointment! I had the worst experience with one of the colourist at Roman K Salon located on Madison Avenue. I specifically requested to only touch up my roots. I also asked not to touch the color of my extensions. Somehow this colourist decided that my extensions needed to be coloured as well. She ruined my extensions, put some horrible grey/ash color and behaved extremely unprofessional. When I confronted the hairdresser, she dismissed my complaint, threw a tantrum. The reason she decided to change the color of my extensions because she did not like platinum blonde color and in her mind "I looked too cheap". Moreover, instead of correcting the colour or removing the toner, she rudely said that I should wash my hair with soda and shampoo. She also mentioned that she had no time to correct me or take me to make any corrections. Please note that prior to my appointment, I had a beautiful platinum blonde color. After my appointment, I looked like a racoon with four colours of different shades and brassy hair. Although I was refunded the money, nobody will refund me my time that I spent there. Now, I have to go to a different salon and pay more money to undo all the mess that was created by this unprofessional hairstylist. read more

Negative stars! This place is a joke. A year later and I still haven't received a refund! Appalling. Dear Roman K Manager, Who cares if your salon uses the best products when the execution of your services is this unacceptable? You're in a client service industry where quality of work, reputation, professionalism, referrals, reviews, and word of mouth matter... A LOT. Manhattan has hundreds of salons using the best products, but they also have proficient management, comprehensive stylist training, unparalleled service, and desirable results. Your personal insults have been noted and only reflect your immaturity and desperation. The actions you took (and didn't take) after I contacted you about the issue emphasized your salon's lack of customer care and safety protocol. The words you spoke only revealed your guilt. Who in their right mind would get a chemical treatment if they were having medical hair and scalp issues of that magnitude?! Harsh treatments would exacerbate a medical issue and straighter, smoother hair would only draw attention to a bald spot. Let's imagine that I came to your salon with a bald spot, as you claimed. What kind of beauty professional wouldn't pull the client aside to ask if there was a medical condition they should know about before embarking on a multi-hour chemical treatment that also uses very high heat? Not doing so would be incredibly irresponsible! What about the assistant shampooing my hair? He was quite chatty. Surely he would have noticed and asked about the bald spot had it existed. So even if I had come into the salon with a bald spot, which I didn't, multiple staff members would have failed at their job before any service had even been rendered. If you're using best in class products, either your staff is negligent or incompetent. Which is it? You also left out the part where you only offered me a refund if I signed a waiver releasing you of all future financial liability the same week I had the keratin treatment done. That sounds pretty guilty to me! And how could I possibly agree to that without knowing if the damage sustained was permanent, if it would get worse with time, and how much it would cost to treat? When I learned my hair would grow back with regular dermatological treatments and requested to speak to you later that month about a refund, you refused to take my calls. Shame on you! A year and several rounds of painful and expensive steroid injections to my scalp later, the hair in that "Roman K Salon keratin treatment induced bald spot" has grown a few inches and can almost fit into a ponytail again. I have a ring of fuzz around my head from all of the other hair that had thinned and fallen out around my crown during that same time period growing back too. Maybe this was a life lesson to appreciate my natural hair texture. I'd rather have frizzy hair than no hair. I'm grateful that it grew back and my heart goes out to those who actually do have medical conditions that result in the degree of hair loss I experienced by electing to undergo your $500 Lasio keratin service for vanity's sake. I hope the intelligent women of Yelp NYC learn from my trauma and continue to take their business elsewhere. I know my experience has cost (and continues to cost) Roman K Salon business that far surpasses the requested refund amount, which by all accounts was the very least you could have done to attempt to rectify the situation. I'm not going to hold my breath waiting for my refund or even an apology or follow-up from you. However, if you realize it's the right thing to do and that your business would benefit from a revised review that reflects management taking responsibility and proper action, you know how to reach me. read more

Answer to misinformation, incorrect response from owner: Stephanie has been charging me $65. She made an appointment with me and a receptionist on 5/31. It was confirmed by phone call and email on 8/7 and 8/8. Neither Stephanie nor your company had the decency and courtesy to tell me in advance that she was not honoring a prior appointment, did not try to change it or contact me in any way before I made the trip in person only to find out I was being completely ignored. She and others on your staff knew before today what her schedule was. Extremely unprofessional and rude, awful way to run a business that no-one bothered to even try to contact me to let me know about your schedule change. Also unprofessional in trying to build client loyalty with a stylist--you do the opposite. I had been planning to continue going to your salon and staying with Stephanie, but you obviously don't care about that either. Really bad customer service and disrespect for any client. read more

I've seen Lissa a few times now for hair appointments- she does the best job and is a total sweetheart to boot! The first time Lissa did my hair I was a highlighting newbie and nervous about permanently altering my hair so she just did some super subtle baby highlights/ balyage / hand painting and a haircut- it was so gorgeous that literally 10 months after I got the highlights done my friends were still raving about them! I couldn't believe they still looked so good after that long. I guess with the hand painted highlights your hair can grow out a bunch and they still look fresh! The next time Lissa highlighted my hair I was ready to go a bit more dramatic (she gave me a few cuts in between that were also fantastic with an amazing blow out). This time I still got her hand painting/ balyage highlights, but with a lot more and went even blonder in certain areas. I have naturally dark brown hair so I was thinking this could be difficult to look natural but she did such an amazing job!! Disappointed by amateur experience. Hair washer soaked me (soaked) & used very hot water. Hairstylist ignored my THREE requests not NOT cut my hair short & told me she liked the new length!!!! Colorist forgot me despite alarm and then left me in hands of an apprentice. This place came HIGHLY recommended by one of my friends who always has great tips....sadly not this time. I got soaked by the person washing my hair (so wet that my bra and underwear were dripping) and ignored by the colorist. Almost didn't review because didn't want my friend to be upset...but this was poor experience At start I told both colorist and stylist that due to rapid weight loss I had lost some hair at the back which was growing back BUT I don't look good in short hair and waiting to grow it out BEFORE matching it up length wise. Both of them suggested extra treatments. I explained I like my natural curls and don't want to straighten my hair and I don't want extensions. Happy to wait for my hair to grow out & See this as a process of regular haircuts and conditioning treatments. Started ok, then colorist left me in the hands of one of her apprentices / trainees without introducing us & neither of them spoke directly to me from that point onwards. She told her to wash out the dye, then do a gloss then do a treatment. I did hear a loud "ooops" at one stage and a "don't worry you can rinse & shampoo it again". I did let the trainee know the water was burning me because it was too hot...she apologized and said the tap was defective and temperatures fluctuated from icy to boiling. But a few minutes later... I got water streaming down my back and I was SOAKED! My bra, my woolen dress and my underwear were all sopping wet. She put new towels around my head and gave me a new frock...& a few minutes later warm water was once more pouring down my neck. She then moved me to the stylist who half-heartedly ran her hair drier over my shoulders and gave me a new frock but I had to sit there soaking wet for my haircut....so far I was sweet and didn't complain. My friend had recommended them afterall and mistakes happen. THE HAIRCUT: I had explained a number of times that the back of my hair was much shorter than the front because it was growing back...but that I didn't want to match the length yet because I look terrible in short hair due to my cork screw curls....& I wear it up a lot. I explained it three times that I wanted a trim ...dead ends etc as I didn't want short hair and I don't have time to straighten it. The stylist then proceeds to cut my hair to try match front to back..... When I interrupt her in a panic.....She starts to suggest hair extensions!!!!! & said "it matches better". Which was true but not what I asked. I had explained at the start that I had a new job starting Monday and didn't want anything dramatic just a tidy. She then told me that she liked the new length of my hair on me!!!! It's my hair. I am the one who is supposed to like it surely? Then almost in tears I tell her she may as well finish...& we have an awkward conversation where she says she "senses" I am upset!!! No, really? I wonder why! Then she blow dries my hair straight and says "look it's not that short!!" Maybe straight it was obviously a bit longer....still WAY shorter than I like but I DON'T STRAIGHTEN MY HAIR and I had told her frequently I wasn't planning to start (before, during and after haircut). She then suggested teaching me to blow dry it and / or flat iron it. They sell both lessons and GHDs and extensions! So basically she did what I asked her NOT to do and offered to me options to pay to fix it when she could have just LISTENED at start. (side note: at this stage she proceeds to tell me that she also has curly hair which she straightens...if I had realized how much she dislikes natural curls I would never have let her near my hair!!!)). In panic I agree to extensions and she says they have to be ordered in... so that's a no. At this stage the combination of being wet and being covered with cut hair started to make me itch....& I told her. She said she would finish faster - not what I wanted to hear when I already felt she was rushing so she could go home! THE EXIT: I tipped because my friend was a regular and I don't want her having a negative experience next time... When I left I asked receptionist for a towel as I was dripping water and when standing it started trickling down my legs. She shows me to a changing room and I try get out the bulk of the water from my dress. At this stage the colorist and stylist come over & suggest they "help" dry me with a hairdryer...so I can at least "be warm". Before I go outside... UNSURPRISINGLY- I don't recommend this place and won't be going back. read more

The salon is in a very convenient location on 5th avenue. Once you enter they offer assorted beverages (including champagne!) and they have a great magazine selection. The natural light through the floor to ceiling windows is a nice change of pace in NYC. Dayna is incredible! I have very thick//course hair, and she cuts and styles my hair in under an hour. She listens to my concerns, never chops too much, and my blowout lasts days. I will continue to go to her for years to come. read more

My first hair treatment experience with Roman was the Cezanne Relaxer-changed my life-it takes me 1/2 the time to blow dry and style my hair now and I didn't loose my natural care-just the frizz. I have got very think, course hair and Roman always cuts my hair beautifully paying close attention to my texture. I have been Roman's client for over 3 years now and every 6 weeks I return for my routine roots cover-up .
