Roman's may be small on space but it's big on flavor. ChatGPT said theirs is one of the top Ruben's in Toledo and I have to agree. Thin shaved beef piled high with good kraut and sauce. They offer three sizes (how high the meat is stacked) and we got the middle (Original) size which was plenty! Besides a great regular Ruben, the rocket Ruben comes with added pastrami which takes it over the top. Prices are not the cheapest but worth every penny. Had lunch there on Monday. I know this was the first business day for them after Thanksgiving, but... The pastrami was extremely dried out and tasteless. Really disappointing considering how good I know their pastrami can be. I also requested a side of coleslaw. So, I'm pretty sure they don't make their sides. The coleslaw had a really offensive taste to it. It wasn't spoiled, but it was just awful. I took 3 bites and threw it away. Aside from the flavor, the texture was fine. not soggy, not mushy, just horrible flavor. I'm giving them a 2 this time because the customer service was great. Unfortunately, they really need to watch their product a little closer and reconsider their source for their sides. read more

The menu is limited, but oddly, it doesn't feel limited; it feels refreshing instead of overwhelming. Downsides: limited hours (which do feel limited; 9 to 5, weekdays) and difficult parking. We were traveling on the turnpike and given the pathetic options for food found there, we ventured into Toledo to find something better. Found this deli on Yelp and I was excited. I LOOOOOVVE me some pastrami and corned beef. So I was hopeful when I saw the great reviews for this place. It's a cute enough little shop right across from what seems to be City Hall or something similar in downtown Toledo. We ordered a corned beef sandwich and a pastrami sandwich. For a dollar each, we got a small bag of chips and a can of pop each. Pretty good deal so far. The place was clean and the staff friendly, but at the end of the day, the food has to be good. Aaaaand it just wasn't. As we're eating our sandwiches, both Sean and I kept saying that something just tasted weird. The meat had a definitely weird flavor that was definitely NOT what you normally taste with corned beef and pastrami. After a few more bites and discussion, we decided what it tasted like - HOT DOGS. I kid you not, the exact flavor of the meat on my sandwich was that of a hot dog. Gross. The pickle was also not good. The bag of cheese curls was orange-flavored styrofoam. The only thing good about the meal was the Dr. Pepper. Sorry, Roman's. You just can't hold a candle to my beloved TJ and Mr. Brisket in the CLE. We'll stop elsewhere next time. read more

Working downtown this week and in need of a quick lunch to-go, I perused the Yelp reviews and decided to give Roman's Deli a try. Walking to the establishment, it really is just as tiny as others have indicated! As the only patron in the deli, both employees stared at me in awkward silence while I looked over the menu. Settling on the corned beef sandwich described in so many reviews, the staff sprung to action and quickly prepared my order. Ringing me up, the cashier, uttering his only words during my entire visit, said, "six dollars." Glancing back at the menu board which showed $5.99 for the corned beef, I rolled my eyes, figuring he was either rounding up, the posted price was out of date and had been increased by a penny, or he just really wanted a 1¢ tip. Regardless, I passed him a five and a one, then said "thank you" with a smile, but only received a blank stare back. If the cashier had asked if I would like to make it a combo, I would have gladly purchased the chips-and-soda upgrade, however I guess interacting with customers is not their thing. Back at my office, I hungrily opened my lunch and was impressed by the good size of the sandwich, and especially the very generous portion of corned beef bursting at its seams! Even better was the taste, with the delicious and expertly sliced corned beef practically melting in my mouth! Additionally the two pickle spears that came with the sandwich were the perfect blend of crunchy and tangy. While I loved the setting, large servings, and great tastes, it could not completely make up for the inconsistent price and sketchy customer service, which, in my view, holds the restaurant back from being a truly top-tier establishment. I ordered the Corned Beef, and since being exiled to the Land of No Decent Jewish Food, I wondered how good it really could be. I had been to the Bread Basket in Oak Park, not to mention the gone but never to be forgotten Lefkowskys Deli on Broadway in Downtown Detroit, so when it comes to Corned Beef, I know from what I''m talking about and I am super critical on how my sandwich should be made. 6 dollars buys a huge sandwich which for me is right down my alley. I am a big guy and I need food to live. This was it. The one thing that bothered me was the mustard choices. There is but one mustard at Romans and it has all the charm of downtown Toledo on a Monday night. I mean, bland and boring and as yellow as my cab was. Not good. But that is a minor, very minor detail. Don't even think of parking there. There is none. So I did the next best thing, I went inside and spoke to the owner. I arranged it so I could have my sandwich brought our to my cab instead of risking a parking ticket from the cash starved City of Toledo. I am from Cleveland, where we have great corned beef if you know where to go - like Slyman's. I was in Toledo and ran into this place. The Yelp reviews were decent, so I gave it a shot. Most of the menu was corned beef, so I ordered a Reuben. The owner grabbed a lump of cold corned beef and microwaved it. Bad sign. The sandwich was a terrible mess of fatty junk. It fell apart in my hands. I ate about a third and gave up between the poor quality of the meat and the mess. I ate the pickle and bag of chips and threw the rest in the garbage. I have indulged in many reubens in my life time but none come close to the awesomeness that is a reuben from Roman's deli. The freshly sliced corned beef melts in your mouth and the rest of the flavors came in waves of Swiss, rye and dressing. This may seem like an extreme review for such a simple deli setting but between the quality of the food and the wonderful conversation with the owner it was a truly great lunch experience. This is a great place to grab a sandwich. I try to make it there at least once a week. Their prices are very reasonable and you get a great sandwich in return.
