    Detroit Style Italian Supreme
    Michael R.

Detroit style pizza is really good exactly how it is supposed to be. Service was on point, we sat in the bar area and the ambiance was fun. So far this is the best pizza we have had in Toledo. Great place before or after an event. I recommend it and will be back.

We had a surprise birthday party here for 19 people. We had one waiter and he was incredible. He set up a special table for all our pizzas and large bowl of salad so we had our own "buffet". The pizzas are fantastic! We had 3 Detroit style pizzas (everyone's favorite) and 2 thin crust. The crusts are crisp on the outside and chewy inside. Sauce is especially good. I'd definitely recommend going here, but not on a night when there's a MudHen baseball game or Walleye hockey game because the parking is terrible downtown.

    The slap in my face..

I have been a huge fan of Pizza Papalis for years and would suggest this as spot to visit to anyone; however. This particular visit (during my lunch break @12 on 11/6/25) I order my favorite antipasto salad with a lunch special pizza. As I'm eating my salad (which I love) I noticed something gritty as I bite. In fact, I told my husband I felt as if I was eating sand or grounded glass. When I expressed this to my waitress she attempted to resolve the issue. Believing that it may have been an issue with the salad dressing (by the way they have the best salad dressing ever) She got me another salad. Due to the fact I had to get back to work, instead of me eating the salad I placed the salad into a to-go container. And, that's when I discovered I was eating actual dirt. The new salad revealed there was dirt in the salad. I called the waitress over, showed this to her. She was very apologetic. She reported this to her manager. Instead of the manager coming out to apologize, he/she sent her back out to me removing the salad/pizza combo from the bill and just added the lunch special pizza. The waitress was great and had absolutely nothing to do with the issue, I just want to make that clear. The manager and the person preparing the meal are the individuals I have a problem with. The current anxiety that I'm experiencing know knowing I just ate dirt (and lord knows what else) at one of my favorite restaurants and the manager wasn't man or woman enough to come out and apologized. Just the correction on my bill is an insult to a faithful customer. I'm currently praying I don't become ill from all of this. The thought of it all has me upset; however, the thought of eating dirt makes me feel worst and the thought of the manager hiding behind his/her waitress has me angry and feeling disrespected as a customer I will never go back to this location again

Appetizers are really good and so is the thin crust pie. Full service bar and decent service. Only downside is this place is a bit pricey.

Everything is home made, never frozen dough, fresh sauce and ingredients. I've found this spot and I love that you can taste the quality in every bite. The cheese tastes fresh and not too overwhelming, the pizza itself isn't floppy or greasy. It's everything you could want from a local spot. Great pizza, great daily deals and a vast menu of delicious items to choose from. The only thing that would escalate the experience is a dine in experience. Skip going to the overpriced, overproduced pizza chains. Stop at a real local pizzeria with great flavor and real ingredients at a better price.

The toppings are just... Somehow not right. I got sausage, onions, and peppers, and they were all very strange. The sausage is made in house, but the flavors aren't right for pizza sausage. The onions were too sweet, maybe? The green peppers were probably fine but somehow clashed with the onion and sausage. This may have been a cheese problem, because honestly whatever cheese they are using isn't very good. I feel bad leaving a negative review for a local small business, but with all the rave reviews I had high hopes, and this place was almost a total bust.

Went there Saturday with family and friends. What a great night!…read more Two of us had the lasagna and it was incredible. This isn't the usual lasagna. It's similar to what you know, but different! I bet it had 10 layers. The sauce was definitely made in-house. Not too sweet, not too bitter/sour. The one thing that's different with Calvino's is I couldn't detect or find any ricotta cheese, and I didn't miss it. It was a very generous portion, and it was perfectly cooked. No dry pasta or burned edges. I opted to add some Italian sausage which was the perfect addition. The other person who ordered this added sausage and ground beef and said that his was perfect. Either way, you can't go wrong! Another person at our table ordered the butternut squash ravioli. She was kind enough to let me try a piece and it was absolutely amazing! She ordered it with the olive oil and garlic sauce, which was the perfect pairing. This was as good or better than the butternut squash ravioli at Martini's in Columbus. The pasta had great texture (definitely fresh pasta) and the filling wasn't gluey in any way (this filling can have a tendency for textural issues). I'm definitely ordering it on my next visit! Someone ordered the chicken and pesto sandwich and raved about it. The last person at the table ordered the linguine with olive oil, garlic and mushrooms and again, it was perfection. All entrees were served with bread (ahhhh, those great little nuggets of fresh baked bread, drizzled in butter and sprinkled with cheese...) and a really nice, fresh salad. I would bet that the dressings are all homemade too! From past experience I can attest to the stromboli being outstanding (get the Godfather!)! The pizzas going by the table looked pretty amazing too, but I've not had their pizza. Appearances can be deceiving, but from the looks of the pies and quantity of people ordering them, they have to be pretty great too. Calvino's does not have a full bar, but they do have an extensive wine selection and some nice beers to choose from. If everyone at the table is ordering wine, go for the bottle as it will save you money. They have some really nice, inexpensive wines that pair very well with pasta - you won't break the bank on wine (but you could...)! All in all, it was a great night! The bill for the two of us came to $55.00 (that's including the tip)! The service was great, the food was outstanding - the best Italian meal I've had in Toledo, hands down.
