    Old school

I've had food from here quite a few times that my man has brought home but this was my first visit inside. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Very old school rustic look.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I'm not sure that I would eat here but that's because I love stuff being shiny and new. No delivery that I could find and a gravel parking lot on the side of the building. You can try to park along the street but the traffic is pretty steady and people aren't very nice about giving you time to find street parking. Now the folks are really nice and everyone greets you as you come in the door. The subs are the winner of the show here. And 12 bucks for a footlong in today's world is a pretty good deal. Great meat to bread ratio and I'm not a big fan of vegetables so pretty much all I get is the meat and bread. They have their own sauce which is called awesome sauce. I'm not quite sure what it is but I can see it making the bread a little soggy without the veggies so I got it on the side. In this way I'm kind of old school and I just prefer mayonnaise so I went home and put some good old hellmans on the sandwich and I was good to go. The meats are all quality. I got the Italian with provolone. I wish they were open a little bit later but only open till 2:00 so got to come for lunch. Recommended if you're in the area

Delicious sandwiches with house-made aioli. Friendly service in a great location with an old town feel. There is plenty of seating for you and whomever else and then some. Stop by today.

The happy goat made me more than happy! I have lived in Toledo for 15 years and I can't believe this is the first time I've been into The Original Sub Shop & Deli. ! The food really is spectacular. It's not "just another sub shop". It really is something special. They pack a lot of flavor inside of their fresh house-made bread. All the ingredients are high quality with well thought out perfectly crafted flavors. I was pleasantly surprised by their beer selection. We tried a little of everything. Even the soup was great, and I'm not really a soup kind of gal. The staff were extremely friendly and did a great job of making suggestions. My next trip will definitely include the angry goat. I'm excited to make my way through their menu. Don't sleep on the cookies either, definitely worth the splurge.

The feta cheese on this salad is so good and they are very kind and helpful. They gave me a sample of the soup to try just to be nice I did not even ask. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The music is so nice along with the colors and art giving this place such a positive vibe.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Their prices are amazing as well.

Let me tell y'all about the best sub shop I've ever been to... About a year ago I tasted the best soup I've ever had. Ginger, mushroom, brothy deliciousness. So today I called them up because I was craving it, but I couldn't find it on the menu. I spoke with Maureen, the owner, and told her about how the soup truly had resuscitated me last year when I had a double sinus infection. She asked for my name and phone number and promised me she would make it for me next week and call me so she could set aside a giant bowl for me! Then, she told me to come into the sub shop that day and she would whip me up a huge grilled cheese and some amazing soup to hold me over in the meantime. Let me tell you, this was the best grilled cheese I've ever had. The ambiance, customer service, and human decency the owner showed me made my entire month. I will be back again, and again, and again.

The Fainting Goat (aka classy fried bologna) is delicious! Pairs well with OG Sub's unrivaled pasta salad and a cold Boochy Mama drank.

The OG Sub Shop is easily one of my favorite eateries in Toledo. Not only is it the oldest sub shop in town (40 years strong) it's one of very few non-chain restaurants that specializes in the delight of oblong sandwiches. Owner Maureen Brogan is a wonderful person and her staff are always friendly and exciting. The vibe is wonderful, a cool old building filled with local art, literature and books to borrow, and really great smells. The food is wonderful, all high quality deli meats, fresh vegetables, and homemade soups daily, among other items. All subs are served on All Crumbs Bakery artisan bread (best bakery in town), which makes all the difference. The GOATS menu is the signature of the shop in its latest iteration. These are fun, inventive experiments that are all rousing successes! And there's the old school menu, the Originals, that honor the sammies that kept the place humming for 30+ years under the stewardship of the original owners. These are a few of my favorite things: Angry Goat - goat cheese, jam, pastrami and hot sauce? Yes please! Beef & Basil - just as it says, savory sliced roast beef balanced with fresh pesto The Original - this is really the perfect sandwich, stacked with salami, ham, and bologna and sliced provolone, piled with crispy iceberg lettuce, it reminds me of childhood. It's simple and taste the way a Midwest summer birthday party picnic feels. Pro tip: add roasted red pepper and banana peppers Italian / Deli Sub - slightly different take on these old standards and they are great Clumsy Goat - Hands down the best veggie sub you can get in town Tuna Salad Salad - This unique curried chicken salad is a Sub Shop staple. You gotta try a scoop! Fun Fact: you can make any sub on the menu a salad Macaroni Salad - arguably my favorite macaroni salad anywhere (don't tell my mom!), it's so filled with black pepper Chili / any soup - the chili recipe has been on the menu for many years and it delivers every time. Each day/week the the menu changes (roasted red pepper, cream of mushroom, There's also a full case of fun sodas, root beers and other treat and be sure to check out the fine selection of potato chips. Stop in, grab an order, and enjoy the vibe. It's a nice little space and it'll refresh your day. You'll definitely want to come back.

Like Wheat Beer, you need to upend the bottle before drinking D&B; it tastes like a mixture of ginger ale and root beer.

We went again on Saturday. WOW!…read more Started with a Martini for my dining partner and iced tea for me. Both were great. The waiter (Josh, a five-star waiter if ever there was one) really knows how to take care of his customers. He really knows the menu, can explain the dishes along with their components and what makes them unique and paces each course perfectly. He even asked if we were BOTH done before any dishes were removed from the table. Nothing looks worse than one person still eating while the rest of the table has no plates in front of them. We started with the roasted carrot salad. The carrots were perfectly roasted and chilled with and amazing tahini "paste" and radicchio, perfectly dressed with a lemon vinaigrette. OUTSTANDING!!! Seriously, this could have been my entire meal! The tahini paste is great, and I made it once while making a tahini dressing for roasted Brussels sprouts. Tahini naturally gets thick (paste like) when liquid is added. To make the paste, just stop adding liquid to it and stop mixing until it gets smooth again. Seriously, delicious. We both ordered the chicken schnitzel for our entrees. It comes with a really nice side salad consisting of mixed greens, dressed again with a very mild vinaigrette. My only quibble (and it's a really small one) is I would have liked the schnitzel to be a bit thinner. That said, it was perfectly cooked, not at all dry and the thickness is up to the creator of the dish. I don't think there's a "standard" for this (ha, ha - get it!). Great breading and very tasty. The dessert... Again, had to go with the sticky toffee pudding! If this is on the menu, there's no way I'm not going to order it. GOD, it's just a perfect ending to a great meal, well, that along with a pot of French Press coffee. All in all, the meal came to $108.00 excluding the tip. Expensive, but WORTH EVERY PENNY! I spent that much a few weeks ago (maybe more) on a really awful meal/experience at a different place. You'll have to read my old reviews to figure that one out! Anyway, this place treats their employees like they actually appreciate them. They took them on a cruise! Of all the restaurants I used to work at, the best thing I ever received was a shift meal or maybe a cold beer because I was still at the place cooking apps at 1:00 in the morning and the manager wanted to go home but felt bad because I couldn't leave. Thanks for the glass of Miller Lite draft, Mr. Chi-Chi's manager guy! Everyone in the place, from the servers to the hostesses, to the bus folks and the floor manager had smiles and a sense of graciousness and appreciation to each and every customer. Try to find that at any other restaurant in Toledo. The food is top notch, made with very unique recipes and techniques you're not going to find anywhere else. The dining room and restrooms (at least the men's) are clean. I never had to ask for a refill on my iced tea or water. New silverware was brought before each course was served. The old plates were removed from the table after the staff asked if it was OK to do so. Proper training in procedure and etiquette is obvious. Again, just a great meal in every way - 10 out of 10! Can't wait to go back.

We loved the Standard after visit #1. Then, somehow, a year and a half passed before we returned…read more The reason was location, and the reason was atmosphere, but mostly it was atmosphere. After visit #2, I'm not sure there will be a visit #3 anytime soon. The consensus among friends -- confirmed now by our own table -- is that everything is too heavy. The first few bites bring the oohs and the ahhs. By halfway through the plate, the ughs and the oofs begin. The menu reads as thoughtful and dialed in. Our table of four ordered very different entrees -- seafood, steak, pasta, salad -- and somehow every plate arrived at the same destination: rich, savory, dense. No acid. No brightness. And strangely, blue cheese and garlic had crept into every single bite, as if the kitchen could not bear to let a dish leave without them. A meal that should have pleased everyone left most of us with a mild remorse. I felt surprisingly ill for hours afterward -- not because anything was unsafe, not because it wasn't delicious, but because it was simply too much. Too rich. Too savory. The body, it turns out, asks for contrast, and we had not been given any. The service, on the other hand, is STILL outrageously good. Without question some of the best in the region -- better than nearly every higher-end room in town. But the atmosphere is stuffy, the food is one-note, and high quality is not the same thing as good execution. My wife's "medium plus" steak arrived extremely rare. My salmon was undercooked. At this price, that is inexcusable. Still -- the service. The service is something to behold.

There were two people who came before us, and then a group of 14, and then my husband and me, followed by another bunch of people into a restaurant that was already packed. The waitresses did not even bat an eyelid. They were very polite and were busy doing their work. They were helping seat people as well as checking out people who had just eaten. We only waited about 15 - 20 mins. In the meantime, we chatted with the locals, who told us how often they came here just to eat the pies. When we got seated, the first thing we ordered and got started on were the AMAZING pies (chocolate PB for me and custard for my husband). Oh my God, they were out of the world yummy! We got to watch the ladies on the grill as they made the food. My husband ordered he Swiss steak and I had the double hamburger with all the fixings. The food is great but so are the people who work here --they are just so friendly, have worked here for years and truly care. You don't see this anymore. If I lived here, I would come here once a week to chitchat with them and eat PIE!! Make sure you come here. This place is a gem and has been here since 1948.
