I've had food from here quite a few times that my man has brought home but this was my first visit inside. Very old school rustic look. I'm not sure that I would eat here but that's because I love stuff being shiny and new. No delivery that I could find and a gravel parking lot on the side of the building. You can try to park along the street but the traffic is pretty steady and people aren't very nice about giving you time to find street parking. Now the folks are really nice and everyone greets you as you come in the door. The subs are the winner of the show here. And 12 bucks for a footlong in today's world is a pretty good deal. Great meat to bread ratio and I'm not a big fan of vegetables so pretty much all I get is the meat and bread. They have their own sauce which is called awesome sauce. I'm not quite sure what it is but I can see it making the bread a little soggy without the veggies so I got it on the side. In this way I'm kind of old school and I just prefer mayonnaise so I went home and put some good old hellmans on the sandwich and I was good to go. The meats are all quality. Let me tell y'all about the best sub shop I've ever been to... About a year ago I tasted the best soup I've ever had. Ginger, mushroom, brothy deliciousness. So today I called them up because I was craving it, but I couldn't find it on the menu. I spoke with Maureen, the owner, and told her about how the soup truly had resuscitated me last year when I had a double sinus infection. She asked for my name and phone number and promised me she would make it for me next week and call me so she could set aside a giant bowl for me! Then, she told me to come into the sub shop that day and she would whip me up a huge grilled cheese and some amazing soup to hold me over in the meantime. The OG Sub Shop is easily one of my favorite eateries in Toledo. Not only is it the oldest sub shop in town (40 years strong) it's one of very few non-chain restaurants that specializes in the delight of oblong sandwiches. Owner Maureen Brogan is a wonderful person and her staff are always friendly and exciting. The vibe is wonderful, a cool old building filled with local art, literature and books to borrow, and really great smells. The food is wonderful, all high quality deli meats, fresh vegetables, and homemade soups daily, among other items. All subs are served on All Crumbs Bakery artisan bread (best bakery in town), which makes all the difference. The GOATS menu is the signature of the shop in its latest iteration. These are fun, inventive experiments that are all rousing successes! And there's the old school menu, the Originals, that honor the sammies that kept the place humming for 30+ years under the stewardship of the original owners. I had heard about this place for some time but never had the opportunity to stop by and try the food. So recently a friend was headed there for lunch and offered to pick us up something. I decided on the Angry Goat as the description had sounded pretty good. That Angry Goat stood no chance against a hungry stomach as it was devoured in no time at all. From the first bite on, I loved what I was tasting! The combination of ingredients seemed odd to me at first. But all the flavors came together beautifully! I ended up ordering more food the following day. While I ended up getting the same sandwich as before, I also ordered a Reuben. Another awesome sandwich! The Original foot long is still a very good product, and seems, for the most part, unchanged. If the bun has changed, it's very similar to the previous bun; that is to say, it's very good. I noticed many cool items on the menu (and on the Facebook page) that I don't remember seeing during the "David Era." I can't wait to try some of the soups. The service is still about the same; the new owner and new staff seem competent and friendly. But I must say this: I couldn't help but notice the 60 percent markup on The Original (was 5 bucks, now 8 bucks). Now, I'm not feeling particularly cheated, but a 60% price increase is strikingly noticeable. (Overall, however, the new prices are pretty much in line with other sub shops in the area. And, BTW, I understand that the prices were flat for a long time, I understand the concept of inflation, etc, etc). Although The Original Sub Shop & Deli isn't the awesome deal that it was, in the end, I've been coming here for about 25 years, and I have no plans to stop. 4 stars! read more

Today for example it was grilled bologna, swiss, grilled onions and honey mustard with crushed potato chips. Yes, that's right, grilled bologna with potato chips. If you're dining with a friend I suggest sharing a panini (no matter the variety), an order of the insanely perfectly fresh hummus and a greek salad. Glorious. The OG Sub Shop is serving up downtown Toledo's best lunch by some great Toledoans. If you're a downtown regular you'll probably bump into some friends while you're there. Good sandwiches and great service make up for a weird location. There's nothing around the Original Sub Shop. It's some kind of industrial wasteland. I don't know how they ended up here. The inside is nicely old school and they've done a lot to dress it up. But you do have to drive out of your way to come here. It's worth it if you want interesting sandwiches. I had the Beef and Basil. Roast beef with a pesto sauce, provolone, and roasted red peppers. It is a deep and interesting sandwich. That's the catch to this place: They're trying to create sandwiches that make you take notice. This is not homogenized sandwiches that please everyone. They make sandwiches that some people hate. The best advice is if it sounds like you'd hate it, you will. Be adventurous, though. Take a risk! My wife was pregnant. When the person behind the counter heard that, she insisted on grilling the meat until it reached a temperature safe for pregnant women. Without me asking. That is terrific service. I really wanted to like this place based on the yelp reviews but it was really disappointing. My husband and I both got the Angry Goat. The meat to bread/topping ratio was way off. There was one thin layer of pastrami on the sandwich. At some point I couldn't even tell if there was pastrami on there with all the lettuce and sauce (mostly goat cheese spread and jam). I think they forgot to put the habanero sauce because I didn't taste any spice to it which was needed to cut the sweetness of the jam. I didn't think the sandwich was bad. The flavors were good but the lack of meat really put me off. The sandwich was $8 which is cheap for Washington DC standards but out in Ohio $8 seems to be appropriate but you would at least expect a hearty sandwich. read more

Great little mom and pop sub shop near downtown. The building Original Sub is located in is a classic! It looks like a remnant of 19th century Toledo. As someone else said, the bread here is made fresh, or it's brought in from some place local. Portions could be a little bigger, but for the price - around five bucks - you really can't beat it. When I visited, I went ahead and had the Italian. It was delicious! I could have probably eaten two of them!
