We have been going to Romeo for the last 7 or 8 years every time we are in Playa. It is our favorite Italian food (in the world!). The service is top notch and we have tried a lot of the menu and everything has been delicious! We love their pizza, all of their pasta dishes, and their seafood :) The limoncello is the perfect ending to a wonderful dinner. I would recommend reservations since it is a smaller restaurant. I won't bore you with a bunch of accolades and hyperbole regarding our dinner last night a Romeo's. I think that's been already been established here in numerous posts. Yes, my tagliatelle with Italian sausage, mushrooms tossed with truffle oil and my wife's arrabiata tagliatelle were both sensational, not to mention the delicious Contadina salad, but I did notice something I've never seen before. Like most of you, I've dined at hundreds of Italian restaurants in the US and aboard over the years, but I never seen a menu that classified their pasta dishes as "dry pasta" or "homemade pasta". How cool is that? And why someone would actually select the dry pasta dish over homemade puzzles me, but it speaks to the authenticity and pride of this restaurant and its chef. While on the beach one day, a retired couple told us about this place. It looks like a hole in the wall, but the food was incredible. My wife is gluten free and they have gluten free noodles available in several sauces. She got a dish with noodles, lobster, shrimp and oysters. She loved every bite. My dish was excellent as well. When we got the bill, I thought they had made a mistake. It was so low, I was shocked. I looked closely and it was correct. The staff was so attentive and the food and service was second to none. While staying at The Fives Downtown, they recommended Romeo's for dinner, which was only a block away. It was busy - we were lucky to get a table. My kids loved the pizza, and my daughter LOVED the breads and infused oils. We were craving some good thin crust pizza so my wife and I decided to give this place a try. Overall we were very pleased with our dining experience here. Yes, the service was a little slow but the food more than made up for it. The food prices were very reasonable and we enjoyed the bottle of wine we ordered. We felt the highlight of our evening was in the pizza we ordered. The crust on the pizza was very thin and crispy all around, just how we like it. All the toppings on the pizza were very fresh and tasty as well. We had the Salmon Carpaccio for our appetizer and the chocolate volcano dessert and we enjoyed them both thoroughly. This quaint little Italian restaurant was the perfect spot in Playa to grab something outside of the local cuisine with my husband during our stay. On top of the great location right off the main drag, it had fantastic staff and stayed busy our entire meal. We started with the beef carpaccio--so delicious and full of flavor. The nuts give it a great texture and it pairs well with the garlic. I then had a Caprese salad---super fresh tomatoes and very refreshing but would recommend sharing, as it was a huge portion and probably not intended as an appetizer/pre meal salad as I'd ordered it. My husband had the pesto lasagna, which he claims was the best Italian dish he has ever had! I had the tagliatelle with mushrooms, sausage and truffle. It was very good but rich (very creamy) and large portions. Overall great experience but we will share dishes next time so we don't waste any food. We had a reservation for 4 people and were exactly on time. No one greeted us until we were reluctantly met by a waiter with a bad attitude who walked away from us after we said we had a reservation and gave our name/time. He turned his back on us and never came back. The entire time we were staring at the empty table that had a sign saying "reserved" with 4 seats. That was a sign we should have left. Predictably after making us wait and stare at our table for no reason the owner seated after we flagged him down. We ordered drinks which came quickly. Then we ordered a pizza which took about 10 minutes to arrive and was good. But that was the end of our food for the night at Romeo. An hour and 15 minutes later we were still waiting for our spaghetti! We saw lots of "to go" orders flying out the door and maybe even people who were seated after us eating their entrees. Our waiter even stopped by to say the food was coming in "3 minutes" but it never came. Only it did....30 minutes later. But we were so frustrated by the insane wait that we just wanted to leave. Bottom line, Romeo is too hot, way too crowded and not worth the ridiculous 1.5 hr wait for two plates of pasta. PS: kudos to them for a 20% discount on our bill, but they ruined our night. read more

We brought our three kids 23 (a certified foodie from San Luis Obispo, CA), our 17 year (que tiene hambre!) and our 7 year old (Mac n cheese please), plus my wife and I. We own a restaurant and cafe in Santa Barbara county and find ourselves in awe when a small place gets it right. It's much harder than it looks! This was our second night in a row at Romeo. We love the food in PDC but we needed a break from the delicious tacos and rice and beans we'd been having the last few days.Romeo (the owner's last name) was just the spot! First off the Romeo salad is a mix of arugula and prosciutto and parmigiana with roasted cherry tomatoes and crustini. The flavor pop was just right and we all tried to find ways to get each thing in every bite. Wiped the plate clean. We also ordered the buratta salad - a classic with fresh basil in the stem and beautiful tomatoes. We asked both nights if the bursts was housemade (they told us no, but we didn't believe them - gorgeous texture and flavor). I ordered the pulpo y pappas salad (octopus potatoes and arugula), so delicious that even the 7 year old ate octopus with a thumbs up (to be fair she's trying new things these days to broaden her palate to one day try out for master chef junior). First night we went with heavy cream sauce pastas - honestly they were a bit too heavy for the warm weather - but they were delicious - from the asparagus cream ravioli to the carbonara. My wife had arabiatta sauce that had such a nice umami flavor to it (how do they do that?!?). The 7 year old ate 4 cheese gnocchi. We topped it off with chocolate lava cake and a scoop of ice cream to share. Tonight we were old pros and the girls split the lasagna, I had bolognese sauce and the 7 year old had her eyes set on a margharita pizza (she ate the whole thing!). Tonight's dishes were out of this world. Portions are great. The food is delicious and the atmosphere is cozy and comfortable. A few other pluses: they brought the 7 year old's food out first. I think that is a small great thing any restaurant should do, especially one where the pasta is made fresh as you order it, making things take a little longer than Applebee's back at home. The waitstaff is friendly and fun. They are very attentive. The owner is right in the open kitchen cooking everything. We have four more nights here - I foresee one or two more trips. Dinner for 5 $80 usd. They take credit cards. If you are like us and need a little break from local fare, don't hesitate to give this place a try! read more

Who would have thought we'd find that in Mexico? We got the Octopus Salad, Gnocchi with Salmon, and the Tagliatelle Bolognese and all were on a whole other level of delicious. The homemade pastas were great. Service was excellent, and you could see the staff really hustling to make sure everyone was taken care of. I would make a reservation since they are really busy all the time, and I might recommend making it for 7pm or later if you aren't used to the hot weather as there is no AC. My girlfriend and I visited Romeo's on the last night of our vacation in Playa del Carmen. We were quite impressed! First, the atmosphere is very homely. It has an authentic feel to it. From the wooden tables and benches to the open air kitchen, it had classic Italian joint feel down perfectly. The menu had a great selection of Italian items. Everything you'd expect to find at an Italian restaurant. Was actually impressed with the number of seafood items on the menu. The food itself was awesome! I ordered the classic lasagna. Very good. Baked in the wood fire oven. My girlfriend got a classic pepperoni pizza. The pizzas are big enough to fill two people and were very good. The service was decent. Not too fast or slow. The pricing was good as well. Their exchange rate is 14 to 1, just as a heads up. We spent a total of $24 on the meal and tip. All-in-all, we were very pleased and would definitely return!
