Romero's Panaderia is one of those spots that doesn't look like much from the outside, and then quietly becomes one of your favorites. It's small. No getting around that. Limited selection compared to bigger bakeries. But here's the thing. What they do have is exactly what you want. No filler, no wasted space, just a tight lineup of pastries that are actually worth buying. We've gone in more than once thinking, "Alright, one pastry each, quick stop." That plan never survives contact with the display case. You start pointing things out, adding one more, then another, and suddenly you're walking out with a full box. My go-to is the Bavarian cream pastry. It's perfect. Not overly sweet, not heavy, just balanced and done right. It's the kind of thing you finish and immediately think about grabbing another. The pricing almost feels like a mistake in your favor. On our last visit, we bought enough pastries for ten people, with extras left over, and it came out to just under $20. Back near our place in Rhode Island, that same box would easily be double. Probably more. Here, it feels like you're getting away with something. And then there's the service. The woman we usually see there is genuinely kind. Not forced, not transactional. Just warm, welcoming, and happy to see people walk in the door. It adds to the whole experience in a way that's hard to fake. This place doesn't try to impress you. It just quietly delivers every time you show up. If you're anywhere near Cottonwood, stop in. You'll go in for one thing and leave with more, and you won't regret it. read more

The "rellonos" are exceptional, these are not chile rellenos... they are baked bread dough stuffed with various fillings. We stopped in and lucked out just before closing (1pm) and decided to try the pork and rice... and then wished we had bought several. Went back the next day and the rellenos were sold out. They were willing to put aside 4 of the rellenos for the next day - we were not disappointed! And I went back the last day early to surprise my husband with 4 more. If they ever give classes on how to make them - I'll sign up for lessons!!! The family who creates these gems are friendly and courteous and the prices are very reasonable! read more

Try the pumpkin empanadas! This is one of the most delectable of Mexican pastries, and they're done especially well here; they're sweet as candy and the casing is satisfyingly flaky. The large cookies with multicolored sprinkles are awesome as well; they have a nutty flavor, almond perhaps. I also tried some kind of coconut thumb print cookie with yummy strawberry jam in the middle. The bottom was rather burnt, but still... a worthwile treat, especially when considering the prices. We stopped on our way to Dead Horse Ranch before going riding. You know a spot is good when contractors, women in workout clothes, utility workers - white and Latinx - stop in to grab breakfast. We bought two breakfast tortas, two pastries and two coffees for under $10. The tortas and pastries were delicious. The coffee was fine and made me consider 4 stars, but after the $100 (albeit amazing breakfast) the day before, I thought better of it. Maybe grab your coffee elsewhere, but don't skip the baked goods at Romero's. read more

This little Mexican bakery in Cottonwood is a delight. They offer many colorful and tasty sweet breads and cookies which is a nice alternative to the regular bakery offerings. My only regret....missing out on their flour tortillas. read more

I drove past this place at night on my way to Clarkdale and had to stop by Monday morning when it was open again. The prices are awesome! The selection was pretty good, too. I tried a concha and a pineapple empanada, my partner had a cinnamon stick/twist and a chicken with green chile stuffed bun. Less than $4 total for everything! We both enjoyed our picks. I'd like to go back and sample other items, but live in Tucson. I'll definitely stop by again if I'm in the area in the future, though. read more

A co-worker brought me a chicken, rice, cream cheese and jalapeno filled breakfast empanada this morning, (I'm sure that is not what this delectable morsel is really called) and when I proceeded to ask what it was, was told to shut up and try it...so I did as told because, well it smelled amazing. I think this place is soo amazing! The lady is soo nice...frankly everyone there is nice. I'm a white girl who isn't completely familiar with the pastries that they had. The lady was so patient as i questioned her about each one. I picked out several and asked her to pick out her favorite which happened to be the cinnamon roll. It was all amazing! get there early in the morning and get the bread that is stuffed with a variety of meats/cheeses for only 99 cents. I've never spent more then 4 bucks there and got enough things to feed three people breakfast! Every time the prices shock me at how low they are. They also have amazing rolls that we use for pulled pork sandwiches. Go and explore that place! read more
