The many scents that hit my nose as soon I opened the door hit me hard, but in a good way! I, at first, thought I was in a soap store, Candlefish is at the north end of Ponce City Market close to the parking lot. It's a nice, open, bright space, with welcoming and friendly employees. After I realized that it was multiple various candle scents that I was smelling at the same time, a smiling employee came to me, and told me to let her know if I needed any help and if she could help me find anything. I told her that I was just looking. After picking up a variety of candles, such as mimosa, pina colada, Bloody Mary, and others, and smelling each of them, the candles started smelling similar. Not that they actually did smell similar, it's just that the scents throughout the store were just overwhelming me. This was my queue to leave. I will most likely be back to take a closer look at what Candlefish has. The store smelled really nice.

A class was about to start in 15 minutes and there were still a few spots left and I was able to join in. The class size was close to 20-25 people split between two large long tables where you had plenty of room to create. The entire run time for the class was probably about 2 hours. Very chill environment and you are provided the opportunity to create scents until you get the exact smell that you want for your candle. There were two people overseeing the class and they encourage mistakes and do overs. I did notice that people were able to BYOB. I thought that was neat as most people in the class seemed to be celebrating a birthday with a group. We were offered water during the class which I felt was considerate. The space doubles as a retail store and you're able to buy candles from known candle companies and some local companies as well. For the experience, I felt that value was fair. $50 to make and take your candle the same day. We were notified that it takes some time for your candle to set so you can't take it immediately which was fine because they will hold your candle for up to 6 wks for pickup which was gracious! I would go back in a heartbeat. Great experience!

We saw that…read morethe candle-making class was $45 per person and thought it would be a fun, local activity to try. We had an appointment for 12pm on a Saturday. Overall, the concept is great, the facility is beautiful, and the candles are decent, but the logistics and communication need a lot of improvement. The space itself is really cute. The bar area, candle-making setup, and rustic feel all create a nice atmosphere. The candle-making area was clean and comfortable, and I liked that we were able to choose our own scents. That said, the actual candle-making portion only took about 15 minutes, which felt short for the price. We also were not given the option to choose which jar we wanted to use, and there were no stickers in stock for labeling or decorating the candles, we ended up having to write on the brand sticker with sharpie which doesn't look polished. I haven't burned mine yet, but my friend said hers burned into a crater in the middle, so do with that what you will. The bigger issue was the overall logistics. The location was hard to find, and Google Maps directed us to the area near Honey Baked Ham. When we tried calling, the phone was "not accepting calls," so we had no way to get help finding the place. When we arrived, we were the only guests there. We noticed there was no bartender and asked about it, only to be told that "the cook was out of town," which meant there was no food or drinks available on a Saturday. Since the online menu and advertising gave the impression that food and drinks would be part of the experience, it would have been helpful to be notified beforehand. After making the candles, we were told to come back in two hours so they could set and cool. We went somewhere else to eat since food wasn't available, then received a call saying they would be closing early and that we needed to make sure we got back in time. After finishing our meal and heading back, we received another call asking if we could come back on Tuesday, three days later, to pick up the candles because "a blowdryer was broken." We politely declined and went back anyway. They said they would "try to find a blowdryer," but when we tried calling ourselves, the phone still was not accepting calls. When we got back, the candles still were not fully set. For a candle-making business, I would recommend investing in more reliable or industrial equipment for the setting/cooling process, especially if guests are told they can return the same day. I also think clearer communication would go a long way. Even a simple "sorry, we're not serving food or drinks today" before arrival would have helped manage expectations and allowed us to plan better. Another thing I noticed is that much of the advertising/content appears to be AI-generated and does not necessarily reflect the actual experience. The online presence suggests a fuller food, drink, and event experience than what was available during our visit. Using real photos, real flyers, and more accurate updates would better represent the business and avoid over-promising and underdelivering. It was an interesting experience, to say the least. I do think it's important to support small and local businesses, and the idea has a lot of potential. Unfortunately, it was clear that the kinks have not been fully worked out. They had their "grand opening" the following week despite hosting events before then, and allowing appointments/class scheduling without any disclaimer. I can't say I would recommend it right now, but I do think the concept is strong and could be great with improved communication, preparation, and consistency.
