Celebrated my birthday with a few of my friends and it was a great experience. The instruction, the learning experience and the outcome of the candles were perfect. I loved every minute of it!

THIS IS A REVIEW FOR THEIR CANDLE MAKING CLASS. Parking: there is ample parking, however it is not free and during peak hours/weekends it can be super tricky. I typically go up the street a bit and park on the street in the residential areas, mostly because I hate paying for parking and the walking doesn't bother me. You can easily find free parking with 2 blocks of PCM. If you are looking to book a class during one of their Fri/Sat/Sun slots, you better book it well in advance. I had to book our class about 3-4 weeks in advance, as they always fill up! Their weekday classes don't fill up nearly as quick. The class is about 1.5-2 hours long and was a great date night experience! They have about 12-15 slots in a class, so it's a larger group but still small enough to be pretty intimate and not overcrowded. You end up making 2 candles for $55. It's a pricey class, but I definitely think it's worth doing at least once. The instructors are fantastic and she did a great job explaining the entire process and making the whole thing very simple and easy to understand. You make 2 candles, both of which have to be the same scent. At the very beginning of class, they give you about 10-15 minutes to pick which scent you want from their library of 100; before class, they pull out about 15 scents as their top picks...but don't fret! If you don't like any of the bottles they pulled or know what number you want to make, they will pull the oil for any scent in their library (I strayed from the selected bottles and picked my own). There really aren't a ton of steps to making a candle, so it feels like the class goes by really fast. You pick your scent, prep your glass, mix wax and your scent oil, pour it in the jar and it's pretty much done. But they allow you to BYOB so it was nice to have something to sip on while waiting for the next step. Know that you have to wait 24 hours before going home with your candles, but don't worry if you can't be back the very next day...they hold them for up to 2 weeks (we did a weekend class and came back the following weekend to pick them up). I would highly recommend the class to anyone looking for a great girls day out or a date night. It's a really interactive experience, and it's always great to have a trinket to take home with you too!

Candlefish- This candle shop is every scentaholics dream. There are 100 scents available which makes this place all the more magical. I had a great time at Candlefish's candle making workshop! One of my girlfriends invited me out to this and I had blast. Candlefish is located in one of the outside shops at Ponce City Market. The interior is clean and bright. It's very well organized in there and the staff I met that night, Kwajalyn and Erin, were so great. Kwajalyn was so patient and helpful. You can tell she was passionate and invested in you when you were with here. She ensured that you found a scent you will really like. She also let my friend and I smell a ton of requested candles. So nice! Our candle making workshop was in a section off area of the shop. It was clean and organized the minute we walked in. You can even bring any beverages of your choice which means it makes for a fun candle + wine night out. I highly recommend this workshop for someone that's looking for a fun date night or a fun activity night out. You literally get to make your candles from start to end... The whole process made me feel like I was back in science lab when I was in school. Fun! The instructor, Erin, is hands on so any questions on measurement or anything, they will be right by your side. She made the class session fun. I also felt it was pretty well priced considering you get the hands on class plus you get to make two candles to take with you. Note- you do have to come back the next day to pick up your candles so it has time to dry. I also liked how you can have a saved "candle wish list" on file so for people like me that may forget which scents out the 100 options they liked can quickly find their favorites without having to smell all the scents again...unless you wanted to again just to channel you back to your happy place. I also loved how you can get discounts on any purchases made the day you attend the workshop. Very cool perk. I recommend the fun workshops and Candelfish for any candle lovers like myself out there. You and your nose will be pleasantly pleased.

Industrial farm house, candle making class in effect

I loved browsing this store while I was in the Ponce City Market. The industrial farm house vibe was pretty cool. There was a candle making class going on when we entered. They had some neat city print art that was on sale so I snagged the LA one! The girls working there were really nice. I also got a planner for $10! If you are in the area and are looking for a gift or something to add to your home come check them out.

Great service and lots of candles to take a sniff at. I smelled only a small portion of their wall of candles and ended up with a tropical scent for my friend's birthday. She's tropical like that. :) They even offer candle making classes here. Overall, a cute place and awesome for gifts.

Even worse experience with management in trying to rectify my experience through the GM, Heidi. It's starts from the top. I won't ever be back. Ever. All over stolen candles and a class that was $55. FYI - I truly dont understand how this happens, but this business should really treat paying customers better. I really wanted to like this place, but after everything I just can't. Completely unprofessional.

I found this candle shop online while searching for candle making classes. I was able to sign up online for the class. The candle making class was around $55. This shop is located in Ponce City Market and it is a store front so it was easy to locate. You do have to pay for parking and you may have to circle around a few times for an empty parking spot due to this being inside of a popular market. The inside of the store was very nice and the instructor was very patient and knowledge. The class was around 2hrs and you get to make two candles (same scent). I absolutely loved the class as I would like to start a candle business this gave pretty good information for a beginner like myself. They provide you with a few scents to choose from and if you don't care for any of those scents you do have the option to choose from the scent library. Also, while you're taking the class you are given a discount on the products in the store. Once you finish making your candle you have to leave it overnight and you can come back and pick it up the next day. I believe they will keep your candle up to 2 weeks. I sent a friend to pick up my candle because I don't live in the area. I was so disappointed to open the candle and notice it was not the candles I made. The candles I received belonged to someone else in the class. I did contact the store to make them aware but then everything shut down the same week due to Covid. Due to this error if you choose to go to this place check before you leave to make sure you have the correct items.

Candlefish is on the first floor of Ponce City Market. The store faces the large parking lot that sits on the corner of Hwy 29 & Glen Iris Drive NE. You must pay for parking. My best friend and I signed up online for the 'Candle Fragrance Blending 101 Workshop' which was $65.00 a person (which is BYOB). They also have a 'BYOB Scented Candle Making Workshop' for $55.00 and a 'BYOV Bring Your Own Vessel Workshop' for $50.00. Apparently, not enough people signed up for the class but Candlefish felt bad canceling on us so we were able to get a private lesson with the chandler Jasmine. Jasmine was super knowledgable about the different aspects of candles from the base (wax, soy, etc.) to the different effects of the three layers of notes (top, middle, and base) and even the wick. We were provided with two of each: small and large beakers, a tin to mix everything in, safety glasses, whisks, small and large popsicle sticks, vessels and wicks, ingredient labels and blank labels as well as glasses for our wine. We brought Criterion Sauvignon Blanc (in case you wanted to know. haha). There was also a clipboard for us to write down any notes we wanted to write. There were three "stations" set up around the main table we sat at which had the top, middle and base notes which were basically all the different scents/oils. I ended up picking just two scents for each of my candles. I went with cotton and moon lake musk for my first scent which I named 'Goodnight Moon' and golden rose and amber noir for my second which I named 'Amber Rose'. Usually, candles are to be ready for pick up the next day, but since it was the two of us, our candles were ready to be picked up in a few hours so we grabbed lunch afterward. If you love candles as much and my best friend and I do, you will certainly enjoy attending one of these workshops. I would totally do this again. By taking the workshop, you also get 10% (or 15... i don't remember) off anything they sell in the store, so that's a bonus!

Candlefish was the perfect afternoon activity for my sister's bachelorette party! Ani helped me book it and she was super helpful! We did the $55/person Saturday class which was perfect for the 8 of us. We each got to make 2 candles during the class. Our instructor Brian was awesome and kept the class fun the entire time!! He was also super helpful with helping us each pick our scent for our candles. They have so many scents to choose from, that we all felt like we found the perfect one! It was fun we were able to bring our own drinks too. I will definitely be back!

~All the smells~ Except, of course, my nose decided to be completely stuffed up the day I went and the congestion prevented me from fully taking it all in. Bum bum bum.. However! That did not stop me from having a great time. My boyfriend bought us tickets to the BYOB candle making class that they have and it turned out to be a perfect date activity. I would say it is something that could be enjoyed by all for any occasion, honestly. We put on our aprons, signed our waiver, introduced ourselves, and then the class began! They had cute trays setup for us with all the materials we'd need and then we were able to walk around the room and smell tons of various scents to choose which one we loved the most. If you weren't completely sold on the options they had laid out, you were allowed to go and choose from the hundred other options that can be seen in the shelves all the way up the wall. The only downfall is that your candle will not be finished and ready to take home until the next day. Otherwise, awesome experience!

As someone who spends way more on candles than one would like to admit, I was excited to hear about the candle making workshop they offer from a coworker, so I signed up on Candlefish's website. For $55, you get to make 2 of the same scented 9 oz candles that you can pick up the next day. Considering that one 9 oz candle costs $22, this cost is pretty reasonable. You get to choose from 100 different scents from their scent library. Fresh, citrus, fruity, warm, woodsy, they've got it all, and you can keep track of what you like on a little library card. You can also get 15% off your in store purchases if you take the workshop. Erin and Jasmine were great. They were very patient and helpful with narrowing down what scents you might like. The only minor setback I had was that I had my heart set on #93 (peach, apple, pear tones) for my candles, but they ran out of the oil for it. I had to rush to pick a different scent and missed a teensy bit of the workshop, but Erin and Jasmine caught me up to speed and were very apologetic. They even offered me a complimentary #93 candle tin which I really appreciated. The workshop is perfect for almost any occasion. Date night, girls' night out, you name it. The store itself is cute, chic, and beautifully decorated. Overall, it was very fun. I hope they open up a Candlefish in Austin because I would love to bring my girlfriends.

Such a cute little shop! Came here for a candle making class and was so thrilled with how much I learned from the class and left with two great smelling candles! They have a smell for everyone. They have a library of over 100 different candle scents. The candles are slow burning and smell heavenly.

I came here for a birthday/girls day out after researching the experience beforehand. We saw that…read morethe candle-making class was $45 per person and thought it would be a fun, local activity to try. We had an appointment for 12pm on a Saturday. Overall, the concept is great, the facility is beautiful, and the candles are decent, but the logistics and communication need a lot of improvement. The space itself is really cute. The bar area, candle-making setup, and rustic feel all create a nice atmosphere. The candle-making area was clean and comfortable, and I liked that we were able to choose our own scents. That said, the actual candle-making portion only took about 15 minutes, which felt short for the price. We also were not given the option to choose which jar we wanted to use, and there were no stickers in stock for labeling or decorating the candles, we ended up having to write on the brand sticker with sharpie which doesn't look polished. I haven't burned mine yet, but my friend said hers burned into a crater in the middle, so do with that what you will. The bigger issue was the overall logistics. The location was hard to find, and Google Maps directed us to the area near Honey Baked Ham. When we tried calling, the phone was "not accepting calls," so we had no way to get help finding the place. When we arrived, we were the only guests there. We noticed there was no bartender and asked about it, only to be told that "the cook was out of town," which meant there was no food or drinks available on a Saturday. Since the online menu and advertising gave the impression that food and drinks would be part of the experience, it would have been helpful to be notified beforehand. After making the candles, we were told to come back in two hours so they could set and cool. We went somewhere else to eat since food wasn't available, then received a call saying they would be closing early and that we needed to make sure we got back in time. After finishing our meal and heading back, we received another call asking if we could come back on Tuesday, three days later, to pick up the candles because "a blowdryer was broken." We politely declined and went back anyway. They said they would "try to find a blowdryer," but when we tried calling ourselves, the phone still was not accepting calls. When we got back, the candles still were not fully set. For a candle-making business, I would recommend investing in more reliable or industrial equipment for the setting/cooling process, especially if guests are told they can return the same day. I also think clearer communication would go a long way. Even a simple "sorry, we're not serving food or drinks today" before arrival would have helped manage expectations and allowed us to plan better. Another thing I noticed is that much of the advertising/content appears to be AI-generated and does not necessarily reflect the actual experience. The online presence suggests a fuller food, drink, and event experience than what was available during our visit. Using real photos, real flyers, and more accurate updates would better represent the business and avoid over-promising and underdelivering. It was an interesting experience, to say the least. I do think it's important to support small and local businesses, and the idea has a lot of potential. Unfortunately, it was clear that the kinks have not been fully worked out. They had their "grand opening" the following week despite hosting events before then, and allowing appointments/class scheduling without any disclaimer. I can't say I would recommend it right now, but I do think the concept is strong and could be great with improved communication, preparation, and consistency.
