Google maps led me to the wrong driveway and once I entered the business yard area I had to turn around. There were many junk cars and trucks parked around and it was not easy to turn back. After I finally was able to turn my rental car around I discovered I had been parked in by a truck blocking the only narrow lane between the many cars. I didn't see anyone and neither did my teenage daughter who was with me in the car. I tooted my horn - and I mean tooted, not honked - 3 short toots to see if I could attract someone to help me get out of the lot. I attracted someone all right! Several very hostile men who yelled at me. The worst of them told me I was just going to have to wait since I have come onto private properly uninvited. I told him it was an accident due to google maps and he flat out told me it was not an accident at all. I suddenly realized this guy apparently thought I wanted to steal some rusty old hub caps or something in this junky car yard. He apparently planned to enjoy being the all powerful man and was demanding I just sit there while he unloaded a bunch of tires (and I mean a big bunch of them that were heaped in his truck bed). He only needed to move the truck about 4 feet for me to leave, and the whole vibe was immediately ugly and negative. When I suddenly realized he was being racist, and possibly misogynist too, I told him he wouldn't talk to a white woman the same way he was to me. Then he got out of his truck and walked up to my car threateningly. By then I was so mad I said to go ahead and keep coming and he would see who the police would arrest if he attacked me, and it wouldn't be me. The guy was nuts! I let him make me a bit nuts for a short time - something I regret in a way, but I'm done with being walked over and put down. All the other men around (at least 4) were clearly backing this guy up too. I'd have regretted things getting worse as it could have ended up involving my daughter, who is in her late teens, but I also don't ever want her to just let people treat her like dirt. This guy was a nutter. The man I believe was the business owner finally told him to get back in his truck when it dawned on him the man was really likely to attack me! Up to that point this guy in charge was busy bad mouthing me for having honked my horn and clearly did not accept that we didn't see anybody, even though I told him that, and all of them had come out from some unknown places after I tooted to see what was happening. The tire guy came out from some room and the others were apparently somewhere inside the garage area out of sight. The whole thing was ugly and all of them clearly wanted me to shut up and remained trapped there until they felt good and ready to let me out of the driveway. I strongly recommend anyone with brown skin avoid this place, and frankly I sure hope everyone avoids doing business with them and supporting racists!

So I just got a phone call from a very highly regarded Bmw mechanic in West Hartford, who is known for as honesty. He told me my brakes were 75% fine a little wire on the rotors on the front and a little less in the back, but nothing I had to address right away. Whereas Portland automotive told me I needed a complete thermostat sensor yada yada when they check the codes, this Mechanic and West Hartford said he would do less and then see what happens (instead of trying to gauge me.) what convinced me to get another opinion was reading the reviews on Portland automotive, which seems sketchy, especially by men who probably it appears to me no more about cars versus the women to think they're very nice. Well, I'm a woman, but I go with my gut instinct, and in this case, it told me to go elsewhere.

I called them a couple times and talked to them and explained that that was a bit excessive. After I did some research we could have had it done at the dealership for $200 less with a year warranty. They told me that the labor charge they go by a book. So another words if it takes them an hour and the book says up to 3 hours that is what you paying. they did mark the part up a bit too and knew they would. I believe honesty will keep people coming back. They just lost me as a customer and they lost a new customer that could have been going back. I like to support small businesses but not if they charge more then the dealer for a repair. They were nice talking to me, but overcharge. Honesty can go a long way. Is sad because they are a Costco recommended repair shop but not for me at those prices.

What would have been a simple flat tire fix became complicated because I only have a tire inflation kit VS a "real" spare tire. Now what? The driver said his solution would be to tow us to Town Fair Tire to see if they could fix a side wall tire blow out and sadly Town Fair could not. As I understand it, no one can fix a side wall tire blow out. Town Fair was closing by then but the driver volunteered to stay late at his garage to replace our destroyed tire with a new tire we bought at Town Fair. And he did, balanced it , checked if the tire pressure display was working and we drove off costing less than I imagined! I was impressed how calm and unhurried this driver was so late in the day.

Reading other reviews online, you can easily see that Jack has a reputation of being a really honest, trustworthy mechanic, and based on my experience, it is well deserved. I've brought my car here twice, and have always been treated well. The prices have also been very reasonable. The only thing preventing me from giving them 4 or 5 stars is that it takes a long time for them to fix your car/diagnose problems. They do have bigger shop that they send cars out to for major repairs in Bloomfield, but they have such a small staff that it still takes a long time. They have a large volume of customers due to their good reputation, but you'll need to give them a day or two of advance notice before bringing it in to get looked at, and unless you can get someone to drive you around, you'll need to bring it back for another day or two for the actual repairs. It's not a bad location for waiting around if you have to because it's in Bishop's Corner. You can do grocery shopping, go out to eat, grab a coffee, or even go clothes shopping at Marshall's. :) The other thing preventing 4 or 5 stars is that sometimes they forget to call you to tell you the problem(s) they found, and also whether or not your car will be ready for you at the time you initially specified. I've come twice to get my car, and they had to call the Bloomfield shop to remind them to come drive it back to West Hartford so that I could have my car back. Overall, they do their best with a small workforce, and do good, honest work. To me that is worth the long waits!
