I don't like lounges because California lounge nightlife is full of bourgie/wannabourgie rowdy crowds, and also lounge music is terrible. I really liked this place though, but it might be because Portland city nightlife seems more relaxed than anything comparable in CA. Really spacious, great ambiance/music, and sitting by a roaring fireplace was nice. My only complaint is that it's hard to find at night since there isn't a blatant sign outside and is instead a funny looking man with a propeller backpack. We also came here on a weeknight, so that might explain why it was more chill/spacious. read more

Always great craft bartenders. It seems to have changed quite a bit but that is he way of things in this town now. Morgan and Jamie are wonderful and tentative servers. Drinks are reasonably priced for what you're getting. Beautiful and sexy atmosphere and always great music!!! F due is yummy and they always have sexy staff behind the bar. Only thing that could have been better was if they were more personable and conversational. We use Tontoms as an after work hangout. I love the atmosphere because it is designed in pods where you can have your own area. But this last Friday was the best yet. Our server Aaron- Rocked it !! There were 10 of us buying food and drinks for each other all on our own tabs, We were all in the Holiday mood, very loud and festive. He was just amazing. Not missing a beat!! Then one of us misplaced her phone and again Aaron got a flashlight to help us find it. One of the best servers I have had in a very long time. This was my second time at Rontoms. The first was indoors in the winter. Loved my drink and chicken skewers, and atmosphere. The second time was earlier this evening. We sat outside on the patio. It's a neat, private setting. Had the urban cowboy drink and chicken skewers again. The biggest disappointment was all the smokers. I thought it was illegal to smoke at restaurants, even when sitting outdoors.. If I go back again, I definitely won't sit outside!! read more

I ordered two long islands tonight. The first tasted okay. The second tasted disgusting. When I asked the bartender what that extra flavor was, he said it was a "standard long island." He then said that he put whiskey in his standard long islands. When I told him that there is no whiskey in a long island, he condescendingly insisted that I was wrong, even though I know this beverage like a best friend. I also found out that the first long island made by another bartender, though it didn't have whiskey, was missing the shot of tequila that is in the recipe for a long island. So it was a shot short of the drink I paid for. If they're going to charge $8.50 for the drink, they should learn how to make it. And never put whiskey in a long island unless you're trying to make someone puke. I couldn't even finish the drink (and that says something)! read more

Yikes. Rontoms is good if you go when there's not the usual crowd (so, early or on weekdays) -- standing three or four deep at the bar waiting for a drink for 45 minutes is no fun. If you are over 30, general aggravation with the clientele is highly likely. Otherwise, could be a rather nice time. read more

Some friends & I stopped by Rontom's the other night. Like the place, but the bar service has been less than stellar in the past. Well, that night Jared was our bartender & JACKPOT !! Where has he been the past 2 times ? He was friendly & tolerant of some of my patience-trying friends. Even hooked me up with a new drink that he whipped up when I couldn't decide what I wanted. I stopped going here due to bad service, but gave it another chance. The cocktail waitress was sweet and the atmosphere was ok, but the behavior of the staff at the end of the night was just juvenile and uncalled for! At about two fifteen the waitress was on the bar yelling, "GET THE FUUUCCCKKK OUT, PEOPLE," while she was all over some random dude whose friends were still at the bar. She continued to yell this until the gentleman bar tender took over and proceeded to do the same, but added in "GO THE FUCK HOME" and "WE DON'T WANT YOU HERE!" Being in the service industry, I understand wanting people to leave at closing time, but this behavior should be something to be ashamed of. Even the most 'hard-core' looking people there were taken back and said something like, "fuck if i go there again" So they, along with me...and probably others will NOT go back there again. There are so many places with GREAT service and this place is not one of them. I am pretty sure that this crude, juvenile, unnecessary behavior from the staff has caused others to lose any desire to ever come back. SO here's my gripe about Romtoms- the last time we went there the server was pretty rude. Let me set the scenario for you Yelpers: my parents, whom I love beyond words, were in Portland for vacation (they had previously lived here 5 years) and my dad was reuniting with old work friends and what not. We have a fairly large table out on the deck including my boyfriend and I, drinking beers having a good time. The patio is pretty active and starting to pick up since it's a nice early August afternoon. My mom and I decide to order some food and this is where I start getting frustrated with their service. In general, the servers there are ehhhhh, ok. Not super friendly but not completely dismissive and for god's sake would someone tell the bartender that his shit does, indeed, stink? I get it, dude. You're really hot and think that just because you're a hot bartender you can get by with barely the friendliest service. Not saying he's rude but more like he looks at your ID, not at you and asks you what you want, serves it and moves on. ANYWAYS, so before we order food the server (a female) is obviously busy with her tables and when we do decide to order food she replies with this, I shit you not- "The kitchen is really backed up so don't expect your food to come out right away." To my mom and me. Umm, do you want to run that by me one more time? I get what she's saying- they're busy but the way she said it really rubbed us the wrong way. Coming from a bevy of shitty food service jobs, I know the right and wrong way to let a customer know that the kitchen is behind. Plus, it's not like our table was being rude in anyway and we weren't constantly demanding beers. Oh, don't worry, at this point we're not expecting much which sucks because I generally do like this place. It's got an awesome back patio and good happy hour and close to work and my coworkers and I have been there before and had a really good time. This experience however, kind of soured my view of RT. Luckily, a busser/server wearing the teeniest tiniest dress was extremely nice and friendly. Romtoms IS cool, so much in fact that the hip looking servers and bartenders forget that the people ordering the beers work for a living, too. So if you're ordering food on a nice early August afternoon, don't expect your food to come out right away. read more
