Was back in Humboldt for a celebration of life and dropped in to purchase 3 cigars for the event. Accidently turned into parking lot at the crosswalk instead of the correct entry way, my bad. Went into the humidor selected 3 $15 sticks looked around for a good bourbon to pair with them, then stepped up to the register to pay. At that point I asked if they had a public restroom, to which the clerk replied " is that why you drove over the curb, because you had to pee?" Neverminded I'd been in the store for more than 5 minutes, I was making a near $50 purchase, have spent hundreds if not a thousand previous dollars( I know he had no way of knowing this) in their store, had a dress shirt and tie on, only to be treated like a typical Humboldt tweaker. So sad that people are so jaded by the lowlife culture that exits in Eureka. read more

Absolutely not. My the bff took me in here the other day it was both of our first time in this store. We definitely didn't have a great experience. There was 2 guys standing behind the counter. The taller one was glaring at us pretty much the whole time. They watched us as we walked around the store which was fine. But I was also very uncomfortable. While we were at the counter they started being extremely rude, vulgar and sexist, as well as homophobic towards us. Which was completely uncalled for. I do not recommend this place. ML&JC is definitely a diamond in the rough for cigar smokers, and wine and spirits drinkers! We have visited family in Eureka for eons and recently moved here, so we are somewhat familiar with the area. I never thought that I would find a humidor like the one at John's. I walked into the humidor and was pleased with the huge selection of brands. I rolled a number of cigars between my fingers and they were all "cigar" soft yet firm, as one would expect. None were hard. I bought an Arturo Fuente, i forget what type but it was about 42 ring and 6" long. I lit it up after a couple days it was a single match (no torch) cigar! Best cigar I've had in awhile! After walking through the humidor I strolled around the spirits shelves. They have quite an extensive selection of all spirits, some local, some that you see all the time on bar/restaurant menus, and some brands that you may have never seen before. I'm a vodka drinker and there were a handful of different of brands that I haven't seen before. And then there was the wine in the back. I didn't spend much time there, but long enough to know that they have a great selection of wines. I will be back! read more

I went to this store yesterday and I witnessed a horrible thing involving the 2 guys behind the counter and 2 customers. You could see how uncomfortable the 2 customers were. First off, I will say that they were very snobby towards the couple. For no reason. They were constantly staring at the couple who were doing nothing wrong. But they were staring at one of then inparticular. The one guy they assumed was the owner with the beard was looking, pointing and whispering to the tall guy with the ponytail. When they went to the register to check out. The guy with the beard refused to check out or even touch the items they were purchasing. The other guy did check them out because they were paying customers. But them making that couple so uncomfortable for no reason was uncalled for. It was heartbreaking to watch the one guy refuse to touch an item or even check out a customer because they are part of the LGBTQIA+ community. Stop discriminating against those that are part of the LGBTQIA community. Idgaf if they are gay, trans, bi, pan. Pink with purple Poca dots. They are still humans and they aren't hurting you. You are who you are so let them be who they are. If you don't like it then just keep your trap shut. Stop the hate. I did run into this couple at another store and talked with them the were very upset about what had happened. They mentioned they weren't aware that the business was homophobic or transphobic and that they would not be going back there. If you are a supporter of the LGBTQIA+ community i wouldn't recommend going here. Now this is my opinion based on what I witnessed with my own 2 eyes and ears. I get into John's once in awhile to buy a few overpriced cigars or something for my humidors, or just a cool lighter. It's overpriced but whatever. So yesterday I was in there with a friend and he was eyeballing the selection of lighters so I told him to pick one out and I'd buy it for him. I figured it was what, like $90 tops? Okay. But your *guy* treats him like he's some kind of a tweaker thief, moving to keep himself between my friend and the lighters, blocking him with the door, turning the cabinet away, not letting him see any of the actual lighters. Bro actually told him your lighters are "too good" for cigarettes. Completely unsure why this is how you think a business is run. And yeah maybe it would have only been a $60 sale, but who just turns up their nose at a sale which is already a done deal? Is John's just rolling in piles of so much cash they can let guaranteed sales walk out the door? Imagine thinking your *Eureka* business is Just That Fancy. read more

I've been a patron here for years. I was yelled at today more than once for being on the phone. Mind you, no one reads every sign before entering an establishment. I was on the phone with a family member. Made my selections and headed to the line to pay. No one said anything to me until I was in line. The employee with a full beard started yelling at me to leave the store. When he said I needed to take my call outside, I let the person know on the phone and proceeded to end the call abruptly... He continued to yell at me, then smile gleefully at the patron ahead of me, as if he is proud of making me extremely uncomfortable and unwelcome. It's one thing to inform someone of a rule. But if you see that person making an effort to immediately follow the rules you're imposing, you don't keep yelling at them. His coworker handled the transaction, then he decided to bag my items for me. Whilst still being rude and ignoring me thanking both his coworker and then him for bagging the items. Had I not been in a hurry and shopping for someone else, I would have left my purchases and not entertained the mistreatment. I don't think I will return. Unfortunate since I have liked the establishment previous to this visit. If you are going to impose a rule make it more visible. There is signage but it's small and next to another sign that also grabs customers attention. No one is going to stand outside for 5 min to read the signs before entering to buy some beer. read more

Been here forever it seems, a really good selection of cigars, tobaccos and alcohol in all of its various forms. Along with an odd assortment of sundries one would not normally expect to find in a liquor store. A neighborhood shop. The staff in all my dealings have always been friendly professional and knowledgeable, and willing to offer suggestions when needed, as well as pleasant conversation while checking out. The selection of cigars is extensive with a wide variety of price points, from novice to connoisseur, with an excellent range of smoke profiles . 5 stars based on what can be found in Eureka. This place has been here a long time; before I even retired from "The Land of The Living Dead". Place is located in a run down shopping mall and may look a little sketchy from the outside, but inside it is a true oasis of fine booze, cigars and chocolates. I was there looking for a few fine cigars and this store looks like it was the best available. The walk in humidor has a pretty good collection in a well kept, operating humidor. The guys behind the counter were welcoming when I walked in and asked to peruse the humidor stocks. Since I didn't look like one of mildew denizens roaming outside, they said sure and ask any questions you may have. Even found a Perdomo, one of my fav brands, in the medium priced range. Bought 4 others and when checking out, They threw in a nice cigar cutter as a gift. Also took off 10% to compensate for the BS tobacco tax, CA recently passed. So all in all, when in the area, I would recommend stopping here for cigars, loose tobacco for you pipe smokers, and booze. Prices were competitive too. read more

Friendly people work here. I haven't seen any loitering outside which is nice for a liquor store. The prices are average but that's okay because at least they are close by. It would be nice if they had local Humboldt milk and at a better price then other places- I like when our stores support local businesses and farmers. Excellent Stock, Knowledgeable Staff, Terrible Experience. I had a great interaction at first: a clerk was quick to help me, pointed me to the right area, and was so friendly that I even bought a bottle of an unfamiliar product based on his suggestion. We exchanged pleasant banter on checkout, and I felt great about the exchange until I walked away from the counter and heard a coworker criticizing the bottle the clerk recommended to me and hearing: "Yeah! you ever go in for the upsell and...." I just kept walking, but felt like I was a mark, especially getting home and finding out the booze was *terrible*. Clearly they were trying to use me to move a lackluster product. I understand the realities of sales, but discussing it while I was still in earshot was seriously unprofessional and made sure I would never step into that establishment again. read more

As whiskey lovers visiting from out of town we checked many bottle shops in the area and found this shop to have the best selection and prices. The rare allocated stuff was marked up a bit over msrp but not to the ridiculous amounts as every other shop we checked with any decent bottles. Staff was friendly and helpful offering recommendations and sampled us on a bottle. They also had a couple private barrel selections which I'm always excited to find and try. read more

Johns is right down the street from my business so I am a little bias. However holy smokes its so awesome. The shop is family owned. They must treat their staff well because the same people are always there so I feel like I am hanging out with friends when i stop in because I am not meeting new employees every time. You can tell John loves what he does. He upgrades his shop all the time with things like a tasting area and a great humidor and always getting in a great selection of spirits that his staff will help you select. If you were passing by the Myrtletown Shopping Center you might not guess that the modest storefront of Myrtlewood Liquor & John's Fine cigars housed a truly excellent liquor and cigar and tobacco store. Coming through the door, you are immediately surrounded by the welcoming smell of fine tobaccos that occasionally escapes from the door to the humidor on the left. Along the right wall, floor to ceiling bottles, bottles, bottles, staples and stalwarts mixed with gems and jewels, stretch most of the length of the store. There's a little tap room in the back! It wasn't open when I was there, but I liked the looks of it. A very cursory examination of the store inventory seemed to support my initial impression that they pretty much had it all. If you were throwing a party and needed to pick up some things to make a cocktail, this store will have you covered. At the counter, there was a basket of lemons and limes. A nice touch that I always appreciate. When I'm visiting a liquor store for the first time, I like to sort of randomly think of one cocktail and see if I can make it with what is found in the store. For my walk through this store, the cocktail I had in mind was a Singapore Sling. Everything was there, but I wasn't finding pineapple juice. The counterman asked me if I needed any help and I asked if he had pineapple juice. "Right over there" he said, pointing at a nearby cooler. My Sling was complete! read more

This is the best liquor store in Humboldt County hands DOWN. The staff are friendly with just enough surly to be fun, and most of them know their products pretty well (well, one guy knows wine better than others, another knows bourbon and tequila, etc). It's really the only "real" liquor store in the area. All the others are just bodegas/mini marts that happen to sell *some* liquor. They also have the largest and best selection of cigars in the county as far as I know. The prices are really pretty good, too. You'd think that with a BevMo, Costco, CVS, and other big-box stores in town that John's wouldn't be able to compete but they do. There are some things you'll be able to get cheaper at the big-box stores, but not as much as you'd think. It's not even the cheaper stuff either. For example, a bottle of Makers Mark is routinely cheaper at John's than it is at BevMo or CVS. At the same time, a bottle of Angel's Envy (not the cheap stuff) is only ~$45 at John's while it's over $80 at BevMo (depending on the time of year). The price comparisons between the "big guys" and John's can be all over the place, so if you really want the best deal you'll have to shop around. What I'm getting at however is don't *assume* that John's will be more expensive because more often than not their prices are either comparable or better. read more

My husband insists on stopping every time we are in Eureka (we live in Arcata). The guy with the ponytail (I think his name is Josh?) always has great advice, and my husband has enjoyed every cigar he has recommended. They have something for everyone. There is a Creme Brûlée one on the bottom shelf, right hand side of the humidor, that my husband gets when he's celebrating something. He loves the Java Modero ones, and when we have a little extra spending money, he gets the Gurkha Warlord. If a pipe is more your speed, their Latakia tobacco is fantastic. My husband keeps a bag of it in the car, and it smells divine. They helped me choose my first bottle of wine (a sweet Riesling) and told my husband how to dip the end of his cigar in a little bit of whiskey to enhance the flavor. These guys really are awesome. Edit: they lost a star cause the owner said Josh (one of the employees) couldn't bring his dog Max in anymore. This place has a good selection of high end spirits and cigars. Unbeatable esp. considering that you are in Eureka. I visit the City for work and always have to stop by and check out their selection. Admittedly, their prices have gone way up to reflect the whiskey boom but most of the non hyped items are still very reasonable. I would give them 5 stars simply for the fact that late one night when I stopped by, I chatted with a clerk and he offered me a small pour of Talisker 25, 2004 bottling which was Amazing. They often feel more like neighbors and friends, than cashiers. And they do know me--and call me--by name. They even know my dogs' names! They let me bring my dogs in, and they love on them, and they give them treats. They clearly love animals. Although there are cheaper places to buy some of the things they sell, my dogs would never forgive me if I went to those places instead. And I would miss the good people at John's. Not just the best place in Humboldt County to buy cigars, it's really in a league of its own for the area. A beautiful walk-in humidor with a wide variety of brands and prices. Not cheap, but good cigars aren't cheap to begin with. If you are looking for inexpensive, flavored cigars, they have them. If you are looking for a legal Cohiba, Avo, Fuente or Motecristo, they have them. If you are looking for a less mainstream brand like Acid, Perdomo or Gurkha, they have them. Everything is fresh, in good condition and can be bought per-cigar or by the box. The store's liquor selection is also the best in the area. They have a huge variety of single malt Scotch, small batch Bourbons, fine ports and every other liquor you can imagine. John, the owner, can pretty much answer any question you have on the subject of cigars, Scotch, Bourbon and Ports. The only downside is that there is only one of him and he isn't there 24x7. The beer and wine selection isn't THE best in Humboldt County, but they have a lot more variety than most places in the area and their prices are certainly reasonable. Besides cigars & liquors, they also stock some grocery items and smoking supplies as well. I've been shopping there since the place first opened. You would drive right by this place. From the outside it looks a bit trashy and, unfortunately, it's next door to an even trashier-looking comics store. When I moved over to this side of Eureka, I stopped in one day and whoa, SURPRISE! Inside, it feels like a high-end spirit shop. The people are mostly knowledgeable and friendly. Just left this establishment and am completely appalled. My partner called last night to hold a bottle of rather expensive bourbon. A bottle of 10 year Pappy. The man he spoke to last night told him repeatedly that he cannot hold that bottle and it is on a first come first serve basis. After being told he cannot buy it and even pleading with the man, my partner was still told no. However, he could hold it for an extra $100 cash. Although the purpose of this bottle is very significant to his family, my partner knew that ethically that wasn't right and after asking the man to see how many he had in stock, which was a few, he told the individual that I would be there in the morning to pick up the bottle. He was out of the state so I'd be there to get it. When I walked in this morning, I told them the bottle I needed and the man behind the counter, Clint, laughed at me and told me that I should have called 15 min earlier as he was literally boxing up their last bottle to have shipped to a person who had called and bought it over the phone. Not knowing what to do and even considering buying the 15 year pappy ($800) I called my partner. He asked to speak with Clint and Clint continued to laugh and smirk informing my partner that he was lying about the conversation he had the night before. He did not once apologized about any kind of possible "misunderstanding" nor was human on any level. Just a prick. He continued to laugh in my face as well. There are some extreme ethical issues at this sad excuse for an establishment. John, the owner, was the other man behind they counter and he barely made eye contact with me nor corrected his employees demeanor. They will lose my business, my family's business, and I will inform anyone and everyone I know about their shady ethics and poor customer service. The man who tried to capitalize on an extra $100 to hold a bottle of bourbon tried to scam a family the day after Christmas. Shame on you. John, in a world of diminishing local businesses you and your employees do not have the security of losing thousands of dollars due to a pathetic excuse for an employee. I said this bottle was very important to my partner and his family. It was to be for his father who is very rapidly losing his wife to brain cancer.
