I moved to the area just a few weeks before Toni's closed, and was very sad to see it go. Hadn't heard of Roost before they moved in, but holy moly, this place is fantastic. Breakfast: Went with Ali (Nashville hot chicken, pickles, egg). Amazing. The biscuit is already falling apart by the time you get it, but that's because there's so much deliciousness inside. Dinner: Nashville hot on a bun with ranch/coleslaw/pickles and more coleslaw/mac and cheese on the side. Pretty solid deal for $10 out the door. Coleslaw does the job and the mac and cheese is as decadent as you'd want it. They do cook to order, so call ahead if you're in a hurry. Probably the best fried chicken in Chicago. The food here is easily head and shoulders better than other chicken places with higher profile locations. It's moist, perfectly seasoned and accompanied by the most delicious biscuits this side of Red Lobster. Moreover, this place has been consistent in serving fantastic food for years now. (Skip the Nashville hot, too hot and has a weird flavor) The chips and mac&cheese are also very good. Really decently priced. The roost chicken biscuit is the best chicken biscuit I've ever had. The biscuit is enormous and buttery and falls apart with each bite. The chicken is moist on the inside and has a breaded crispy exterior. The Nashville hot is a delicious dry heat that melds well with the pickles and coleslaw that top the sandwich. The coleslaw is a little different than typical with a more watery base but is delicious nonetheless. The perfect ending to this southern style meal is a serving of peach cobbler. Omg. Sweet and peachy and warms you up from the inside out. I've visited both locations and equally content visiting either location, though this one has some outdoor seating. TL; DR best chicken biscuit you'll ever eat and the peach cobbler is a real win read more

This place is pretty tiny inside and there's a chance there might not be enough counter space for you to eat there. It takes at least 10 minutes for them to cook, so don't expect to get in and out really fast. Their fried chicken is pretty good. The meat is juicy and the skin is crunchy, however, the breading is a little on the oily side. The buttermilk milk biscuits are fluffy and buttery, but they crumble a little too easily. I thought the mac and cheese was a bit bland and the cucumber slaw was refreshing. And in case you were wondering, the nashville hot is spicier than the spicy chicken. It may not be my favorite fried chicken, but it's still a decent option for that area. read more

Finger lickin' good! This chicken spot has flavor, lightly breaded chicken, and a friendly staff to boot. We're visiting and of course turned to Yelp for guidance, so happy it didn't disappoint! If you are looking for a quick bite to eat, sometimes it takes about 20min for 1 order, but I would say definitely worth the wait. I have been meaning to try this place for a while since I had seen that the old pizza spot was gone and hadn't gotten a chance to check that place out. I finally got in and place my order with a very nice and friendly girl at the front, and she really helped me out with deciding on the peach cobbler. Let me tell you it was a good decision maybe not on the caloric intake part, but it was delish. I decided on the half the bird and I'm not sure how I ended up getting 2 wings instead of a drumstick so that was kind of bummer. I didn't get to choose on the substitution in that case which was disappointing. The prices were reasonable. The coleslaw was also very good. I'm a few hundred documented chicken sandwhiches in, and I can tell you, they've got a good spicy rub and decent biscuit. What I don't enjoy, is seeing capitalization of niceties or simple necessities. $7+ for a small chicken sandwhich is not a great deal, and the meal has more bang but still pushes the limits for a real hole in the wall, or Carolina kitchen. Worth a taste but overpriced by at least a few dollars, the staff is loud and generally nice to customers, but fought with one another and blasted some awful, vulgar music that the cooks kept 'cheya!'ing to. Glad to see they kept motivated but if they were more productive maybe they could get rid of one and knock some dollars off the tiny sandwhiches. Maybe I am a capitalist after all. read more

We came here on a last minute search for lunch, and it did not disappoint. The chicken is delicious, and we enjoyed the fries and mac and cheese as well. If you do not like spicy food, you should steer clear of this place. The original flavored chicken has a kick to it that is perfect for me (who can only handle a small quantity of spicy), but could easily be too much if spicy isn't your sort of thing. Absolutely amazing. Open kitchen and the staff is having a great time preparing your food made to order. I got the biscuit sandwich (nashville hot of course) and a side of mac and cheese and bread pudding. Chicken is perfectly crispy and soaked in hot sauce with some coleslaw on top which is a great combo, especially because the hot sauce and coleslaw dressing soak into the homemade biscuit. Ive had pretty much all the main places that do nashville hot chicken in Chicago and this one is the best. I loved the ambiance of the open kitchen and limited seating (maybe enough for 7-8 people). I love the food here. This is the real way to eat chicken! If you are in the area you for sure have to stop. It's fairly quick but super good. The service is usually good too. I stopped in tonight and the man taking orders was amazing. He was so friendly and personable. I could tell that he was trying to make everyone feel noticed. Fried chicken! That is what this place sells, so if you don't want fried chicken go elsewhere. The fried chicken was really tasty, the "spicy" sandwich had just a bit of a kick, but won't set your mouth on fire (there's a "Carolina Hot" for that, which I didn't try). They have a few sides, and you can add two sides or a side and a dessert to your sandwich for a few bucks more. The sandwich is made to order, so there is a bit of a wait. I'd suggest ordering ahead. For sides, I wanted mac & cheese but they didn't have any ready at the time, so I went with chips (they don't have French fries) which were salty and crispy, as chips should be. They also offer coleslaw, I think, or a biscuit (if you don't opt to get your sandwich on a biscuit, or you really like biscuits... or you get the fried chicken not in sandwich form). I went with a dessert, bread pudding, which was excellent. One little downer, toward the end the SO found a hair on his sandwich. They might want to try wearing hair nets in the kitchen. read more
