I've been wanting to try this place for several years. The dish that was really luring me in was the Carrot Cake. I've seen every season of Top Chef and this Carrot Cake won Chef Demarr Brown a challenge. It was pretty spectacular. My only complaint was give me a bigger portion and some more of that carrot caramel sauce. Also had the gumbo which was also delicious. Overall, I had a really great experience at Virtue! Our waiter was lovely and the ambiance is great. Although some of the tables are slightly too close together for my liking, but no one sat next to us for most of our meal so that was nice. My other complaint is that our appetizers came out before our drinks which I didn't love. However, the appetizers were so good I was distracted from the fact that I didn't have a drink until the drink actually showed up! For an appetizer, we had the gumbo and the biscuits with pimento cheese. Both of these options were delicious. The biscuits were buttery and the gumbo was flavorful and was served piping hot. Next, we had the short rib with the mac and cheese and the collared greens. The short rib was very good but was perhaps a tad dry. But when eaten together with the potatoes and spinach, it was perfect. Yelp Top 100 nailed this one!! What a delicious meal! We were sat at the bar since the place was justifiably packed. Our bartender/server was great throughout the night. We enjoyed both of our drinks: Apple Jack and Southern Flower. Neither was too sweet and both were good enough to get again. It was hard to decide what to eat, but we settled on the Blackened Catfish and Short Rib with a side of Mac & Cheese. I honestly can't pick which main dish was the better of the two because both were just perfect and satisfying. I went on Easter Sunday with friends. From coming in to leaving, every staff member was amazing, welcoming and a special shoutout to our server Lenny. Lenny was so knowledgeable about the menu and was able to answer any questions I had as a first time guest. The flavors reminded me of a home cooked meal in my great grandmother's kitchen in northern Louisiana, or my great aunt in South Carolina. I come from a family with deep southern roots, so I appreciated the flavors rooted in Black Americana culture. It was like I was experiencing food and history. We were so excited to eat at this acclaimed restaurant during our visit to Chicago, and Virtue did not disappoint! We started with the biscuits with pimento cheese - buttery and flaky, and the pimento cheese was whipped and had a very subtle kick. The fried green tomatoes with gulf shrimp and remoulade - so light and fresh despite being fried, which balanced well with the creamy remoulade. The fish & grits - NO NOTES. The crab étouffée was max crabby, and the blackened seasoning on the fish did not overwhelm the other flavors of the dish. The short rib was very well done - super tender fall-apart meat and paired with smooth mashed potatoes. Technically cooked well, but otherwise nothing about was super unique. We ended our meal with the banana pudding - a great classic that had tons of banana flavor and it was a huge portion. Definitely save space for dessert! Visited Virtue twice this month (January). A few things that stuff out to me as I've been to virtue before. They aren't serving Carolina gold rice which was a total disappointment. The brown rice substitute didn't do it for me. On my first visit I felt my blackened catfish wasn't good like normal. The second visit it tasted like it was supposed to. The gizzards are fire!! Definitely enjoyed those a lot. The seasonal sunchoke dish they had on the menu was phenomenal and now I'm completely obsessed with the root vegetable. I made a reservation to celebrate my friend's birthday and we were very much looking forward to dining here. We were all coming from out of town and had heard great things. The ambiance when we walked in was relaxed elegance. It was a beautiful open dining room with large windows and stunning artwork all around. We arrived right on time for our reservation and had to wait a little bit to get seated as the host stand was pretty busy. Once we were seated, we were greeted by our server and given suggestions from the menu. We ordered a number of dishes off the menu including the blackened catfish, the half roasted chicken, the salmon, the gem lettuce, the collard greens, the Mac and cheese and the cornbread. Everyone enjoyed the food with the standouts being the salmon, the blackened catfish, the gem lettuce and the chicken. The sides were ok with the standout side being the cornbread. Our server was great, but towards the end of the night is when things started to go sideways. My friend had ordered another drink and we were also paying for the check when her drink arrived, as we were feeling rushed to vacate the table given the time limit imposed. We paid the check and my friend went to ask the host if she could finish her drink at the bar. The host gave her a bit of attitude but when my friend explained she just would stand by the bar and not sit down, that seemed ok. My friend quickly finished her drink as she felt quite uncomfortable given the exchange with the host. The fact that we felt extremely rushed towards the end of our meal and the exchange with the host left a bad taste in our mouths. My friend and I had a great experience at Virtue. It was both our first time here and our server John walked us through the menu and made some great recommendations. My friend ordered the short rib with a double portion of spinach and no potatoes. Although the short rib was good, it was charred too much for her liking and the manager was very nice about getting her another one. I enjoyed the biscuits, half chicken with sweet potatoes and Brussels sprouts with a side of mac and cheese. The dining room was very nice. I especially liked that the dinner plates were not your typical plates but were ornate. Overall 10/10 will definitely be back again and will be checking out the chef's other restaurants. read more
