Roostar is a great spot to get a quick nutritious meal in Second Ward. I normally get the chicken bowl or a banh mi. My absolute FAVORITE thing is the pork banh mi with spiral fries but I've been trying to cut cals, so chicken bowl it is. I also like the beef ribeye for bowls and banh mi. I love how many options they have here, you can't really go wrong with anything in my experience. I like to come for lunch, for some reason the food hits different in the daytime compared to the evening. My favorite sauces are the jalapeno cilantro ranch and the sweet chili. The jalapeno cilantro ranch is savory and sweet chili is very sweet for sure, it's almost like a sweet and sour sauce. The jalapeno cilantro almost tastes like green sauce from a Mexican restaurant. I think the jalapeno cilantro ranch is my favorite but it really depends on your preference. Expect to pay around 12-17 dollars per order, I know that seems a little pricey for lunch but the quality of ingredients makes it worthwhile. Roostar has indoor and outdoor seating, and they also have a to go window where you can ring the doorbell and skip the wait from outside. I love that feature for when I need to grab a quick bite between meetings. Roostar also serves alcohol for those interested but I haven't spent a ton of time sitting inside. Just moved to Eado and decided to try to place out for lunch Togo during my move in process. First day I tried the chicken curry bowl, which was very tasty. Was actually surprised just how well everything worked together. The iced coffee (viet coffee) was exactly what I needed as well. Strong, bold, and great. The chopped beef bowl was good, though felt like it could use more of a sauce to it, but despite this would likely still get it again. Both entrees pair well with the salad/eggroll that it comes with. Super quick service and ambiance is pretty much akin to what you'd expect in Eado. This place used to be fantastic with great service and portions. I used to come here every other week for bahn mi and vermicelli and everyone was super friendly. This morning, I just wanted a quick Vietnamese coffee on my way into the office and I came in and wasn't even greeted. The young girl at the register looked at me annoyed, waited for me to say anything, I finally spoke to her and asked for the coffee. No words were exchanged other than "ok" She rang me out, and 5 mins later handed me my coffee so annoyed. Is this a GenZ thing, because damn. My friend and I had lunch here on a Saturday around 12 pm. I haven't visited the Richmond location about 6-7 years ago so I was curious to try it again. There is an easy and spacious parking lot. I love the cool wall design with the various animals and the dancing lion. The employees were very nice and patient with us browsing the menu. I got The Special banh mi with a side of two eggrolls. My friend ordered a Thai tea and chose the bowl option which comes with a protein choice, base of rice, friend rice , salad or noodles with a sauce option. As sad as this sounds I'm so glad I finally got to try Roostar! I ordered the special Banh mi which is equivalent to the combo Banh mi anywhere else. It's always my go-to and how I judge Banh mi places. It was really good and the amount of pate was very generous! Good size banh mi and good amount of meat. The crispy tofu banh mi was tasty! I had a DoorDash credit to use and opted to pick up a sandwich on the way home from work. They add a subtle garlic hint to the tofu which really elevates the sandwich. The bread was crispy on the outside without being overly dry and the portion of vegetables - jalapeños, cucumber, pickled carrot and cilantro - was well balanced with the amount of tofu. I'm a big hoisin fan and added this to my sandwich as a final compliment. Yum. Takeout orders are packaged with care in a disposable clamshell box to prevent any crushing which was also nice. While I just had the banh mi, I'm eager to try some of the other items on their menu. The customizable box sounds great with your choice of protein, base (rice, noodles, salad) and sauce of your choice. A modern vermicelli of sorts. I will say that the vegetarian options are somewhat limited overall and strangely, the tofu options cost more than several of the meat options. Hmmm... If you're going to cut back on the chopped ribeyes portions then might as well take off the menu. I understand cost gone up but For 12.49 plus tax it's just not worth it compare to before. Also the fries, the chopped ribeye sandwich and the jalepenos cilantro sauce were a bit salty. As for the chopped ribeye sandwich, if you kept the same portion I probably wouldn't have thought much of the price increase. We were heading to a gathering down the road and needed a quick bite to eat, so my wife and I swung by here to check it out. We hadn't had any Vietnamese food in a while and this place came highly recommended by several people we knew. There's ample parking and seating. I think they're going for a trendy vibe, but that just means that the chairs and tables are metal and less comfortable than you'd expect at a more traditional establishment. You order at a counter and swing by to pick up your meal when your buzzer goes off. We split a banh mi and a garlic parmesan fries. The expo at the counter didn't seem to understand the concept of a "split" and I had to explain it multiple times to get a second plate. Of course, their plates are these metal trays with a sheet of wax paper on them. The food was solid-- about the same quality you'd expect from the locations in Midtown. I was a bit disappointed that the garlic parmesan was just a powder poured over the fries and not a sauce or a mix of actual garlic and parmesan. I've had better food in Midtown and off Bellaire, so I can't give this more than three stars, but if you're not willing to make the drive to either other location, this works just fine. read more

Walked in here on a Sunday morning and there was no wait. I placed my order with the staff and I was given a buzzer to let me know when my order was ready. It took about 5 minutes or less to get my order. Before I could even taste it, everything looked delicious. I was super happy they have a combo option because that way I could try their other food items. I don't mind having half a sandwich because the fries were enough with it. The banh mi was amazing! From the bread to the ingredients, I was extremely impressed. The meat and fresh vegetables were a good ratio. The garlic aioli mayo/butter was tasty. The bread, oh my goodness the bread! The bread was the highlight of the banh mi. The inside was soft while the outside was warm and toasted perfectly. I can rarely find a place that serves you fresh bread like they do here. I came here for a quite lunch while visiting Houston, and ordered a couple of items: Banh Mi (the Special) - I quite enjoyed this banh mi, it was just a quality banh mi at a reasonable price. Coconut Creamed Corn - I kept seeing this pop up in other yelp reviews and pictures so I was excited to try this out. I was very disappointed in this side dish, the corn was a little under-cooked so it was chewy, and the coconut flakes just did not do it for me. I equate coconut flakes to low quality desserts or almond joys, which I am not a fan of. I couldn't finish the serving and my friend didn't like it either so I had to let it go to waste. read more

How did I forget to review this place? Been coming here now for a couple of years. It's very good. I've been to Vietnam twice and the sandwiches are very close to what you'd get there. The beef soup is a favorite of mine, especially when I feel sick. It's ground beef with a black pepper and nostalgic A,B,C type letter soup that reminds me of childhood. But this isn't your childhood soup! It's divine! Also really like the cabbage slaw salad. The blondie and cinnamon blondie are good as well. And they have a super affordable chopped ribeye box that comes with an egg roll, side salad and friend rice that I add a cilantro crème sauce to that is one of the best sauces I've ever had. The ribeye is always cooked and seasoned perfectly, it's a great deal for the price. They also have a pretty good curry. Lots of things to try on the menu. It looks and is priced like fast food but tastes like fine restaurant dining without the cost. Definitely check this place out. It's good and quick for to-go pick up or dining in. Interior is a very clean fast casual feel similar to hot chicken restaurants. The menu is a bit interesting, I expected more authentic Vietnamese but it's pretty fusion/ American style. It had sandwiches and meat/rice combo's. We ordered two different banh mi sandwiches and a side of fries. Each sandwich tasted as expected if not slightly below expectation; the banh mi in Bellaire still vastly surpass in terms of flavor. For $8 a sandwich, I honestly expected a bit more. The missing authentic pate was also a bit of a bummer; the Chinatown banh mi usually have a nice slather of the caloric rich goodness. Service is at a minimum like a McDonald's or other fast food spot, you pretty much order, get your food, then put your tray back. Solid 3.5; we weren't impressed but as the only Vietnamese option in the area, they can probably do well. read more

Viet fusion concept. The Good: Fast food made with good ingredients. modern design. a good bit of variance in the menu. The Bad: Price is a bit more than a traditional Vietnamese restaurant. French fried potatoes not good. Items need more flavor. Stopped in for an early dinner with the family. I wanted to try several items from the menu to give the restaurant a good assessment. There are several option on the menu, sandwiches, soups, plates and loaded fries. And they have several vegan options. Banh M:. Had the ribeye and the pork. They where both fine, nothing special. a bit dry, could have used more mayo/butter. It was honestly what you would expect when ordering a banh mi. On the down side they were $8 and 10$ each. So from a cost perspective they are a bit expensive. Many of the reviews say they are the best in town... I say they are fine. Ribeye and Rice Box: 3 out of 5 stars, biggest issue is the veggies not being fresh. For $12 its probably a better value than the Bonh me. Kids noodles and pork: Nice small bowl for the kids. The kids menu had several options, all for around $5. Fries: Nope. Sorry. They a potato wedge that is curly. Very thick, the order I had was undercooked on the inside. It was nice and crunchy on the outside however the inside was still hard on most of them, not light and fluffy. I even asked if they where supposed to be that "undercooked" and was told no. They gave me another other and they said they fried them longer, but the inside was still very tough. Also they did not seem salted at all. they lacked much flavor. Honestly had high hopes on the unique fry concept but ended up throwing them away. Possibly just an off day. Bulgogi Beef Fries: Beef and sauce on the fries are great. However these fries were just as bad as the plan order I had. I ended up scrapping all the topping off and eating it separate. Pork Belly Fried Rice: The pork was braised and had very little flavor. it was basically just floppy bacon. The rice did not have much flavor at all, it needed sauce and or salt. It seems everything except the bulgogi sauce lacked flavor. Most everything was blandish and dry. I think the concept is great for someone looking for a fast meal. However there were so many things that were just average or bellow average I could not get excited to go back. Add in the price is a bit more than most sit-down Vietnamese restaurants. If you eat Vietnamese food often give it a try you may like it. However I could not recommend going out of the way to order here. read more

This is one of my fave bánh mì spots! The bread was perfectly toasted but still chewy, and the flavours are incredible. It all works together so well and the ingredients are very fresh.
