Apparently RK Plumbing has the service contract, from American Home Shield, which contracts with them to cover the metro Tucson area. At first, I was somewhat hesitant about this company since there are a few negative reviews out there. My own experience has been very positive. I had contacted AHS requesting service and they immediately emailed me the contact info for RK Plumbing. I called them at 8 am and they had a plumber at my door by 11:30. He assessed the natural gas water heater, it required replacement, and he contacted AHS for approval. Shortly after he had the water heater disconnected another RK employee had delivered the new replacement. AHS didn't cover the cost of installing the included temperature-pressure relief valve (which was packaged with the hot water heater) nor did it cover hooking up the water heater to the vent...go figure. This resulted in an uncovered $180 charge on top of the service call deductible of $75. As far as the heater goes, they installed a Bradford White which is a decent brand that is not available through the retail market and it is sold directly to trade professionals. The construction is excellent and the drain valve is brass rather than the plastic valves seen on other brands. FWIW, it seems that AO Smith, Rheem, and Bradford White are the US manufacturers of gas and electric water heaters and if you purchase one with a different name it is from one of these three that has been rebranded for the retail market. The heater took 25 minutes to heat the tank to 125 degrees, the recovery rate is sufficient to allow two showers to run simultaneously, and it is very quiet when heating. On a final note, it used to be common for water heaters to last 20+ years. The models that are manufactured today are more efficient but when you check the reviews there seems to be quality/longevity issues that affect ALL brands. To get the longest service life and maintain heating efficiency you still need to drain and flush them every 6 months (even with the self cleaning models) and the anode should be replaced before it reaches end of service life (typically these last about as long as what the warranty is). Also, if you have a whole house water softener this will also help to potentially extend the service life of the tank (although it DOES shorten the sacrificial anode life and I typically replace the anode every 3 or 4 years). Hot water tanks are metal with imperfect glass linings. The anode prevents corrosion through defects of the tanks lining which will result in a premature leak. Most of the time you can wait longer than a couple of years to replace the anode. However, the longer you wait, the more rusted/corroded they become which makes removal a little more difficult. If your heater lasts past the warranty period and you haven't replaced the anode then don't forget that the anode is probably no longer functional and your tank is corroding away...this is a relatively simple and cheap preventive DIY project (you can Google instructions for DIY servicing and the part runs in the $20-$30 range). As far as RK Plumbing goes I have only good things to say in respect to the service that they provided; they responded quickly, the replacement model was a well rated brand, the installation went without a hiccup, and the heater works great. BTW, one more thought. Many times I have seen negative reviews for vendors that provide service for AHS. This frequently has to do with costs not covered by the warranty. In the ten years that I've had AHS, about 50% of the time they may not cover some incidentals that are REQUIRED to complete the repair. I suspect this is done on purpose so the vendor can make the repair profitably. Don't forget, these companies are typically small business owners who live in our community and who employee locally. So personally I don't mind shelling out a few extra bucks on top of the warranty service fee and I always tip the service personnel. It is still less money and less work than if you DIY. read more

Our home has a two year warranty. This being my first home, I figured I could just go get the work done and then submit my receipt and the warranty company would just reimburse me for what they could. After the first company come out and said that I for sure needed a new water heater, I called the warranty company to get more information on our policy and they informed me that I HAD to use a company that THEY supplied (RK Plumbing). We scheduled an appointment for 5PM. I told them I could make this time, but it was a little inconvenient as I would have to take some time off of work. At about 5:40PM, I called the company asking where the repair guy was. They finally called back and said he was on the way. Meanwhile, they must have called him and chewed him out for being late. So, when he got to my home, he was not very happy. He took one look at the water heater and said "I can't work on this bro." Since the previous guy that came out had emptied the tank and took out the elements, that VOIDED my warranty even though he was licensed and bonded as well. He explained that the unit would have to be in working order. I told him "if it was in working order, then I wouldn't have called you." He didn't like that remark. I finally calmed him down and told him that I am new to this and I needed help. He started looking around some more and realized that the water heater was bigger than the gap between the A/C unit and the door frame. He said that it would be a lot of work. By this point, I was very uncomfortable with him being there, talking about how it wasn't cool that I called his boss saying that he was late. He even made racists comments like "some little chinito put this thing in bro." Overall, I would say he was very shady, loud, rude, insulting, and lazy. After being at my house for a total of about 8 minutes, he said he needed to call the insurance company so he drove down the street to go talk to them. He came back a little while later saying that the warranty denied my claim because I had voided the warranty by having another professional come out and look at it. The truth is, they didn't want to do it because they thought it would be too much work getting the unit out of the small room. He presented me with a bill for $100, for that whole 8 minutes he was there (they don't take AMEX). I didn't want to get any more upset and money wasn't an issue for me, so I just paid him and he left. What is the point of insurance and warranties? They are never really there when you need them, always trying to find an easy way out. I seriously spent about 10 minutes researching water heaters online and watching 1 YouTube video and ended up doing the whole job myself for about $300. Bottom line, don't waste your time with this company. As a business you should show some professionalism and courtesy. I used JK Plumbing because they were the contractor for our home warranty. We had only lived in our new home 2 weeks when the water heater had an electrical meltdown. I called to make the service appointment and they gave me a 4 hour window. After making the call I checked on their online reputation and was very skeptical after seeing the reviews prior to mine. Boy was my experience different. They arrived on time and tried to replace the damaged part but the internal wioring was fried. So they called the warranty company to get approval for a replacement. While they waited for the approval they had a truck on the way with the replacement. The insurance company tried to deny the claim saying we had only been covered for a few days and it was too large of a claim to be legitimate. Well while I was on my way to argue with the insurance company using my years of experience in the legal field, the plumbers from RK argued my case for me and got the approval. The new WH was already onsite so within a few hours the water was hot and I had a happy wife again. Thank you RK for fighting the insurance company and making the case expertly for the replacement. My experience with RK plumbing was great. We noticed water under the water heater on Sunday and filed repair request with AHS that day. Monday morning had a call from Carlo at RK. Unfortunately I missed the call and called him back Tuesday. He scheduled us for Wednesday between 8-12. At 8:20 Wednesday I got a call that technician would be here in 30 min. Javier arrived about 8:50, introduced himself, and immediately got to work. I won't give the whole play by play, but by noon we had a new water heater installed and ready to heat water. Our water heater was still under warranty so it was covered in full and even got a nicer, newer model without additional charge. There were fees for a few things not covered by AHS but minimal compared to what it could have been. If we need a plumber in the future, we will absolutely call these guys again. read more

My floor drain in the laundry backed up. My home warranty company sent out a tech who said he cleared it. After a load of clothes was washed, the drain backed up and took out my water heater. That company said they would not touch it as it was still on warranty and would not help at all. (they put the water heater in!) Rooter King (RK) Plumbing came and not only fixed my water heater, but cleared out the drain from the roof and completely saved the day...(actually 7 days without hot water or laundry capabilities.) Distressing to see the negative reviews. I think the attitude of the customer has a lot to do with the quality of service you get. I had been without hot water for a day before I noticed. They couldn't come for two days, but when Javier came, he got here earlier than I expected him. First he diagnosed the problem with the water heater, making sure I saw why it had to be replaced. Then on the hot afternoon in a room without air conditioning he tore apart the system and prepared the plumbing for the installation the next day. He stayed an hour late and even returned to fix something he had ovelooked. Next day he arrived early again and had the new water heater installed in no time. My experience with Rooter King was completely positive. I had a gas leak which required a completely new gas line for my entire house. After getting 5 estimates, Jose with Rooter King not only gave me the best quote, but also was able to begin the job immediately, work efficiently and cleanly and obtain an approval from the city inspectors, all within a 4-day period! THey worked all the way through the weekend so we could get our gas back on as soon as possible. Workers were very pleasant. I was so pleased with their service that I hired them for an additional job of replacing my old toilets with new, efficient ones. Everything was done quickly and affordably. Rooter King is great. Unfortunately, we've had to have them out a few times to fix issues in our 40+ year old house, but they have always been extremely professional and courteous. We ended up having to re-pipe our whole house (ugh) but Jose took an hour out of his day to explain the different options for routing pipes and the various pros and cons of each approach. Jerry and Sammy were both the crew leads for the two major projects that we did, and they were awesome. Not really understanding all the hate. Jerry came out to clear one of our drain lines, under home warranty, and he was quick, friendly, and professional. I asked him to look at our pool fill faucet while he was on site, and even though we had never mentioned it in the original service request he made time to go ahead and repair that too (cut the fill line and couple in new pipe) - this was not covered by our warranty, which I knew, but I was glad to get this repair done without having to set up another appointment. I don't even know what to say --- these guys are truly the top professionals in their field. I had a pipe break in the foundation of my home, they came promptly and gave me an estimate to re pipe my house. They started on Monday and completed the work on Thursday. This included opening several walls and jackhammering out four tiles. When they were finished, they replaced the drywall, tiles with grout and textured. Scam artist technicians, working for scam artist management. Beware!!!!!!!!!!! get everything in writing upfront. They charged my parents $1,200 for a simple clog 50ft down the line from the clean out. It took them 3 hours total, including the driving time back to the office to get their "special equipment." My home warranty company referred Rooter King to my home for a broken shower handle valve. Jacob arrived and after inspecting everything, assured me that it was common and fixable. He quickly replaced the valve and now my shower works as advertised. I highly recommend them for shower and toilet repairs.
