Had an extraction and an implant and couldn't be more pleased with the reasonable cost and treatment of everyone that I interacted with. Full Story - I had some dental work done in November. Then in December, my mom passed away. Around the same time, I started experiencing severe pain near what felt like my incisor. I went back to my original dentist, who said it was just enamel wear. But the pain got worse. Since I didn't yet have dental insurance due to starting a new job, I managed it with Advil.. WAY TOO MUCH Advil. Months passed. I experienced another major family loss. I was still taking so much Advil that I could barely eat from the nausea. Then, one day before my insurance was set to begin, I was laid off. Five months later, still in pain and out of options, I finally made an appointment with another dentist for a second opinion. That dentist said I needed a root canal. I saw the endodontist they referred me to, who agreed with the diagnosis, but they didn't offer general sedation and that's a no go for me. I found a different endodontist who did offer general sedation, and saw them. I've already left a separate review for that situation, but suffice it to say I left shaken and angry, and couldn't trust that office. After doing some research, I found Portsmouth Dental Care and scheduled a visit with them. They saw me the very next day. Let me tell you: dealing with untreated tooth pain while unemployed and grieving two losses is a nightmare. Add in generalized anxiety, and I truly felt like I was hanging on by a thread. But from the moment I walked in, Portsmouth Dental Care treated me with compassion, patience, and respect. It turned out that a root canal would not have solved the problem at all. The tooth had a large vertical crack, which Dr. Hunt clearly explained and showed me. Their recommended approach was extraction and an implant. I was scared about the cost because, again, I was unemployed. But the total price, even including the implant, was only a few thousand more than the root canal alone would have cost at the other practice. I came back twice after the procedure, both times worried that something might be wrong. They got me in quickly and didn't charge for either visit. The first time, I noticed the tooth in front of the extraction felt rough. When I looked closer, I saw a visible crack. Dr. Hunt said he'd told me about it--but then realized he'd explained it while I was still coming out of sedation. The crown had cracked during the extraction because it had been made too thin by my previous dentist. It wasn't technically their responsibility, but because it cracked during their procedure, Dr. Hunt said they'd replace it at no cost when I came back for the abutment. The second time, I was concerned about a small white bump behind the extraction site. I was spiraling, assuming the worst, but they explained calmly that it was just tissue regrowth. Bonus points: they used humor, which is my coping mechanism, and the fact that they met me in that space made me feel genuinely seen. Not only was the total cost reasonable, but I was treated like a person, not a problem. The biggest takeaway for me? Go to a practice that handles everything in one place. When you only see specialists, they tend to recommend what they do--even if it's not the best or most cost-effective solution. If you're looking for a team that's kind, honest, thorough, and incredibly skilled, I cannot recommend Portsmouth Dental Care enough.

Usually, I'd be out of there and over the horizon before the office assistant was done running my credit card. So if I can survive the place, you can too. The Long Version: I'll be the first to admit that I'm one of those dreadful patients who only goes to the dentist when it's an emergency. There's a nasty tangle of PTSD and mental health issues tied up with my dental history and that's all I'm sharing with you about it. Point is, I went more than THREE YEARS between trips to Grant Park Dentistry, the first visit being one of those crisis visits, during which various work was done and very competently, too (I think the practice has since changed owners, but I could be wrong). The second visit was prompted by the fact that I was aware that some (metaphorical) ticking time bombs that had been identified during that first visit were now flashing red and emitting ominous noises. So I put on my Big Girl Pants and hauled myself in before the counters all reached "000" and something really awful happened*. Yes, my teeth are a chronic mess. I very nervously explained the context behind my awful habits and the plaque-y, cavity-riddled mess that's the outcome of same. TO MY UTTER AMAZEMENT I wasn't shamed, eyerolled or dismissed - which was what I'd been bracing for. Instead, the dentist and his assistant presented a sympathetic bedside (er, chairside?) manner and were willing to let me brainstorm with them about possible ways to retrain myself into habits that neurotypical people acquire in childhood. What they did NOT do was send me into a shame spiral that would have had me out of there after the bare minimum of work was done, never to darken their door again until something literally crumbled. Needless to say, it was a much more pleasant experience than I had been expecting and it's not their fault that dental insurers are a bunch of unhang'd scoundrels - they were upfront about what the costs were going to be and I handed them credit cards until they told me to stop. The office staff was almost relentlessly cheerful and I heard lots of good-natured banter between them, which I took as a good sign. I've been to offices where the staff didn't get along and, oof, it made an unpleasant visit even worse. So, yay for good attitudes! They go a long way. The practice has all kinds of shiny doohickeys, including the ability to create crowns on site via a lathe-type machine which certainly beats the heck out of the "take a mold, wait two weeks and HOPE that the crown fits" approach. I also applaud the advent of digital x-rays which are so much quicker and easier to sit through. I'm sure this lards up the out-of-pocket cost considerably, but I'm okay with paying extra if it provides a quicker/more comfortable experience. Less trauma = increased likelihood that I'll return. Do I recommend this practice? Yes, absolutely. They might not be your cup of tea, dear reader, but they were mine. Good eggs, the lot of 'em. *Cue overshare: in the intervening three years, my mental health care got a serious overhaul, which is how I even managed to get my Big Girl Pants on in the first place.

The staff is so supportive and accommodating and they really know how to communicate to their patients what to expect in a way that the patient will understand. I had cracked a filling and they were able to get me in a day later. They explained to me over the phone in a patient and clear way how to take care of the tooth in the meantime. When I was able to come in, they examined my tooth and explained clearly and patiently that I would need a crown. I shared with them my fears (I have A LOT of dental trauma) they were able to explain to me how this experience would be different and better. Dr. Dar was able to calm my fears and when I said I was leaving for vacation that evening and wouldn't be back for a week - he explained clearly why it would be ok to wait to put in the temporary crown for when I returned. I came back for the temporary crown procedure and was so scared but they turned on Great British Backing show, numbed me until I could confidently say I didn't feel anything and began drilling. They moved quickly and it was clear they all cared about each other too as they chatted about weekend plans which was so comforting for me! Then they gave me 3 ibuprofen and 1 Tylenol and told me to go ahead and take it before the numbing wears off and that research shows that combo is best for pain relief which was reassuring. They said if I had any pain that kept me up at night to call them and they would get me back in but I didn't! For the following two weeks I had no pain at all! Then I returned for my permanent crown and they were very honest about how this procedure might cause a little pain because of the cold sealant they would need to use to permanently hold the crown. But they gave me something to squish with my hands and turned on Bob Ross and again moved quickly and confidently through the procedure. This part was slightly painful but nothing compared to what I've experienced in the past and was prepared for because of their clear communication. The whole procedure took about a half hour! Then they sent me home with another 3 ibuprofen and 1 Tylenol - I took it right away and had no pain the rest of the day. I experienced the slightest discomfort later that evening but nothing that kept me up at night and when I woke up the next morning the pain was gone. Here I am a day later and zero pain at all!!!! Just the slightest cold sensitivity but it's very manageable. I am so grateful for their thoughtful and encouraging staff! Heavenly and Dr Dar were amazing to work with. So patient and compassionate and created a welcoming environment! You will get quality care here.

It's hard for me to get time off work and I was excited to get a long overdue cleaning. When I arrived I was told they were short staffed and that I'd need to come back for the cleaning another time. I was moved from one room to another and passed off among different dental assistants. They took X-rays and offered orthodontia and fillings but even with my insurance (Delta Dental) the prices were way too high for me. I decided to take a deep breath & try them anyway. I am SO glad I did. It all started before I even got there - Alyssa (front desk/receptionist) was so communicative about my insurance benefits & offered options to make it possible to get the services I needed. Upon arrival I was greeted by & got X-rays from such a sweet, hilarious & very knowledgeable tech named Hallie. They constantly asked about comfort & gave options for how to be cared for. I was extra nervous to meet Dr.Knight, based on previously mentioned reviews... to my delight he was awesome. He communicated clearly, was kind, told some pretty funny/dry Dad jokes that put me at ease. He was present & answered all of my questions. On to my cleaning with Erik - who's done this for 10 yrs & it showed through their patience, communication & tenderness during the whole experience. Jokes were told, consistent checking in with what I needed & just the right amount of silence truly made me sooooo glad I listened to my gut, to give this place a chance.
