I've been meaning to write this review for a while! I've had about 14 adjustments at Roots going back just over a month and I am happy to call Dr. Tom a part of my health team. During the first visit, Dr. Tom does some scans and explains the clinic's goals and philosophy - he is not a "back cracker", rather he uses a tool to make subtle adjustments along the spine to create a smoother flow of energy up and down the spinal cord, to affect the nervous system positively. Think of a kinked-up electrical cord - the energy won't flow through as well as through one that is smoothed out. After 12 sessions, we re-scanned my back and the flow of energy is slowly improving! I'm sure just as with any other kind of treatment, everyone has different experiences, but I've got a mild scoliosis that affects me from time to time. After the first adjustment I walked out of the office feeling pretty light, with more perceived distance between my ear and my shoulder and an improved outlook on the day. Now, over the course of the treatments, the physical effects differ from time to time, but I always leave Roots feeling really really great. I see families in the office all the time, too. I originally made the decision to begin chiropractic care as a complete approach to wellness. It quickly turned into something different as I was experiencing extreme fatigue, weight gain and infertility issues. After taking medication and having more problems than I started with, I decided to approach this in a more natural way. With a combination of functional medicine and chiropractic, I was able to correct these problems in a way I never thought possible. Chiropractic has opened my eyes to the ability that my body can heal itself. Rather than taking medications, I rely on trips to the chiropractor to remove any interferences that keep my body from healing on its own. Since beginning care, I have seen a great improvement in posture. I actually find myself sitting up straight without consciously telling myself to maintain good posture. I have found it much more enjoyable to do a yoga workout as I am not struggling to hold poses like I used to. Yay flexibility! I have seen positive improvements in my energy levels. I have been coming to Roots Family Chiropractic ever since the doors opened! It all started when I had a good conversation with Dr. Tom about my lower back pain and my frequent headaches. I started chiropractic care when a friend recommended that I try it for my round ligament pain. I was in constant pain and along with severe nausea I had a hard time doing anything. I no longer wanted to go out, I hated doing my prenatal yoga, and even getting groceries was a chore! Sitting or standing didn't make a difference, I couldn't sleep and I thought if I am THIS miserable at this point of my pregnancy I don't see how on earth I am going to make it. I was desperate! Then I started looking up chiropractors in my area and I ran across Root's Family Chiropractic on Yelp and went on to the website. I really liked how Dr. Tom's focus was on pre-natal and child care. I have lots more energy (even with a newborn!) I no longer deal with panic attacks and now I walk all over the city no problem. My pregnancy journey changed from something that I had to "get through" to an experience I could enjoy. I would recommend Dr. Tom to every pregnant woman I came across. I noticed that I was feeling much better and that my over all health was improving. I was no longer constipated, I was not getting sick, and my allergies were much improved! I also only had mild discomfort with my round ligaments and Dr. Tom's soft tissue work took care of that! The nurses and hospital staff could not believe how quickly I was healing and recovering, I feel that everything I did helped; but one of the biggest things was my chiropractic care with Dr. Tom. I am a big fan of Dr. Tom Williams and Roots Family Chiropractic! First off, the space is awesome! This is a new office and has a very fresh feel to it. Both Dr. Tom and Lauren are very friendly and welcoming. Dr. Tom has a degree from Palmer College of Chiropractic which is THE school to attend for future chiropractors. The process Roots uses really works. Before chiropractic care, I had debilitating pain preventing me from exercising and doing everyday things people take for granted. I tried massage therapy, physical therapy, acupuncture, yoga, etc. Some things helped more than others, but chiropractic care gets to the root of the problem (no pun intended). I will caveat that when I reached out to Roots, I was at a point of desperation with lower back pain so bad I could barely get out of bed and walk. Roots was around the corner from my apartment and the only chiropractor that was in the vicinity to get me in first thing in the morning so I could hopefully feel better and get on with my day and back to my job. I will also caveat that that when I called she tried to explain to me how they operate, in the fact that typically the first session is a meet/greet & scans then there are follow up sessions...BUT she said given my state they could probably do something. I also never clarified in my state of desperation if they were under insurance or not. They are NOT under insurance. I was not expecting to get a 30-45 minute talking too about how how the body works and that it's all about integrated approach with what you eat, lifestyle, etc. Don't get me wrong I already buy into this and have friends that are integrated health coaches and already go to acupuncture and do things to de-stress. All I wanted was an adjustment so I could walk and stand. I was in pain just sitting there and on the verge of tears. I was then told that i would need to come in at least 3 times a week for the next two weeks (I wanted to get better so I could complete my goal of running NYC marathon). I asked if he was on insurance and told no. Um, I'm not made of money and you have just wasted 45 minutes of my day when I could be working to even try to pay for this. I was in tears at this point. He explained his methodology and I got it and to be fair this was partly on me to not have done my research...but I was DESPERATE...I could NOT walk, stand up and barely sit. I could barely sleep I was in pain. He finally did his scans, which apparently the first session, they explain their methodology and do your scans and then when you come back after he has time analyze then he does adjustments. He finally agreed to do a few adjustments. That helped a tiny bit. I'm not sure I buy into the scans. What he showed me didn't really tell me anything I didn't already know. He pointed out where the pains and stressors were in my body. Well yeah I know that I can feel it! Not really anything about the why, etc or what specifically is wrong. Granted I canceled my second appointment that would give him time to do his analysis but at this point I already felt like my time and money (paid $200 for the first appointment) was wasted and I was still in pain. I then found a chiropractor by work that could get me in that day that was on insurance. That guy was phenomenal. He was shocked when I said I went to a chiropractor that wasn't on insurance. He also immediately had me do a few stretches etc to see how my body moved reacted. Right away he told me he suspected I had a bulging disc based on where I had pain and how I reacted to certain things. He also told me while he didn't recommend I run the marathon I could probably do it. He even gave me homework stretches to do outside that I would need to do if I wanted to run and get better. I got the electric heat simulation which immediately relaxed my back and then he did his adjustments. I was actually able to walk out of his office. I only went to two more sessions and the back pain was gone. He was very upfront and honest with me and no session took more than hour. In fact my last session was like 20 minutes b/c I made such drastic improvements. I ran NYC marathon two weeks ago without any pain, and I'm currently pain free after 3 sessions covered by insurance when I was told by roots that I would need to pay out of pocket for at least 6 sessions before the marathon. To me their practice seems a little gimmicky. read more

We started chiropractic care at Roots Family Chiropractic in the summer of 2017 after our twins were experiencing frequent ear infections. Despite regular trips to the pediatrician, antibiotics and ear tube surgery, the twins were still getting an ear infection ~once per month and we were desperate for a solution. For at least the last several years, I have had issues with being able to stand or walk for more than an hour at a time due to low back pain. As a personal trainer, I am on my feet all of the time. I also thought that my issue was due to improper foot wear and not enough foot support. I spent money on expensive orthotics for my workout shoes and looked for shoes with proper foot and arch support. It didn't make a difference. I still had issues trying to go on long walks in the city, enjoying tours, and even working out. I tried all kinds of stretching techniques, and everything I could think of, to try to improve my back issue. I even eventually gave up on working out, which is what I love and do for a living!! After seeing Dr. Tom, I have improved greatly in many different ways, and not just in my lower back! I suffer from chronic seasonal allergies and asthma as well. Although I haven't stopped any of my medications, I have noticed a marked improvement in my allergy symptoms. I was super congested all the time (even with multiple allergy medications!), and I have noticed a significant decrease in that. I was actually having trouble sleeping at night because I was so congested. So much better now, and it wasn't even an original reason for starting chiropractic work! I will be interested to see where my numbers are when I see my Pulmonologist in December, too! I have a feeling they have improved! My initial lower back issue has greatly improved as well! I can stand for several hours at a time with no pain, go for long walks, and I have gotten back into working out. I have gotten back so much, I have started doing kickboxing! I noticed even the other day, I stand taller with better posture, especially since I have been able to get back into the gym. Overall, not only have I achieved the initial benefits I came in for (I can lose the orthotics that don't really do much...), I have also gained so many other health benefits. As a combined result of quality chiropractic care that has allowed to me get back in the gym, I have been able to reduce stress, increase my energy levels, sleep better at night, make better food choices (yes, really!), and feel strong and happy again!
